If you are a fireman, police officer, in the military, a survivalist, a hunter, a camper or hiker, you know the importance of having the best tactical flashlight.
The worse thing that could happen is that you or a loved one needs a flashlight and one is not available. I don’t know about you but when I was little my image of a flashlight was a big clunky plastic thing.
The beginning of this article is intended for the complete newbie to flashlights and covers what a tactical flashlight is, the anatomy of a flashlight and how to read an ANSI FL1 chart.
To properly describe what a tactical flashlight is we need to first define the word tactical. Tac-ti-cal: of, relating to, or used for a specific plan that is created to achieve a particular goal in war, politics, etc. Tactical flashlights are usually very bright since being able to see is a key part of being able to succeed in most situations. Up until recently there has not been any kind of standard in the flashlight industry, the ANSI FL1 standards even the playing field for all torch producers. Light Output: This is a Lumens rating that shows the total amount of light that comes out of the front of the flashlight. Run Time: This is the amount of time it will take for light to get to 10% of its initial output.
Impact Resistance: Measured in meters this indicates the height that you could drop a flashlight from onto concrete and it still work properly.
Water Resistance: There are three levels of water resistance that are found, those are IPX4, IPX7, and IPX8. IPX4: A flashlight with this rating has been tested to perform under the condition of splashing water. IPX7: A flashlight with this rating has been tested to perform submerged to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
IPX8: A flashlight with this rating has been tested to perform submerged deeper than 1 meter for up to 4 hours. As mentioned earlier modern tactical flashlights are designed to give someone an advantage in a combat situation. Emergencies might mean that a natural disaster has knocked out the power or that someone is trying to shoot up the place. I don’t know about you but I lose things all of the time, under the couch, under the bed, behind the desk, behind the dresser, etc… You know what I mean. For the people that do not have time right now to read all of the material on this site, here is a quick and dirty summary of the top 5 things to look for to ensure that you are getting a quality product. Budget: You get what you pay for so unless it is a keychain flashlight or penlight most decent torches will start around $25-$30. Size: If you are buying a EDC flashlight how big can you comfortably have with you all of the time. Durability: I would go with type III hard anodized aircraft grade aluminum with a LED bulb that is rated to at least IPX7 waterproofing.
Here is a small version of our massive best tactical flashlight comparison guide, the lights that are on here are some of our more popular flashlights. Handheld Flashlight: These are the flashlights that we all think about when we think of flashlights. Headlamp: Headlamps are light that you wear over your head that allow you to be hands free. Weapon Lights: This other type of flashlight is specifically designed to be mounted to a pistol or a long gun. Just like any product, dedicated weapon lights fulfill the job a better than handhelds matched with an adapter but they are also single task devices. Light Color Temperature: By what kind of light we are talking about the color of light, some manufacturers give options for slight tints in the lights that they sell. Many of the flashlights on this site are based on the CR123a battery which is a specialty battery.
If you are looking for some good batteries we like the Eneloop AA Ni-MH batteries (rechargeable) and the La Crosse BC-700 charger. A flashlight with AA batteries can not perform to the same level as a light with CR123a without being way bigger.

An example would be that if a flashlight started at 100 Lumens this is the length of time of continuous light that it would take to get down to 10 Lumens. Where Lumens tell how much light is coming out of the light in total Candela measures how bright the brightest point of the beam is. Even if you are never going to use a flashlight for self-defense a quality torch can be used for countless things. However, if you are using turbo mode you do not want to run the flashlight for more than 3 minutes. With the Neutron 2A V2 you can achieve a maximum beam distance of about 400 feet, not bad for a light that is being powered by a single AA battery. The SC5 is small and light enough to carry around for everyday use, but is also bright enough to be used outdoors for a variety of activities. The Archer 1A is powered with a single AA battery, while the Archer 2A requires two AA batteries. The bulb is protected by impact resistant glass that comes equipped with an antireflective and sapphire coating. Later in the article we will cover many different aspects of flashlights and get a little geeky for those that are flashaholics or want to learn about more specifics.
For this reason they have much higher quality standards and are built with better materials than the typical flashlight. Hey, a flashlight might even make it so you are not late for work when you are looking for your keys all over the place. You can filter the flashlights in the table by selecting the options that you want in the drop down boxes.
Then we will go into a checklist of options and considerations that you need to make in order to find the tactical flashlight that will best fit your needs. It is much easier to use the restroom in the middle of the night with a headlamp on as opposed to a handheld light, and you really wouldn’t want to use a weapon light for this. One thing that I would stay away from are none manufacturer mounting adapters or general purpose mounting adapters that claim to work with all flashlights.
Incandescent bulbs are both replaceable and give off better color but currently most manufacturers are making new flashlights with LEDs due to their lifespan and the fact that they are mostly shock proof. The lower spectrum of 2600 K to 3500 K has a “warm white” color (light yellow tint) like what would be found in an incandescent light bulb.
Flashlight producers like throwing the word Lumen around everywhere but it is not really as useful of a measure of light as Candela or Beam Distance for how the flashlight will perform.
These Lithium batteries are different and safer than Li-ion and they are way better than alkaline batteries. With the new LED you can expect the bulb to last for over 20 years, even with everyday use. Not only is it a small flashlight, it is also one of the lighter ones on the market, as it weighs less than 1 ounce without a battery.
After the 3 minutes is up switch to high mode where the light produces 216 lumens and can be run continuously for 1.5 hours. The light features three main brightness levels, but each main level can be programmed one of its two sub-levels. The good news is with the extra battery you also get a bit more power, which means brighter light and longer run times. The bezel and body of the flashlight is made from a type III hard anodized aircraft grade aluminum to help protect the light from various impacts. The Thrunite Neutron 2A V2 can use 2 AA batteries because it comes with an extension tube to fit the second battery.
Just like the LD22 the upgraded version is still compact enough to carry around for everyday use, but it has several new operational features and a brighter lumen output.
With the TN4A users will benefit from silent operation, as instead of clicky switch the TN4A uses an electronic switch that also features low voltage indication.
The SRA4O features a CREE XM-L2 LED bulb that comes with an estimated lifespan of over 50,000 hours, which means you can use this flashlight daily for years to come without having to replace the bulb.
The D40A uses Sunwayman’s newest dual side switch feature, which includes two side switch buttons one on top of the other. Most use aircraft grade aluminum, are shock proof so they can be mounted to weapons, they have some level of waterproofing, and they are small. The most common bulb used in modern tactical flashlights is the LED, there are also incandescent and xenon bulbs which have their pluses but they will be much harder to find.
Next, the high lumens make it so you can temporarily blind any would be attacker which could give you time to escape. You can select more than one attribute, for instance if you want to look at flashlights with both AAA and AA batteries but remove all others you can select both of them. Please take the time to download and print our free tactical flashlight buyer guide checklist so you can follow along. If you are looking for a penlight or a keychain flashlight you can find decent quality under $25 dollars but the majority of the other torches will require you spend a little more to get the quality you are looking for. Some manufacturers make adapters that can change one type of light into another to increase the value of their products. The Picatinny rail is the new of the two standards and typically Weaver accessories will fit on a Picatinny rail but not vice-versa.
With all of the stress and movement that happens with guns you want something that fits completely flush and has no wiggle room. Between 3500 K and 5000 K we call “neutral white” since neither yellow or blue dominate the color of the light.
The most powerful tactical flashlights have really high lumens but it is dependent on the reflector on whether the light will shine a long distance or if it will light up the area close to the light.Candela is the peak beam intensity or in other words the brightest point of light produced.
As a small flashlight you tend to carry it around with you, so the pocket clip can be a great feature, but can also get in the way or cause problems, so it being removable is even better.
The Sunwayman V11R tops are list in the Variable Output category thanks to the technology used by Sunwayman.
The two sub-levels have their own brightness levels, which makes this flashlight even better. The archer 2A features five different modes, you have the normal high, medium, and low modes, but you also have firefly and strobe mode. One of the reasons why the Quark Click QK2A-X is one of the best flashlights is how simple and easy it is to use. The extension tube makes the flashlight longer than the one that takes a single AA battery, but the extension tube doesn’t detract from the light at all, if anything it adds to it.
To adjust the brightness levels you simply need to twist the head to the desired level, you can even select the brightness level before turning the light on.
The electronic switch allows users to power the light on and off as well as switch between the six different modes offered. The lower button powers the light on and off, while the upper switch [provides access to different output modes. Please also take a look at our GIANT Flashlight Comparison Guide where you can filter flashlights down to the specifications that you want. The lights that we offer here can light up an entire dark alley and make the dark parking lot much safer.
It worked well enough inside of the house when all of the lights were out but otherwise it was useless.

Check out the best flashlights by type or take a look at our huge comparison guide with currently over 100 flashlights (and growing) or read through our reviews. Some advantages to LEDs are that they are rated for 50000 hours of life which is over 5 years of continuous use and since there is no filament it is more shock resistant. If you mix together the ability to blind someone with the added striking force that you get from a tactical flashlight you have a dominating combination, imagine the devastation caused by hitting somebody in the face with the Surefire P2X Fury Defender.
Some flashlights like the Eagletac D25C come with dedicated SOS and Beacon flashing modes for this specific purpose.

After you have filtered your results down to your requirements you can sort the table by clicking on the header of each column. The other type of mounts that are used for shotguns and rifles without a rail system simply squeeze around both the barrel and the flashlight by tightening a screw. The higher range 5000+ K is “cool white” and they have a much whiter appearance and may have a slight bluish tint. Without changing the amount of Lumens the Candela can change dramatically since they are dependent on the beam angle which is controlled greatly by the reflector. With the V11R users are able to benefit from Sunwayman’s Magnetic Control System with the infinite Variable Output switch.
These brightness levels can be memorized when they light is turned off allowing for easy recall of the last mode you used.
The first high level, referred to as H1 can reach up to 535 lumens for a period of 3 minutes, once those three minutes are up the light kicks down the lumens to 325 lumens.
The Thrunite archer 2A is powered on and off by a forward clicky tactical tail cap switch, you will hear an audible click as the light is turned on or off. The 2 buttons work together to give users access to 9 different modes, including turbo, police strobe, SOS, Moon, and Aviation Signal. Our goal is to educate you and help you sort through all of the options and in the end find the tactical flashlight that fits your needs best, have fun shopping.
These flashlights can be carried with you everyday, most can easily fit in a pocket or in a purse.
As a small warning though, if you are not a trained fighter it is always better to use the temporary blindness as added time to get away.
Lastly notice that there is a scroll bar across the bottom so you can see even more specifications on the lights.
The majority of tactical flashlight producers make use cool white LEDs since they are more efficient light producers, to produce the yellowish warm tint the LEDs are covered with yellow phosphor which means that light is blocked and therefore not as many Lumens can be produced with the same amount of power. Sometimes you do not want to mess around with special batteries if your flashlight dies, you want to be able to go down to the gas station or use normal rechargeable batteries to get your flashlight going again.
With the Archer 1A V2 users will delight in the fact that it now features two switches to make it easier to operate.
To change the amount of lumens the light projects users need to twist the rotator ring from left to right.
The light also features a turbo mode that puts out 230 lumens and a moonlight mode that only emits 0.04 lumens and can run for a period of 12 days. The QK2A-X comes with two different modes, is powered by 2 AA batteries and is turned on and off through an easy to use switch on the tail cap. However, with the Turbo mode in the 2 AA battery model the light emits 750 lumens, almost double the brightness as the single AA battery. As if this wasn’t enough with the Eagletac GX25A3 you can choose between regular mode and tactical mode, which each mode provides their own brightness levels.
How this technology works is by lowering the current output when the temperature reaches 176 degrees Fahrenheit.
Also, if you liked the content here please follow one of the links where the flashlights are on sale on Amazon. They can be used as striking devices and temporarily blind somebody that might want to hurt you.
If you want a LED flashlight with a warmer tint you are going to have to do a little searching for it.
Lastly, many doomsday preppers like the idea of being able to stockpile standard size batteries. The tail switch is the same forward clicky tactical switch that came on the previous version, but the side switch was added just to this model.
To change the brightness level you simply need to twist the head of the flashlight, which is also how you turn it on and off.
The V11R also features broad-voltage circuit, which allows it to work with a variety of batteries regardless of their voltage. When using Turbo mode the light features a timer controlled step down mode to protect the light from overheating. To make the light even better Zebralight provides users with a battery capacity indicator, so you can easily know when your battery is about to run out. The UI for the Thrunite Neutron 2A V2 is the same for both models, light is powered on and off via a side switch, various modes are accessed by the side switch as well. With Outdoor mode the tail switch is only used to turn the light on or off, you need to use the side switch to move between the various output modes.
Along with the charger the light also features two blue LED indicator lights, which function as a charging indicator and a battery power indicator.
The D40A comes with a turbo mode that puts out 980 lumens, but putting out that many lumens can lead to overheating. Our site is funded by a small commission that we receive from Amazon when you purchase something after going through one of our links, all of this is at no extra cost to you. The tail cap actually features a U shaped groove that protects against accidental activation, but also allows for easier activation. To switch modes you have to switch between on and off within 1.5 seconds and the auxiliary modes can be reached after you have accessed all brightness modes two times in a row. With the V11R you can use a single CR123A battery or you can opt for single AA battery, but to use the AA you will need to use the extender that comes with the flashlight.
To activate the feature the light requires 4 short clicks to start, the LED will then flash 1 to 4 times depending on battery power. Although the basic model only comes with LOW and MAX modes, you can customize the QK2A-X to come with a bigger mode selection.
The nice thing is switching between modes is very smooth, no sharp changes that make it hard for your eyes to adjust. If you opt for Tactical mode the side switch will be turned off, everything will then be controlled by the tail switch. This technology reduces the current output by 45% after Turbo mode has been engaged for 200 seconds. To prevent the flashlight from overheating the Sunwayman D40A will automatically switch to high mode after turbo mode has been on constantly for 3 minutes. The Thrunite is only 2 ounces, but thanks to the stainless steel bezel it can be used for defense in emergencies. With the side switch there is no clicking sound when turned on or off, but the side switch provides you with the benefit of preventing accidental activation as it doesn’t protrude from the body of the light. To help conserve battery power when battery is running low the Zebralight SC5 will automatically step down to various levels, i.e. The Thrunite Archer 2A has a memory feature that allows the light to turn on in the last mode that was used.
With the customization feature you can choose from any one of the 8 modes offered by Quark, plus you can put them in any order that you would like, so you get custom modes and custom programming. The LD22 2015 features four different brightness levels, plus gives you the option of a strobe and SOS mode.
Another great feature is the slot load battery design along with the spring loaded battery with reverse polarity protection. The lower switch is used to power the flashlight on and off, while the upper switch is the mode switch. The Thrunite Archer 1A V2 features 5 modes, firefly, low, medium, high, and strobe that can be powered by a li-ion 14500 battery or a single, ordinary AA battery.
The V11R is operated by the tail cap switch, which users have their choice of a rubber or metal switch. While the UI doesn’t feature a locking out option, you can lock out light by turning the head of the flashlight. The Quark Click QK2A-X comes with a memory feature that recalls the last mode used, so when you turn on the flashlight you will start with that mode. The Eagletac GX25A3 can be carried in a nylon holster or with a paracord lanyard that can be used with or without a pocket clip. With the memory function users can immediately access the last mode they used with the exception of the strobe mode. The metal switch is beautifully designed, while the rubber switch offers comfort, but both are easy to use.
The head of the Neutron 2A V2 also features reverse polarity protection, which means flat-top cell batteries cannot be used. The square-shaped knurling allows users to firmly and easily grip the light lessening the chance of dropping. You can also press and hold the mode switch when the flashlight is on gives you access to a SOS mode. Pressing the mode switch when the light is off is how you can determine how much battery power is left.
