These are current A1c (Glycohemoglobin) charts for many animals compiled from the latest research found in published articles. Obesity is rapidly becoming the most common veterinary condition affecting our dogs and cats. Overweight pets are at risk for serious health problems, such as Cancer, especially intrabdominal cancers, diabetes, liver disease, arthritis, skin disorders, heart disease, FLUTD ( Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease), Immune system depression, High Blood Pressure and generally have a shortened life span. Rapid weight loss can lead to rapid weight return, liver disease, and in some cases even hepatic lipidosis. I have always had the best results on elevated protein diets, which include at least 50% canned. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which has been shown to have antiobesity activity in rodents. The big key to having a healthy dog or cat is also knowing WHAT to do to prevent common dog and cat diseases in the first place. Such as knowing what to feed, what vaccines to give and avoid, and what natural treatments you can use to treat chronic illnesses such as allergies. I hate spam as much as you do - your information is 100% safe and will NOT be shared with anyone else.
Anatomical location of feline adrenal glandsCushing's syndrome in a cat, where fragile skin is easily torn during grooming. Cats do not show as much drinking and urinating as dogs do, unless they have diabetes mellitus concurrently.
Cats do not routinely show any specific changes on a regular blood panel or urinalysis, although it is common to see hypercholesterolemia, hyperglycaemia, mild leukocytosis and erythroid regeneration (nucleated RBCs). The ACTH stimulation test is used, but two blood samples need to be analysed at 30 and 60 minutes, instead of the 1 sample at 2 hours for the dog. Advantages - The ACTH stimulation test is the best screening test for distinguishing spontaneous from iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism. Disadvantages - The ACTH stimulation test does not reliably differentiate adrenal-dependent from pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. Interpretation - It is essential to use absolute values for pre- and post- ACTH plasma cortisol concentrations rather than a ratio or percentage increase in post-ACTH cortisol concentration over the basal concentration. The LDDS test is used but the dexamethasone that is injected needs to be given at a higher dose. Advantages - The low-dose dexamethasone suppression test is more reliable than the ACTH stimulation test in confirming hyperadrenocorticism, since the results are diagnostic in all adrenal-dependent cases and in 90 to 95 per cent of dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. Disadvantages - The low-dose dexamethasone suppression test is not as accurate as the ACTH stimulation test for the detection of iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism. Interpretation - Interpretation of the results of a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test must be based on the laboratory's normal range for the dose and preparation of dexamethasone administered. The HDDS test to differentiate PD from AT has not been refined to the point that is of diagnostic value. In general, results of these tests can be variable, and must be interpreted in conjunction with the history and clinical findings.
If the above tests suggest Cushing's then radiology can be helpful since up to 30% of feline adrenal tumours are mineralised. Surgery is needed to remove one of the adrenal glands if the gland has a tumour, and both glands if the problem is PD. Unfortunately, cats with Cushing's can be poor aesthetic risks due to diabetes mellitus and fragile skin. Every day researchers use thousands of beagles to test cigarettes, household cleaners, chemicals,  pharmaceuticals and sometimes cosmetics. But next year, if you are interested in getting the bill passed in your state, BFP might be willing to work with you to make that happen. The bill would end testing on animals and also phase out the sale of cosmetics that are tested on animals in foreign countries.
Moran points to LUSH cosmetics as an example of a successful company that markets beauty products that are not tested on animals. The International Association Against Painful Experiments on Animals fund humane medical alternatives research into heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other illnesses without cruel animal experiments. Whatever the cause of the numerous cases of Cancer in human and our beloved Pets, I hope someday a cause can be pinpointed and a cure found.

It’s not uncommon for dogs to have some form of separation anxiety or general anxiety while home alone. In steps DogTV, with nearly 800 three to five minute segments that are meant to keep dogs attention and surround them with familiar objects and places. Content on DogTV is always changing, so dogs will never be bored watching the same images over and over. Estimates vary, but one survey found 53 percent of adult dogs and 55 percent of cats to be classified as overweight or obese.
A recent study at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine demonstrated that dogs receiving DHEA while being on a weight reduction program lost weight faster and had lower cholesterol levels than those dogs who were on a weight reduction program alone. Has gained popularity for weight loss, it is also a rich source of antioxidants, and safe to give daily. These are the healthy bacteria which colonize your intestinal tract, and researchers are finding they are increasingly important for health, and that they may help with weight loss in people and pets. One reason is because they tend to be more resistant to higher levels of cortisol, especially if given as a medication for other diseases such as skin allergies. Most cats are presented in a more advanced state of Cushing's disease because the early symptom of drinking and urinating are not observed. In spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism, the ACTH stimulation test reliably identifies more than 50 per cent of dogs with adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism and about 85 per cent of dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism.
A diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism should not by excluded on the basis of a normal ACTH response if the clinical signs are compatible with the disease.
This test, when used in conjunction with the ACTH stimulation test, is one of the best ways to diagnose Cushing's in the cat. The test is also affected by more variables than the ACTH stimulation test, takes 8 hours to complete and does not provide pre-treatment information that may used in monitoring the effects of mitotane therapy.
If the dose of dexamethasone fails to adequately suppress circulating cortisol concentrations in a dog with compatible clinical signs, a diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism is confirmed.
In light of the fact that Cushing's is uncommon in cats, these tests need careful interpretation. If both glands are removed the cat has to be on supplemental cortisone and mineralocorticoids for the rest of its life.
When this occurs we sometimes will use medical therapy to help control the problem and make our patient a better anaesthetic risk. After years of experimentation, years in a cage without a kind word or touch, without love or affection, without decent food or a bed, these animals are killed. Be sure to watch your pet’s behavior carefully and report anything unusual to your Vet to can help you and your pet enjoy the twilight years together with ease. In fact, watching DogTV could be very beneficial for dogs since they need certain periods of stimulation and relaxation throughout the day.  DogTV aims to follow these natural patterns by showing different programs during the day to match dogs’ natural mood fluctuation.
According to a recent ABC7 report ,DogTV is specifically designed to enhance dogs’ visual experience.
They might also have hepatomegaly, weight gain, pot-bellied appearance, and muscle wasting.

It is a simple and quick test to perform and documents excessive production of glucocorticoids by the adrenal cortex in cases of hyperadrenocorticism. Occasionally, an animal under chronic stress may develop some degree of adrenal hyperplasia, which produces an abnormal ACTH response. The low-dose dexamethasone suppression test does not reliably differentiate pituitary-dependent from adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. While basal and 8-hour post-dexamethasone samples are most important for interpretation of the test, one or more samples taken at intermediate times (for example, 2, 4, or 6 hours) during the test period may also prove helpful.
Ultrasonic evidence of an enlarged adrenal gland (especially if unilateral) or changes in internal adrenal architecture is strong evidence of an adrenal tumour (AT). No fall occurs in patients with ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome, even with high doses of dexamethasone.
Some cats with concurrent diabetes mellitus will no longer have the disease when their adrenal tumour is removed. Response to care and affection.  Does you pet still respond and interact with you in the usual ways?  3. Owners must go to work and often feel guilty about leaving their animals to fend for themselves.
Relaxation programming is accompanied by soft music, video of dogs sleeping, and soothing images of nature such as the ocean or a quiet forest. Simply join their mailing list to find out when DogTV is coming to a cable channel near you. Carnitine is being included in some weight reduction programs because of its effect on the utilization of fat by the body.
It has been shown to be safe, with no adverse effects demonstrated in animal studies according to Nutramax, a company which produces Coenzyme Q10 in an oral form for dogs, cats, and horses.
Increasing numbers of athletes are using colostrum; it is a safe nutrient to consider adding to your overweight pet’s diet. Of the 26 reported cases of feline Cushing's syndrome and one previously unreported case, 21 (78%) have been females. Often the elevated alkaline phosphatase is due to liver changes from unregulated diabetes mellitus. The information gained is also useful in providing baseline information for monitoring mitotane therapy, although different criteria are used to interpret cortisol results during treatment. This may be seen for example with diabetes mellitus or pyometra and a normal cortisol response to ACTH stimulation will be obtained after treatment of the underlying disease in these cases. This contrasts with the responses seen in patients with pituitary-dependent disease in whom inadequate suppression after low-dose administration of dexamethasone, and at least 50% suppression after administration of a high dose of dexamethasone (2mg 6-hourly) are characteristic. This female sex predilection resembles the human syndrome and contrasts with canine hyperadrenocorticism, where no sex predilection occurs. The urine cortisol: creatine ratio test is helpful in cats, especially since it is a relatively stress free test compared to blood sampling. Terminal illness or critical injury.  Has illness or injury prohibited your pet from enjoying life?  Is your loved one facing certain death? To stimulate dogs, certain segments play faster music and show dogs playing with toys and roughhousing with other dogs. It can affect the ability to control the blood sugar level in cats with diabetes mellitus concurrently.
Cushing's may be caused by a pituitary tumour (90% are adenomas), pituitary hyperplasia, adrenal tumours, adrenal hyperplasia, by non-endocrine tumours (usually lung) or may be iatrogenic (external corticosteroid use).
It the test is elevated it might be Cushing's, but there are also other situations that cause this elevation.
If owners watch exposure segments they may get a feel for what their dog sees and experiences while riding in the car or playing in the park.
For dogs it seems they will relate to the experience they see on the screen and associate it with their everyday experiences.
