More than 2,700 babies have been born in Brazil with microcephaly this year, up from fewer than 150 in 2014. The virus is mainly spread by mosquitoes, but cases of sexual transmission have also occurred.
Health Ministry official Agueda Cabello said Wednesday that the two cases of birth defects linked to Zika were confirmed in a laboratory this week.
The Ministry of Health is reporting that it has received almost 5,000 notifications from doctors treating patients with suspected cases of the Zika virus. He said the number of confirmed cases is 55; comprising 39 females and 15 males, with ages ranging from eight months to 79 years old.
