                     *  With the advent of Web 2.0, cheap connectivity is a must
                        *  The only reason I use these is because I can always be online at LMU
                        *  Typical for most college students
                           *  80% of all American college students own laptops - http://chronicle.com/wiredcampus/article/2437/student-computer-labs-still-in-demand

                        *  Generally not _as_ addicted to Facebook, etc.
                           *  Except for in the UK

                     *  Slide 5 - European Potentials
                        *  Many would initially say that Europe is "more connected"
                           *  True
                              *  Europe is denser. Hit more people per single WiFi router
                              *  20 Fon hotspots within 2 km from here
                           *  Caveats
                              *  Just getting connected is expensive
                              *  In hotels, complimentary WiFi is unheard of
                              *  In American hotels, there is such a thing as complimentary WiFi
                              *  In hostels, WiFi is usually free

    * Slide 6 - 3G
          o Speed is amazing.
          o First exposure (because the US can't get its act together) with Swanson's laptop, surfing from a hotel room in Berlin a month ago
          o BUT it's costly, in the UK
                + 50 pounds to sign up, 170 pounds if no contract
                + 25 pounds/month
                + Limited to 3gigs per month
                + Good for surfing, not for media intense applications
                + Then again, I wouldn't know, since I can't quite afford one

    * Slide 7 - Americans: Any time is work time
          o American view any time as potential work time
          o iPhones, Blackberries
          o An American would not be caught dead alone in a Starbucks without a laptop
          o But this conference is not about Americans, but rather Europeans

    * Slide 8 - Europeans: Why work in Starbucks? Coffee shops are to drink coffee, not to surf the Web
          o Many Europeans ask the question: "Why on Earth would you want to work while at Starbucks?"
                + What's the carry-over to Web 2.0?
                + _most_ Web 2.0 depends on constant integration
                + But does Web 2.0 fall into work or play? And how many Europeans consider the 'net play?
                         # If Starbucks woke up tomorrow and started offering free WiFi, would the world change?
          o While everyone in the audience is gung-ho for Web 2.0, the question is: Are students?
                + Students will be the key to the success of Web 2.0, as it has been with Facebook
                + The experience needs to be seamless and transparent
                         # Students could care less what "version" of the web they are using
                + It sounds evil, but hook 'em while they're young
                         # If students develop daily habit (like me) of Internet usage, the will be much more likely to try other online applications

    * Slide 9 - Future of Web 2.0 in Europe
    * Cafe Podcast in Bonn, Germany is taking that risk
                + Podcast boutique that syndicates anything performed on its stage through RSS
                + Daniel Becker, the program coordinator, was and is still very scared about offering free WiFi to all customers.
          o Drug deals will always happen in parks
          o For Americans, Facebook just became more popular than porn.
                + "Facebook: More Popular than Porn" - Bill Tancer, Time
                      # http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1678586,00.html
    * Is this even a problem that needs to be solved?
          o The real benefits of Web 2.0 have yet to be seen, if they will ever be seen?
          o Does Europe even need to play catch up?
          o The 2 biggest barriers
                + Price
                + Mentality and the purpose of free WiFi
          o Web 2.0 will always be bottom-up built networks and applications
                + without cheap connectivity, Web 2.0 will fail/need to adapt
                + students and young folk will always lead the way
                      # who has more free time?
          o Europe is setting itself for a Web 2.0 explosion
                + Drop in price of 3G
                + Conversion to free WiFi

    * Slide 10 - Thanks!
          o Nicole Simon, organizer of web2open
          o "Talk to me afterwards, I'd be happy to shamelessly plug some of my projects that I'm working on afterwards."
          o Slides and notes will be on hackcollege.com

    * Slide 11 - Questions?
