Abortion in the first eight weeks is the safest, and problems with any first trimester abortions are rare. Abortion is a medical procedure with physical and psychological health risks so you need to be fully informed before you can make the choice that is right for you. It does not require anesthesia or surgery, but the abortion medications can only be used in early pregnancy. Various methods are employed, according to the number of weeks of pregnancy and gestational age of the fetus. The abortion pill, mifepristone, causes a miscarriage by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for pregnancy to continue. During the abortion surgery the cervix is stretched open with a metal rod to allow the abortion instruments to pass into the uterus. The cervix is stretched open with a metal rod or laminaria, thin sticks made from plants and inserted hours before the abortion procedure is performed. This abortion procedure requires additional stretching of the cervix by laminaria a couple of days before the abortion procedure because by this time in pregnancy the fetus is too large to be broken up by suction or pass through tubing. Abortion also carries with it risks to future pregnancies as well as emotional and spiritual consequences. Emergency contraception must be used correctly and administered no later than 72 hours after engaging in any form of unsafe sexual practice. However, in this case, it is important to know that if you had a medical abortion and it did not work, the drugs taken during the first attempt could possibly have harmed the fetus. Infections are known to lead to more serious problems, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, if they are not treated quickly and effectively. Some of this information is personal but is needed to make the procedure as SAFE as possible for you. If the pregnancy is 12 weeks and under, the nurse will discuss the TOP with you and explain what will happen on the day of the procedure. It is IMPORTANT to adhere to this date as TOPs are only performed on certain days at the clinic. You will be given medication for the pain but, you may still experience some cramps as the womb contracts (gets smaller). In fact, the risks are less than those experienced by healthy women during a full term delivery. Please make an appointment with Mosaic for counselling whenever you feel the need to talk about your experience. However, if you experience any discomfort or you need additional counselling, you may phone the clinic for an appointment. The cervical muscle is stretched with dilators (metal rods) until the opening is wide enough to allow the abortion instruments to pass into the uterus.
