With the knowledge and preparation that a liberal arts education provides, students become better citizens and communities more successful. In a little more than one month, classes for the 2016-17 school year will begin on college campuses around the country, including here in our home state on the campuses of the University of Hawaii and its community colleges. That pending beginning of another academic year provides an opportunity to consider the importance of liberal arts education in a society where its benefits are sorely needed.
Specifically, a liberal arts education prepares students to become responsible citizens in our democratic society. To become responsible citizens, students must have command of a wide range of knowledge to understand the complexities of an ever-changing world. By stretching their minds, students become better informed and valued citizens, who are more able to find creative solutions to old problems. Critical thinking will also help citizens make wise decisions not only by answering important questions but also by asking crucial questions.
Finally, a liberal arts degree prepares students to become lifelong learners, individuals who are continually curious, asking questions and seeking answers. Citizens who are life long learners will use their knowledge, skills and energy in guiding the community to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of the future.

Whether you’re pursuing a medical or other pre-health career such as pharmacy, dentistry, or optometry, we’ve got you covered on admissions and prep for the MCAT, PCAT, DAT, and OAT. So now that you’ve chosen to pursue your idea of the “good life” as a physician, it’s useful to know when you can reap the benefits. One of the greatest concerns for students considering a career in medicine is how much additional education is needed—along with the associated time, effort, and medical school debt.
The structure of an allopathic or osteopathic program, while very similar among medical schools, are quite different from their undergraduate counterparts. The pre-clinical block focuses heavily on science and clinical skills, and while most are done through didactic lectures, some schools employ problem-based learning (PBL) or organize courses based on organ systems rather than subject. At the end of the second (M2) year, med students take the USMLE Step 1, which may arguably be the most important examination of your medical education (yes, even more than the MCAT!).
In your third (M3) and fourth (M4) year, you will be on clinical rotations, meaning you will spend several weeks at a time in a hospital or other clinic setting, observing and learning from the physicians there.
You will still be responsible for studying, however, and passing the USMLE Step 2 before moving on to residency. You’ve accomplished a lot at this point, once your medical school requirements are over, but the journey toward becoming a doctor is not yet done.
After your first year of residency (PGY1 = post graduate year 1), you are faced with another examination: the USMLE Step 3. We commend you for doing your research to map out the years ahead and figure out how long it will take you to become a doctor. The age most people finish medical school really depends – medical school is 4 years and residency is anywhere from 3 to 5 years.
There are 3 USMLE exams to test your progress at different levels of your medical education.

Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings from doctors and medical professionals and transcribe them into written reports, correspondence, and other materials. Medical transcriptionists are not required to have postsecondary education, but most employers prefer to hire those who do. Medical transcriptionists must be familiar with medical terminology in order to comprehend and accurately transcribe recordings.

Voluntary credentials for medical transcriptionists include the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) and Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) designations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow slower than averages from 2010 to 2020, at a rate of 6%.
Medical transcription is becoming a popular career choice because of the flexibility it offers. If you would like to become a vital member of a healthcare team and are interested in healthcare documentation, consider becoming a medical transcriptionist.

The Uniform CPA Examination is a professional licensing examination, which ensures that applicants possess the minimum accounting and technical knowledge needed to become a Certified Public Accountant.
The CPA exam is one of the “Three E’s” that constitute CPA licensing requirements (Education, Examination, and Experience). Typically, you are required to complete 150 semester hours of college coursework in order to sit for the exam, which is 30 hours more than the usual four-year bachelor’s degree. The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) develops and scores the CPA exam, which is administered at Prometric test centers in 54 jurisdictions. Section scores are reported on a scale ranging from 0 to 99, and a total reported score of 75 is required to pass each section.
You can take the sections in any order and you do not have to pass one section in order to apply to another.
You can register for the CPA exam online via the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy’s (NASBA) website by first creating an online account. There are a number of review courses and commercially available review materials that could help you to study for the exam. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting An accounting bachelor’s degree is the principal academic degree awarded in the accounting field.
A liberal arts education prepares students for life — not only for their own lives but also for the life of the community. It provides students with a broad base of knowledge along with honing their critical thinking and communication skills, teaching them the importance of working toward common goals and developing a love for life-long learning. This broad background opens their minds, allowing them to discover new perspectives while challenging their own dearly held beliefs.
A democratic society does not need individuals with narrow minds who cannot see beyond their unfounded opinions. Through different course experiences students learn to appreciate the importance of working toward common goals and the value of caring for the community.
While you’re thinking about getting into the best medical school possible and taking stock of your medical school requirements, you’ve probably already begun asking yourself, how long does it take to become a doctor? Four years for medical school, a minimum of three years for residency, and a few more if you want to specialize with a fellowship. Generally, medical school is divided into two major components: pre-clinical and clinical (rotation) sections. This part of the medical school requirement is similar to taking upper-level courses in undergrad, albeit at an accelerated pace.
Residency committees commonly use it to evaluate candidates, meaning it has a large impact on what type of medical specialty you can later compete in.
M3 often consists of core rotations near and at your school, giving you a solid foundation in the most common fields of medicine. Step 2 is divided into two separate exams: USMLE Step 2 CK is the multiple-choice section and USMLE Step 2 CS includes simulated patient interactions.
The good news is that this is the final exam in the USMLE series, which is designed to assess whether a medical school graduate can apply medical knowledge and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine. This stage can last anywhere from three to five years, and there is the opportunity to further specialize with a fellowship after you are finished. Setting appropriate expectations is important when you’re focused on the end goal of living the “good life” of a doctor.
USMLE Step 1 is generally taken after your basic science courses in your first two years and evaulates your knowledge of the basic sciences. When you start medical school you need to focus, have a lot of sleep (you will need to sleep to be able to pass test). He has been working for Kaplan for nearly three years, both teaching and tutoring the MCAT and SAT. They use a headset to listen to the recordings, a computer or word processor to transcribe the recordings, and a foot pedal to pause the recordings as needed. Vocational schools, community colleges, and online schools offer medical transcription training.
Students in medical transcription programs may be required to take classes in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, legal issues related to healthcare documentation, and English. The RMT credential is open to those who have graduated from medical transcriptionist programs and have less than two years of experience in acute care.
The demand for medical transcriptionists will increase as the population continues to age, but technological advances have made transcriptionists more proficient, which will limit the overall growth in the field.
Although many medical transcriptionists work in doctor’s offices, some are able to work from home.

Medical transcription is an ideal career path for “word nerds” who are interested in the healthcare field and want to have the freedom to work remotely. All accountants in the 55 jurisdictions of the US who file a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are required to be a CPA. Many schools offer a five-year combined bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting to enable students to meet the 150-hour requirement. There are essay questions, traditional multiple choice questions, and innovative simulations that replicate workplace situations and require you to apply your skills and come up with solutions. While you do not need to complete the four sections of the exam at once, most jurisdictions require you to pass all four parts within 18 months of passing the first part. The first two months of each calendar quarter are testing windows, which means that there are four testing windows each year. The NASBA releases scores to exam takers, so there may be a delay between when the AICPA releases scores to the NASBA and when you receive your score. The CPA exam is a test that individuals must take if they want to qualify to become a Certified Public Accountant. An eloquent and effective oral or written presentation based on facts and common values often serves as a catalyst for positive change in the community. Students begin to see beyond their own self interest and work towards the interest of the community. These will be leaders who will help to define the future of their community by putting the public interest above their own. Combine that with an average starting age of 24 (or 26 for DO—doctor of osteopathic—applicants), and this means the vast majority of medical students don’t become independent physicians until their early 30s. Each of these are two years long, though there can be minor differences from school to school. M4 is very similar, though you will have more freedom in choosing the field in which you would like to do rotations.
A good residency can make a big difference in the quality of a physician—as much as getting into a good medical school!
There are sacrifices to be made on this journey, during some of the best years of your life, but in the end, being able to care for patients in the specialty of your choice can go a long way to living a fulfilling and rewarding career in medicine.
The earliest you would be done, assuming you started after graduatnig college and did only a 3 year residency with no fellowship, you would be 29 before you are an attending. It all depends on you if you want to start early in your 21 yrs of age, or even in the 30’s. Through innovative technology and a personalized approach to learning, we’ll equip you with the test insights and advice you need to achieve your personal best.
As they listen to the recordings, medical transcriptionists are responsible for editing grammatical errors. Although medical transcriptionist education degree requirements vary from one employer to the next, many aspiring medical transcriptionists would likely benefit from completing a one-year certificate program or associate’s degree program in medical transcription. Students also gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced medical transcriptionists. The CMT credential is appropriate for those who have at least two years of experience in acute care using different format, dictation, and report types in various specialties.
Transcription work is increasingly being outsourced abroad, but there will continue to be a demand for well-trained domestic medical transcriptionists, because reports transcribed overseas usually require significant editing before they meet quality standards in the United States. If you are planning to become an accountant, read our CPA exam overview to discover the ins and outs of earning your CPA license.
Getting a CPA demonstrates a commitment to the profession and opens up a variety of career opportunities within the field of accounting. Each jurisdiction has specific experience, residency, and education requirements, and you should refer to your jurisdiction’s application materials to get more specific information. After you pass your exam, you must obtain one to two years of work experience under a CPA in order to qualify for your license.
Becoming a CPA is no easy feat, but passing the CPA exam can open up a world of career possibilities. Responsible citizens realize the value of uniting people around commonly shared goals, not dividing them into special interest groups. You will also have the option of going to other institutions to “audition” for their residency programs. Medical transcriptionists who work in doctor’s offices and clinics may also have administrative duties, like scheduling appointments, checking in patients, and answering phone calls. It is important for medical transcriptionists to have good listening skills, strong grammar and writing skills, normal hearing ability, and advanced typing speed and computer proficiency. If you want to join this elite group of accounting professionals, start preparing to take the CPA exam today. Self-employed medical transcriptionists may work irregular hours, such as evenings or weekends.
