Edema is swelling that is triggered by extra fluid which has become trapped in the tissues of the body. Edema may be the effect of any underlying medical problem, different drugs as well as pregnancy. Identifying the cause and treating the underlying reason for edema is the major method of its control. Any individual should see their primary care physician if any symptoms or signs of excessive swelling or edema occurs. Immediate medical attention should be sought if the individual has any symptoms or signs of edema or excessive swelling in the lungs a€“ known as pulmonary edema. Excessive swelling or edema happens when the minuscule blood vessels of the body known as capillaries, seep fluid.
There are some cases of swelling where the edema is a symptom of an underlying medical problem that is more serious.
This condition creates scarring of the liver that restricts liver functioning, causing deviations in the chemicals and the hormones that manage the fluid in the body, and increases stress inside the portal or large blood vessel that carries the blood from the spleen, intestine and pancreas to the liver.
When either one or both of the lower chambers of the heart lose the ability to pump blood effectively a€“ as happens with congestive heart failure a€“ the blood can start backing up in the ankles, legs, as well as the feet, causing edema or excessive swelling. If an individual has kidney disease, the kidneys are not able to remove enough sodium and fluid from the blood. Injury to the tiny blood vessels of the kidneys known as glomeruli that normally filters waste and excess water from the blood may trigger nephrotic syndrome. CVI or chronic venous insufficiency is a medical problem where the veins as well as the valves in the veins of the legs are damaged or weakened to the point where they cannot pump adequate blood back to the heart. This edema is quite serious and occurs when there is excess fluid in the tissues surrounding the lungs. For the physician to make a determination on what is causing the edema, the individual will need to have a physical exam with medical history.
Diuretics may not be suitable to treat edema in some individual, especially thoses with chronic venous insufficiency or in most women who are pregnant. Lymphedema : When there is excess of fluid accumulation in the lymph vessels it may cause swelling.
Finally, it can be due to side effects of any drugs of calcium channel blockers and antidepressant medicines. Apart from swelling in the ankles or legs, there may be moderate to severe pain while walking or moving the legs.
You can keep your legs in the elevated position (above the heart) for facilitating easy blood flow. In case of minor foot injury and sprain, you can use ice packs or wrap the foot with compressions.
Your doctor will first identify the underlying cause of swelling in the feet before giving treatment. Doing exercise and physiotherapy can help the person to overcome various causes of swelling. Very common problem in older people is painless swelling of the feet and ankles which might affect both legs and comprise the calves or even the thighs. Swollen ankles, feet and legs medically known as edema, takes place when fluid is retained in the gaps between the body cells. Permanent damage to nerves can be caused by severe swelling resulting in peripheral neuropathy. The most common cause of swollen ankles is traumatic injury like ankle sprain, a broken ankle, stress fractures around the ankle joint, twisted ankle, ruptured blood vessel etc.
Gout is a medical condition that is causes because of the accumulation of uric acid crystals within the fluid of ankle joints.
There can be numerous problems with blood flow can create problem in the normal blood circulation within the ankle region and lead to swelling around the ankles. Peripheral edema also related with the blood circulation within the ankle region but it is seen in both legs. For every half hour apply ice pack on the swelling for 10-15 minutes and carry on this procedure for 2 more days. Leg exercises should be done as they will stop accumulation of fluids in the legs by pumping them to the heart. Take a low salt diet which may reduce the amount of salt in body resulting in lesser fluid retention and swelling. Certain drugs can also cause swelling so get your prescription checked by the physician for calcium channel blockers. Lose excess weight as it slows circulation of body fluids and puts extra pressure on your veins. Just to touch a bit on my medical history, I've been on medication for Hypothyroidism since I was 14 years old.
But swelling due to water retention involves the enlargement of organs, skin, or other body structures. There are many more causes to water retention but I shall just stop here, it will take forever to list all of them down. I've never had water retention before so it was pretty easy for me to identify what caused it.
I did a Google search on the medications my doctor gave me for my stiff and inflamed wrist and realised I was given some kind of steroid (I've never eaten steroids in my life so far) to reduce the inflammation and that particular steroid has side effects of swelling. Very contradictory and people always have this thinking that water retention is caused by drinking too much water which is very very wrong!
If you're dehydrated, your body automatically retains the fluids in your body and disallows it to get rid of toxins.
It will be best if you could just add a few slices of lemon, lime, or orange as citrus is high in potassium and can relieve bloating!
I don't have a special pillow like the one in the picture so what I did was to stack a couple of normal pillows on top of each other and lay my legs on it, it was kinda difficult cos I had to tryyyyy not to toss and turn while I slept. Reducing the amount of salt in your diet will help you to release a little water retention, not all, but helps a little at least.
Today, it has been 3 years since I recovered from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or RMSF – a disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a species of bacteria that is spread by hard ticks. I was traveling when I got the first symptoms so I took huge loads of painkillers to stop the headache and the muscle pain . Too bad, after all of these sufferings my case never got reported to CDC because I was not treated by the US physician. I found this PDF form on CDC’s website, do you think I could fill it out myself and mail to them? Good providers instead hire highly trained specialists from their own country to ensure you receive the specialized care you deserve. My parents rushed me to the ER, where they did not know what was afflicting me for 2-4 days after being admitted. This is a disease that the body can kick during the acute phase, then it settles in and causes lyme-like symptoms. I have friends that have had good results with acupuncture and chinese herbs from lyme specialists the are Doctors of Oriental Medicine. After the antibiotics, I went on internal essential oils (you need to find a practitioner for this) and also did bee venom therapy (some people have allergic reactions).
It is very expensive to treat this disease, but you can do it completely naturally with herbs and oils for cheaper than going the western doctor route. Haven’t read all the posts, but sounds like most of you have tried conventional doctors only and are not happy for the most part.
If you think alternative if nutty, just ask yourself if you’ve been happy and made well with conventional.

I don’t really know where to begin, but I went through pain and neurological problems for over 10 years before being diagnosed with RMSF. One of the companies I worked for offered Lyme Disease vaccinations for the field crews but I didn’t receive it and was laid off soon after the vaccinations began. I’m trying to get into see either Dick Jacobs, MD or Jane Koehler, MD, professors of infectious diseases at UCSF AND ALSO Stuart Cohen, MD, professor of infectious diseases at UC Davis. I am not sure how this website works… but I will post the outcome of my efforts either to you directly or to this forum. Ohhhh Tommy… I would LOVE to visit your dr and just let her know how serious this IS!!! Even though Dr Jadins website says Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, she has linked her research scientifically to RMSF, or Chronic Rickettsial Infection. Roseola rash is a common viral disease that affects kids, particularly those between 6 months to 2 years old.
Studies show that roseola have higher risks in older infants because they have yet to develop antibodies against certain virus; whereas, while they are still in the mother’s womb, they are well protected by the mother’s immune system. After exposure of the child to someone who has roseola rash, it would take for approximately one to weeks for the symptoms to appear. The kind of fever that hits the child is usually sudden and a high one, which is often 103°F or 39.4°C. After a few days the fever had set in, rashes typically appear, but may not happen to some other patients. Although a roseola rash is not a serious condition, but the high fever that it may bring is something that one should be wary about.
The culprit of this disease is the human herpes virus 6 (HHV6), but studies show another causative agent, which is the human herpes virus 7 (HHV7). As part of proper management of the condition, an appointment with the physician is always sought especially if the rashes do not improve or disappear after a few more days and a high fever that lasts for more than a week. Roseola rash is considered to be a mild viral disease; therefore treatment is not usually indicated. Antiviral medications can also be given to children as there is no specific treatment for this disease. Fluid Intake – Increasing the fluid intake (water, juices, lime soda, electrolyte solution) will facilitate release of impurities out from the body through frequent urination.
Healthy diet – Always maintain a healthy diet to make sure that children will have a complete supply of nutrients their body needs for optimum protection from certain organisms that would bring harm to them. Sponge baths – Lukewarm sponge bath or cool washcloth can be used to lower the fever and discomfort. Although it is very rare, if in any case treatment of roseola may not be successful, there can be serious complications that go with it. The serious thing about roseola is that it is contagious, even if the affected individual has not been clearly diagnosed yet.
Therefore the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to observe proper hand washing. An effect of nephrotic syndrome is lower levels of albumin in the blood leading to accumulation of fluid that often leads to edema. This happens when there is inadequate supply of blood that is moving upwards from the legs to the heart. For some people, swelling happens in the evening indicating retention of salt and heart failure.
Some people will be comfortable while sitting but feel intense pain while walking or moving their legs.
Primary stages of edema include symptoms such as swelling in ankles and feet but later in the day that will begin increasing as the day progresses.
Extreme blood circulation in the ankle region is caused by these traumatic injuries to speed up the healing process.
Uric acid is produced by our body to digest food properly and to transports the waste material.
Patients already suffering with rheumatoid arthritis or in patients with a previous injury to the ankle joint are prone to get affected with ankle arthritis.
Infections occur to the soft tissues around the ankle joint (cellulitis) or in the joint itself (septic joint) can cause ankle swelling. Common most causes of vascular obstruction are a blood clot also recognized as a DVT that can appear in one of the legs and leads to swelling of the soft-tissues throughout the foot and ankle. Lower extremity peripheral edema can be because of aging of blood vessels leading to chronic swelling and other conditions that can place pressure on the leg veins are pregnancy, obesity, and varicose veins. Learn different Treatment options including home remedies to know how to cure swollen ankles and feet naturally. Thai people believe that the massage is effective in stimulating the functions of the internal organs that spread throughout the parts of body system that are mainly gathered around the soles of the feet.
So sorry I've not been blogging~ I was really busy preparing for my trip to Japan this Thursday. Just about 2 years back when I was 22 years old, my right knee swelled up for no reason and doctors were not able to diagnose what happened. Enough of my history, I'll continue my story as we go on as my water retention story has got something to do with medications that I took for my stiff wrist and finger. Since I was on medication for years for my thyroid, it'd definitely couldn't be the cause of it. On one hand, it is kind of cool that I had contracted a relatively rare and almost exotic disease (only ~800 reported cases per year), on the other, I had a very good chance of dying (>30%) because I was never treated for RMSF with antibiotics. The petechial rash spread out from my hands and ankles to the rest of the body sparing only the head. I went to see a doctor only after I began to feel better and only because I developed a complication – half of my face got paralyzed. One doctor (to whom I am very grateful) diagnosed me with RMSF, and I began taking Doxycyline for several days.
I am intrigued by the posts concerning long-term use of doxycyline for some individuals to manage the long-term effects of RMSF (which ARE real and frightening to us who have been afflicted with this terrible disease). I am sincerely sorry that anyone has had to go through this, and I hope no one else has to endure this. On Oct 6 I developed a mild rash on my forearms, and a bit on my knee, but it was only there for maybe an hour. I started feeling so well after my treatment that I went out in the horrible heat and humidity and did manual labor for the last few weeks, and I am 59. It seems that a medication (interferon) I was taking while surveying may have dampened the effects of RMSF for a while… until I stopped taking it in 2006.
Came down with the headache, chills, left arm and shoulder aching, neckache and blurred vision while on our anniversary trip. I have the email address to a lady in the states that actually visits Dr Jadin in South Africa for her treatments. I feel certain that if we join together and share Dr Jadin’s research all across this Rickettsia infected country, then the medical community will have to listen, and they will have to help us… or one of us needs to become a Dr here in the US and take on this issue ourselves! However, this direct protection from their mother fades away with time, and this makes them vulnerable to viral diseases such as roseola. If the child would experience a fever of 103°F and higher and may last for more than seven days already, it is recommended to have the child seen by a doctor.
Once a person is infected with such virus, the virus will be transmitted to another individual by direct contact with the infected person through respiratory secretions and saliva.
With doctor’s prescription, fever can be managed by over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
Therefore it is recommended for children to get enough rest, especially when accompanied by fever, to completely recover. Avoid using ice, cold water, or cold baths as they may cause rapid decrease in temperature and may lead to chills.

Since some patients may not manifest the rashes that are typical of roseola and show only fever, there is a big possibility that they can already infect others who may come in contact with them. Since children are fond of touching a lot of objects that come in contact with their hands, it is always the responsibility of the caregiver or the mother to wash the child’s hands regularly or disinfect toys and materials that they use. The typical high fever will run for three to seven days followed by the appearance of the pinkish red rashes. You need to consult your doctor if there is excess of swelling with headaches, abdominal pain and nausea. Sometimes, there may be injury in the ligaments which is holding the ankle when it is stretched beyond limit. Certain allergic reactions, varicose veins and using contraceptive pills may also cause swollen feet. He will suggest you to wear support stockings if your problem is due to venous insufficiency. Different names of foot and ankle swelling are Ankle swelling, Foot swelling, Leg swelling, Edema – peripheral and Peripheral edema.
People suffering with gout abnormally collect uric acid crystals within joints resulting in inflammation and swelling in the ankles and the whole leg. With correct medications these infections can be treated but intricate cases may demand surgeries to avoid the problem of ankle swelling.
Reflexology massage uses hands, fingers and a wood stick with cream and oil that can improve general health and relieve tension. This build up can lead to a rapid increase in weight over a short period of time (days to weeks). To spare you a long and scary story, in the end, everything turned out ok, and even my facial muscles recovered after a few months . RMSF spoiled my vacation and I didn’t even get a credit for being sick, it is not fair! I began to get better, gaining back some of the 20 pounds I lost in a week at the hospital. There are days when I feel very good, but it is short-lived and my overall quality of life has diminished. It went away, later that day I noticed it again, except a little on my belly – and again by the time I left the park I was at w my kids, it was gone. Roseola rash is not considered to be a serious disease, but various children react differently. By the time you get to notice a child’s high fever, the seizure may have already passed; therefore if you suspect a seizure, have the child checked by physician the right away. For example, children sharing the same cup by someone who is infected will surely facilitate transfer of the virus.
The virus can be spread through the tiny drops of fluid expelled by the infected person by sneezing, laughing, talking, or coughing.
As much as possible, extra effort should be done to prevent, if not stop, the spread of the virus. Venous insufficiency occurs when there is any problem in the valves thus leaking the blood down into the vessels of the lower legs.
Inadequate secretion of albumin can cause liver disease which can create swelling in the ankles.
If swelling is due to edema, you will be put on diuretic drugs for increasing the output of urine.
Foot and ankle swelling is linked with aging but can be caused by many other conditions comprising congestive heart failure, trauma, alcoholism, altitude sickness, pregnancy, hypertension or merely long periods of time sitting or standing without moving.
Swelling can occur throughout the body (generalized) or it may be limited to a specific part of the body (localized). The days following the trip, my appetite had all but vanished, and I was feeling a terrible pain in my upper abdomen under my breastbone. It left my body completely and a few days later I noticed a mild rash again on my forearms, which within 20 minutes disappeared. I remember getting he illness well because I was hospitalized for a month and they could not find out what was the matter and that was now 12 years ago. I asked if I need to take another round of meds and she said no.She said I have had this a long time and it will take a while to get better. I printed all of her research that I could find off of the internet, and took this info to my Dr., he was very excited to read the info. Some develop a mild case of roseola, while others experience the whole symptoms typical of roseola. Note that antibiotics are found to be ineffective in the treatment of viral diseases such as roseola.
Children who inhale the drops or touch them and touch their noses and mouth would most likely bring the virus closer to their body and even facilitate the entrance of the virus inside the system.
If the child is sick due to roseola, it is better to isolate the child so to avoid infecting other children. Not being the type of person to seek medical attention unless I absolutely HAVE to, I waited the upper abdominal pain out for 7 more hours until I could no longer stand it.
I took oregano oil before I even went to the doctor, which quelled the pain and even the fever a bit.
The distribution may vary from patient to patient because in others, the rashes may reach the legs and the face while in some other patients, these areas are being spared. Also note that children with roseola may have a low immunity; isolating them from others may also be helpful to facilitate faster healing and limiting their exposure to other opportunistic organisms that may add to the infection.
Took him back to doctor, he refused to believe it was still the RMSF yet websites like this and others, told me different.
Went to a Nurse Practitioner the next morning and they took a lot of blood samples and even had me on an EKG due to the left side focus. After seeing 5 doctors, finally found an infectious disease doctor who promptly had a picc line put in his arm and started him on antibiotics intravenously. They decided that I could postpone the antibiotics for a week since my symptoms had subsided.
One of the points Dr Jadin makes in her research is that Rickettsia will NEVER go away 100%. I am a little worried though – does this thing like…hibernate and then come back? We were going to the beach for vacation, and you can’t go out in the sun on the antibiotics.
Treatment may take many, many months up to several years before a patient begins to show signs of improvement. My bite still itches but I am using benadryl there is a very small red dot still but going away when I use the benadryl. My left side is also still a focus for aches and pains, even though I am very right-handed. I think that the NP did a great job in interviewing me and noticing the symptom descriptions. I realize that with the damage the bacteria did to my body it will be a long time if ever to fully recover. The other two factors, take awhile to go back to normal and that is what they are watching right now.
