Emergency filtration is the removal of waterborne contaminates from a surface water source. If layered with multiple mediums an emergency water filter can remove pesticides, herbicides, fuels, sediment, insects, debris and waterborne cysts that contain bacteria.
A very simply emergency water filter can be made using a plastic water bottle, that you can usually find littered everywhere. If you need to filter large quantities of water such as for a household, you can use large food grade plastic buckets. The first few ounces of water will be cloudy so discard if you have an ample supply of water otherwise run back through the filter.
Activated charcoal is typically made from coconut husks and once in charcoal form it is put through a chemical process to make the surface area larger for better absorption of micro-particles.
If you plan to use the filtering device for extended periods, the filtering mediums will have to be replaced periodically and there is not any definitive way to determine when. It is important that you layer the finer materials near the bottom to filter out micro-particles. Step 2:A Remove the cap from the water bottle and put a small hole in the middle of it with your knife.
To use it your going to want to pass some water through it until the water starts to come out clear. Our friend Gaye Levy at Backdoor Survival always has great tips for living a more self-reliant lifestyle. A cold or cough can take you down in a flash, whether it is an annoying sniffle or a wracking, chest pounding cough.  It is no fun and you are going to want to get rid of it fast. So what are you supposed to do when someone in your household comes down with what we like to call “the creeping crud”? The good news It has now been three days and his recovery has been this side of a miracle.  We both thought he would be down for a week but here we are today, and his wellness quotient is at 90%. This is so darn easy that it is almost embarrassing.  I am first going to describe what I did then add some variations. Note that if you have the luxury of time (because you thought to make your Healing Vapor Rub in advance), put the jar of coconut oil in a pan of hot water on the stove and leave it there until it melts. I did not have the luxury of time so I used my stick blender to whip up the coconut oil and essential oils and was pleased with the results. When your Healing Vapor Rub is soft, fluffy, and to your liking, transfer it to a small, clean jar and you are done. Substitute olive oil, jojoba oil, Plain Ole Salve (soon to be renamed “BDS Simple Salve”) or any other preferred carrier oil for the coconut oil.  You may also use a combination of carrier oils. For a more salve like consistency, you can also add 2 teaspoons of beeswax pastilles to the coconut oil and process the two in the same manner as DIY Healing Salve.  Add the essential oils after the beeswax has melted. Note:  This is a strong dilution of essential oils so if you plan to use it on children, I suggest doubling the amount of coconut oil to make a half-strength version. Some say that cedarwood oil has an effect similar to vapor rub when it comes to upper respiratory problems. If you are suffering from cough, cold and related congestion, you should try Cedarwood Oil to alleviate the irritation. A small amount of this oil can also help you get a good night’s sleep when suffering from cough and cold.
After reading that, I knew I was on to something.  As another one of those inexpensive oils I favor so much, this one is a keeper and I intend to identify other practical uses over time. By the way, as a side note, I am rubbing Cedarwood on my own feet and chest to see if it will help me sleep more soundly.  Supposedly, it will trigger the production of Melatonin. One of the things I like about this version of DIY Healing Vapor Rub is that it comes together very quickly.  A stove or other heat source is not required and I can make small batches to suit my needs. You’ll want to have some water purification tablets on hand to keep the water in the tank purified . Water should save for a long period of time, but will deteriorate faster based on the chemical or technique you’re using to purify it, amount of sunlight, quality of the tank etc.
If the real world situation has deteriorated to the point that you’re using a water storage tank you should be rationing the water, and using marks on the side of the tank to adequately predict the amount of water you and your family are using in a given time period. This entry was posted in Self-Sufficiency, Water Storage and tagged storing water, survival water storage, water storage, water storage tanks. You may have recently found yourself the victim of water restrictions in the past week; that feeling of absolute dread fills you as you turn your tap for a quick shower and not a drop comes out.
If you don’t already have an outside water storage container, maybe now is a good time to invest in one, or start saving water when it becomes available.

We must consider that when our taps run dry at home, when water supply is restored we may find some unsavoury bodies in the water. If you have a few extra rands, consider installing water saving devices such as high-pressure, low-water usage shower heads, water saving cisterns and geyser timers. If you are the parent to a newborn child, you would need to do sufficient planning to ensure that you can keep up with water requirements if you bottle-feed your child, bath-time water requirements etc. It can be incredibly difficult to keep a cool head in conditions like this; do some research for yourself and consider other options, too, like water coolers, water storage and alternative ways to optimise your water usage to keep yourself going. The best way to do this is to place a paper envelope on top of your scale and pour your lye into the envelope.
Next, I’m going to set a thermometer inside and let that sit until it’s down to 100 degrees.
10 minutes later, it’s becoming almost more like cream in appearance, and you can see the liquid is not settling as fast behind my stir as it was before. Now I’m not making anything spectacular here, this is just for me to use privately, so I’m just going to scrape right out of the bowl into the mould.
The advantage of cold process soap like this over hot process is that it’s still liquid-like and you can get a very smooth surface on the soap if you want.

Looks like the bunny was deleting the guilty pics and one more snapped before he could vacate the area to me.
Over the years, he has studied all facets of survivalism, and has learned works and, more importantly, what does not work. Filtration does not destroy water borne contaminates it simply removes some but not all contaminates.
Fine mediums would include coffee filters, sand, cheesecloth, activated charcoal and charcoal you make. The buckets must be elevated and have several holes in the bottom for the water to filter through and you must have the means to capture the filtered water. Ensure any bagged charcoal you use is not pre-treated with lighter fluid or contain any other types of filler. Activated charcoal is what is typically used in carbon filters that are used in refrigerators and home filtration systems.
If you notice sediment making it though that is a good indication it is time to change the materials out.
Gravel, leaves and grasses near the top will gather the larger debris, such as insects and other materials. Another good reason to keep a bandana in your bag is you can place the charcoal inside the bandanna to do this like pictured below. The next step is to place a layer of sand over the charcoal in the bottle followed by a layer of rocks. If you have a bandana you can put it over the top of your filter to strain out any debris in the water.A Remember this is only for filtering water not purifying it. Today she is sharing with us her recipe for a DIY healing vapor rub for cough and congestion. Alas, there are all types of over-the-counter remedies available to you but there are a few problems with them. It is an expectorant and efficiently eliminates coughs and removes phlegm from the respiratory tracts and lungs, thereby relieving congestion.
By stimulating the loosening of phlegm and the coughing which will remove it, you also protect your respiratory tract and overall health from toxins and conditions that excess phlegm can cause. But for my thinking, plastic is fine for day to day use.  It really is a matter of preference.
Ensuring you and your family will have drinking water after a catastrophic event is vitally important. You should always boil water stored for an extended period of time to kill any unwanted germs or bacteria that might have gotten into your tank. You should also have extra around in case of emergency or the chance that your supply line could be interrupted, and you should time your tank refills before the tank is completely empty. You can use old bath water, or dish water in the garden, and take water used to boil food and reuse it as a broth, stew, or even a drink for family pets.
Coupled with other basic needs being cut, this has been a tipping point for most South Africans and a lot of us have allowed the panic to settle in.
Whatever causes may have lead to us finding ourselves in this situation will not be alleviated by pointing fingers.

Knowing what you need will allow you to store some water in case your area is affected by water cuts. A lot of people use the stove, but I find it’s very hard to get the right temperature. You want to have a good kitchen scale and make sure it’s zeroed out before you measure your lye. This could take anywhere from 15-20 minutes to a half hour, sometimes longer depending on the situation. I use that because I happened to get it for free and it can take the 170 degree temperatures of the soap. Then let the soap sit and cure for 6-8 weeks until all of the lye has been worked out and all of the oil has been converted to soap. His calling is to show ordinary people how to become better prepared for an uncertain future. Once water has been filtered, it must then be purified to destroy any harmful bacteria, pathogens and parasites that may be present.
Because it is essentially a pod, it can survive purification methods such as boiling and chemical treatment, so it is important that they be filtered out. Ensure you have enough filtering medium to fill the bucket or any device at least three quarters of the way full.
It should state on the bag that it is 100 percent hardwood charcoal, which does not contain any filler.
It is important that you have ample filtering medium available for replacement if using for extended periods. I would still recommend boiling the water to kill any bacteria and making it safe to drink. Check it out below, and be sure to visit her site for more awesome homesteading tips, recipes and more. It also gives relief from headaches, red and watery eyes, and other symptom of coughs and colds.
Protecting that water from contaminants, thieves (four-legged or two-legged), and other surprises is equally important. Add into that factor the heatwave we are currently experiencing and dehydration becomes a very real threat.
It's delivered conveniently to your home and office, is extremely economical and perfectly hygienic.
A lot of people prefer the cold process because, although it takes longer to cure, you get a nicer looking bar of soap. I’ve been lucky enough to get actual pics during the day of deer in my yard, but would love to see what critters roam at night. He is the author of four books The Prepper's Guide to Surviving The End of The World as We Know It,  31 Days to Survival, The Dirt Cheap Survival Retreat, and The Prepared Prepper's Cookbook. The reason I crush the charcoal is because I want the water to pass through it not go around it. Some unorthodox tips may include allowing younger children to swim in the evenings instead of having each of them use water to bath or shower separately, and rather allowing that every second day. Keep a few big bottles of drinking water available at all times to avoid becoming dehydrated or finding yourself without drinking water for extended periods of time. You can see some foam starting on the edges, and you can see a lot more little particles of soap forming inside here. When you stir it, you can see the tracks left behind. It is now ready to be poured into the mold.

Regular water conservation includes not watering your garden during the day, showering instead of bathing, closing your taps while you brush your teeth. I should also note you should have ventilation where you work; this gives off some very poisonous gases.
