If you're stranded and there isn't a fresh water source around, then you need to get to work on collecting water. The moisture from the ground reacts with the heat from the sun to produce condensation on the plastic. The Lifestraw is a portable filtration device that lets you safely drink directly from any fresh water source. The filter gets rid of nearly 100 percent of waterborne bacteria, 98.7 percent of viruses and removes particles as small as 15 microns. Lifestraw is also a great item for any outdoor enthusiast to have in his or her emergency survival kit.
In an apocalyptic situation, water would not just be hard to come by, but difficult to find in useable condition. Any water your bound to find in an apocalypse, no matter where it’s from, will probably be contaminated with dirt and bacteria.
Basic Bark Filter: Carefully cut a 16 to 18 inch wide piece of bark away from the trunk of a birch or willow tree.
Remember that all the water you filter should still be boiled before use to be sure it’s as clean as possible.
Now that you have the capabilities to filter your water, your options for where to collect it open up a bit. Some examples of places to salvage filterable water would be toilet tanks, storm drains, water heaters, and car radiators. The Kelly Kettle is a simple, effective biomass-fueled container designed to boil water fast. This leads to another potential problem: What will you use for fuel to create the heat source? According to the parent company, the Kelly Kettle is a 100-year-old design that originated in Ireland. Lough Conn is famous for its free rising brown trout and fresh run Salmon from the River Moy system. It seemed to me that such a kettle would have a valuable place in my emergency preparedness supplies, as well as being really useful for backpacking. My first impression upon opening the box was that the kettle design is extremely well thought out and practical: A double-walled metal container, hollow in the middle, fits on a base that allows building a fire. There are accessories, a Pot-Support and Cook Set, that can be added to a Kelly Kettle to allow cooking over the chimney.  All the components can be stored inside  the kettle. While the Base Camp might be too big for backpacking, there is another model, called the Trekker, that holds two mugs of water. If the only water available is mineral rich, like salt water, filtering and boiling may not be enough to remove the impurities and make the water drinkable. There will be times when you don’t have the luxury of having the tools available to purify water.  In these dire and unfortunate times there still are precautions you can take to prevent illness from contaminated water. These are great tips for filtering and purifying water in a survival situation.  However, a good zombie prepper is prepared! Unlike most survival guides that give you more information than necessary, have tips that waste more time than they do actually help you survive, and contain only marginally useful information, the survival bandana contains vital information on each main area of surviving and doesn't waste time and space on useless information that you'll never find yourself needing. Odditymall features unique gifts with a focus on geeky gadgets, survival gear, outdoor gizmos, unique kitchenware, pet gadgets, novelty gifts, and amazing product designs.
Survival rules dictate that to survive in the wilderness you will need shelter, water, fire and food. Subsequently, survival experts design survival techniques and methods that center on building shelter, collecting and purifying water and making fire and then finding food.
The following tips will help you to do everything within your power to stay safe, find help, and get out alive.
Evaluate your immediate area to ensure it is safe, and as a rule, you should stay in one place if you are lost to make it easier for rescue personnel to find you. Shelter can be constructed without any tools by using natural formations such as downed trees and forest debris. Fire is important and you must have one to keep your spirits up, prevent hypothermia, to ward off insects, predators and to cook food and purify water.
Ways to start fires include friction, focusing sunlight to greater intensity by using a magnifying glass, pieces of glass, headlight fixtures, eyeglasses and even water in a clear plastic bag. If you have a magnesium stick, take the small metal scraper it comes with or a heavy bladed knife and scrape some magnesium onto any dry tinder. Build signal fires and maintain them at night so spotters can see the flame and keep them going in daylight so the smoke can be spotted. Find the highest spot near your camp and use a signal mirror, piece of glass, lens from a camera, and headlight from a car or bicycle or a bright cloth to signal potential rescue personnel. After five days, you may have to consider traveling some distance to get out of your predicament.

In this article, the various survival uses for bleach is listed and some important things preppers need to know about bleach are also noted.
If you cana€™t boil water and there are no other water purification methods available, you can opt to purify water and make it safe to drink with regular, unscented bleach. NOTE: Dona€™t use scented bleach for water purification, because this has added chemicals that are unnecessary for water purification. After cleaning your cutting board with soap and water, soak it in a bleach solution (1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 gallon of water) for five minutes before draining and allowing it to air dry. You can get rid of any viruses that can cause illness by spraying a bleach solution in the bathroom, kitchen or sick room.
Remove mold and mildew on surfaces by flooding the area with A? cup of bleach per gallon of water. Thermos bottles, ice coolers and other containers can be deodorized by soaking them in a bleach solution (1 tablespoon of bleach to a gallon) for 2 minutes.
Since bleach expires, you need to have alternative means to purify water like water purification tablets and filter systems.
I recommend the LifeStraw which is a simple water filter that can be used by anyone; just suck water through it and the filter can make dirty water drinkable. To start with, in order for these methods to work you would still need some items at hand, and we will explain all of them in detail and how to actually use them. Then place another thinner branch in the notch and start rapidly and briskly rotating the thinner branch. Another handy method for purifying water without any modern invention is to use soil or sand. Another similar method, but more time-consuming is to dig a hole in the damp ground and wait for the water to accumulate in the hole. A variant of this method is to just use a large bowl (if you have such at hand), place a metal cup at the bottom of the bowl; then pour the unclean water in the bowl.
Another handy method, used by hikers and trekkers, is to expose the water to the strong sun’s rays.
Well, you may not have such a tool at hand when in the wild, so you will have to rely purely on the sun’s magic.
A very useful trick is to get two containers – one with a higher bottom, than the other. Basically, the ripped cloth will act as a transporter of the water from one container to the other. In case the water stopped accumulating, this means that either the cloth doesn’t reach deep enough into the water, or that the cloth is too clogged up.
As container No 1 is placed slightly above the second container, the evaporating water will immediately slide into the second one. Another very primitive method for gathering water is to take a plastic bag and cover a tree branch with it.

Of course, you will have to wait quite some time to have some meaningful amount of water, but even a few sips can be life-saving. So, make sure to place another container (clean) beneath this system, in order to collect the filtered water. Of course, we need to point out that some very easy methods like using iodine tincture or potassium permanganate work also. Boiling is an option but there are other cost effective methods of filtering water like solar condensation and improvised water filters. To do this, you'll need some plastic sheeting, a digging tool, a container, a drinking tube and a rock. Add charcoal from your fire to remove odor -- just make sure you filter the charcoal out with some cloth. It weighs only 140 grams and it just might make the difference in your chances of survival.
Faucets would most likely stop running after a month or so and bottled water will no doubt be claimed right away. Roll the strip of bark into a cone shape leaving a dime sized hole at the small end and wrap the cone using a rope or strong vine. Cut a hole in the bottom of a plastic bag and tie it off leaving just a small opening for the water to drain through.
Whenever possible use a cover when boiling your water to increase temperature and kill more bacteria.
The water from these sources will most likely be dirty but able to be cleaned with a well made filter. If the vehicle is in a worm climate it will have ~10% antifreeze which you can counteract with a1:3 ratio of 80 proof liquor.

The Kelly Kettle combines an efficient design  for boiling water with the ability to be fueled with biomass. I am a huge fan of biomass-fueled emergency stoves, so I was intrigued with the Kelly Kettle concept. The tradition of using the kettle to boil water at lunchtime goes back to the 1890s on the west coast of Ireland and the design has changed little.
The lake provided (and still provides) ample fuel for use in the kettle, according to the website, where washed up twigs, sticks and dried grass were easily available. I ordered the Kelly Base Camp Aluminum Kettle, which  holds 54 ounces of water and weighs 2.1 pounds. In this case, the weather in Central Oregon was cold and damp, it had been raining for several days, and all the twigs and sticks were wet or damp. I had picked up a big handful of damp sticks off the damp forest floor, and didn’t need all of them to boil the water. Combined with the cooking rack, that  seems like it would be an ideal combination of  backpacking biomass stove and water purification system. Aptly named 'Head For Survival', the giant orange survival bandana can certainly be used in a plethora of different ways, including a head wrap to block the sun, an arm sling if you injure your arm, a splint wrap if you injure your leg, to be used to signal people from afar if you're stranded, and more. Plus the instructions use a lot of illustrations to further make it easier to understand what they're trying to tell you. Food is not as critical as shelter and water, because the average person can survive three weeks or longer without food, yet cannot survive longer than a few hours without shelter and fire in extreme cold.
The reality of most situations is that lost or stranded individuals are, in most cases, rescued before they succumb to starvation.
This list assumes that you have no injuries but are just trying to find your way to safety.
If you’re going hiking or camping, consider taking items from the following list along with you just in case. You can start a fire using car batteries and batteries from handheld electronic devices, as well.
Once you have some shavings on the tinder, take the scraper or the back of any fixed bladed knife and apply downward pressure while scraping along the flint toward the tinder. Water sources that must be filtered and purified include rivers, streams, lakes, puddles, natural springs and ponds. You may not be able to see them but they may be able to spot the reflection from the glass or mirror or they can spot the bright colored cloth.
Typically, rescue personnel will begin search operations within 72-hours; this of course does not mean you will be rescued within that period. Remain calm so that you can think things through rationally and make the best decisions that will lead to your survival.
Remember, before you set out on a hike or camping trip, plan ahead and take the appropriate gear and supplies so you won’t be caught unprepared in an unexpected situation. Remove those by soaking clean dishes in a bleach solution (2 tablespoons of bleach to 1 gallon of water) for 10 minutes.
Mix 1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 gallon of water and soak vegetable or fruit in it for 2 minutes before cooking or eating. Mix bleach half by half with water in a misting bottle then liberally spray into the air to destroy germs. Bleach can also be used to kill bed bugs (bed bugs must come in direct contact with bleach to kill them).
Expired bleach cannot be used to purify water but can be used for other things like removing mold from surfaces, getting rid of toilet bowl stains or cutting the smells of sewage. There are fluoride water filters for it that can remove arsenic from water (but they expire with use). Without it you risk catching some disease and if you’re far from civilization, it may take a lot of time until you reach a hospital.
You may have forgotten to take along some purification system or filter, so you will have to rely only on tools and methods at hand. Of course, without container you won’t be able to do that, so make sure that you carry some metal container in your backpack.
Be aware that the higher you’re situation (in elevation), the longer you will need to boil the water. This may take quite some time for it to happen, but is still a working and reliable method. It is naturally distilled and clean, so you won’t be worried about any viruses or microorganisms. This method requires some time to build the system, and then some more time to wait for the water to collect.
Not only does water evaporate from the vegetation and foliage, but also, the earth always contains some moisture and water which will gather in the form of water vapor and then fall into the container. Again, cover the bowl with some plastic sheet (other covers may work too, but not fabrics, as they absorb the water). This works since the cloth soaks until all its fibers are soaked and eventually the water reaches the edge of the water container and starts going down to the empty one, thanks to gravity.
You can clean it up, or you can use another cloth from the same piece of clothing you used initially. You will basically have distilled water as a result, leaving all impurities, salt and other elements in the first container. Follow the instructions of the package, but remember – after 30 minutes since you drop the crystals the water should turn pink. We still would advise you to either practice at home or in your backyard these methods, or carry some chemical solutions to stay on the safe side. Samuel is excited to share his knowledge and the things he learns while travelling in British Columbia, Canada where he lives and around the world. Except it consumes fuel, makes the water hot, and you can’t move while boiling the water because you have to watch the fire lest it spreads. You CAN move around while waiting for the water to boil but you would have to use common cooking areas or areas that have already been used as cooking area. It should not be used as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. You can also add vegetation inside the hole to increase the amount of moisture -- just make sure the plants aren't poisonous. It provides needed moisture to your organs and tissues, it regulates body temperature, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells.
Obviously, in these conditions, buying a Brita water filter isn’t going to be an option.
For this you’ll need a shovel, a tarp, something to the effect of a coffee can, and some rocks.
Tosh a few small rocks into the bottom of the cone and then cover them with an inch thick layer of grass.
Using the methods I’ve covered in this article, accomplishing this daily task will be bit easier.

Many an animal has died after drinking antifreeze that either dripped or spilled on the ground. On wet and stormy days, the local angling guides would keep watch for the small pillar of smoke on the lake shore which indicated that a colleague already had a “brew” on! My reasoning was that a kettle this size, if it worked as advertised, would be ideal for base and hunting camps and could supply several people with hot water quickly during emergency situations. Starting them was not a problem and once the fire got going, the water boiled after about three to five minutes. Every technique, piece of equipment or skill recommended on this website has been thoroughly tested and researched. But best of all the giant bandana has essential survival tips and instructions printed right on it, with information organized by different topics such as navigation, starting a fire, making a shelter, finding and purifying water, signaling, making knots, and more.
However, after just a few days without adequate nutrition the body will begin to lose energy, making other survival tasks difficult to perform. Always keep shelter, water, fire and food in mind when assessing uses for your supplies, tools and material. If the weather is cold, you will need a shelter to prevent hypothermia and a means to stay dry during storms.
Fires can be started by creating a spark and directing it toward a highly combustible material, such as, hand sanitizer that contains alcohol, alcohol wipes and petroleum jelly. Walking aimlessly and not making progress toward civilization is simply a waste of valuable energy, increases your chance of injury, and makes it difficult for anyone to find you if they are searching where they believe you may have entered the wilderness.
You can use regular household bleach from Clorox or Purex or other bleach brand that only have between 5 percent and 6 percent chlorine and sodium hypochlorite as active ingredient.
Sodium hypochlorite is a dangerous corrosive substance so you must be cautious when choosing to use bleach to purify water and make sure you stick to recommendations. It can filter more than 250 gallons of water which is really impressive because traditional filters can only filter 20 gallons or more! Place dry foliage (or cotton balls if you have, as they catch fire extremely well and quickly) at the notch. The reason for this is that the atmospheric pressure gets weaker and weaker as you go above sea level. Soil is known to purify and extract any viruses or organisms from the water, leaving it clean and ready for drinking.
Of course if you’re trekking or camping in a relatively dry climate, you should not rely on rain.
Take some plastic sheet or cover and try to spread it all over the hole, so it covers it completely.
This method resembles the one where you could only dig a hole and wait for the water to accumulate, but in this method you force the water to accumulate quicker and directly in your bottle or container. Place the heavy object or rock on the sheet right above the cup, and wait for the water to evaporate and then start dripping in the cup. You can simply place the second container on a flat stone or some other object, to elevate the container slightly.
Eventually, the water will end up clean, leaving all impurities, particles, organisms and microbes in the first container. Close the plastic bag’s opening with a rope or thick thread so that the water will remain in the bag. Make a small hole on the very bottom of the plastic bag so the clean water can come out through it. Otherwise, if you filter the water using the above primitive methods, you may still want to add some iodine tincture to make sure that the water is absolutely safe for drinking. This lessens the impact and you are sure that the surroundings are cleared of possible fuel.
Each Lifestraw lasts 700 liters, roughly the amount of water needed for one person per year. It’s said that an adult in an active situation can dehydrate in as quickly as an hour. Your going to have to get creative and resourceful with your filtration methods and as I go on I’m going to explain a few easy ways to do just that.
Over that pour an inch of sand, then place another inch of grass, then more sand, and so on until the cone is almost full. There are many more and different ways to make homemade filters and a little research can have you constructing a sophisticated filtration system to sustain not just you for a day, but a group for an extended period. Always keep a large amount of hard liquor in reserve if attempting this and if you feel sick take a few extra shots. A hot cup of tea or soup awaited anyone who landed and the Kettle would be repeatedly boiled as additional boats laden with anglers arrived.
Shelter can be constructed in less than an hour that will provide you sufficient protection from the elements.
Never use the backside of a folding knife blade because the blade can fold up on your fingers and always the backside to create a spark to prevent damage to the cutting edge. He often ends up hurting himself and others because he’s acting through sheer emotion rather than logic. Many hikers and campers, when dehydrated, don’t consider the importance of finding a way to purify their water.
Only when you’ve given your body some water, do you realize that the water was unclean. If you have a lighter or matches, light the foliage and blow gently at the burning branches. This means that water starts boiling at lower temperatures than 100o Celsius, which also means that you will have to keep the boiling process longer in order to achieve the same results at sea level.
As you have places the cloth, now put some soil (or sand) on the cloth, right above the container’s opening. It shouldn’t be too heavy, but it must stretch the plastic sheet so you will have a protrusion that will accumulate water droplets.
This method may be preferred if you have a reliable source of water and can have immediate access to water.
The principle behind this is that the UV rays kill bacteria and viruses and leaves the water clean.
But, the longer they are exposed to the sun, the higher the chance for them to develop some resistance against this damage and reactive anew.
All of them will reach the harder surface of the cloth and stick to it, whereas the water will keep moving along the cloth. As trees contain a lot of water and moisture, this method will create somewhat a greenhouse effect. If you don’t have a plastic bag, as funny as it may sound, using a condom will actually be quite handy, as it can stretch to quite a size and withhold. If the water is dark pink, the concentration is higher than would be considered safe, so better put some more water to dilute it.
Obviously the apocalypse would be an active situation and the most extreme caution would apply. The following are relatively simple methods of making effective water filters out of everyday materials.
Place a smaller rock in the center of the tarp above the can and push it down, indenting the surface of the tarp.
He flails all over the place, thrashes about wildly, and causes himself a lot of undue stress. There are small portable and very light gas stoves made specifically for hikers and campers who don’t want to carry too much load.
If you don’t have matches or lighter, you will have to use some old methods for starting fire. Nonetheless, be careful when placing some sharper rocks as they may puncture the condom and all your setting will have been in vain. Of course, the less humid and moist the area, and the less water sources around you, the harder it would be for you to find and purify water. Let that sit in the heat and as the sun evaporates the water it will condense onto the underside of the tarp and run down into the can.
There is no guarantee the antifreeze would be filtered out besides why would you use a poison in the first place?
This type of filter can only clean large particles from your water, and will not filter any bacteria. If you have other people with you, try to be an example to them in order to keep the whole group focused on finding solutions. They have to be made right near the openings of the containers, since the vapor will collect to the top parts of the containers.
After all you’re using chemical solutions to purify your water and it certainly kills bacteria, which means it can be damaging for humans too, even in such small amounts. Charcoal can be added to any homemade filtration system to filter bacteria and germs from contaminated water.
Try to keep your containers (bottles) clean, so you don’t have to worry about impurities.
