Bethesda recently announced the release of their revamped Fallout 4 Survival Mode, an existing difficulty setting that has now been made much, much tougher.
It’s also worth mentioning that the console is disabled while in Survival difficulty, and mods are disabled entirely in the beta it seems. It’s breathed new life into the game, and made me want to challenge it on a bigger scale by playing (mostly) melee throughout.
I do not think there is enough water in the entire Commonwealth that could quench the Sole Survivor’s constant dehydration! The added challenge of not being able to save without sleeping has been interesting, and I do appreciate it, however because of the other harsh aspects of Survival it can become really annoying having to repeat long sections of the game because you died to something almost entirely unavoidable. If you are getting a bit bored of the status quo in your Fallout 4 playthrough, I definitely think the new Survival Mode has a lot of fun elements. It does however need some adjustments to make it more fun as opposed to just being really hardcore. However, with fast travel out of the mix, getting home in time for sundown presents a whole new set of problems.
Enemies feel more menacing as well, as even the lowliest of raiders equipped with a simple pipe pistol can pose a real threat.
Bethesda takes to Twitter to announce that Fallout 4‘s upcoming Survival mode is coming to PC users via Steam for its beta test sometime next week. Bethesda announced the news late yesterday, and while the studio did not provide a specific release time for Survival mode, at least now we know that Vault Dwellers playing Fallout 4 on the PC will have a chance to report back to the rest of the gaming world within a week or so. The release of Survival mode, if it follows shortly after the testing period, will also work in conjunction with the Fallout 4 Automatron DLC that launched yesterday.
While Survival mode might just seem like an overly complex change to difficult at first glance, all of the changes combined should fundamentally change the way gamers approach Fallout 4. Bethesda’s Survival Mode for Fallout 4 is now available to anyone who owns a Steam version of the game.
Following the release of this beta, Bethesda also announced more details regarding the new difficulty level that promises to transform the Commonwealth into a more dangerous and realistic post-apocalyptic landscape.
Strategy: Intensify decisions involving when to get into combat versus when to avoid it, and also make you think more about what gear to take into combat. Exploration: Slow down the pace of the game and encourage players to explore the nooks and crannies of the world. Resource Management: Balance out items in the world that may be too easy to acquire or horde, giving players more to consider when planning their current loadout.
In Fallout: New Vegas, you could choose between several fairly standard difficulty settings. However, in what may be a first for many, you will not be able to fast travel, and on top of that, you will not be able to save the game until your character sleeps.

When Fallout 4 was first unveiled at E3 2015, one of the major selling points was that consoles will get mod support.
Fortunately, you won’t have to wait much longer, because the Fallout 4 Creation Kit is expected to release sometime between the first and second DLC packs (for PCs). The next update for Fallout 4, which revamps Survival Mode, has landed on Steam in beta form. Update 1.5 also features support for the upcoming add-on Far Harbor along with gameplay optimizations.
Survival adds additional challenges including no fast travel, saving only when you sleep, increased lethality, diseases, fatigue, danger and more. Players cannot Quicksave or do a full save through the menu, and Autosaves are a thing of the past.
At time of typing this post, my character is currently burdened by a -65% AP regeneration rate due to Lethargy (an illness that requires antibiotics) and a few other debuffs due to being Overtired and Thirsty. My sole survivor is constantly thirsty. While I like that there’s a Wellness mechanic in place, my good friend Heather over at Hey, Heather Bee! Then you’re all set, just hop into the game and either load up your old save or start a new one, but make sure you go to Options > Gameplay and switch your difficulty to Survival to try out the new features!
There’s no way to teleport back to the homestead, so travel and exploration play a bit differently. As a result, the best way to start your day in post-apocalyptia is with a nice hearty breakfast the moment you wake up – maybe some Sugar Bombs and a tall glass of purified water. At first, I tried to power through the stamina punishments, but I actually found that I enjoyed the game more when adhering to a stricter schedule. Between this fact and the sparse caches of ammo spread across the Commonwealth, accuracy matters a whole lot more than it does in other difficulties. Sure, you could feasibly scavenge all your food and water, but it’s much easier to build your own resource pools to dip into when the time comes.
Additionally, if you’re new to Fallout 4, it may be better to start the game on a different difficulty setting, as the lack of fast travel in Survival Mode makes for some long backtracking across the map. While some enterprising players have already attempted to preview Survival mode by making Fallout 4 mods that simulate some of the gameplay tweaks, there’s no doubt that news of the real Survival mode nearing beta testing is cause for excitement. Gamers will have a chance to explore the new DLC using the same gameplay methods they tackled the entire Boston Commonwealth win during the launch content, and then decide if it would be more fun attempting to take down the Mechanist while also managing their Vault Dweller’s sleep schedule.
For instance, it seems likely that having a companion like the award-winning Dogmeat would be even wiser than it has been in the past, since enemies deal much more damage and saving is now a luxury rather than a crutch. If you wanted to, you could also choose to turn on Hardcore mode, a setting that can cause you to question your life choices. As expected, you will have to deal with diseases and the like while combat is going to be overhauled to make enemies feel less like bullet sponges.

Naturally, this came with the caveat that the PC versions of Fallout 4 will get mod support first, but this was to be expected.
This means that you can expect to see the Creation Kit sometime in April, while the Xbox One gets mod support a month after, followed by the PS4 in June. You will notice that your stats start to reduce if you ignore your Wellness, including some debuffs such as Fatigue. This is exactly what I’ve wanted from survival games, and what I feel many games have done poorly in the past.
The insta-deaths are one thing, but if you combine that with having to go back a long way because it was the last bed you found, that can become really frustrating. I personally would recommend a new playthrough to really get a good feel for how the difficulty mode changed, especially as the early levels were especially unforgiving and I spent most of my time running around looking for a bed to save my game!
Before, you could feasibly pick a direction and march that way until you hit the end of the map. Having a sidekick helped to alleviate some of the difficulties survival mode brought with it. Among other things, Hardcore mode made it so that your character can suffer from dehydration, hunger, etc., and best of all, each individual bullet had a weight assigned to it.
I made it as a personal choice of not wasting too many bullets on enemies and not relying on perks.
Fatigue is almost like a mirror of Radiation, but instead of reducing your max HP it reduces your max AP instead, making combat a little tougher. However, I always felt like it needed a bit more of a challenge, and that the apocalypse really didn’t feel all that threatening. In the few minutes it took me to run to get the water from my water pump, I was tired again.
What might be a good solution to that is the ability to craft a sleeping bag you can carry with you and lay down — maybe indoors only?
This can easily stack up if you go without rest or sustenance for an extended period of time! I also felt that, much like in Skyrim, food and eating weren’t really all that important, and that made me sad.
I had so many Stimpacks that I just used them rather than eating or drinking, so it felt a bit wasted. In Fallout 4, at least the needs are easier to satisfy and it’s not possible to, oh, I don’t know, overcook your damn meat so it has a chance to give you food poisoning (really, Bohemia Interactive?
