Before  I get too excited in singing the praises of freeze-dried fruit of all descriptions, I will speak to some doubts I’ve heard about it over the years. These are valid concerns, but are not a good reason to pass on making it a part of your food storage.
Because we are so used to our store-bought foods being full of ingredients we don’t want to eat, such as high fructose corn syrup, it’s easy to assume that freeze-dried fruit is tainted with something! These are wholesome goodies you can enjoy without feeling even a tad guilty that you just might be serving your loved ones something that isn’t the best. When my family finishes up a can of FD fruit, we usually find some powder at the bottom of every can.
For an even quicker, more convenient breakfast, consider making this recipe in a crock pot the night before using oat groats. While you can also use freeze-dried fruit for baking into cobbler, pie, and other baked goods, at my house we like to eat it straight-up plain. All freeze-dried fruit is a great choice for healthy snacks and meals because they contain nothing but the fruit. The versatility of freeze-dried fruit means you don’t even need to wait until the SHTF to enjoy the delights of freeze-dried fruit. A private mailbox that provides a street address (not a Post Office box) makes you look more like someone with a real address.  This comes into play for drivers licenses, state ID cards, car insurance, job applications, etc. A pay-as-you-go cell phone provides a telephone for job calls and if you need emergency services. Most libraries have computer access.  If you have a wireless laptop, then those businesses that let you surf on their wi-fi connection for a cup of coffee are helpful, too. I'm the original Survival Mom, and have been helping moms worry less and enjoy their homes and families more for 5 years. Back in my road warrior days I sought out church parking lots as safe overnight parking places on my frequent cross-country travels.
I used to use fairly heavy screen spline to hold the top and sides of the screen material in the groove the glass rolls up in and only had to tape the bottom – worked great even in the mosquito months in the Everglades.
I spent years living in my 62 VW van as a result of economic circumstances, here are some pointers. The reality-based fictional possibilities are seemingly endless…and that doesn’t begin to touch on real-life events like Hurricane Sandy, the Polar Vortex, or Ebola!
I have to admit that over the past 7 years, I’ve become a little hardened, maybe even a little cynical, about headlines proclaiming that this year everything will collapse.
If Economic Cycle Theorists Are Correct, 2015-2020 Will Be Pure Hell For The United States (Gotta love headlines like that! Well, one scenario that was laid out many years ago, July of 2009, seems to be just as prophetic now as it did then.
Written by Robert Wayne Atkins, it’s a pretty detailed account of what could cause an economic collapse in our country and what the results would be.
Actually if you check out a site by the name of Lehmans and some of your local farm extensions you can and will find a lot of useful equipment that works only on horse power. Mona, a bank manager commented on another forum that his bank does, indeed, have a procedure to follow in case they ever shut down. Obviously the easiest way to teach your 2nd grader electrical engineering, short of enrolling him at MIT at the tender age of six, is to make sure one of his parents is also an electrical engineer.

Computer programming is everywhere in our lives, even if we don’t often recognize it for what it is.
Code.org  has a game based on the Disney movie Frozen that teaches coding via a series of puzzles to make snowflake designs. Khan Academy’s coding instruction program is less like a game and more like actual instruction. A solid foundation in mathematics is essential for someone wanting to enter the technology field.
The university in my town has a lot of programs open to the public that are specifically to encourage children’s interest in STEM fields. It’s important to bear in mind fruit is prized not for its caloric value, but for its other nutrients and the positive affect it has on morale.
This is just the result of the dried fruit rubbing against each other, all nice and cozy in the can. Reconstitute your chosen fruit first according to the instructions on the can, and drain excess water.
Mornings can be the most stressful part of the day during a hectic school year, but quick and easy breakfast options can go a long way toward keeping life simple. Strawberries slices are our favorite, but we have also very much enjoyed peaches and blueberries  (careful, they stain!) – the small size of the individual pieces makes them perfect snacking for young kids. Come join me on my journey to becoming more prepared to handle everyday emergencies and worst case scenarios. Insulate with space blankets and as many wool blankets you can fit behind the interior paneling. Avoid clutter, only have with you what you need for that night, caveat, have a storage unit if you are centered in a geographic region. Vent your vehicle daily, the stench of stuffy, dirty will build up fast, and is hard to clean out. Never use anything other than plain neutral colored fabric as an exterior curtain, beer ads, sports banners, anything with text, logos, banners, patterns, will draw negative attention.
Layer your curtains; plain neutral colors for the viewing public, insulating layers of wool, thermal curtain backing to keep your heat in. Keep toiletries and a plastic mirror in a separate bag or small backpack for convenience and discretion. If you find a place to set up a base camp of sorts (esp in an out of the way wooded area) you can be semipermanent. Making a mini-rocket stove and having a shelter makes cooking easier, provides a way to heat water for cleaning up (a copper coil heater in a large bucket can heat while one is cooking or making a campfire to warm up for the evening. A folding, hanging shower stall and a shower bag with nozzle makes for a hot shower even in freezing cold, and one can get dry and re-dressed before even feeling cold. Cooking: Oatmeal, dehydrated meals, fresh vegetables, soups and small cuts of meat are easy to cook with just hot water and a pot.

Instead of peeling and cooking your potatoes before you can mash them, you can mix these with water and heat to have mashed potatoes in minutes!
One Second After, reviewed here, describes a possible EMP (ElectroMagnetic Pulse) event that takes all our tech back to the pre-industrial era.
Look into historical agriculture and some of the older periodicals like boys life and Popular Mechanics. If, for some reason, you have failed to provide your child an engineer parent, do not despair!
Most animated movies these days are someone’s calculations just as much as they are art. Kids of my generation probably remember playing endless rounds of Number Munchers during computer class in elementary school. Don Cohen was a mathematician who ran a math clinic for children, wherein he introduced topics such as infinite series, fractals, and the Fibbonacci sequence. While Khan Academy also offers lectures, etc, on a variety of other topics, most of the site is devoted to mathematics.
Our local university had an engineering expo for middle and high school students this last spring. Some libraries have summer or after school programs for Lego Robotics or computer programming. If you’ve found something that you find useful for teaching STEM subjects, let us know in the comments!
Given the scope and purpose of food storage, I know there are some who think it’s an unnecessary luxury when there are so many buckets of wheat and beans and rice one must purchase. As for the price, Thrive Life, for one, regularly has pretty amazing sales on their freeze-dried products – especially in regards to strawberry slices.

If you add a collapsible basin you can fill it with hot water and go into a large bathroom stall to clean up and change.
For a floor, a baby inflatable 1-ring mini pool makes a perfect showerpan floor and warmly cleans your feet as you shower. We are fortunate to have access to dollar stores for a lot of cost-effective variety and options.

Whether you’re a homeschooling parent or just want to keep your kids from forgetting everything over the summer, tons of easily accessible STEM resources are available. Think of the scores of apps on your smartphone, or even the technology that allows you to read this article right now. Scratch is set up like an open source community that allows users to share their projects and the source code behind them. Electrical engineering requires a solid basis in multivariable calculus and differential equations. Happily, Number Munchers is now classified as abandonware, which makes it freely available to the public at no cost. Materials related to this clinic were made free and open to the internet upon his death in 2015. Those are the work of Vi Hart, who is an expert in explaining interesting calculus concepts with colored sharpies and a spiral notebook. The early math and basic arithmetic section are enjoyable enough that my four-year-old likes to dabble in it from time to time. Many local schools brought their students on field trips, but as it was open to the public I went along with my elementary-aged kids and we had a fabulous time. Having a storage place (I have a shed at a family member’s property) is also helpful. Note: Large reclosable Monster cans are the easiest for quickly bringing 3 cups of water to a boil, and can last weeks before giving out. Great for adding some flavor and color to your salads, soups, in recipes that call for vegetables, or as a healthy snack right out of the can. For weeks afterward I had visions of our family foraging for edible roots and berries in the forest and collecting water in a solar still, all the while ducking bands of cannibal motorcycle gangs!
Once you’ve made a couple of comments, your future comments are posted automatically. Most people who are adults today never heard much about coding until high school or college, but there are lots of opportunities for children to learn how to code when they are young.
You can play it in your internet browser at archive.org, or if you are more technologically inclined, you can download it and play it via a DOS emulator.
Calculus by and for Young People includes a series of videos (via YouTube), a workbook, and a textbook, both pdfs.
After watching a couple of her videos, you, too, will want nothing more than to go out and count the spirals on pinecones.
There is plenty for older students, as well, with courses in algebra, geometry, and calculus. There are about a million and one online tutorials about how use a lemon to light things on fire or a vaccuum cleaner out of a plastic bottle. I live in a college town, so our local thrift store is full of textbooks that the university bookstore wouldn’t buy back. The physics department also hosts a big astronomy day for the community every May, with activities for all ages.
While Walmart dry camping or in a corner parking lot with a car cover are options, finding a private place to set up a mini-campground is a great addition to either vehicular living option. Most of these projects only require basic items usually found around the house, in addition to wires and nine volt batteries. Last year I found a 1000+ page biology book with the glossy pages and fancy illustrations and it only set me back $4.
What kid wouldn’t want to tell you all about their school day when there are milkshakes on offer? It uses a self-directed learning approach that lets you choose which topics you’d like to cover, so you can save harder questions for later or skip easier ones.
I hand them out straight from the can or mixed with dry cereal and nuts for a homemade trail mix. For my first grader, looking at the pictures and reading the captions is more than satisfactory at this point.
