There are a lot of different things you can put on your bug out bag list and there’s not really one list of contents that you should follow. Without water, my pack is about 13-14 pounds and I carry 96oz of water in it for a total of about 20 pounds wet, plus my EDC and whatever else. Strapped to the molle on the outside of the bag is: A Gerber multi-tool that came with one of my Army weapons cleaning kits a few years ago. Two ranger bands to hold it together, which is just a couple of bands cut from a bicycle inner tube.
A tiny pair of plastic tweezers I got out of one of those little wallet credit card multi tool kits.
A piece of aluminum foil wrapped around a safety pin that’s wrapped with some dental floss. Part of a hacksaw blade that’s been sharpened into a small knife and its handle wrapped in tape (see pic above). A mini Altoids tin with an assortment of fish hooks, safety pins, fishing weights, a concave X-Acto blade and some aluminum foil. I’ll be adding some potassium permanganate to the kit as soon as I figure out exactly how I want to carry it and what I want to use with it. A Diamond SRH77CA antenna for the ham radio that sits across all three pockets, under the flaps. I’ve updated my entire system now but I wanted to keep this article intact for people who want to have a two-bag system.
My goal is to help families to understand how to intelligently protect their family and their way of life against real threats, without all the end-of-the-world doomsday crap. Would you think that a tri-band radio like the Yaesu vx-8 be a better option so that you can get to 6m repeaters? Former Counterintelligence Special Agent, US Army Chief Warrant Officer, and Combat Veteran. My personal go bag contentsThere are a lot of different things you can put on your bug out bag list and there’s not really one list of contents that you should follow.

99 freakin’ awesome ideas for your bug out bagLots of articles tell you the basics of what you need in your bug out bag. In no time, at all I found out quickly by simply searching the Internet that there was no shortage of recipes out there for exactly that purpose. The more unusual recipes have been given to me by some of my more unusual backwoods characters that I have met over the years.
Put all of the puree into a large mixing bowl, and beat in the salt and pepper, and the 1 ? tablespoons of cornstarch. Place the finished balls into sterilized jars, and add the STRAINED water from the cooking process to cover the fish balls completely in the jars for later use.
Later, these can be served by cooking them in a simple shrimp sauce, dumping the fish balls into the sauce and heating it over a low heat and served with rice or potatoes.
This is a great recipe for the campers, especially if you have had some cream go sour on you and you do not know what to do with it. Stir in the remaining butter, and scrape the drippings from the pan, then deglaze with the sour cream adding a little at a time.
If you want to serve something out of the ordinary to your guests, this will certainly fit the bill.
The best thing of this animal is its usually around every night during the warm months, and is found all over the country roads, from north to south.
Bake at 400 degrees F for 10 minutes to brown the meat, then reduce the temperature in the oven to 325 degrees F and add the 2 cups of beef stock and cook for at least one hour or until tender.
Some people unfamiliar with proper game handling or preparation will complain about a gamey flavor of their deer.
The beginning of the season these deer were in top shape with plenty of fat on their ribs, but by the end of the rut, the ones in the 4 -7 year range are beat and tired. Thus, the blood will not leave that liver flavor and no… the salt-water brine does not leave a salty flavor either, that is a myth. Next, the fat on deer is not regular fat, its tallow, and just like sheep’s tallow it is best removed or cooked over an open flame to melt it away, it can taste very waxy to most people. During the high point of a Rut even if you get your skinning knife on one of these glands it can contaminate the rest of the animal simply by running your blade along it after while skinning it out. I hope some of you will try these recipes, and let us know what you think of them, and the very least keep them for the future, for when times get tough.

Everybody’s experience may be different, but my personal experience leads me to tell folks that racoon can be some of the gamiest meat they will ever eat, even worse than groundhog. At least this way you’ll have a decent idea of what one way is to pack a bug out bag.
Especially with the snow recently throughout the rest of the country, my pack would be absolutely different if I didn’t live here. You could also call it a bug out bag but that gets confusing with my main pack so I changed their names. One of them has sugar and the other one is empty at the moment but I have it in there because it fits and weights almost nothing. I got pretty much put out of commission in Central America one time due to walking through the jungle for a couple of days.

I doubt I’d really need a scalpel for medical use but they could come in handy for other uses. These might be super useful if you need to close up a pretty big gash to get someone to a medic.
You need to change these out occasionally because they’ll break down just sitting in your pack.
The TSA allows you to fly with some scissors in some cases so I need to find a good pair that I could carry with me as I travel. My main pack has a solar charger for rechargeable batteries but I have two non-rechargeable ones in this bag because they hold their charge longer when not being used. You can start a fire with a thin strip of aluminum foil wrapped with paper or tinder by touching the ends either to the posts of a 9v battery or putting two AA batteries end to end. I like this one because it has a windproof flame on one end and a tiny LED light on the other. Hey, I had a few of these left over from my last deployment and they don’t weigh anything or take up any room, so why not? This is the type that has snaps so it works really well as a poncho but you can use it as part of an emergency shelter.
I spent several months rethinking it and now have my kit all in one bag – and got the whole thing under 25 pounds!
I hope to use the external pouches to make a full Fire-Kit and an H20 kit (we’ll see how the stuff fits once I get to the point of putting those together). That’s something that would take a few days to do correctly and at least a half a day plus travel to just get a decent idea.
It would be a shame to loose the electronics… What ideas would you consider in EMP proofing your gear?
I grew up in the woods and spent a lifetime in various environments from deserts to jungles to politically-sensitive urban environments, and I'm here to tell you what I know. When considering disaster preparedness, keep in mind that what survival gear and emergency supplies you add to your bug out bag and then pack for your survival kit can mean the difference between life and death, or at least affect your level of comfort if SHTF and you had to get outta dodge.
Over that time, I have accumulated many recipes from simple home cooking recipes, camping, and survival meals and some very unusual meals that seem truly desperate.
Not wanting to sound like everyone else on the net, I decided to gather, together some of my more unusual, but successful meals. Those grey bearded men, the trappers, and woodsmen that I have encountered in my many travels over as many years.
I have updated it by using modern kitchen equipment to speed up the process, and ease the labor.
Place them in a stainless steel pot and cover with cold water and the red wine, and let stand for at least 2 hours to marinate. Bring to a boil, and reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours, until the meat is about to fall off the bone.
The next recipes may not sound appealing to some, however I assure you they can be very decent fair for an open mined prepper.
How about French Fried Skunk, the meat is usually darker then rabbit, so you can call it wild turkey if you like.
As with our previous recipe these critters are abundant throughout the lower 48 states, and even up into lower half of Canada.
Place the Raccoon breast down, with the legs folded underneath trussed with string like a roast chicken then place in the roast pan. Making sure you baste every 10-15 minutes with the beef stock to keep the meat from drying out.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to have some of these tips passed down to me by experienced outdoorsmen, many of the tricks I unfortunately had to learn the hard way though. Often they mistakenly blame it on the deer’s age, thinking it was because he was old, this is hardly ever the case with bucks or bulls. Some of these bucks will not make it through the winter, after losing to much weight; they often die from the extreme weather. Although you should remember to rinse the meat after brining it, and pat it dry with a clothe before cooking it, especially if you are trying to brown the meat in a pan for a stew or even a roast. Now when boning out a deer, I try to remove as much of this tallow as you can, if not all of it, most of it. This will also subscribe you to my newsletter so you stay up-to-date with everything: new articles, ebooks, products and more! It could also be a get-home bag really, depending on where I’m at when I first need it. Your bug out kit should be a bug out system, starting with your EDC and working its way up to everything you have at your bug out location and have stashed along the way. Having 2 is pretty nice to tie up a tarp for a small shelter. A small keyring flashlight that came with one of my care packages I got in Afghanistan is attached to it. The big thing to look for is something like this that you can put on one-handed in case you have to put it on yourself. One of the things I’ll be doing when I redo this bag is putting them in the same location. I have it set up though so that if I had to drop the pack, I can reach in for a few things quickly. This will be the bag that someone grabs at the house to get into the vehicle if we have to hit the road.
Here’s what Graywolf from Graywolf Survival carries and why, as well as some suggestions on how to plan your EDC kit. This is currently the list of the top 10 best-selling prepper and survival gear items, along with an explanation for each. When I asked for this topic, writing about outdoor cooking, I figured I could simply list out a few of my better recipes geared for the Modern Survival Online reader.
Here are some of those meals that I have tried in my life, and was pleasantly surprised by them all.
Now some of these recipes can be substituted for what ever is readily available, but these recipes are tried and true recipes for the game they are designed for.

Stir in the vinegar, and simmer for 5 more minutes, then pour the sauce over the fish and serve, with your favorite side dish.
Remove the ducks from the water and pat them dry, seasoning them generously inside and out with the salt and pepper.
Next, melt two Tablespoons of butter, in a fry pan adding the salt pork and onions to cook until the onions are caramelized. Remove the birds, and the moose strips, from the pot and set aside for later, you may cover these with foil to keep warm.
They are a collection of odd recipes by some of the best survivalist that ever lived, those people who lived through the last depression and our pioneers, and ancestors from the distant past. I want to pass these tips on to you readers, and I hope this makes you appreciate wild game as much as I do. Those people that complain about gaminess have usually been fed an improperly butchered animal. What one should also do to prepare a feast of game meat for the more squeamish eaters is soak it in brine over night. Even a commercial abattoir, will bleed a domestic animal immediately, often while they are still kicking.
Also, after back at camp or home, and you are wrapping the game in butcher paper, try to trim off all silver skin with a fillet knife. A butcher who is only use to domestic buttering, may not be aware of these glands and where they are located.
I really appreciate your tips on how to prepare wild game before cooking, not knowing how to handle it can ruin a really good meat. Chemical reactions between the acid and lead plates in the battery help make electricity to start the car. I purposely kept it small and light and can easily pull out a couple things If I really need to. This bag is super tough and pretty much the perfect size but I’ll be changing it at some point.
You can also cut them as those chicken houses do it, where every piece has a little chunk of solid meat on it still. Granted some late season bucks can be a bit worn and tired beat down by the rut, but they started out in their prime. Because game animals such as Deer, Elk, and Moose require a completely different way of handling then Beef or domestic animals do.
This sinew is far too chewy to be eaten, and it shrinks up during the cooking process, like a snare drum. These scent glands if not removed from the meat especially before grinding it into hamburger or sausage will contaminate the final product, making it inedible. They are also used in many household cleaning products, baking soda, and to make fertilizer for crops. It’s not a full-on 72 hour bag that you may expect unless you combine it with the backpack. 20 pounds doesn’t sound like much but it gets heavy after a while, especially if you add extra water or other gear. It would certainly be a shame to lose them but it would be a very likely shame to have to carry all that extra weight for protection that would be inadequate anyway.
Next, using a tablespoon of the mixture at a time roll the fish mixture into golf ball sized balls to be boiled in water. When the butter turns brown and gives off a nutty aroma, lower the heat and place the trout into the pan two at a time, so as not to cool the pan to quickly. After remove the soup from the heat and strain through a sieve into a large sauce pan, and add the cattail shoots, and cook for another 15 minutes or until shoots are tender.
It is a real survival recipe, and is always good to know you can turn anything into a gourmet meal if you have the patience. Prepare a soup pot with enough water to cover the meat, while not allow the water to boil over during cooking.
Melt the remaining butter into a small saucepan and add some cinnamon, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper.
I use this for the deer family, and for game birds, you may even add some sugar to the salt-water brine. Some hunters leave the outer silver skin on as a protection against freezer burn, and then they removing it just before cooking. Using a large saucepan full of salted water, bring to a boil then set low to simmer, and add the fish balls to the water for 5 minutes at a low simmer.
The salt in brine uses a capillary action to draw out the blood from the meat, and works as a way of killing bacteria too. In fact, this skin is so tough to chew it was used in the making of bowstrings by the Native Americans for thousands of years… that is how tough it is. These are just a few examples of how the chemistry of bases and acids help our bodies function. In 99% of cases, that doesn’t make any difference and may even be an advantage in certain scenarios.
Place the ducks in the center of the foil, smear with butter and wrap the foil around the ducks, enclosing them completely.
In that case, I’d drape a light jacket over it on my shoulder and start looking for an acceptable replacement. This one works for now and isn’t designed for fully bugging out by itself anyway but I could if I had to with it.
