Especially with the snow recently throughout the rest of the country, my pack would be absolutely different if I didn’t live here. You could also call it a bug out bag but that gets confusing with my main pack so I changed their names. One of them has sugar and the other one is empty at the moment but I have it in there because it fits and weights almost nothing. I got pretty much put out of commission in Central America one time due to walking through the jungle for a couple of days.

I doubt I’d really need a scalpel for medical use but they could come in handy for other uses. These might be super useful if you need to close up a pretty big gash to get someone to a medic.
You need to change these out occasionally because they’ll break down just sitting in your pack.
The TSA allows you to fly with some scissors in some cases so I need to find a good pair that I could carry with me as I travel. My main pack has a solar charger for rechargeable batteries but I have two non-rechargeable ones in this bag because they hold their charge longer when not being used. You can start a fire with a thin strip of aluminum foil wrapped with paper or tinder by touching the ends either to the posts of a 9v battery or putting two AA batteries end to end. I like this one because it has a windproof flame on one end and a tiny LED light on the other. Hey, I had a few of these left over from my last deployment and they don’t weigh anything or take up any room, so why not? This is the type that has snaps so it works really well as a poncho but you can use it as part of an emergency shelter.
I spent several months rethinking it and now have my kit all in one bag – and got the whole thing under 25 pounds!
I hope to use the external pouches to make a full Fire-Kit and an H20 kit (we’ll see how the stuff fits once I get to the point of putting those together). That’s something that would take a few days to do correctly and at least a half a day plus travel to just get a decent idea.

I grew up in the woods and spent a lifetime in various environments from deserts to jungles to politically-sensitive urban environments, and I'm here to tell you what I know. When considering disaster preparedness, keep in mind that what survival gear and emergency supplies you add to your bug out bag and then pack for your survival kit can mean the difference between life and death, or at least affect your level of comfort if SHTF and you had to get outta dodge.
Over that time, I have accumulated many recipes from simple home cooking recipes, camping, and survival meals and some very unusual meals that seem truly desperate.
Not wanting to sound like everyone else on the net, I decided to gather, together some of my more unusual, but successful meals. Those grey bearded men, the trappers, and woodsmen that I have encountered in my many travels over as many years.
I have updated it by using modern kitchen equipment to speed up the process, and ease the labor.

What one should also do to prepare a feast of game meat for the more squeamish eaters is soak it in brine over night. Even a commercial abattoir, will bleed a domestic animal immediately, often while they are still kicking.
Also, after back at camp or home, and you are wrapping the game in butcher paper, try to trim off all silver skin with a fillet knife. A butcher who is only use to domestic buttering, may not be aware of these glands and where they are located.

Because game animals such as Deer, Elk, and Moose require a completely different way of handling then Beef or domestic animals do.
This sinew is far too chewy to be eaten, and it shrinks up during the cooking process, like a snare drum. These scent glands if not removed from the meat especially before grinding it into hamburger or sausage will contaminate the final product, making it inedible. They are also used in many household cleaning products, baking soda, and to make fertilizer for crops. It’s not a full-on 72 hour bag that you may expect unless you combine it with the backpack. 20 pounds doesn’t sound like much but it gets heavy after a while, especially if you add extra water or other gear. It would certainly be a shame to lose them but it would be a very likely shame to have to carry all that extra weight for protection that would be inadequate anyway.
Next, using a tablespoon of the mixture at a time roll the fish mixture into golf ball sized balls to be boiled in water. When the butter turns brown and gives off a nutty aroma, lower the heat and place the trout into the pan two at a time, so as not to cool the pan to quickly. After remove the soup from the heat and strain through a sieve into a large sauce pan, and add the cattail shoots, and cook for another 15 minutes or until shoots are tender.
It is a real survival recipe, and is always good to know you can turn anything into a gourmet meal if you have the patience. Prepare a soup pot with enough water to cover the meat, while not allow the water to boil over during cooking.

I use this for the deer family, and for game birds, you may even add some sugar to the salt-water brine. Some hunters leave the outer silver skin on as a protection against freezer burn, and then they removing it just before cooking. Using a large saucepan full of salted water, bring to a boil then set low to simmer, and add the fish balls to the water for 5 minutes at a low simmer.
The salt in brine uses a capillary action to draw out the blood from the meat, and works as a way of killing bacteria too. In fact, this skin is so tough to chew it was used in the making of bowstrings by the Native Americans for thousands of years… that is how tough it is. These are just a few examples of how the chemistry of bases and acids help our bodies function. In 99% of cases, that doesn’t make any difference and may even be an advantage in certain scenarios.
