Both camps: Some buy the Commodore ute as a workhorse, but plenty will also buy this VF version as a performance car.
HOLDEN again expects to net a fair share of weekend warriors, and those wanting a coupe with a very big boot, with its revised VF Commodore Ute. Just like the outgoing VE version, Holden says about half of all Utes to roll off the showroom floor will be high-performance V8 versions – which thanks to price cuts are now up to $5000 cheaper, and also better on fuel. As with its sedan sibling, the load-lugging Commodore’s biggest changes come under the skin, with a new interior design and plentiful use of weight-saving aluminium.
By making the car lighter and slipperier, and by fitting a new electric steering system, Holden has also improved fuel efficiency. As well as the price cuts and better engine, base variants add premium gear such as automated parking, an eight-inch touchscreen with a MyLink smartphone-based infotainment system, and remote vehicle start. SV6 versions pair the same engine to either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions priced from an identical $32,990 – this is a $5500 discount, more than any other Ute variant. Extra features over the base include blind-spot monitoring, sports suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, a limited-clip diff for the manual, sports seats, soft tonneau and LED daytime running lights. The entry price is still $4400 more than Ford’s base automatic Falcon ute, and the revised SV6 now undercuts the Falcon XR6 ute by $2200. The discount over the old version, at $3500, is less than the discount applied to the SV6, meaning the price gap between the two has widened. For an extra $6000 you can get the SS-V Redline which, thanks to a relatively miserly $1500 price chop, now costs $48,490. The Lion brand has rolled out its new VF sedan tech on the ute version, too, including an electric park brake with automatic release, brakes that stop it rolling back on a hill, and Trailer Sway Control – although the towing capacity appears to have dropped to 1600kg from 2100kg.
Options such as a bundled blind-spot warning system and one that will even warn you if you are about to back into a passing car ($350), sat-nav ($750) and soft tonneau cover ($490) can be added to low-grade versions.

Under the bonnet, VW will introduce a series of super-efficient three-cylinder 1.5-litre TDI diesels – ranging from 74bhp to 120bhp. The Golf Mk8 will, of course, arrive on the market as a hatchback first, but an Estate spin-off, as well as hotter GTI, GTD and R versions will follow. Elsewhere at the VW Group, bosses have outlined their intentions for an Audi Q6 SUV in 2018, followed by the Porsche Mission E saloon before the end of the decade – both of which will adopt all-electric drivetrains. The Group’s new electric MEB architecture to be employed by both the Audi and Porsche will also underpin the upcoming all-electric VW Phaeton limousine, which is due by 2020, too. Now, no sensible car manufacturer can afford NOT to have a Sports Utility Vehicle or crossover in its range.


Such has been the success of this segment that 2015 was the most successful year for the outgoing Tiguan. Volkswagen has done the sensible thing and decided to create an all-new car which is not unlike an evolution of the original. Add to that the 615 litres of luggage space (1,655 litres with the rear seats folded) and you have a serious load carrier. There’s more of a premium feel inside too with slick design, premium materials and excellent build quality.
The new Tiguan has to be good because it’s competing in the most competitive SUV sector, up against the likes of the Ford Kuga, Honda HR- V, Toyota RAV4 and best-selling Nissan Qashqai.
A high driving position coupled with plenty of space and light means the Tiguan cabin is a very pleasant place to be.
I tested a few versions, but for me, the pick of the bunch in terms of the package and value for money was the Tiguan SEL TDI 4Motion with seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
Like many diesels, engine noise is noticeable under harsh acceleration, but soon settles down and, overall, the Tiguan is very refined. The six-speed manual on offer is good, but the slick seven-speed auto suits the car better. The updated German flagship is expected to launch in 2017 and will feature exterior design changes and a modified interior.
As you can see, the headlights of the S-Class will be sharper and will have a new interior graphic, while a set of restyled rear lights will also be fitted to the car.
Luckily, the engineers did not get the chance to cover up the interior on time, so our spy photographers managed to snap a few shots of the S-Class facelift’s dash. Concerning powertrains, Mercedes-Benz is expected to launch a new range of six-cylinder units with the S-Class. We are talking about the new inline-six engines, marking the end of the V6 era for the German carmaker. Furthermore, the new engine family could be built on the same manufacturing line, reducing production and development costs for the German corporation. It also gets the sedan’s more aerodynamic re-styled nose, although there are no styling changes at the rear. However, to compare it with the base model like-for-like, you must add $2000 for the optional automatic. Once again, you can get dedicated LPG versions of both the base ute and the SV6 for an extra $2500.

On top of that, the German giant will now take a closer look at other areas of the business that it thinks can return significant savings – both financially and environmentally. The current Mk7 car is available in several shapes and sizes, with power ranging from small turbo petrols to hot diesels and plug-in hybrids. Plus, there will be more space inside thanks to more efficient packaging, as well as innovative features like gesture control and the Passat’s TFT dash. As always, it’ll be immediately recognisable as a Golf, with smart LED headlamps and a sharper, more sculpted grille. We’ve not heard about any plans for a Cabriolet model, though, and one is unlikely to arrive before at least 2020.
