Joliet Junior College students, high school students, and the community are invited to the first STEM Transfer Fair on JJC’s Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet, in the T-Building on Wednesday, Dec.
STEM, which stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Math,” will appeal to students with an interest in those subjects, looking to pursue careers in computers, engineering, scentific and managerial positions. Luann DiMonte, JJC Technical Department specialist, said students who pursue STEM-related fields should expect a high starting salary after graduating with a bachelor’s degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the STEM field has grown 22 percent in the past ten years, and it is only going to continue to blossom.
JJC Transfer Specialist Cheryl Turrise said the STEM Transfer Fair is a perfect place for students and others to start researching these programs at four-year schools.
JJC is the ideal place for students pursuing this career path to start because its Technical Department is constantly growing and offers a variety of subject study areas in the STEM field.
Such as in 2014, the Technical Department will introduce a new, STEM-related course in robotics. An immigrant cook is put to work in appalling conditions, for 14 hours a day, seven days a week, and not paid a cent.
The legal confusion between a job with appalling conditions and criminal exploitation means it can be difficult to identify and prosecute 21st-century slave traders and people traffickers.
In this case, a deal had been made between the young kitchen worker’s father and an Australian restaurateur. For almost six weeks the young man from southern India worked at least 14 hours every day in a chain of restaurants in the lower Blue Mountains.
Rajendran’s story – trapped in a job for which, it was reported, he would have to work “very hard, like a machine” for 365 days a year – can be pieced together from transcripts of hearings in the NSW District Court involving people trafficking charges (which were not proved) and in the Federal Magistrates Court for workplace offences (which were). UTS Associate Professor, Law, Jennifer Burn, who is also the director of Anti-Slavery Australia, says the case highlights the complexity of determining the difference between substandard working conditions and criminal exploitation of labour.
The International Labour Organisation estimates about 21 million people are in forced labour around the world, more than half of those in the Asia-Pacific region. However, a new piece of legislation gives her hope a more accurate picture will emerge and the tiny number of prosecutions will increase.
The Crimes Legislation Amendment (Slavery, Slavery-like Conditions and People Trafficking) Act, which came into force in March, introduces the new offence of forced labour.
Coercion is defined in the new law to include “taking advantage of a person’s vulnerability” – something that will be tested and defined in the courts. Burn says that when people think about trafficking and slavery often they think about “unlawful non-citizens, people working on the fringes, in the shadows”. Increasingly, though, the spotlight is turning to young men, typically under 30, who have come to work in skilled jobs.

The chairman of the NSW Community Relations Commission, Stepan Kerkyasharian, says much needs to be done to build community awareness of what falls within the ambit of trafficking. Australian Red Cross operates the Support for Trafficked People Program and has helped 122 people since 2009. And we only take the wealthiest students from the Asia Pacific because these countries pose a higher risk - so what choice does that leave Rajendran's father? Notwithstanding, this is an important law and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. The largest sperm bank in the world has started turning down redheaded donors because there is too little demand for their sperm. Mr Schou said the only reliable demand for sperm from redheaded donors from Ireland, where he said it sold “like hot cakes”.
Cryos’s stores have now reached their peak capacity of 70 litres of semen, and Mr Schou has a waiting list of 600 donors. He said sperm from donors with brown hair and brown eyes was particularly in demand, because of the bank’s large customer base in Spain, Italy and Greece. Indian sperm was also hard to find, he said, because India does not allow sperm or eggs to be exported, causing a problem for childless international Indians. The Department of Geology at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina, invites applications for two one-year faculty positions beginning August 2011. Applications must include a letter of interest, vita, copies of transcripts of all college and university work (official copies due upon employment), and the names and contact information (including e-mail) of three referees familiar with the applicant’s teaching and scholarship.
The Geology Department at Appalachian State University has 18 faculty members and more than 80 majors.
Board of intermediates and Secondary education (BISE) Multan Board will declare the result of Matric part II(2nd part) on 20th July 2016. JJC’s fair will have up to 20 big-name and local university representatives available for transfer questions, information on STEM programs, scholarships and more. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for all STEM positions was $77,880 in May 2009. Future and current JJC students in STEM-related majors should make transfer decisions as soon as possible because many schools that offer STEM have strict, structured programs.
Other STEM-related classes are also coming in the future, answering JJC’s goal of offering students courses that respond to the demands of the labor market. Anbalagan Rajendran, 24, arrived in Sydney with no money of his own, poor English and no appreciation of his rights.
His passport was taken from him and he was told that if he complained he would be deported.

Official numbers in Australia are small but the problem is significantly under-reported, Professor Burn says. They’ve been sponsored to Australia by an employer, and their skills have been recognised, but “even a person holding …  the most prestigious of working visas can find themselves in a situation of terrible exploitation”, she says.
Exploited labour is for men, women and kids in struggling immigrant, refugee and asylum seeker families - remember the fish and chip shops in the 1970s?
Including with trafficked sex workers dobbed in by their employers when they are 'finished' and used to have too few legs to stand on - so we just had to deport them. Cryos’s director, Ole Schou, said that there had been a surge in donations in recent years, allowing the facility to become much more picky about its donors.
