For many Christmas is a time of loneliness, isolation, violence and family and relationship problems, or even thoughts of suicide. The following is published with the permission of The Mental Health First Aid Training and Research Program.
Before being able to give mental health first aid, first aiders need some basic knowledge about mental health problems so that they may be able to recognise that a mental illness may be developing. Similarly, the Mental Health First Aid Program provides an action plan on how to help a person in a mental health crisis or developing mental health problems. The initial task is to approach the person, look out for any crises and assist the person to deal with them. If the first aider has no concerns that the person is in crisis, they can ask the person about how they are feeling and how long they have been feeling that way and move on to ACTION 2. Make it easier for the other person to feel they can talk freely about their problems without being judged. It is important to listen non-judgmentally at all times when providing mental health first aid.
Once a person with a mental health problem has felt listened to, it can be easier for the first aider to offer support and information.
The first aider can also tell a person about any options available to them for help and support. Encourage the person to use self-help strategies and to seek the support of family, friends and others. After providing mental health first aid to a person who is in distress, you may feel worn out, frustrated or even angry. Event details may change at any time, always check with the event organizer when planning to attend this event or purchase tickets. We run classes at our Coquitlam venue conveniently located near the Coquitlam Centre Mall and also at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver through North Shore Community Resources (NSCR). Individuals attending our training will gain understanding of the multitude of expectations associated with supervising staff in the workplace. The training is provided in a friendly, informative and supportive environment at our Centre in Birmingham. TECC provides regular booster sessions and group supervision practice in relation to our developing effective supervision training. Written activities and practical creative exercises provide consistent opportunities to promote confidence and competence, enabling the training to be evaluated and evidenced. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, can save the life of someone whose heart has stopped. More than one thousand of the victims received some kind of medical assistance from witnesses.

The American Heart Association changed its guidelines for CPR chest presses in two thousand five. He argues that more witnesses to cardiac arrests would provide treatment if rescue breaths are not a part of CPR. Cardiac arrest kills more than three hundred thousand people in the United States every year. The University of South Florida, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Winthrop University are collaborating to support a new school psychology training program in the Virgin Islands. It is important that the first aider does not ignore the symptoms they have noticed or assume that they will just go away. In any first aid course, participants learn an action plan for the best way to help someone who is injured or ill. When listening, it is important to set aside any judgments made about the person or their situation, and avoid expressing those judgments. The support to offer at the time includes emotional support, such as empathising with how they feel and giving them the hope of recovery, and practical help with tasks that may seem overwhelming at the moment. A person with mental health problems will generally have a better recovery with appropriate professional help. Other people who have experienced mental health problems can also provide valuable help in the person’s recovery.
You may also need to deal with the feelings and reactions you set aside during the encounter.
It covers skills needed to recognize, prevent and respond to cardiovascular emergencies for adults, children, and babies, CPR Level B, AED, and other topics including choking, airway and breathing emergencies, and prevention of disease transmission. TECC recognises the transitional period may alter the dynamics within an organisation and actively seeks to demonstrate how obstacles and barriers to effective supervision can be overcome.
Training aims to build upon current knowledge, demonstrate and reflect upon the positive qualities and attributes a supervisor requires, and opportunity to experience creative approaches which actively engage and maintain the supervisory alliance. The written activities and practical creative exercises provide consistent opportunities to promote confidence and competence, enabling the training to be evaluated and evidenced. Delegates will receive detailed literature and additional resources to further support and promote the effective use of supervision. TECC provides regular booster sessions and group supervision practice in relation to our reflective practice and supervision training at our Centre in Birmingham. It said people should increase the number of chest presses from fifteen to thirty for every two breaths given. The American Heart Association says about ninety-five percent of victims die before they get to a medical center.
If a first aider believes the person they care about is experiencing symptoms of mental illness, they should approach the person and see if there is anything they can do to assist them.
The most common mnemonic used to remember the procedure for this is DRABC(D), which stands for Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing and Compressions (Defibrillation).

Although the action of assisting with a crisis is the highest priority, the other actions in the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan may need to occur first.
Most people who are experiencing distressing emotions and thoughts want to be listened to empathetically before being offered options and resources that may help them. Also, the first aider can ask the person if they would like some information about mental health problems. However, they may not know about the various options that are available to them, such as medication, counselling or psychological therapy, support for family members, assistance with vocational and educational goals, and assistance with income and accommodation. This course is designed for childcare workers, parents, grandparents and babysitters and is recognized by The Child Care Licensing Branch.

Studies show that many people do not want to perform mouth-to-mouth breathing on a stranger for fear of getting a disease. Department of Education has provided the University of the Virgin Islands with a training grant to train local educators and mental health professionals to become school psychologists. The first aider will not always need to apply all actions as it will depend on the condition of the injured person. If you do this, though, you need to remember to respect the person’s right to privacy; if you talk to someone, don’t share the name of the person you helped, or any personal details which might make them identifiable to the person you choose to share with.
The aim of the training is to increase confidence and competence in relation to attending supervision prepared, managing time efficiently and effectively.
Additional support in relation to policy and procedures can be provided upon request for companies and organisations. For TECC's 10 week supervision programme please feel free to contact Donna James. Only ten percent of the victims treated with traditional CPR survived with good brain ability.
For example, once the first aider determines that the person is fully conscious, the subsequent actions of ABC(D) are not needed. The helping person has to use good judgment about the order and the relevance of these actions and needs to be flexible and responsive to the person they are helping.
