Back in May, I accepted a posi­tion as direc­tor of oper­a­tions for Nur­ture Idaho, a non-profit that edu­cates kids and fam­i­lies about mak­ing healthy food choices. We’re at the start of one of Nurture’s sig­na­ture Food & Fun classes, and this group of eager 5– and 6-year-olds is here to learn about mak­ing healthy eat­ing choices.
It’s these kinds of results that have led to a hot demand for Nurture’s pro­gram­ming in our Cen­tral Idaho com­mu­nity.
Nur­ture has been pro­vid­ing food edu­ca­tion to kids and par­ents in the Chicago area since 2008. It wasn’t long before other schools caught wind of the Nur­ture Ele­men­tary Nutri­tion and Well­ness Pro­gram, too. When Nur­ture first started, Kathryn spent a lot of time try­ing to con­vince peo­ple of the impor­tance of food edu­ca­tion.
Food & Fun has been a big hit with stu­dents too, which Nur­ture pro­gram coor­di­na­tor Amy Schlat­ter attrib­utes — at least in part — to the food tast­ings. Learn more about Nur­ture Idaho’s work in schools on the Nur­ture site and on the Edi­ble School­yard Net­work.

Now, thanks to Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move cam­paign and orga­ni­za­tions such as Jamie Oliver’s Food Rev­o­lu­tion and The Edi­ble School­yard Project, school admin­is­tra­tors, teach­ers and par­ents are com­ing to her and ask­ing for it. By writ­ing about it, I hope to pro­vide par­ents and edu­ca­tors with ideas and inspi­ra­tion for mak­ing healthy changes in their own schools. Although you're carrying an extra person, don't go by the adage of "eating for two." You only need about an extra 150 calories a day during your first trimester. Get those calories the healthy way, by adding extra fruits and vegetables, milk, whole-grain bread, and lean meat to your diet.Red Flag SymptomsAny of these symptoms could be a sign that something is seriously wrong with your pregnancy.
