Archived exhibitions are no longer available for booking but are maintained as a virtual record of past Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) programs. Animal Connections: Our Journey Together is a traveling exhibit on an 18-wheel truck that introduces visitors of all ages to the complex bond between humans and animals. Created to inspire the next generation of veterinarians, the exhibit uses a dynamic combination of interactive learning stations, films and touch screen videos, and three-dimensional settings to explore topics about animals in the home, on the farm, in the wild, at the zoo, and in the veterinary clinic.
All people benefit from an enduring bond with diverse members of the animal kingdom —whether they are pets in the home, livestock on the farm or animals in the wild. Animal health is directly tied to our own well-being, and we can look to veterinarians as active partners in ensuring our shared health. Diverse jobs in veterinary fields bring to bear skills of problem-solving, investigative science, communication, business savvy and compassion. 1,000 square feet of interior space with interactive displays, video screens, games, and hands-on and minds-on activities. From the cows that provide the milk for a bowl of cereal to the deer nibbling on a shrub in the park, from sea lions working with their trainers at the zoo to puppies chasing balls in the yard, the connections humans have with animals are vast. Developed to inspire future generations of veterinary professionals, the free exhibition explores the shared responsibility for animals’ health and well-being.
Divided into five sections, the exhibition focuses on animals in the home, on the farm, at the zoo, in the wild and at the veterinary clinic. In addition to exploring the expert care that zoo animals receive, the exhibition features enrichment objects used at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo to encourage natural behaviors in animals. The AVMA, established in 1863, is a not-for-profit association representing more than 84,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia and uniformed services.

Vets castrate a young colt while the next candidate awaits his turn earlier this month in Hampshire, England. The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Trust joined up with the British Horse Society (BHS) and the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) this month to pilot two separate projects to help horse welfare in the United Kingdom and abroad.
The BEVA Trust is the British Equine Veterinary Association’s philanthropic arm and was established almost 50 years ago.
The initiative was an important trial run for further clinics proposed over the coming year. The second BEVA Trust project saw two veterinarians flying to Casablanca in Morocco to help provide teaching at SPANA's annual Congress. Julian Samuelson, chairman of the BEVA Trust committee, said, "We are encouraged by the very positive response by BEVA members to the call for volunteers. Do you have a farm policy or extra liability insurance (such as an umbrella policy) to protect you and your property because you own horses? Seek the advice of a qualified veterinarian before proceeding with any diagnosis, treatment, or therapy.

Sea turtles weighing up to 700 pounds glide through the ocean waters off Florida’s Atlantic Coast. It’s the Sea Turtle Hospital at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, and on Jan. Burhalter released Micklers into the ocean after helping to treat the turtle for three weeks. Green sea turtles can live more than 80 years and grow up to 5 feet long, according to National Geographic.
Micklers was taken to the turtle hospital because it had trouble swimming and diving due to gas buildup in the intestines.
Other threats facing sea turtles include collisions with boats, entanglement in fishing nets and the ingestion of plastics or pollution.

Veterinarians must take pictures, measurements and radiographs of the sea turtles that they treat. Once the turtles have recovered from their wounds and illnesses, their blood work is normal, and they are eating and swimming normally, they are released back into the ocean.
A common disease that veterinarians at the hospital see is FP or fibropapilloma, which causes tumors to grow on various parts of the body, impeding swimming, diving and vision. In order to learn more information about veterinary technicians, go over the lesson titled What Do Veterinary Technicians Do? Presented by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service to mark the 150th anniversary of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the project is made possible through the generous support of the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and of founding sponsor Zoetis, an independent company that discovers, develops and manufacturers veterinary vaccines and medicines. The site includes resources on animal care and careers in veterinary medicine as well as itinerary details for the upcoming tour and a look at the social media chatter around the #AnimalConnections hastag. This special relationship is explored in a new mobile truck exhibition from the Smithsonian. The exhibition, an introduction to the world of veterinary medicine, will then visit select spaces throughout the Chicago Park District July 27 through Aug.
Visitors are offered a variety of ways to learn through informative displays, dynamic videos and interactive experiences. For example, large plastic balls provided to tigers to put their hunting instincts to work and the zebras’ special feeders replicate grazing in the wild. Launching July 19, the site will include resources on animal care and careers in veterinary medicine as well as itinerary details for the tour of Chicago parks. The mission of the association is to improve animal and human health and advance the veterinary medical profession.
Building on a 60-year history as the animal health business of Pfizer, Zoetis discovers, develops, manufactures and markets veterinary vaccines and medicines, complemented by diagnostic products and genetic tests. Historically the bulk of its expenditure was small grants relating to travel and education but following a review last year the trust’s focus has changed. The scheme aims to educate owners, establish links with the veterinary profession, reduce accidental breeding, and help with identification and traceability of horses.
SPANA’s veterinarians work in the field, often in challenging conditions with limited availability of expensive tools or medicines. I am a beginner rider and Red has been trained to level 3 dressage he is to much of a horse for me. Some awards provide direct educational and health benefits to individuals with imperfect sight.
Only 20 percent of legally blind people are totally blind, while the rest have about 10 percent or less of normal vision. But there are threats in their native habitat, everything from disease and pollution to fishing nets and ocean debris. It was released into the ocean south of Marineland after treatment for an intestinal trouble and pneumonia. We have to be creative to find ways to support them to get them safely into water as quickly as possible,” said Brooke Burkalter, a veterinarian at the hospital. Slow warming for hypothermia, IV fluids, dextrose, and medications to help stimulate intestinal motility,” Burkhalter said. They are placed in fresh water which helps rehydrate them and kills any epibota or parasites living on or in the turtles.
As a doctor, you always want to practice state of the art medicine, but that’s not always realistic under these circumstances,” said Burkhalter. The exhibition is made possible through the support of Zoetis, Inc., a company that discovers, develops and manufacturers veterinary vaccines and medicines. In the home section, visitors will learn how to select the right pet and the possible dangers to pets, such as household items like plans and holiday decorations and giving them food prepared for family members. Videos will showcase that even suburban areas have a great diversity of wildlife—from the squirrels trying to break into a birdfeeder to a bear lounging in a hammock.
Initiatives include:Humane Outreach-Animal Welfare, Education and Public Awareness, Research Support, Student Enhancement, and Support of American Veterinary Medical Association and its Initiatives.
BEVA members expressed a desire for the trust to focus on voluntary veterinary participation in charitable welfare projects. Then veterinarians gelded 28 colts and stallions and microchipped and issued passports for a total of 45 horses over the course of the day. The BHS estimates that, by holding 12 successful castration clinics, they could prevent the birth of thousands of foals over the next two generations.

Other awards provide indirect benefits to eyeglass wearers, such as through scholarship competitions for prospective eye care specialists and grants for research. As an example, blind individuals with only central vision can still read ordinary print books.
The trust works with selected nonprofit organization grantees that provide health care services to the uninsured or underserved, support services for children with disabilities and services for public schools that include programs for children with disabilities.
As of 2010, seniors who were 55 years of age or older received grants valued at $300 for eyeglasses and prescriptions. These clinics bring primary vision care to those who cannot afford or have no access to such care.
All can injure or kill marine sea turtles, which are listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Whitney Lab is trying to determine whether certain medicines or chemotherapy would be more effective. Family-friendly activities, including demonstrations and veterinarian talks will be offered every afternoon from 1 p.m.
The two pilot projects were very well subscribed with more than 40 veterinarians volunteering their services for the limited places available. In addition, working with horse owners to passport and microchip their horses will increase the number of horses being correctly identified. For example, All Kids Can is a CVS Caremark program to assist children with disabilities, including sensory disabilities such as the loss or partial loss of vision. Applicants must provide proof of age and income to receive this grant and other benefits available to members of this organization. The OneSight Research Foundation’s See the Cure program supports vision research that focuses on diabetic eye diseases. The aim was to promote awareness among future eyecare professionals of the changing, culturally- and ethnically-diverse profile of patients in the United States, and how to serve their eye care needs. A virtual clinic at the center of the exhibition provides visitors the opportunity to be the veterinarian. Not only will this help to protect the food chain but it will also improve the traceability of fly-grazed and abandoned horses.
As of 2011, the $12,000 Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship sponsored by the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults (AAF) led the awards.
The program offers funding to organizations that provide medical rehabilitation and related services for children with such disabilities. According to Transitional Optical, the results showed that student scholarship winners and entrants had a clear vision of their future eye care patients and how to serve their needs. Through touch screens, they can examine and diagnose what ails their virtual patients—a dog, a piglet and a cheetah. Additionally, the Kenneth Jernigan Convention Scholarship Fund provides assistance to individuals to attend the annual NFB national convention for the scholarship presentation.
