Winter is bearing down on most of us… at least it is here in the midwest portion of the United States, and it won’t be long before we start witnessing and hearing of vehicles and their passengers falling prey to hazardous road conditions. But roadside emergency preparedness is special in that it goes far beyond your basic bug out bag needed for survival. It was evening time and I’d just driven home from working downtown in one of the worst snowstorms in recent memory.
Perfect for those instances when you’re out and about and you or someone you happen upon needs some roadside assistance.
They’re certainly better than nothing at all… but like a bug out bag, nothing beats a custom-built kit, personalized for your specific needs.
As always, we appreciate you taking a minute of your time to spread the word about emergency preparedness.
With double the nutritional provision of the 1 Person 3 Day Kit, blankets and lightsticks for two, and even more comprehensive first aid, the 2 Person kit is the premier kit for small household survival.
The link accesses lots of FREE resources including useful templates and information about many different scenarios to help you plan and be better prepared for flooding, storms, fire etc.
However, we also offeryou the option to build your very own 72 hour kitNOTE - Below is a list of 72 hour kit essentials. Therefore, start with thebasics and set aside at least enough water to last 72 hours, and thenplan for more using 55 Gallon Water Barrel Package.Emergency Water Your emergency water supplies need to be potable aswell as portable. If youve built your 72 hour kit in a large, expedition backpack then considerpurchasing -0 zero degree sleeping bags (always plan for the worst). Depending on the type of disaster youre facing, youll want to stay in contact with theoutside world and change your survival tactics based both on newsreports and upcoming weather. I’d just finished thawing out and was sitting down to dinner with my wife when I got a call. Fortunately I was able to come to his rescue that night, and I’m sure many of you have similar stories you could share as well.
EU regulations mean we have to point this out, hence the annoying message, which will only appear on this first visit. If you want to know even more and are interested in resilience then check out our evidence-based resilience blog. One way of reducing the amount of water you carry in your Go Bag is to pack water purification tablets - these  can be used to treat almost any water, making it suitable to drink. Please understandthat you dont need all of this; pick and choose what best suits yourindividual needs, circumstances and financial means. Keep in mind that you may have to be on the moveand lugging a gallon jug of water will be a pain.
If you do take a battery-poweredflashlight, separately a tape both ends of each battery and then, placethem backwards in the flashlight so they wont accidently run downbefore you need them. But… if he’d had a few of these items listed below, that night could have turned out quite differently for him – and me. To make things easy we will assume that you're happy to receive cookies but you can change settings any time by using the Change cookie settings link in the Special menu. If you don't wish to use chemicals to disinfect your water, you can choose a purification or filtration bottle. He sees the coming storm, knows the forces operating to produce it, and calls aloud through His prophets, advises, counsels, exhorts, evencommands-that we prepare for what is about to befall and take shelterwhile yet there is time.

You shouldnt be duped into supposingthat simple because you bought or built a personal 72 hour kit that youhappen to be done. However, consider each item in this LDS-focused 72 hour kit checklist againstthe specific types of disaster situations you will most likely face withinyour area. Finally, understand that your LDS 72 hour kit needs to be made up ofseveral more compact crisis-specific survival kit sections.
You can fill from any water source and the filter will stop the bacteria, viruses, fungi and other water-borne pathogens. An individual might go a few weekswithout any food on the other hand, most people cant last more than3 days and nights without having drinking water.Dont Plan On The Calvary Showing UpThink back on what happened after Hurricane Katrina. Long sleeves keep you from becoming sunburned andwill keep you warm in cold temperatures.Make sure your rain suits or ponchos are 2 times larger than youdnormally wear. Youremergency plans need to made with the single fact that the Calvarymay never come and youre going to be completely on your own. This single factor is why having good drinking water must absolutelybecome the most important factor of one’s personalized emergencystrategy. Disposable respirator masks can be worn over the mouth and nose to filter dust, particles and aqueous mists. Fold flat type of masks are compact and easy to carry and therefore ideal for emergency purposes.
FFP3 masks are the equivalent of N99 and FFP2 are the equivalent of N95, 99% and 95% nominal filtration efficiency respectively. Typically, FFP3 respirator masks are used by healthcare workers to protect themselves when exposed to airborne viruses. Select an emergency torch that uses LEDs as these will last for thousands of hours, negating the need for spare bulbs. First, choose a wind-up type torch with a built-in dynamo that charges its internal batteries so that you never run out of power. Like your torches, emergency radio are available with built in generators for wind-up power so they can be used anytime. Remember that mains electricity may not be available and that you may not be able to access the internet. An emergency foil poncho is an excellent choice as it is extremely light and compact yet it will keep you warm and dry even while moving about.
Also include basic medications and enough personal prescription items to last you one week. If you want to communicate with friends and family that are within a few kilometers of you, licence-free walkie-talkie radios are an excellent choice as they operate independently of any networks.
A satellite phone doesn't depend on the local networks so it may be your only reliable means of voice and email communications for  longer distances. Choose long life lithium batteries, as they are light weight and can be used in extreme environmental conditions. A good quality multi-tool, waterproof tape, a loud whistle and a personal flashing beacon for rescue are also highly recommended as additions to our Go Bag. Packing self-adhesive labels or waterproof notepaper and tape along with a pencil will allow you to leave notes and instructions for others to follow. The bag doesn't need to be waterproof, however, if you wish to protect your gear, you can line your backpack with a light- weight dry sack. You can make your bag easier to find in the dark by sticking photo-luminescent (glow in the dark) tape or attaching a photoluminescent and reflective safety armband to the handle.
