The Battle on Edd War (??????????, Eddo Wo no Kaisen?, literally meaning "Sea Battle of Edd War")[1] was a clash within the seas known as the Edd War between the Roger Pirates and the Golden Lion Pirates twenty-seven years before the current storyline, and three years before Gol D. Roger and his crew went against Shiki's armada, with Shiki offering to join forces with Roger, as Roger found an Ancient Weapon via reading the Poneglyphs, and with their partnership, they could rule the entire world.
On the sidelines, Fleet Admiral Kong had received a report about this battle, and sent Admiral Sengoku and Vice Admiral Monkey D. Shanks always wears a long black cape over his shoulders and, prior to giving it to Luffy, wore a straw hat obtained from his captain that he had worn for many years beforehand and which was synonymous with his image. In all his appearances so far as captain of his own crew, Shanks has worn a white shirt which is only half buttoned, leaving part of his chest exposed. The most striking thing about Shanks is the color of his red hair, from which his epithet 'Red-Haired Shanks' is derived. Shanks is an extremely laid-back man, preferring to take his time as he and his crew travels around the world rather than rushing from one place to another.[18] Shanks is not cruel like many other pirate captains, nor does he rule over his crewmembers with fear to gain respect.
Shanks also has skills in diplomacy, as shown when he brokered a ceasefire between the Whitebeard Pirates and the World Government. Despite being calm and brave most of the time, Shanks sometimes reacts in ways that are not always fitting in what others expect from him, a trait noted by Buggy as having "always annoyed him". Like other characters in One Piece, Shanks has his own unique laugh, starting it with a "Da" (i.e. While only a few of Shanks's crew have been named (Yasopp, Lucky Roo, Benn Beckman, and Rockstar), he seems to generally get along with them all, and they look up to him with respect as their captain. Of the Roger Pirates, most relationships between Shanks and the other crewmates remain unknown.
Luffy looks up to Shanks as his role model, childhood hero and the man he wants to eventually surpass. Later, as Shanks and his crew were leaving after Luffy stood up for him in front of Higuma and his men, Luffy declared he would become better than him, causing Shanks to begin to treat him seriously. Shanks was on relatively good terms with Ace, who seemed to greatly respect him primarily for his role in saving his adoptive younger brother, Luffy, from the Sea King during the incident with Higuma.[47] After setting out to begin his life of piracy, Ace immediately sought out Shanks to meet the man in person and thank him on Luffy's behalf. It is unknown if Shanks ever found out that Ace was the son of his captain, Roger, before Sengoku made this fact public to the world. At some point in the past, Shanks met the two rulers of the Mink Tribe and they became well acquainted.[57] Later on, Nekomamushi states he knows Shanks and that he along with Inuarashi met Shanks while sailing on Roger's ship when they were retainers for Kozuki Oden. The World Government views Shanks as a problem and a trouble maker, but realizes he is a man who will not try to change the world by himself. Shanks and Sengoku hold some level of respect for each other; even as enemies, both the World Government and Red Hair Pirates see a clash between sides as the final option.
Buggy the Star Clown is the captain of the Buggy Pirates as well as the co-leader of the Buggy and Alvida Alliance,[2] and a former apprentice of the Roger Pirates. He is the main antagonist of the Orange Town Arc and can be considered the secondary antagonist of the Loguetown Arc.
Buggy is a slim, yet muscular blue-haired man with an appearance resembling that of a clown, as to mirror his epithet.
In his pirate captain attire, he dons a striped white and red shirt with short sleeves, white gloves reminiscent of the ones worn by clowns, a sash around his waist like many other pirates, and a pair of loose pants reaching to his calves, just above a pair of striped socks and pointy shoes.
During the Whitebeard War Saga, after escaping from Impel Down, Buggy modified his striped prisoner's outfit with salvaged Marine uniform pieces to recreate the effects of a pirate captain: a coat and a tricorn that had the symbols crossed out. It was revealed in an SBS question that the blue tassels coming from the sides of Buggy's hat are his actual hair in the shape of two ponytails. His big red nose is something he is very touchy about, going so far as to destroy an entire town when a couple of kids made fun of his nose.[10] Occasionally, he will mishear what others say as an insult about him or his nose, possibly due to paranoia. He has a number of running gags in the series, including a delayed reaction towards things, he will at first act casually then when it sinks in he will act completely the opposite (for example, when Ace appeared on his ship, Buggy first greets him politely. Furthermore, through his crazy streaks of good fortune, coupled with weaselly actions and lying, he has managed to gain power and favor with people by doing next to nothing. These kinds of misunderstandings caused a large number of Impel Down escapees to join his crew (though Buggy did not intend to impress them during his jailbreak and only continued out of fear the prisoners, who were much more vicious and infamous than he was, would turn on him if he appeared weak) and Buggy to be selected to become a Shichibukai by the World Government just because he looked reputable from their point of view, though Galdino is well aware of Buggy's true nature of cowardice and ineptitude. Buggy is one of the few villains to become reformed after facing Luffy, though only slightly. Silvers Rayleigh,[2] also known as the "Dark King",[4] is the former first mate of the Roger Pirates,[3] known as the "Right Hand of the Pirate King".[2] He became a coating mechanic in Sabaody Archipelago at some point after Roger died and the crew was disbanded. Two of Rayleigh's most distinguishing traits are his round glasses and facial hair, which is arranged embattled across his lower jaw . The Dark King chooses to dress quite simply, usually just in a nearly plain t-shirt, shorts, and sandals. When he was younger, Rayleigh had strawberry blonde hair (black when first seen in the anime) clean cut, and had a moderate amount of facial hair. During his first appearance in Buggy's flashback, he was seen wearing a t-shirt with an ornately decorated collar, a motif that appeared even in the long coat he wore during the Edd War.
After the two year timeskip he now wears a black T-shirt as well as his silver hooded cloak. Though he often has a serious air, Rayleigh enjoys going with the flow and appearing in unexpected places and in unexpected ways, especially given his status and age. Rayleigh is not often headstrong, looking before he leaps and taking time to plan ahead before taking action, although he does not hesitate to act if needs be.
He, like Whitebeard, seem to enjoy talking about the past and its great times, as well as the good old days of their near bygone era. As stated by Shakky, he loves alcohol and women, which he proved when he is first introduced saving Keimi from being mistreated by Disco while holding a hip flask. Rayleigh had an incredibly close relationship with Roger, to the point where he was called 'partner' by the Pirate King. Though Buggy was often punished by Silvers Rayleigh, he still has much respect for the former first mate of the crew. He seems to appreciate Crocus for maintaining the Pirate King's health during their voyage in the New World. Hatchan is well acquainted with Silvers Rayleigh, after saving the pirate from a shipwreck as a child. Ever since Rayleigh had heard about Luffy from Shanks, he had wanted to meet him face to face. After the 2 year timeskip, it is apparent that both of them became close from their training together. Due to her hellish experience with the first man she ever saw, the one who painfully burned the Hoof of the Soaring Dragon onto her back, Hancock has a bitter hatred towards all men. In the past Rayleigh along with the other Roger Pirates encountered several Marines, especially Monkey D.
Despite the brief meeting between the two it appears they have a neutral relationship with each other. Another glimpse of his strength is seen when he seemingly snatches off Keimi's exploding slave collar and tosses it into the air before it could self destruct. He has also shown to be very fast when he was able to intercept Kizaru's attack when the Admiral was about to kill Roronoa Zoro.
Rayleigh is well-documented for his cunning: he has managed to evade the grasp of the expansive World Government for over 20 years now, and had quickly learned to exploit the slave-trading business on Sabaody Archipelago for personal gain (getting himself caught and sold to a wealthy bidder, before escaping and robbing his "master").
Another noticeable trait of Rayleigh's is his incredible perceptive and deduction capability.
Rayleigh is also an expert in the coating business, with his current line of profit performing such operations for various pirate ships heading down to Fishman Island, as well as understanding the mechanics of the deep-sea currents. He is also an accomplished swordsman, though has admitted to having degraded in skill somewhat from his younger and healthier days.

Rayleigh reports that it has been quite a while since he has had to use his own blade, though this was just moments before going toe-to-toe with Admiral Kizaru, so his skills do not seem to have dulled in any way. Rayleigh has mastered Haoshoku Haki to the extent that he can render a specific target completely unconscious. Busoshoku Haki allows Rayleigh to create a force similar to an invisible armor around himself. The Golden Lion Pirates (??????, Kinjishi Kaizokudan) is apirate crew led by Shiki the Golden Lion. Twenty-three years prior the story's beginning, the Golden Lion Pirates were the biggest pirate fleet in the seas.
Three years after the war, after Shiki was imprisoned in Impel Down for attacking Navyford, the Golden Lion Pirates kept a low profile, until their captain escaped. Twenty years since Indigo started creating the monstrous army, one of them, Boss, escaped, and as such, Shiki made an offer with the captain of the Amigo Pirates: if Largo can recapture Boss, he would be invited to become the commander of the Golden Lion Pirates' 51st division. Continuing with his plans, Shiki continued to recruit powerful allies to accompany him in world domination, as well as to destroy East Blue, due to Shiki bearing a grudge to the sea for being Roger's death place.
Twenty-seven years ago, Gaban was present with the rest of the Roger Pirates in the sea known as Edd War, where they were confronted by Shiki, the captain of the Golden Lion Pirates. It is unknown whether or not he attended his captain's execution at Loguetown, but a year before their captain's death the entire crew disbanded and went their own separate ways.
The name "Scopper" may be a reference to copper, continuing the metal naming theme among the senior members of the Roger Pirates (Gold Roger, Silvers Rayleigh, Scopper Gaban). Garp to handle it, though they did not make it in time, as the battle had already ended because of the storm.
He initially wore slightly loose brown trousers cut below the knee and collected halfway up the shin, with golden buttons down the outer leg.[5] Recently he has been seen wearing a similar pair, but looser and with floral patterns on them. These include panicking when things go wrong[31] or shrugging off Buggy's angry disposition towards him to greet him in a friendly manner.[32] He also seems to carry something personal regarding Marshall D. Their battles were said to echo through the whole Grand Line.[54] However, Mihawk has given up on trying to fight Shanks after he lost an arm. However, due to the position he holds, they fear he could get out of hand and are prepared to eliminate him if he ever does.
First, a green star appears in the middle of the forehead, two half circles appear beneath the eyes, and there is a straight line on the middle of his chin.[8][9] After that (when his crew meets Ace), he has two green dots on both sides of his head and four big green dots on the rim of his hat, which still has the jolly roger on it.
Roger's ship, he looked mostly the same; the only notable differences were his shorter hair and smaller stature.
Although he is not "stupid" in the traditional sense, he is prone to gross misjudgments that cost him; usually this is due to his overconfidence. Oftentimes, happenstance makes him look more impressive and intimidating than he really is; Buggy won't even intend to look good and have impressed people unintentionally or by total accident, or pass himself off as a substantial figure by being dishonest or stealing the credit for a masterful feat from someone else. After the timeskip, he has even stooped to making himself look bigger and more intimidating as a Shichibukai by splitting up his body underneath a cloak and growing out his hair. He also begins to accept people's kindness, though he can still be cruel to anyone who is not a member of his crew or is aiding him in his goals. When out in public, he also seems to enjoy the cover of a large silver hooded cloak, though the hood is often down.
In the past, he was shown to have been impatient with the antics of the younger crew members, and took the position of crew disciplinarian very seriously. He often comments on his age and how his body "does not work the way it used to", much like Garp. Even when entering into an unfortunate or unplanned situation such as engaging a Marine admiral in combat or having his ship sink in the Sea King infested waters of the Grand Line, Rayleigh remains completely calm, pushing forward through adversity with no hesitation. After the man gave himself to the Marines, Rayleigh was unable to bring himself to directly witness the execution of his closest friend.
Some years ago, after Shanks saved Luffy from being eaten by the sea king, Shanks met Rayleigh in Sabaody Archipelago. Despite the doctor's brief time with them he considers him a valued crewmate and expressed a desire to see him again.
He had gone missing for the previous six months before her introduction; however, she was not worried because she knew what Rayleigh is capable of. When Luffy found him on the Sabaody Archipelago, he was excited about hearing stories about Gol D. As he headed towards Thousand Sunny, Luffy shouted to Rayleigh that he would become the Pirate King, leaving Rayleigh with a smile and tears in his eyes. Rayleigh, who helped Hancock and her sisters return to Amazon Lily after escaping, is one of the only two known exceptions to this hatred (the other being Luffy). Rayleigh is one of the few (if not only) people who refer to her with her birth name, Gloriosa. Nevertheless, as with his captain, Rayleigh has great respect for Edward Newgate, and even shed a tear for the man's death at the pinnacle of the Battle of Marineford.
Shakky vouches for his strength by saying that he is "100 times stronger than all of you boys", referring to the Eleven Supernovas.[11] Furthermore, when Vice Admiral Garp was informed Rayleigh may be on Sabaody Archipelago, he told his men not to confront him nor should Fleet Admiral Sengoku be informed. However, Rayleigh himself has admitted that he is not as young as he used to be, and can tire in battle.[12] This may mean when he was in the prime of his strength he may have been even stronger than when he matched Kizaru, a true testament to his strength. He also has a large amount of stamina, as he was able to swim to Amazon Lily from another ocean, and was also still able to kill a number of Sea Kings despite swimming such a long distance.
Calm and level-headed at virtually all times, he was the individual to break up arguments and disputes aboard the "Oro Jackson", as first mate and the right-hand man to Gol D.
This is shown when he was (within a matter of moments) easily able to deduce what had happened after ending up at the slave auction stage on the Sabaody Archipelago. He is able to use all 3 types of Haki: Kenbunshoku Haki, Busoshoku Haki, and Haoshoku Haki. Rayleigh has the ability to bypass the powers of a Devil Fruit user, touching the "substantial body" beneath whatever protection the fruit provides as seen when he used Busoshoku Haki to kick and redirect an attack from Admiral Kizaru. When he came across Nami, he noted on her exceptional navigational skills and beauty, he forced her to become a member of his crew by holding her comrades as hostage.
He wears a large blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves and is always seen wearing a pair of round, black sunglasses.

Shiki demanded to form an alliance with the Roger Pirates in hopes of taking over the world and if they did not agree, Shiki would destroy them with his armada.
As the two crews clashed, it seemed inevitable that the Roger Pirates would lose due to Shiki's heavy fleet, but as fate would have it, a storm suddenly hit the seas that the two were fighting in, and half of the Golden Pirates' fleet was sunk.
Shanks even offered to help clean up the mess Higuma made,[44] and Makino helped clean off Shanks after Higuma left.[45] She was very grateful toward Shanks for saving Luffy at the cost of his left arm and holds him in high regard, knowing that, despite being a pirate, he is a good person.
He retains a neutral, though somewhat friendly relationship with Shanks, and is able to track him down if the need arises.
He also has green eyeliner and green lipstick, with a curvy line going down both sides of his face. He wore a different outfit in each flashback but dressed similarly to how he does now, usually seen in striped T-shirts (or collared shirts), white gloves, baggy pants, pointed shoes, and donning a sash.
He wears a big red and white, stripped tricorn with a rim ornated with several golden little balls and his crew's Jolly Roger on the front. In the original Japanese version of One Piece, he inserts "hade ni" (???, hade ni?, literally meaning "flashy"), into almost every sentence he speaks ("Flashily die! Sometimes he will even do the opposite of this and overact the part then become calm having thought the situation through more deeply after the initial reaction. Though he once tried to keep it a secret so he wouldn't become a target for rival pirates and the Marines, he also started playing up the fact he was originally one of the legendary Roger Pirates (despite being just an apprentice) once the truth was out. He also is fun loving and displays a huge fondness for parties, admiring those who are equally fun loving (strangely, he shares this trait with Shanks).
However, he has changed his personality in his older years, becoming much more relaxed even when training Luffy. Despite once being enemies with the Whitebeard Pirates, Rayleigh seems to have great respect for their captain, like Roger, and shed a tear for Whitebeard's passing.
He told him about a boy he met in East Blue, and after their conversation, Rayleigh was curious to meet Luffy. Upon meeting Luffy, she informed him of the other major pirates (the Eleven Supernovas) that have arrived on the island around the same time as him. He found Luffy at Amazon Lily and, along with Jinbe, the three invaded Marineford so that Luffy could ring the Ox Bell. He took part in stealing a marine ship, circling around Marineford, and the ringing of the Ox Bell.
While her sisters were shocked to see Silvers Rayleigh on Amazon Lily, Hancock remained single-minded about Luffy, only realizing later that Rayleigh was there.
Before her return to Amazon Lily, Gloriosa lived with Rayleigh and Shakky on Sabaody Archipelago while sheltering the Gorgon Sisters after their escape from the World Nobles.
The fact that he was a member of one of the strongest pirate crew made him a formidable enemy of the Marines. The Surgeon of Death appears to have deduced Rayleigh's motive to find Luffy on Amazon Lily. Garp reasoned that the Marines should not confront two legends, Whitebeard and Rayleigh at the same time. Jinbe, a former Shichibukai who was used to seeing Whitebeard, was later shocked to see Rayleigh in person. His ability to swim also definitively shows that his strength is natural, not based on a Devil Fruit.
Rayleigh also shows great knowledge of Haki, and made use of all three types while teaching Luffy about them, and training him in the basics. He disabled an entire hall room of hostiles with this power, save for the Kid Pirates and Heart Pirates.
Roger in the New World, wishing to ask him to join the Golden Lion due to finding an Ancient Weapon, hoping to rule the world together, Roger refused, leading to the Battle in Edd War.
Eventually, the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates attacked Shiki to retrieve Nami and to stop the Golden Lion Pirates from attacking East Blue.
While this event occurred, Gaban tried his best to calm down Buggy, who was hoping to surrender to Shiki, but in the end Roger refused the alliance thus resulting in an epic battle where the entire crew, including Gaban fought it out. Shiki himself got a steering wheel stuck deep in his head accidentally from the battle, with no chance of removing it without killing Shiki. His nose has become more defined, similar to how Nico Robin's nose is heavily defined compared to those of most other characters in the series. In the Impel Down saga, he has crossbones again going down his forehead to below his eyes, two pink lines pointing up, and red lipstick. On his head he has an orange hat with his jolly roger on it, over a bandanna with the same pattern of his shirt.
He also has what some might consider "dumb luck"; no matter what happens to him he is lucky enough to survive somehow (including being struck by lightning at Loguetown, being chased by Smoker, being frozen alive by Admiral Aokiji, or inadvertently slashed by Dracule Mihawk). He takes great joy in riding on the beliefs of others and took a great advantage of the cheering crowds of prisoners from Impel Down upon his escape, who were impressed with his history on Roger's crew, as well as his connections with Shanks. He was willing to divulge the whole truth to Nico Robin if she wished, but she declined his offer. He later became the first mate of the Oro Jackson, the ship of the man who would conquer the Grand Line and be crowned by the world as the Pirate King. He taught Luffy how to properly use Haki over the course of a year and a half, then assisted in his escape from the Sabaody Archipelago. The more they talked, the more amused Rayleigh felt as he compared Luffy's demeanor to his old captain. When Luffy set sail, Rayleigh compared his late captain to Luffy, claiming that destiny is slowly but surely taking shape, and that Luffy has become a man well fit to wear that Straw Hat. When Rayleigh fought Kizaru, he told him that if he were to get rid of his wanted poster, he could go into a peaceful retirement. Amongst these duties was disciplining the young apprentices Buggy and Shanks over their constant arguing about pointless things, such as which of the two polar regions is the colder one.
Though the Golden Lion Pirates were gaining the upper hand, a storm suddenly struck, wiping out half of Shiki's fleet, and allowing the Roger Pirates to escape. Shiki, not knowing that Luffy was the one who defeated Largo, merely stated that this one setback would not upset his ultimate plan. Chopper and Robin went to destroy Indigo's laboratory where the SIQ drug was, to prevent anymore mutant animals from being created, while the rest of the crew attacked Shiki's allies and palace.
Luckily, fate was on the Roger Pirates' side as during the battle, a massive storm formed and sunk half of Shiki's armada, resulting in the Roger Pirates' victory. His trademark red hair is also slightly longer, with the fringe pushed more toward the sides. While in the manga his scarf and sash are orange just like many other components of his attire, his pants are light-brown and the epaulets of his coat are simply gold, in the anime he was given a much more bright color scheme, with a purple scarf, green sash, light-green pants, and green epaulets. Strangly enough he breeds extreme loyalty in his his crew as the Impel Down prisoners all joined his crew and are all completely loyal to him increasing his strength to that of the other warlords. After the Straw Hat Pirates returned from the Human Auctioning House, where they found Rayleigh, he and the entire Straw Hat crew gathered at Shakky's bar. Later, after parting ways with Jinbe, Hancock took Luffy and Rayleigh to Rusukaina Island for Luffy's special training. Eventually, Nami tricked Shiki into guiding Merveille, now converted into a floating island fortress with Shiki's levitating powers, into a lightning storm, and with that, Luffy crashed a lightning-enhanced giant leg down onto Shiki and the floating island, defeating the Flying Pirate and sending the mutants plummeting into the sea. 1 • Miss DoubleFinger • Hina • Bellamy • Don Quichotte Doflamingo • Foxy • Blueno • Kalifa • Very Good • Shuu • Sharinguru • Brook • Gecko Moria • Perona • Absalom • Bartholomew Kuma • Jewelry Bonney • Eustass Kid • Trafalgar D.
