Fresh crabs are ample during the summer, giving you the tasty opportunity to cook them whole instead of hiding their delicious meat in crab cakes.
Before you dig in to the following crab recipes, follow these tips to get the most from your crab eating experience.
Maryland blue crabs are one of the most popular types of crabs available live during the summer. Live crabs can pinch, so be sure to wear a pair of heavy duty gloves while preparing them for dinner. Rip the top of the shell off and remove the triangular part of the abdomen on the bottom of the crab. The list is endless, but these are some of the ways I use mantras to help frame my thoughts and manage my emotions.
Now, using mantras does not automatically guarantee that you are going to feel better or miraculously pull a one-eighty. Whenever you feel that your negative thoughts are returning, just gently inhale and recite your mantra.
Sometimes it is helpful to recite your mantra as you inhale, and then recite a word or phrase for whatever thought or emotion you are trying to release as you exhale. You can buy crabs in a bushel which, depending on their size, will be between 60 and 96 crabs. Two traditional ways are sautéing crabs in garlic and oil or cooking crabs in a large pot of tomato sauce and serving them with spaghetti.
In traditional Hinduism and Buddhism, mantras are spoken in Sanskrit and are considered very sacred. Though they are historically used as mechanisms for meditation and spiritual enlightenment, mantras are also practical tools that help us manage our thoughts and emotions throughout our daily lives.


The goal is to take a minute or two away from the situation that is bothering you and perform a mini-meditation. This makes a nice cold pasta salad for a hot summer day barbecue, but can also be served hot if you’re looking for something a little more comforting. Resembling a mini bowling ball with a handle, kettlebells are great for cardio, strength, and flexibility training. Grab the handle with both hands, keeping the palms face down and arms in front of the body.
Swing the kettlebell up with one arm, but still swing the other arm to help drive momentum.
Then try this: Start with legs a bit wider than hip-width distance apart, and lower yourself into a quarter-squat position. Stand up straight, holding the kettlebell in front of the chest with both hands, keeping the elbows close to the body. Place the kettlebell on the ground between both legs and begin to squat while keeping the core engaged, and grip the kettlebell handle with one hand. Stand up straight while holding the kettlebell in front of the chest with two hands, arms bent and palms facing each other. Raise the kettlebell overhead, lock the arm, and keep your eyes on the weight (which will help keep the shoulders aligned!).

If you can't use crabs immediately, store them in a cooler with ice at the bottom and put the cooler in a cool place. Pick one that helps you relax, one that builds confidence, and definitely one that helps you control your anger. They really help reorient our minds so that we can think more clearly, more logically, and more compassionately. This mini-meditation will help restructure your thoughts so that you can perceive the situation more clearly, make better decisions, and feel better during the process.
Start by picking up the weight of your choice—women usually grab between eight and 16 kg weights, while men go for 16 to 32 kg, though these weights vary depending on the exercises of choice. Maintain a slight bend to the knee and drive the hips back, lowering the body—but not too low (this isn’t a squat!). Alternate hands when the kettlebell is behind the legs; aim for 10 to 12 reps with each arm. Next, bend over to grab both kettlebells and pull them towards the stomach, keeping the elbows close to the body and  the back straight.


Start squatting by driving the heels into the ground and pushing the hips back until the thighs are parallel to the ground or just below.
Then, using force from the hips, push through the heels to rise to standing, pulling the kettlebell upwards while the elbow drives up. Shift your weight onto the right leg and begin bending forward at the waist.Keep the right arm extended overhead as the body bends forward and the left arm is pointed toward the ground.
Make sure all of the crabs are a live in the bushel, if some are dead, throw them away before cooking. Keep the crabs from laying directly on the ice because the ice will melt and the crabs may use up all of the water and die.
Regardless of the cooking method you choose, keep the flavors simple in order to taste the freshness of the crab meat. Repeat these mantras in your head, aloud during your commute, or in a mirror as you get ready for work. Clear, logical, and compassionate thinking helps us make better decisions, feel happier and more peaceful, and enjoy our relationships. There are no rules, so just pick a few words or phrases that really speak to you and effectively perk you up. So, please feel free to share your mantras or any other technique you use to manage your thoughts and emotions. Then, in a fluid motion, explosively drive the hips forward while swinging the kettlebell, keeping the glutes and core engaged. Next, pass the kettlebell to the right hand and swing it around the outside of the right leg. Return to standing, and repeat for 15-20 reps (or more!) Just remember: quality over quantity! Here’s the fun part: Rotate the torso from left to right by twisting at the waist and swinging the kettlebell across the body.
Also, keep the lid cracked to allow fresh air in, just make sure the crabs can't climb out.
Remember: The motion should come from the hips, not the arms, as the body returns to standing. Lower the weight back down between the legs and keep this swinging motion going for 12 to 15 reps. Keeping the core engaged the whole time, move the weight back down by the ground and repeat for 12-15 reps. When you find yourself in a situation where you feel timid and insecure, give your confidence matra a few passes, then dive into situation.
And when you notice that your blood is starting to boil, before you speak or act in rage, use your anger mantra to calm your thoughts and reorient yourself.
