Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition among men, where they are unable to get and maintain an erection.
The condition can contribute to relationship problems, erode self-confidence and cause untold stress.
In an analysis of posts and comments from internet forums focused on ED, researchers were surprised to discover a large number of younger men opening up about the problem. Forum participants opened up about deeply personal issues including reliance on porn, mental health and injuries to the penis. Superdrug Online Doctor's research team analysed 7,835 comments and posts on a prominent ED forum, which had been posted over a period of eight years. Researchers also discovered men were talking a lot about their reliance on internet porn and medications such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. The semantic analysis looked at words which were commonly located near the word "penis" and found that many of them highlighted health problems and injuries to the penis. The most common mentions were of words like "problem" and "problems", followed by "curved", "injury" and "curvature". This, researchers believe, indicates that forum users could've also been discussing "curvature of the penis" or Peyronie’s disease, which can be caused by injuries during sex. Other disconcerting mentions included terms such as "numb", "damage", "broken", "snapped," and "sound" – indicating that penis injuries might be more common than expected.
According to health experts, men are more likely to sustain such injuries if they have priapism or prolonged erections caused by taking Viagra. Another common theme was the link between mental health issues such as performance anxiety and watching porn. One man wrote on the forum: "I have been viewing internet pornography frequently (4 to 5 times a week) for the past 6 years. Researchers found that the most common phrase after "erectile dysfunction" was "internet porn", "performance anxiety" and "watching porn". The forum also highlighted that many people discussing ED also discussed mental health issues such as "depression" and "stress".

Men looking for a natural treatment for erectile dysfunction may find it in the produce department at the local grocery store.
In a related Inquisitr report, coffee may be another natural treatment for erectile dysfunction. In a report published on Friday, researchers with the University of East Anglia (UEA) and Harvard University revealed a diet high in flavonoid-rich fruits is the best natural treatment for the male health complaint.
According to the study, the rate of erectile dysfunction was lowest among men who included fruits containing flavanones and flavones in their diets. This was the first male sexual health study that analyzed the association between male impotence and flavonoids. The study analyzed data collected from more than 25,000 healthy men who reported their diet and lifestyle patterns every four years over a ten year period.
After adjusting for factors like body weight and caffeine intake, researchers found the risk of erectile dysfunction dropped as much as 14 percent when the men ate more fruit. While there is no hard evidence that flavonoids are the sole factor that reduced the risk of ED, it makes sense to consume more of them.
While most men turn to drugs like Viagra, a study like this suggests that a natural treatment for erectile dysfunction may be a lifestyle and diet change. Sexual dysfunction in men (also called as erectile dysfunction) is a condition that is characterized by the inability of an individual to either get an erection at all or hold an erection properly (long enough) during sexual intercourse.
The condition is usually prevalent in aged individuals although it is not completely restricted to age alone. Many individuals tend to ignore the initial symptoms of sexual dysfunction as trivial disorders that would disappear on their own. Sexual dysfunction in men can be caused by a variety of physical and psychological reasons. There are several treatment options available for erectile dysfunction. These include physical treatment options from pills, pumps and surgeries etc. Before opting for any form of treatment for erectile dysfunction, the doctor would opt for a few tests to find out the underlying reason for the condition. These include routine physical examinations, psychological tests (that deal with previous sexual experiences and the individual’s state of mind), lab tests (to check for other diseases that could possibly be causing the dysfunction), color phase ultrasonography tests (to measure the flow of blood to the penile organ) and nocturnal penile tumescence tests (also called as erection self tests which check whether the problem stems from physical or psychological sources).
Note: Even though these pills would effectively treat erectile dysfunction in men, they could cause some temporary side effects like nasal blocks, headaches, blurred vision and indigestion etc. Also called as ‘Cock Rings’, constriction rings are small bands that are usually slipped on near the base of the penile organ after getting an erection.
Usually available over the counter at a majority of drug stores, the penile vacuum pumps would help treat erectile dysfunction during sexual intercourse.

In case the oral medications do not seem to have any impact on the condition, the doctor would recommend injections that would be administered either at the side or the base of the penile organ. And while these injections are usually administered by a doctor, with time the individual can learn to administer them himself at home. Of late, more and more individuals are opting for penile implants to treat conditions like erectile dysfunction. Surgery is usually considered as the last resort for individuals who don’t benefit from any or all of the treatment methods mentioned above. Up to 40% of cases of erectile dysfunction (ED) originate from vascular disturbances associated with atherosclerotic disease, leading to the previously proven concomitance between ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and ED. Just 31 of them, or about 6 percent, could name all six of these modifiable risk factors for ED, the researchers report in the International Journal of Impotence Research. Instead of focusing on these risks, many men think that ED is primarily caused by low testosterone, cycling or benign prostate tumors, study co-author Zygmunt Domagala of Wroclaw Medical University in Poland said by email. The men in the study were 62 years old on average and all of them had experienced at least one previous heart attack.
Most of them were overweight, smoked and had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Almost 80 percent of the men experienced ED, with about 23 percent describing the condition as severe or moderate to severe.
Even though sedentary lifestyle was the most common modifiable risk factor for ED among men in the survey, patients were even less aware of this than the other contributors. The most frequently cited risk factor was smoking, correctly identified by 179 of the participants.
Among the patients who could name at least one risk factor, 106 of them could name only one, while 64 cited two and 48 were able to list three.
Having ED didn’t make the men any more likely to identify modifiable risk factors, which may be due to a lack of effective sex education, the authors conclude. One limitation of the study is that only a limited number of patients responded to all the questions, leaving limited data in particular for the severity of erectile dysfunction and the intensity of physical activity, the researchers acknowledge. Even so, the results aren’t surprising, especially given how often patients and physicians alike are uncomfortable having frank discussions about sexual health, said Dr. Simply defined erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to acquire or maintain an erection of sufficient rigidity or duration for sexual intercourse. You see, the penis is like a hydraulic lift.  Blood enters and pools in sponge-like areas of the penis called the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum. Vascular Problems: If the blood vessels that supply blood needed to fill the penis during an erection become blocked or damaged, less blood fills the penis.
Neural Problems: Erections can come directly from the brain just by thinking about a beautiful woman or from touch as a reflex that doesn’t even require the brain. Hormonal Problems: Low testosterone is the most common hormonal cause of erectile dysfunction. There are many other, less common, causes of erectile dysfunction that should be evaluated by your doctor if you are having problems getting or maintaining on erection. Male Sexual Problems and Urinary Problems Introduction Male Sexual Problems and Urinary Problems Introduction Genitourinary (reproductive and urinary) problems increase in prevalence with aging. And for many, it is easier to turn to an internet forum for help rather than their doctor, as they feel more comfortable talking anonymously about their problems. This was a surprising finding for researchers, as erectile dysfunction is generally considered a condition that strikes older men. Scientists have recently concluded that eating a diet rich in fruit can help reduce the risk of male impotence, especially for men under 70-years-old. After studying the habits of 3,700 men, researchers concluded that adding two to three cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of male impotence by almost 42 percent. A specific type of flavonoid called Anthocyanins, found in blueberries, cherries, blackberries, radishes, and black currant, provided the most protection against male impotence. Scientists suspect the flavanones and flavones in the fruit relax the blood vessels that help the penis become erect before and during sex. The participants also made note of any changes to their sexual health and ability to have an erection. Additionally, a 21 percent risk reduction was noticed among men who also routinely exercised.
Eric Rimm, an epidemiology and nutrition professor at Harvard and co-author of the study, suggests that eating a fruit-rich diet can also benefit the heart.
Almost 90 percent of men suffering from erectile dysfunction are at risk for heart disease and hypertension, as well as diabetes. In certain cases, physical or emotional disturbances can cause a young man to get erectile dysfunction as well.
Even though erectile dysfunction is not a cause for immediate concern, it can signify a deeper and more serious underlying health condition that would need immediate treatment. The more common ones include physical conditions like hypertension, atherosclerosis and high cholesterol levels that affect the blood flow to the penile organ during sexual intercourse, physical injuries to the spinal cord and pelvis, conditions like Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis that have an impact on the central nervous system, conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and hypogonadism.

The results of a few or all these tests would help the doctor choose the best form of treatment for the condition. When taken orally, these medications can help increase the blood flow to the penile organ by relaxing the muscles of the organ. It is also considered imperative to not use these medications in conjunction with nitrates (like nitroglycerine) as doing so could lead to harmful side effects like low blood pressure levels, heart palpitation and even heart attacks etc. The rings can be a bit uncomfortable to wear and would need to be removed within 30 minutes of using them.
The process involves using the pump to pump out excess air from the tube (and the penile organ).
The procedure would involve using a tiny needle to inject a drug or suppository directly into the urethra. In certain cases, medications like alpha blocker phenatolamine and vasodilator papaverine etc. However, the doses would need to be carefully measured and adhered to in order to avoid unnecessary side effects. When implanted in the penile organ, they can be manually manipulated to take up a flaccid or erect position. The cylinders are implanted into the individual erection chambers in the penis while the pump is implanted into the scrotum. In this case, the individual would need to undergo a vascular surgery that would aim to restore normal blood flow and function to the penile organ. It can also cause temporary (but bothersome) side effects like infections, bleeding and reactions to pain control medications etc.
This type of heart disease is linked to most cases of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men over 60. Vito Angelo Giagulli, a researcher in endocrinology and metabolic diseases at the University of Bari in Italy who wasn’t involved in the study. Abnormal thyroid hormone levels and high prolactin levels are other possible hormonal causes of erectile dysfunction.
In fact, Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis all work just about equally as well, with Cialis lasting the longest. So far, generally accepted treatments for the disorder include prescription medications or surgery. As such, the condition is said to be serious if the symptoms persist for more than 3 months. The specific option chosen for the treatment would depend on the prognosis and the severity of the condition. An increase in blood flow to the organ would thus stimulate an erection and enable the individual to hold it for longer periods.
The constriction band would then prevent the blood from flowing out rapidly, thereby prolonging the erection for a comparatively longer period.
In certain cases, they can cause pain or numbness in the genital area, following which they need to be removed immediately. The medication would have a direct effect on the penile organ and help treat erectile dysfunction effectively. During sexual intercourse, the pump would feed a saline solution to the cylinders in the erection chambers, thereby inflating them. Read on to understand what erectile dysfunction is, what causes erectile dysfunction, why good diet and exercise improve your sexual function, and what treatments are available.
Anything that prevents blood from getting into or staying in the penis can cause erectile dysfunction.
However, before you go ask your doctor for another medication, try to quit smoking, get some exercise, eat better, and treat your diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, and other medical issues. Common pills that are usually prescribed for this purpose include Levitra, Viagra, Sildenafil and Cialis etc. Following this, the tube is detached from the penile organ and a constriction ring is slipped over the base of the organ to prolong the erection.
Also, psychiatric problems that affect the brain, like depression, can cause erectile dysfunction.
Food and Drug Administration approved the first ED drug in 1998, several case reports on the beneficial effects of nitrates for erectile dysfunction had already been published. If the standard medications for erectile dysfunction aren’t working, there are other treatments available, including direct penile injections and penile implants. The ED drugs used today are based on the relaxing effects of nitrates on the blood vessels that supply the penis.
