While colleges are divided on the best way to achieve diversity, one message is clear – the student demographic changes sweeping the nation already have a big impact on higher education nationwide, especially as the number of Hispanic and Asian students increases.
Initiatives for diversity and inclusion are taking different shapes on campus – from having a clear diversity statement that is communicated across the college to developing a robust mentoring programs designed to retain minority and female faculty.

The results, released today in The Chronicle’s fourth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities. UH joins 84 other four-year institutions and 26 two-year institutions on the annual list, which recognizes the best practices of elite groups of colleges based on enrollment size.
The workplace honor comes on the heels of two other prestigious academic designations bestowed to UH in 2011. According to a recent survey conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education, Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) is one of the best colleges to work for in the nation. The results, released in The Chronicle’s seventh annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 43,000 employees at 278 colleges and universities nationwide. SRJC was the only California community college to earn this distinction, and one of only 12 community colleges nationwide to be named on the Honor Roll. Honor Roll recognition is given only to the top ten schools in each four-year size category and the top four schools in each two-year size category based on the number of times they were honored in the individual recognition areas. Great Colleges to Work For® is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country. To determine the North Bay Business Journal's Best Places to Work award winners, several months were spent gathering nominations and conducting an anonymous employee survey.

The SMART train and pathway project is currently under construction and will provide a new regional transportation backbone with improved transit options for all North Bay residents.
The results, released today in The Chronicle’s third annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 42,000 employees at 277 colleges and universities. The Chronicle is the nation’s most important source of news about colleges and universities.
The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. There are exceptions, but only if the candidate has some personal connection with the firm. When you read the accounts of recruiters at these firms, you get a sense of why they might choose these metrics.

As a result, colleges are searching for ways to diversify their faculty to meet the needs of their diversifying student body.
Bring in two or more diverse faculty members into a single department at the same time, so candidates feel more welcome. Mentoring is a powerful way to engage minority or female professors at the junior level, from the beginning.
Seek out opportunities to reach potential diverse candidates while they’re still in high school or college. In January UH was ranked as a Tier One research university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and in March UH earned the distinction as one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education by The Princeton Review.

This year marks the second consecutive year the College has received the distinction and has been named an honor roll institution. This year, SRJC won honors in the categories of Collaborative Governance, Compensation and Benefits, Confidence in Senior Leadership, Job Satisfaction, Professional Development Programs, Respect and Appreciation, Supervisor or Department Chair Relationship, and Teaching Environment. The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captures demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff.
EKU is joined on the Large Four-Year Institution Honor Roll by George Mason University, Georgia Tech, Hofstra University, University of Michigan, University of Mississippi, Notre Dame, and the University of Southern California, among others.
The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was employee feedback.
Do a comprehensive audit, so you can establish a supportive work environment before a new faculty member arrives. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition is employee feedback. That the gatekeepers at our nation’s most prestigious firms are pathetically shallow, outrageously parochial, and insufferably snobbish.
Do you really want to pore over the transcript of that kid from the University of Michigan? In essence, what they’re assuming is that the admissions offices at the super-elite schools have already picked the best of the best.
