What is conjunctivitis?Conjunctivitis is redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva – the clear membranes covering the whites of the eyes and the inner part of the eyelids. To provide even greater transparency and choice, we are working on a number of other cookie-related enhancements. Melanoma is actually a cancer involving pigmented cells that may happen anywhere in the skin. This eye disease usually develops on the patient’s iris and in the back portion of the eye. While the treatment is geared towards saving as much vision as possible, more often than not, it requires the removal of the eye so that the tumor will not spread any further. As with any disease, early diagnosis and immediate treatment will improve the chance of a patient in making a full and complete recovery.
Dr Jim Kokkinakis (Optometrist) graduated in 1983 from the Optometry School University of NSW. He has a specialist clinical practice in the Sydney CBD with interests in Eye Strain, Computer Vision problems, Treatment of Eye Diseases and complex Contact lens Fittings.
Taking of over-the-counter analgesics are helpful in alleviating the pain and the tenderness which the patient is complaining about.
Avoid using contact lenses and eye makeup when one is still in the treatment process for stye. A swollen lip is often the result of an injury from a car crash or from an after school fight.
Allergens that come into contact with a person's respiratory tract, skin, nose, eyes and gastrointestinal tract can produce an allergic reaction if the person has an allergy to that allergen. Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are fluid-filled lesions that generally occur on the outside of the lips, but can appear on the nose, fingers and chin. A brain abscess is a mass of macrobiotic organisms enclosed in a membrane inside the brain. Overall, a sinus infection can lead to an abscess of the brain, although only in very rare cases.
As mentioned, these are general symptoms of brain abscesses since patients normally exhibit different signs upon arrival in hospitals. Sinus infections originating from the frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoid sinuses are mostly responsible for brain abscesses among patients. Abscesses close to the frontal lobe of the brain originate from the frontal and ethmoid sinuses, while those near the temporal lobe originate from the sphenoid sinuses. A sizable abscess affecting the frontal lobe of the brain can cause hemiparesis (weakness on one part of the body), motor, and speech impairment among patients. 1 – Myofascial pain involves discomfort or pain in the muscles that control jaw function. 2 – Internal derangement of the joint involves a displaced disc, dislocated jaw, or injury to the condyle. Rheumatic disease, such as arthritis, may also affect the temporomandibular joint as a secondary condition. Because more studies are needed on the safety and effectiveness of most treatments for jaw joint and muscle disorders, experts strongly recommend first using the most conservative, reversible treatments possible.
Because the most common jaw joint and muscle problems are temporary and do not get worse, simple treatment may be all that is necessary to relieve discomfort. For many people with TMJ disorders, short-term use of over-the-counter pain medicines or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, may provide temporary relief from jaw discomfort. Your orthodontist may recommend an oral appliance, also called a stabilization splint or bite guard, which is a plastic guard that fits over the upper or lower teeth. The conservative, reversible treatments described are useful for temporary relief of pain – they are not cures for TMJ disorders.
Botox® (botulinum toxin type A) is a neurotoxin protein that is used to relax facial muscles. By using this protein to target the muscles that cause TMJ, we are able to relax the musculature and provide relief in certain circumstances. Conjunctivitis is often caused by a virus or by a bacterial infection, called infective conjunctivitis, although allergies, toxic agents and underlying diseases can also be responsible. It is intended for general information purposes only and does not address individual circumstances. These pigmented cells are also located in the eyes.  These pigmented cells may become affected and can develop into an eye disease called ocular melanoma, which is the primary cancer most common to the eye. Unlike the abovementioned ocular melanoma that starts from the iris, this eye disease develops from the cells in the retina.
Death is rarely reported for this eye disease so long as it is diagnosed early and treated promptly. As many as 7,000 children, mostly in non developed countries, around the world have passed away as a result of this eye disease. Even ocular emergencies can lead to some form of vision loss, or even complete blindness, if left untreated. This condition is a result of an infection of the oil glands of our eyelids that is essential in the lubrication of the eyeball. The stye then develops to a yellowish spot at the center of the lump, meaning pus has accumulated.

The mere touching or contracting the infected eye with pus can contaminate a person if not careful. If one is about to use an eye medication, hand washing is very essential in avoiding cross contamination. When the infection has gone, one can wear contact lenses but with thorough cleansing first. Swollen lips can also be caused by an allergic reaction to a certain allergen or as simple as a cold sore developing on the outer lip.
These include the specific pathogens involved, the location of the abscess, size of the abscess, and cause of the infection. In these cases, the infection usually spreads from the respective sinus to the brain through a network of veins, and body fluids such as lymph and sinus mucosa. Sphenoid related brain abscesses are particularly fatal since they can spread to other close regions of the brain such as the pituitary glands, cavernous sinuses, and the frontal lobe. Infections of the temporal lobe of the brain can cause migraine headaches, aphasia (language impediments), and visual troubles. This is because there have been few studies and clinical trials to support specific surgical treatments or antimicrobial regiments to cure the condition. Enhanced methods of treating sinus infections such as antibiotic regiments have led to a dramatic drop in sinus complications leading to brain infections. Some people have other health problems that co-exist with TMJ disorders, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep disturbances or fibromyalgia, a painful condition that affects muscles and other soft tissues throughout the body. Rheumatic diseases refer to a large group of disorders that cause pain, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints, muscles, and bone. Conservative treatments do not invade the tissues of the face, jaw, or joint, or involve surgery.
Your health care provider or a physical therapist can recommend exercises if appropriate for your particular condition. When necessary, your orthodontist can prescribe stronger pain or anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants, or anti-depressants to help ease symptoms.
Used in small doses, Botox injections can actually help alleviate some health problems and have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for certain disorders. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment and should not be relied on to make decisions about your health. Take note however that orbital cellulites may lead to fatal complications because of additional pressure inside the brain. This rarely happens in the more developed nations, though the disease itself still occurs with 300 cases being reported in the United States the previous year. Patients of such ocular emergencies, like those suffering from occlusion of the central retinal artery, detachment of the retina, or any penetrating injury to the eyes, would do well to immediately consult with an emergency physician at the least, or even an eye doctor, if possible. Another complication is the formation of scars or is a term called chalazion that can end up to cysts. If you have developed a stye and usually apply makeup, throw away the makeup kit for it can house the bacteria or viral agents that have caused the disease. According to Medline Plus, the allergic reaction is contained to the body part that came into contact with the allergen. According to University of Ottawa, lip lacerations that have torn the skin and the muscle should be repaired or can result in a depression in the scar.
Signs and symptoms include a tingling or painful sensation around the area a day or two before the blister appears. Pathogens culpable for brain abscesses usually originate from the bloodstream, direct infections, and direct head trauma. In the UK, for example, the National Health Service (NHS) indicates that only one in a thousand cases of brain abscesses originates from the sinuses. Eventually, the abscess may cause tiny blood vessels in the brain to rupture causing symptoms reminiscent of meningitis such as vomiting, stiff neck, and seizures.
Nonetheless, it is almost impossible to diagnose brain abscesses using these localizing symptoms since few patients exhibit them upon admission. In most cases, brain specialists together with a team of hematologists, and ENT doctors will determine the best cause of action to take as per the patient’s prognosis.
Today, physicians can easily identify and treat brain abscesses using advanced imaging techniques, surgical procedures, and antibiotic drugs. Let us use the newest technology and our vast experience to customize a solution for your health needs.
These disorders share some common symptoms, which suggests that they may share similar underlying mechanisms of disease. Reversible treatments do not cause permanent changes in the structure or position of the jaw or teeth. If a splint causes or increases pain, or affects your bite, stop using it and see your health care provider.
It’s easily spread through poor hand washing or by sharing an object (like a towel) with someone who has it.
Never ignore professional medical advice in seeking treatment because of something you have read on the BootsWebMD Site. This can be in a slarge form that may cause deformation of the cornea of the eye and shall impair one’s vision. It is worth noting that direct infections that originate from parts of the skull such as nasal, ear, and eye cavities (sinus infection) are a leading cause of brain abscesses among patients.

Additionally, in the US, only 21% of brain abscesses reported in health institutions stem from ear infections and paranasal sinuses. Even when TMJ disorders have become persistent, most patients still do not need aggressive types of treatment. Children diagnosed with conjunctivitis may be asked to stay off school or nursery for a short period of time, although Public Health England says this is not necessary unless a child is unwell. Some people are at risk for this condition such as those who have diabetes, chronic blepharitis, seborrhea, and other chronic illnesses.
Anesthesia induction is needed for children for they can be fearful and anxious during the procedure. A moderate to severe reaction can produce swelling of the lips or tongue, the person may have difficulty breathing or swallowing, redness in the face can occur as well as unconsciousness. Or a plastic surgeon may have to perform surgery to repair the skin and muscle if it is torn as well.
Treatment can include lidocaine to help relive pain, and benzocaine can be used to reduce irritation. Our practice has won numerous awards, including being voted the Living Best of Reader’s Choice Award in 2015. Allergic conjunctivitis (caused by seasonal pollens, animal dander, cosmetics and perfumes) and chemical conjunctivitis (from toxic chemicals or liquids, including bleach and furniture polish) are not contagious.
Those who are immunocompromised patients are also at risk and people who are under a lot of stress are susceptible for this condition. When stye infection is note controlled, the progression of a systemic infection is a possibility.
Conjunctivitis is a common condition that is rarely serious and will not cause long-term eye or vision damage if promptly detected and treated. Symptom: Lots of tearsInfective and allergic conjunctivitis are known for causing more tear production than usual.
Symptom: Itchy or burning eyesYou would know it if you felt it - that overwhelming itchy, burning, or gritty feeling in the eyes, which is typical of conjunctivitis.
Symptom: Drainage from the eyesA clear, watery drainage is common with infective and allergic conjunctivitis. When the drainage is more greenish-yellow (and there’s a lot of it), this is more likely to be infective conjunctivitis. Symptom: Crusty eyelidsIf you wake up with your eyes "stuck shut", this may be caused by the discharge that accumulates during sleep from infective conjunctivitis. Crusty eyelids are less common with viral conjunctivitis than with bacterial conjunctivitis. Symptom: Sensitivity to lightConjunctivitis can cause mild sensitivity to light (photophobia). A child who has severe symptoms, such as changes in vision, photosensitivity or severe pain may have an infection that has spread beyond the conjunctiva and should receive urgent medical advice. Symptom: 'Something in the eye'You may notice an irritating feeling like something is stuck in your eye. Diagnosing conjunctivitisA doctor can usually diagnose conjunctivitis by its characteristic symptoms. In some cases, a swab of the discharge from the eye is sent to a lab for analysis to determine the cause.
When conjunctivitis means something morePersistent conjunctivitis can be a sign of an underlying medical condition in the body. Often these are inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). Conjunctivitis is also seen in Kawasaki disease (a rare disease associated with fever in infants and young children) and certain inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Treating conjunctivitisAntibiotics are not usually prescribed for infective conjunctivitis nowadays. If the symptoms are severe or persist then antibiotic eye drops or ointment may be recommended. Allergic conjunctivitis should improve once the allergen is removed and can be treated with anti-allergy eye drops. Chemical conjunctivitis requires prompt washing of the affected eye(s) for five minutes and immediate medical attention. Do likewise when removing discharge from the eyes by wiping from the inside to the outside of the eye area. How long am I contagious?Conjunctivitis is infectious from around the time symptoms appear until the time when the symptoms have resolved. Public Health England advises that it is not generally necessary to keep a child with conjunctivitis away from school or nursery. Preventing its spreadIf you or your child has infective conjunctivitis, avoid touching the eye area, and wash your hands frequently.
