Swelling of the legs is abnormal and should be evaluated by a physician if it occurs more than occasionally after a long day of sitting or standing. Swelling may occur due to high pressure in the veins of the legs, local injury, inflammatory changes, obstruction of lymphatic fluid outflow, infection, low blood protein levels, obesity, pregnancy, fluid retention states, or drug effects. Failure of the calf muscles to pump venous blood out of the legs due to stroke, venous injury, arthritis limiting ankle motion, or inactivity. Localized swelling may be due to trauma, hematoma (collection of non-flowing blood in the soft tissue), infections, fracture, superficial thrombophlebitis (clots in veins of the fatty tissues), rupture of a tendon or muscle, cyst at a joint (such as a synovial cyst at the knee), and, sometimes, spontaneous bleeding into the tissue due to a ruptured blood vessel. Some of the most common medications which cause leg swelling are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs taken for pain relief or for arthritic discomfort and calcium channel blockers taken for heart disease or hypertension. Cellulitis, infection of the skin and fatty tissues of the leg may cause swelling with pain and tenderness. Swelling of the foot, especially if the skin does not pit with brief application of pressure, may be due to lymphedema, a failure of the microscopic network of channels which move tissue fluid from the extremity back to the blood stream at the level of the upper chest. After venous insufficiency, obesity is the next most common cause of lower extremity swelling in the United States.
Routine daily use of graduated compression support hose, often rated at a compression level of 20-30 or 30-40 mm Hg. Lymphedema may require special treatments called manual lymphatic drainage to massage the legs over a period of time with wrapping of the legs in special “short-stretch” elastic wraps and, sometimes, compression pump therapy to mobilize lymphatic fluid from the legs back to the bloodstream in the chest by intermittent squeezing of the legs.
Management of swelling of the legs often becomes a lifelong issue, but it is important because swelling will increase the risk of infection or leg ulcer and the underlying conditions may be associated with serious complications such as deep vein thrombosis or difficulty healing injuries or surgical incisions.
The most common causes of leg swelling or soft tissue pain or tenderness in North America are venous insufficiency and obesity.
Swelling occurs in a condition where the ankles, lower legs and feet muscles have an excessive buildup of a fluid.
She has always have problem with swollen her both lower legs to both foot and Dr Agrawal, from Rain Cross Clinic in Riverside CA, gave her Water Pill which name Furnsonside (spelling) but it is NOT help at all to reduced. Your problem and mine may be totally unrelated, but I also had and still do have this problem. When I first discovered this, I waited near a week, assuming that I may have had some extra water retention this month due to a menstrual cycle. I live in a area where these doctors for these problems are not available to me unless I want to travel quite a distance. I read the comments from Debbie Canavan about the swelling in just one foot( the right one). Hey Debbie I have the same exact problem, and I think that it is from wearing flip flops, I wear them almost all year long, and i noticed this started happening last year, and it started again a few months ago. For me it started happening when standing for prolonged periods of times (12 hours per day for 7 days) and wearing shoes that wear a tiny bit big on me. There are many causes for swollen feet and ankles.  Most are likely to resolve quickly, however, some of the causes can be the sign of a health concern which needs to be addressed. When the swelling affects only one of your feet, most likely the swelling is the result of a local problem, ie an injury or a problem with one of the veins.  Swelling in both feet is considered a systemic problem – a problem which affects the entire body. 1)  Pitting Edema:  Usually results from water retention and is associated with things such as heart failure, pregnancy and systemic diseases.
2)    Non-pitting Edema: Is the most common type of foot swelling, usually a result of injury.
Soft tissue injuries of the foot and leg can lead to localised swelling.  The severity of the swelling can depend on the injury.
Liver disease can cause a change in the levels of hormones and fluid-regulating chemicals leading to fluid retention. Swelling from arthritis tends to be sporadic, coming and going at different times.  It is most commonly caused by active inflammatory synovitis (inflammation of the membrane that lines the joint) associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Severe swelling of feet in pregnancy can be a sign of pre-eclampsia which is a medical emergency. Veins work to pump blood back up from the feet and legs to the heart through one-way valves.  If these valves stop working properly due to weakness or damage, fluid can seep back down and pool causing a swollen ankle and foot.
Cellulitis is treated with antibiotics and can last anything from a few days to a number of months. Please note: the information provided is of a general nature and should not be used as a diagnosis! Sebum is the oily fluid secreted by the sebaceous glands of the skin that keeps it soft and shining. An abscess contains a middle portion that is filled with debris, which is enveloped by a clear border pink in color.
If you have pain and inflammation on the abscess, or painful sores on your groin or rectal area, or if the size of the abscess is over 1cm, you can visit your GP.
Pain or tenderness in the legs associated with swelling is an especially important reason to seek evaluation.
Further testing is based upon the clinical assessment and may include ultrasound, X-ray,CT, or MRI imaging in the legs or evaluation of the heart or blood vessels in the abdomen or pelvis. The causes of swelling in one leg may be similar to the other leg, but it is not unusual for different factors to cause the swelling in each leg. High pressure in the veins of the legs results in fluid, proteins, and blood cells leaking through the wall of small veins into the soft tissues, especially near the ankles.
Pain from cellulitis may be very severe or may manifest as tenderness and mild pain with faintly pink to bright red skin. Frequently, conservative measures are helpful and these often are started before the cause of the swelling is fully evaluated. Resolving lower extremity swelling, if possible, prior to extremity surgery is an important means of reducing the chances of wound healing complications including bleeding, hematoma, wound breakdown, or infection. Swelling can be simply defined as the situation in which thickness of the skin increases due to some systematic symptoms. If anyone has had a problem with this and can shed some light on this for me I’d greatly appreciate it. For just a moment, both feet were swelling, now the left foot has reduced its swelling and yet my right foot is so swollen still (feel as if my foot resembles the puffer fish). In fact it started with only pain in the ball of my foot, but no swelling, and only pain when I was barefooted. The reason for this is that excess body fat compresses the leg and abdominal veins, this increases pressure within the blood vessels which then promotes fluid leakage into the soft tissues – swelling the feet and ankles. It is not like normal skin color and the color of the abscess varies from mild pink to dark pink and even red. If for any reason, the normal flow of the sebum is disturbed it accumulates to form an abscess. If the abscess is found in your arm or leg, your doctor will press it firmly to check if there is any swelling in lymph gland. Depending on the area of abscess and its size you will be given local anesthesia before the procedure. But the term covers several conditions that can hurt your ticker and keep it from doing its job.
It is intended for general informational purposes only and does not address individual circumstances.
While some of the causes of leg swelling may be minor self-limiting conditions, others require very urgent medical care to reduce the likelihood of major complications or death. The most common failure of diagnosis occurs due to a venous ultrasound study which is performed in a manner to rule out clots, known as deep vein thrombosis, in the deep veins of the legs and does not evaluate for failure of one-way valves in the leg veins (venous insufficiency). Frequently, leg swelling is caused by more than one factor such as venous insufficiency, obesity, and previous saphenous vein harvest for heart bypass surgery.
This causes pitting edema, swelling which will leave a temporary indentation in the skin with pressure from a shoe, sock, or intentional pressure such as a squeeze with a finger. Obesity also accelerates the stretching of the leg veins due to the effects of gravity, thus contributing to the progression of venous insufficiency.
Chronic swelling of the legs with discomfort or a heavy feeling to the legs often contributes to inactivity which worsens the problem since the calf muscle pumping of blood out of the legs with walking is an important means of getting venous blood back to the heart.
It occurs as a result of some systematic conditions such as injuries, infections, fracture, diseases of joints etc. But during pregnancy, water pills should not be used as treatment for swelling because it can be harmful for the health of mother and child.
I have a severe case of H Pylori and have had it for some years as recently I was forced to see a doctor when my abdomen felt like it had a blockage in the gut.
He said that since it was in only one foot, my left one, and not only was my foot always swollen, but my leg also. Along with the increased swelling in my right foot, the skin feels so tight and it is so sore when I walk and at times just sitting or laying down it can be rather sore as well. But I sure would very much appreciate ANY advice, suggestions or possible diagnosis from a professional without having to travel so far if its even possible. I went out last night and had no problems other than tired maybe when I went to bed around midnight. I had this for 11 days until I twisted my foot, and the swelling added to the pain except now the pain is on the upper part and not only the ball of the foot. My blood work comes back next Tuesday and I am going to be going to an orhhopedic or other type of foot specialist because I am convinced my problem will NOT be any of the two options he gave me. If you are inactive, this inactivity leads to blood pooling, which further increases pressure within the leg veins.
People with weakened immunity, certain chronic disorders like diabetes, ulcers and certain medical conditions like cancer, leukemia, sickle cell disease, and peripheral vascular disorder have more chance for getting abscesses.
Ensure that you are removing the package as per the doctor’s instructions and in case of any swelling or redness on the site you should report your doctor without any delay. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment and should not be relied on to make decisions about your health. Untreated leg swelling may lead to other complications such as infection, poorly-healing wounds, or clots in leg veins. It is common for patients with chronic leg swelling to be told that the ultrasound is “normal” or “was negative for clot” while failing to test for treatable venous insufficiency.
Persistent or excessive swelling may causes damage to the skin if proper medical treatment is not taken. They ran a whole panel of labs on cvc and that included for any kidney, liver or heart abnormalities, yet it all checked out just fine. I’m getting rather worked up and scared in fear that my feet will need to be amputated or it will cause a possible fatality here.
Also my doctor put me on a antiflammatory which I don’t like because it gets me dizzy. Abscess can be formed in any part of the body like tooth, arms, legs, and vagina and on your spine. A person who works in dirty environment and having more exposure to is at high risk of developing abscess. Bacteria would continue to build up on the abscess entering into the tissues developing inflammation of the skin. For some people red streak will start leaking from the abscess indicating the lymph nodes are damaged.
The doctor will initially clean the abscess area with sterile water and make a small incision to cut open the abscess and gently drain the pus inside. Never ignore professional medical advice in seeking treatment because of something you have read on the WebMD Site.
In time, I suppose I will need to go to any length to see a doctor, but much rather avoid it if I possibly can. Please, I will be very grateful to get any insight on my condition here. If Debbie is answered on this problem please write to me also as we seem to be having the same problem going on.

Now both feet and both ankles are swollen huge and hurt like they’re bruised but ache too. By only taking three pills it solved the problem, except from standing my foot gets back to being swollen.
Abscess is formed when the normal flow of sebaceous glands are obstructed and due to inflammation of hair follicles.
Clogged ArteriesA buildup of sticky plaque (fat and cholesterol) can narrow your heart's arteries, making it harder for blood to pass through.
I substituted with Advil, but I would basically have to be on it every day because my foot goes back to being swollen again and again and again. Many people don't even know there's a problem until an artery is clogged and they have a heart attack. She got tired of same medicine and never finally get better and no more swollen… Please HELP. They did this within a couple of hours and I can’t think of anything unusual I might have done to cause it.
But there are warning signs of coronary artery disease, like frequent chest pain called angina.
My feet are starting to become very painful and every time I look at my feet, I become very frustrated. I don’t know why me feet are swollen, it could be water, medication, but I do sit a lot, because my back becomes very painful from standing and walking and sometimes doing a little garden work. Blood carries oxygen, and a shortage of that can quickly damage the organ and possibly kill you. Compared to men, they're more likely to have heartburn or heart flutters, lose their appetite, cough, or feel tired or weak. Act FastIf you think you're having a heart attack, call 911 right away, even if you're not sure.
Irregular Heart Beat: ArrhythmiaYour heart beats because of electrical impulses, and they can get off rhythm.
They're often harmless and pass quickly, but some types can affect your blood flow and take a serious toll on your body. Heart Muscle Disease: CardiomyopathyAbnormal heart muscle, or cardiomyopathy, makes it hard to pump and carry blood to the rest of your body. Over time, health problems such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes cause this serious condition, which can lead to heart failure. This weakens the muscle and lowers the amount of blood flowing out even more, which adds to the problem. Most cases of heart failure are the result of coronary artery disease and heart attacks.
Congenital Heart DefectFrom birth, you can have a leaky valve or a damaged wall separating your heart chambers. Sometimes, the defects aren't found until you're an adult. They don't all need treatment, but some require medicine or surgery.
If you have one, you're more likely to have arrhythmias, heart failure, and infected valves, but there are ways to lower these chances. Sudden cardiac death happens when the heart's electrical system goes haywire, making it beat irregularly and dangerously fast. Instead of pumping out blood to your body, your chambers quiver. CPR can help bring back your regular heart beat, but without it, you can die within minutes. During this painless test, your doctor will stick electrodes on your skin for a few minutes. Meanwhile, your doctor watches your EKG, heart rate, and blood pressure to see if the organ gets enough blood. If your doctor thinks there's a problem, he might ask you to wear the monitor for a day or two.
Chest X-raysThese pictures of your heart, lungs, and chest bones are made with a small amount of radiation.
In this image, the bulge on the right is an enlarged left ventricle, the main pumping chamber. From the ultrasound, your doctor can spot damage or problems with your chambers, valves, or blood flow.
Cardiac CTCardiac computerized tomography takes detailed X-rays of your heart and its blood vessels. Doctors use it to look for buildups of plaque or calcium in your coronary arteries, as well as valve problems and other types of heart disease. Cardiac CatheterizationIn this procedure, your doctor guides a narrow tube, called a catheter, through a blood vessel in your arm or leg until it reaches your heart. But left alone and ignored, they get worse. If your heart starts to fail, you might be short of breath or feel tired. Bypass SurgeryYour doctor might suggest this operation if you have one or more arteries that are too narrow or blocked. He first removes a blood vessel from an area of your body, such as your chest, belly, legs, or arms, and then attaches it to a healthy artery in your heart. Who Gets Heart Disease?Men are more likely to have a heart attack than women, and at an earlier age.
And if you have high cholesterol and high blood pressure, do everything you can to get them in check. Why Smoking Hurts Your HeartIf you light up, you're two to four times more likely to get heart disease.
Specialists will help you come up with a plan that covers exercise, nutrition, emotional support, and more.
