For survival purposes, it may be better to teach kids how to use dental floss and a primitive fishing hook, but that may not suit your timeline or your kids patience. I’d suggest just getting them a small quality pole instead of some gaudy Hello Kitty thing (no offense if you personally have Hello Kitty survival gear). This is one of those things that kids really like – especially if you can teach them how to use it to start the campfire for your camp. A compass is another very important piece of survival gear, and something that kids like to have.
Flashlights are great for walking around but when you’re back in the tent, a lantern is much better.
Not only do watches help you tell time and hopefully keep everyone on a schedule so they can be done with what they need to and be where you need them to be at the appropriate time (hopefully), then can be a useful survival item.
A knife is one of those cherished things that kids really love and moms really freak out about. Which book you get will depend on the child, their age, and what you’d like them to learn.
My goal is to help families to understand how to intelligently protect their family and their way of life against real threats, without all the end-of-the-world doomsday crap. Former Counterintelligence Special Agent, US Army Chief Warrant Officer, and Combat Veteran.

The Emergency Survival Fishing Kit is an exceptionally well stocked, durable, quality and inexpensive survival fishing kit. The Survival Fishing Kit comes in a 2oz Tobacco tin which is sealed with water resistant tape. Rounding out the utility of the Emergency Survival Fishing Kit is a brief fishing manual written by fishing enthusiasts. A combat tracker squad needs to travel as light as possible, but still carry the right equipment to survive on the battlefield.
The trackers combat load is the mission-essential equipment required to fight and survive in the environment he’s operating in. Level 2: Describes the fighting load carried by the tracker which should not exceed 48 pounds. Editor-in-Chief’s Note: Please join us in welcoming John Hurth of TYR Group as a Contributor on ITS. Called the box knot or the square knot keychain, this type of keychains not only have a great look, but are also fairly easy to make. What’s your biggest concern about surviving life after an EMP attack destroys our grid?
Retired engineer-turned-gardener Mel Bartholomew’s “Square Foot Gardening” consistently tops the list of best-selling gardening books – and there’s a reason.
Square foot gardening differs from most other gardening systems in that you don’t use your native earth.
The classic Square Foot bed is a 4’ x 4’ square constructed of anything from lumber to bricks to cinder blocks. Another place where square foot gardening shines is in its ability to produce high amounts of veggies in a small space. Unlike some methods, square foot gardening as Bartholomew recommends it is a completely organic system. David Goodman is a naturalist, author and hard-core gardener who has grown his own food since 1984.
David is the author of four books, writes a regular column for The Ag Mag in North Central Florida, is a Mother Earth News blogger and has also written for outlets including Backwoods Home, Survival Blog and Self-Reliance Magazine.
David is a Christian, an artist, a husband, a father of seven, a cigar-smoker and an unrepentant economics junkie who now lives somewhere near the equator on a productive cocoa farm. And for lots more gardening info, click here and subscribe to his often hilarious YouTube channel. I got rid of the boxes this season and using berms, because otherwise I’d be missing this entire season. Mondays: We will be sharing the best learning ideas, crafts and more from our favorite sites that tie into our weekly theme. Your kids may not be the right age for my examples (I didn’t want to make this a list of 132 items) or they might just not be in the cool group. Get them a real pole and spend your time teaching them how to use it, and then focus on teaching them how to fabricate stuff out of nothing.
If you marry them up with a treasure hunt or kind of game, you can keep them busy for hours. There’s just something that resonates with kids when you can hit something and sparks come out. If you can keep them from driving you nuts by whistling in the house with it, you need to get them one. The problem is that most lanterns are bulky and heavy if they last a while due to the huge batteries etc for anything bright enough to be useful. Something like the Timex Expedition is very inexpensive, good quality, has an indiglo light so they can read it at night, and can be used to figure out North during the day.
They’re also very useful to keep in touch if your camp area is a good distance away from your latrine area (which it should be) or if you have several tents or camp areas that your friends and family are using.
They make LOTS of models but you don’t have to buy the Holy Grail of Swiss Army knives. I personally use a couple of Fozzils Bowls in my setup because they weigh close to nothing and pack flat.

As a responsible adult, it would also be nice if you could help with their education of the world. Also if you pull the end off it has a small compartment for tinder also comes with a small cotton ball to make a quick fire. I grew up in the woods and spent a lifetime in various environments from deserts to jungles to politically-sensitive urban environments, and I'm here to tell you what I know.
Each item in your kit will depend on your skill set and what you’re trying to prepare for. When considering disaster preparedness, keep in mind that what survival gear and emergency supplies you add to your bug out bag and then pack for your survival kit can mean the difference between life and death, or at least affect your level of comfort if SHTF and you had to get outta dodge. You have many friends in your daily life but your good and best friends are very few in numbers. Friend is basically a person attached to another person with feelings and by heart. Like Basic Emergency Fishing Kit, it was designed as a collaborative effort between survivalists and avid fisherman. If that is not enough there is a Silica Gel Desiccant inside and we have sealed it is plastic,  just to make sure your survival fishing kit stays dry. Instead of a basic razor blade, the Emergency Survival Fishing Kit includes a Military Approved Derma-Safe Utility Knife.
It includes suggestions and techniques that increase your chances of catching fish, the basics of setting up your line and fishing knot tying. In order for the tracker and his squad to successfully perform their combat tracking mission, mobility will be key. He can’t be expected to carry gear for every possible contingency or combat situation, rather his loadout must be based on his particular mission and the ability to remain mobile but combat effective. These items are the uniform, boots, belt, dog tags, compass, tourniquet and any other survival items carried on his person. These items are typically the trackers individual weapon, basic load of ammunition and load bearing equipment. Instead of simply asking for your support with donations, we’ve developed a membership to allow our readers to support what we do and allow us to give you back something in return. The binos are very handy in finding trails if you lose them (helps you focus without disturbing the spoor) and the camera to take pics of prints for easier reference to go back to.
I work as a civie facilities person on a naval base and i use a multitool and knife everyday.
Not merely for religious purposes, but reading keeps the mind clear and fresh through the down times. A must for any Collector of Japanese weaponry, the Gunto is a military sword used by the Japanese army and navy. The added benefit is that a fairly short keychain can hold enough paracord to be actually useful (for example for replacing shoelaces).
I pull of two cords at the same time when beginning the tightening, then each cord separately. Square foot gardening promises little or no weeding, consistent results, and lots of organic veggies from a tiny space.
Instead, you use a perfect mix (Mel’s Mix) of “soil” created from one part compost, one part vermiculite, and one part peat moss. Bartholomew also strongly recommends putting a permanent grid over the top dividing the bed into easily manageable 1’ squares. It’s also weed-free, unless you start with homemade compost that wasn’t “cooked” enough in a hot compost pile. If you want to grow beans, cabbages, salad greens, peppers, onions and other smaller plants, square foot beds are very convenient and supportive. As you pull out spent crops, put in a handful of compost in the holes left behind and then plant again.
With a square foot garden, you can drop a garden right over grass or weeds without even pulling stuff up.
If square foot gardening were the end-all system, it would be recommended across the gardening community, right? It may be perfect for a townhome’s backyard… and gardener that likes watering regularly… but it’s less attractive when you have a lot of land available. I use a combination of methods ranging from row gardening to biointensive beds to water gardening to permaculture, etc.
And if it takes a 4’ x 4’ box with good instructions and a smiling mentor; sure, you can start with square foot gardening. You can easily get them to play games to record what kind of plants they see, different birds, map the campground, and all sorts of things. It also comes with a lanyard that keeps the two halves together so they don’t lose half of it.
The Storm Safety Whistle I use in my kit is a great choice for them because it’s stupid loud and the one I linked to has a lanyard with it so they can wear it around their neck. I was lucky enough that MPOWERD sent me one to do a review of their inflatable solar Luci lantern, which pretty much solves all of that. Because it can reach those frequencies, you can even use them to listen to the NOAA weather channels.
Just make sure you get a self-standing tent or you’ll constantly be fiddling with it. HotHands has a pack of 10, 40, or 80 that warm up by just opening them up and they last up to 10 hours long. This is currently the list of the top 10 best-selling prepper and survival gear items, along with an explanation for each. Here’s what Graywolf from Graywolf Survival carries and why, as well as some suggestions on how to plan your EDC kit. With a 1″ square piece of Infrared IFF tape placed on the top of the headgear for identification by friendly air.
The SAR Eclipse device is very compact and has been tested and observed out to 10 miles during daylight conditions.
This small flash light comes in white, green, blue and red colors and is perfect for signaling or conducting map checks at night.
Besides using a signal mirror for signaling, applying camouflage or shaving, it’s also a good piece of equipment to deflect and manipulate light in order to view details of an impression. A whistle comes in handy when having to signal commands to other friendly elements over gunfire. This notebook is used to record information gained during the mission, along with footprint data cards. No more than a basic combat load of ammunition for the weapon system should be carried on the LBE. The GPS is a good piece of equipment that can track the route of the squad and give the squad’s precise location. These are great for making small repairs and typically have a knife, file, flat tip and philips head screw driver, can opener and pliers. A headlamp is a good item to have when it’s important to have both hands free such as conducting a prisoner search or some other type of exploitation. This piece of equipment holds all mission essential equipment that’s to be carried by the tracker for extended operations. The tracker needs to carry enough water to last for the duration of the operation, or until a suitable water source is found, or resupply occurs.
CAT PAWS are a great item to place over the soles of the boot so the tracker can conceal his own tracks.

The Viper hood breaks up the recognizable and familiar outline and shape of the human head and shoulders.
The VS17 Signal Panel can be laid out on the ground to identify troop positions to friendly aircraft or to identify where help is needed. Depending on the operational environment, a hammock may be essential for staying dry when bedding down for the night.
This needs to be large enough to provide protection from the elements as a shelter, or used as a makeshift litter to transport a casualty. Depending on the environment, this could range from a sleeping system with a ground mat for extreme temperatures, to a poncho liner for more tropical climates. Has the author gone native, or does he truly suggested a load out for a 3-day pack sans TP? This sword is hand forged from damascus steel and has very intricate copper details on the scabbard. Bartholomew also has plans for melon and bean trellises so you can grow vertically and get more use from the space. This means you do not have to bring in anything new after the initial purchases of peat and vermiculite.
Mel Bartholomew is really fun to read – the book is worth buying just to hear what a truly excited and enthusiastic gardener sounds like.
Yet writers like Steve Solomon, Ruth Stout, John Jeavons, Toby Hemenway, Carol Deppe, Edward Smith, Dick Raymond and others have different methods that work for them.
Though Bartholomew is using the system for international relief efforts by growing with compost alone, rather than his three-part mix, even compost takes work to make, or money, if you buy it. The standard square foot bed also doesn’t allow you to grow much in the way of large root crops or crawlers like melons. You might not have weeds to pull – but you’ll be spending some time watering during the summer.
Square foot gardening is in my arsenal – but it doesn’t play a major role in my garden plans.
But if you’re anything like me, you’ll eventually outgrow the box and concentrate on building your own soil rather than bringing it in from outside.
A flashlight is an absolute MUST when camping but is also something they’d use on a daily basis.
I don’t have any really good suggestions for them because it all depends on how much you want to spend and how useful you really want them to be.
Also, you can write in important safety information in the journal such as your contact information, the grid coordinates of your camp, etc that they could use if they need to even if they had to find someone to help use it.
The lanyard has a cinch thing on it that contains a whistle too, which is an important piece of survival gear.
Line up 10 of them and see how many directions they show if you want to see just how much they suck. Clipping some sort of light to them will help you keep track of where they are without having to have bright lights on or around them to spoil the starlight when you finally lean back and enjoy the show. This panel is used as a recognition signal device for linking up with other ground elements. The knife should be heavy, sharp and versatile enough to use for building shelter, various survival tasks or in use as a fighting knife.
A Blast Match is another great fire producing survival tool designed for all-weather use and can be operated with one hand in case of injury. Contrary to popular belief, soldiers and Law Enforcement alike don’t get to pick and choose their weapon system or the caliber it shoots.
The size of this pack is dictated by the amount of equipment the tracker will need to sustain himself until a resupply can be requested.
The best aspect of the Viper is that it is designed to be worn in conjunction with the trackers combat equipment without interfering with the trackers ability to get to the pouches on his LBE. At a minimum, the kit should contain a bore brush, chamber brush, cleaning rod, slotted tip for patches, patches, CLP, lens brush for optics and an all-purpose utility brush.
Lewis, WA where he participated in multiple deployments overseas to include two combat tours in support of the Global War On Terror. I have yet to try a four color version, but it is fairly easy to simply join together cords of different colors and giving it a try. This grid can be made of stretched string, PVC, 1 x 2 lumber or whatever you have lying around. For a person just getting started, he takes the overwhelming world of food production and cuts it into nice, neat 12” x 12” pieces that are easy enough for even a complete novice to digest. He’s an organic gardener and a philanthropist, and just seems to be an all-around sharp guy with a good heart. In fact, I’m now digging beneath my old square foot beds and stacking in wood as water reservoirs in a hugelkultur-inspired fashion… but that’s another story altogether. It takes 3 AAA batteries but you can get really inexpensive adapters to put them into an AA charger. The cool thing about it is that it holds the BBs inside the handle, which is one of those really handy things so you don’t forget where you put them. These LED clip-on lights are really handy for that and can also be very useful to clip onto important items such as backpacks or the entrance to your tent. AA batteries are compact and common enough that they can be found just about anywhere in the world. The knife pictured above was a collaborative design between the author and custom knife make Jeff Crowner. The estimated time on operation, terrain operating in and weather conditions the trackers will have to endure are all be factors to be considered. Should the pack be dropped for any reason during the operation the tracker should have full canteens on his LBE. He now uses his years of tracking knowledge as the owner and lead instructor of the TYR Group where he and his staff conduct training on various tracking techniques.
Having a visual delineation of your plants is definitely helpful, but this part of the Square Foot Garden design is where gardeners often diverge from the plans in Bartholomew’s book. If you’ve got a limited amount of space, like well-planned systems, and you’ve got some resources, square foot gardening is a great method.
I personally use rechargeables with a solar panel and AA charger to keep all my stuff going.
I purposely chose this one though because it’s quality, cheap, light, and can shoot small rocks for when you run out of ammo. My food forests, seed saving and seed slinging, green manuring, and intercropping were beyond her, but a 4’ x 4’ box of veggies was a good gateway to introduce her to home food production.
Double-digging could create the same space for $0.00, provided you had a little compost or manure lying around.
If you wanted to feed your entire family with square foot beds, you’d be out some serious cash. This is really the best all-around stocking-stuffer gift out there for pretty much everyone on Earth. Granted, you’d earn it back in home-grown organic produce over time – which is why I bit the bullet and built beds for my wife – but it’s still a big outlay.
