I carry a Western Mountaineering Ultralite down bag with me that weighs 1 lb 13 oz and is rated for 20 degrees. The lightest weight backpacks are going to be the ones with a minimal internal frame or stay, or completely frameless.

I'd love to get the weight down, but there's only so much you can do without losing capabilities.
Another way to get the sleeping system weight down is to use a down top quilt rather than a full sleeping bag. To be clear, I'm not suggesting you all try and become ultralight backpackers and give up every comfort - that is NOT what I am saying at all.
I would like to suggest that Kifaru has high quality, lightweight shelter options as well as backpacks.

Tinke stands out from other health trackers because it’s the only one that measures heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation, and heart rate variability. In my first post I introduced you to the concept of lightweight backpacking, the benefits, how to get started, taking less stuff, and smaller amounts of things. If you take a careful look you’ll notice that your three heaviest items are your tent, your backpack, and your sleeping bag. I wish there were some clever hack or modifications that I could share with you to let you reduce the weight of these items and save money, but that’s not gonna happen.
REI, Big Agnes, Sierra Designs, and EMS are among some of the better known brands that offer one and two person options. A tarp can be an extremely lightweight option (my Gossamer Gear SpinnTwinn weighs just 12 oz) but requires a little more experience to pitch properly and may not be as easy to use in as many environments or situations as a tent.
I highly recommend WM as a quality sleeping bag manufacturer, but a bag such as this is a big investment and doesn’t come cheap ($300 -$400).
Reducing these three items (the big three) will have the largest impact on reducing your overall base weight. Originally from Southampton, England, Brian has lived in the US for over 15 years, finally settling in North Carolina. Instead of simply asking for your support with donations, we’ve developed a membership to allow our readers to support what we do and allow us to give you back something in return. It is the brand of my boots and pack, as well as a lot of my other gear which have lasted really well.
I have to admit though, that I have a hard time imagining packing everything that's necessary for a 5+ day trip in a 40l pack. The theory behind this is that the insulating part of the bag (the loft) is compressed under you anyway and so not doing anything. I personally have an issue with getting cold at night and with lower back pain, so I tend to favor a traditional sleeping bag with all round loft insulation.

Make small cuts to your gear weight where it makes sense and you'll see the weight saving add up. I sold my three-person, good-only-for-car-camping tent for more than enough to cover the cost of an earlier model of this $40, under three-pounds camouflage tent. But I wanted something for those occasional traveling situations when I can't find accommodations for the night and must create my own in a bit of woodland. Tinke is very lightweight and plugs into your smartphone, so make sure you keep your phone charged.
In my second post I focused on weighing your gear, using a detailed gear tracking list, weight summaries, and the importance of keeping it up to date.
If you want to get serious about reducing your overall pack weight and going lighter, you’ll need to tackle the big three to achieve that. If any one of your big three is over three pounds, it’s probably a good time to buy a new version anyway and take advantage of the improvements in build and technical materials being used today.
And while we’re on the subject of tent size, unless you regularly backpack or hike with a significant other, go with a one person tent and save as much unnecessary weight as possible. There is a lot of debate among backpackers and outdoors people over what the ideal rating is for a 3 season sleeping bag.
Having a sleeping bag that is more compressible is important when it comes to choosing a backpack. A quality down sleeping bag can last you over 10 years and easily pay for itself if you take care of it, clean it properly and store it uncompressed so that you don’t ruin the loft of the down fill. Chances are that a 40L backpack will be sufficient for just about any type of trip you are planning from an overnight hike to a 6-moth thru hike of the AT.
Advancements in backpack design have resulted in innovative ways to combat the lack of internal frames such as using your ground sheet as a folded pad in the back of you pack to provide comfort, support, and rigidity. His love of the outdoors started at a very early age, almost as far back as he can remember.
It's easy to do in the fall, but the spring and summer are going to require me to figure out a bug solution. Of course, this assumes you are using something (a sleeping pad) as insulation from the ground. However, as you said it just gets compressed anyway so it's not providing a lot of additional warmth. It was bright orange and looking a little dingy, but a good hand scrubbing made it look better and some gentle tumbling in a dryer brought back the loft. Smith & Wesson is well-known for its quality pistols and products, and the SHIELD is no different.

If you time your purchases right (think end of year sales) you can pick up some great deals and save a lot of money. The lightest tents on the market today tend to all be either single-walled tents or tents with intreated rain flys. Many one person tents now come with vestibules for storing your gear under cover outside of your tent. The smaller the bag can pack down to means you can choose a pack with a smaller volume, which in turn will save you some weight. Also look at some popular brands like Marmot, REI, Big Agnes, and Montbell that all have a good selection of quality affordable down bags in the $100 – $200 price range. It also lets you use your ground sheet as a multi-purpose piece of gear, something we’ll look at in more detail in a future blog post as a way of further reducing your base pack weight. Look for off season deals on sleeping bags and tents, and consider some of the online gear swapping forums that sell lightly used gear for reasonable prices. He snapped four of his toes and left them pointing backwards with only his pinky toe escaping relatively unscathed.
The MP Shield is a lightweight, striker-fire polymer pistol backed with a lifetime warranty. Single stack refers to the design of the magazine, which stacks each round vertically one on top of the other. Instead of carrying a heavy jug of drinking water, you can take your LifeStraw with you and drink from any body of water you find in the wilderness. Preppers will love having this sink so they can efficiently use water when it isn’t easily accessible.

The fabrics used by tent manufacturers have improved so significantly in recent years that single-walled tent are just as waterproof as double-walled tents and are no longer the condensation traps they used to be. A 20 degree bag is easily regulated using the zipper and your clothing choices if you want to use it in warmer temperatures.
Be sure to check out his blog for other great backpacking tips & tricks and gear reviews. It's smallness when stuffed still amazes me.For hard-core, long-term camping, neither might be a good idea. The Shield is available with or without Tritium Night Sights and with or without an external thumb safety. The M&P SHIELD only weighs 19oz, is less than an inch thick, and measures just 6 inches long.
For you wilderness pack or bug out bag, I highly recommend purchasing a high quality backpack with waist belt at the very least. This helps to distribute some of weight to off of your shoulders and on to your hips.If you can make it happen a pack with a frame sheet or other frames with an adequately padded waist belt would be another step up on the comfortability scale. However, like a tarp, these require certain characteristics of your campsite (can you say trees?) in order to be used. Lewis Leathers Westway No.W10 Lewis Leathers is recognised as the oldest still-operating motorcycle gear manufacturer in the world. Another nice addition would be a sternum strap which ensures your pack fits snugly around your body, preventing any swaying when you have to move quickly.Bug Out Bag StylesThe color of your pack is a matter of taste and need. I’d personally recommend that you invest in a quality, lightweight one-person tent and then consider going to a tarp or hammock as the next phase of going lighter if thats what you want to do. If you are planning on going hunting or have a need for concealment, then you should pick earth colors that will help make you blend in with your surroundings. If you’re the kind of person who needs to be color coordinated all the time, then you can also pick earth colors to help you blend your bug out bag with your surroundings and not stick out like a sore thumb. We’ve chosen the ?385 ($580) Westway boot, based on the Motorway boot but a little more suitable for wearing both on and off the bike. Similarly a pack that is earth toned and “tacticool” might just stand out in an urban environment.
The vintage-styled Westway is constructed from premium heavy cowhide; it also has heel and ankle straps to ensure a good fit, and a replaceable Goodyear welt sole to ensure longevity. Packs come in different sizes and your many online retailers can help you pick out the best bag for you depending on the number of days you plan to be gone and the equipment you have to carry. Try to find packs with several convenient pockets so you can stash important equipment and access it easily when you have to.Water proofing or at least ensuring your bag has adequate water resistance will protect your equipment from getting wet in a sudden heavy downpour.
Costing €189 ($250), they have polyurethane armour inserts in the heel and toebox, nylon ankle guards and are made from thick cowhide leather with a rubber sole. You can buy a high quality water cover for your pack, and even have a heavy duty plastic liner inside your pack to protect it from getting wet.Bug Out Bag ContentsThe next thing you have to consider is the equipment you will need to have in your pack. From personal experience, Dainese gear tends to be bulletproof—so you can reasonably expect these boots to easily outlast the popularity of Justin Bieber. Of course we all have different reasons and needs when we go outdoors, we still have to remember that there are basic equipment that should be with us all the time when going outdoors. The Elsinore has a steel shank in the Goodyear rubber sole, a stamped heel plate, a thick leather upper and a design that harks back to the classic motocross boots of yesteryear. Some of the items I mentioned here can also be carried on yourself, for example a knife and whistle can be hung from your neck or belt, and the lighter can be carried in your pocket. The next step is organizing your bug out bag. Stuffing all your equipment in your pack is a bad idea, particularly during certain emergencies when particular items need to be accessed quickly. The rule of thumb here is to keep the most important items on top.For example, jackets should be kept on top of the bug out bag so you can easily access them in a sudden downpour without having to rummage through your pack. Most Alpinestars gear is a little heavy on the flashy graphics, but the Italian-based multinational also caters for those of us who wear slightly more understated gear—with products like this, the Alpha Touring Boot.
For $170 you get an internally molded shin, toe and heel counters for impact resistance, and an accordion flex panel in front of the ankle.
Remember, important items related to safety and survival should be on top or easily accessible. As much as possible don’t leave equipment hanging from your bag.
If you are in a heavily forested area, equipment dangling from your pack might get caught on branches.
The $275 Legend R motorcycle boot comes in dark brown and has a thick leather upper with two straps, a zipper, an anti-slip oilproof sole, and internal protection on both sides of the ankle. I’d also like to add that it would be a good idea to keep your items separated in different zip-lock bags.
And this is another motorcycle boot with a waterproof internal lining, making it extra-practical as well as stylish. It also individually waterproofs your different items in the bug out bag. After figuring out what your priority equipment is, the next step is organizing stuff in your bag.
A general rule would be to keep all non-emergency and bulky items at the bottom of your pack and close to your back. Tents and sleeping bags can be kept at the bottom and water can be placed in the pack closer to your back.
