According to recent studies, Freshman students were found to gain 15 pounds in their Freshman year, did you or are you putting on weight in your Freshman year? Statistics show that college students on average gain 3 to 10 lbs during their first 2 years in college. Starting College can lead to many new temptations, it may be the first time that you have lived away from home and you are now responsible for making your food choices and controlling your portions. But how can you avoid not getting fat or not to allow yourself to go overboard and be labelled as having this ‘Freshman 15’. Eat healthy snacks during late night sessions. If you must eat when up late studying eat nutritious snacks such as plain popcorn (no butter or salt), fruits, pretzels, nuts and nutritious bars.
Often called Potassium Sticks, bananas are a great snack throughout the day and before or after a workout. Sometimes those cravings for a snack aren’t induced by hunger, but rather boredom or habit. Cheese gets a bad reputation as a fattening snack, but if you choose a cheese made from skim or 2% milk you lower fat content significantly without drastically reducing the protein that keeps you feeling full longer. Bread gets a bad reputation because most breads are highly processed and don’t provide much nutritional benefit. Baked potatoes are not inherently fattening, it all the sour cream, butter and cheese added that makes them fattening. Trail mix is relied upon by hikers to provide them with long lasting, healthy energy, and in everyday life if offered the same kind of benefits. As a Registered Dietitian, I’m constantly asked what changes people can make for a healthier lifestyle. Each weekend, I make it a goal to head to the kitchen and prepare some food to make the upcoming week a little easier. If you want to give this a try but you’re not sure where to start, check out the inspiration series to search through over 100 weekly posts where I share the food I prepped. Every Sunday, I’ll post a roundup of the photos I received that week so that you guys can see what others are preparing and hopefully get some inspiration and ideas.
While you’re there, you can also check out some of my other boards for healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack ideas! I know, we are all very concerned about our skin and want it to look the best at all times, but sometimes things don’t work the way we wish them to!!

First things first, Never skip your three step skin care- which is obviously cleansing, toning and moisturizing followed by a sunscreen (you cannot ever miss it)!! Also, if you are not really fond of the gym, opt for tennis or dance glasses or you could just go for a run at the park near your house! Trick 5# Hydration all the way: This is not the first time that I’ll be talking about the importance of hydration.
Trick 6# Keep Calm and Relax: Our bodies need a cycle of dark and sunlight to keep the body functions in sync with one another. There are people who say they want to take better care of themselves and live a healthy lifestyle.
If you notice, this list does not have chips, sodas, chocolates, beer, and processed meat in this list. I'm not a chef, but we're here to have honest, objective conversations about food with you. It is seen that most of this weight gain took effect during the first semester of freshman year. Your mom always said “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and it is! Try to avoid drinking soda and juice as your main drink, have these occasionally with a meal. When it’s time to reward yourself for a job well done- go ahead and eat what you like BUT don’t go overboard. Run, jog, walk, bike, do aerobics and other routines that would help you maintain regular circulation of body fluids and thus helps you to digest the food you have eaten.

Mainly because the unhealthy snacks are easily accessible in vending machines, convenience stores and cafeterias, where as healthy snacks typically need to be brought from home.
They are low in fat and full of fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Manganese, and, of course, Potassium. Not only are they naturally sweet for those sugar cravings, but they are also low in fat and high in vitamins and antioxidants. A great way to avoid eating additional unneeded calories is to chew on some sugar-free gum.
Baby carrots are always a popular choice because they require essentially no prep time, but don’t feel limited to that. Breads that are good for your include whole wheat, whole grain, pumpernickel, and others that don’t use white flour. It is filling, low in fat and cholesterol, and high in dietary fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Potassium. Instead of drowning the kernels in butter and salt, try just sprinkling a non-salt seasoning mix on them or even a bit of chili and lime spices. A small baked potato can make an excellent healthy snack when topped with salsa or even spaghetti sauce. Make your own mix at home by swinging by the bulk food section of your grocery store and getting some unsalted almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and some unsweetened dried fruit.
Every Sunday, I showcase what I prepared the previous weekend, plus several reader submissions in my Sunday Food Prep Inspiration series! It dives into detail about how to food prep, troubleshoots common problems and provides tons of tips to make it easier and less overwhelming. I’ll keep this series going for as long as I receive photos, so send one every week if you want to! We put in the best of our efforts to make it look radiant and glowy, but is all that enough!!?
Let’s give our skin that boost it needs and most often it is the simplest of measures that work wonders!!
Do not get carried away with the TV commercials you see, instead take some time out to analyze your skin type and get products accordingly, that way, you will have your own beauty secret in your kitty! When you massage it in your skin in circular motions, it will boost up the circulation into the highest gear!! Making some space in your bag for a facial mist, or just carry some facial wipes to help you refresh whenever you are out and about and need an instant fix!! Indulge in red colored food- Every morning try grabbing a bunch of red colored foods and vegetables, which include, strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, berries, apples and beets, as they are rich in anti-oxidants and will help in giving you a brighter and radiant complexion!
Feed your skin with some omega-3 – Omega-3 is great for skin and health and I’m sure everyone is aware on how amazing it is.
A good workout does not just burn off that extra fat and calories, it also helps in delivering nutrients and oxygen to the skin. The goal is to keep yourself moving, and if nothing works or you just do not find anything appealing, just hang your head from the corner of your bed down and hold the position for thirty seconds before you come back up. Sipping on a glass of water prior to each meal will ensure that you have a glowing supple skin. Sleeping before mid-night will help in orchestrating the body functions and will also help in preventing wrinkles!! Even if you are not having a good day or your feeling low, just smile all your worries away!! Sometimes, all you need is to adapt to some changes in your lifestyle that will make all the difference in the world.
I usually dry roast flaxseed, grind them and add it to the dough (atta) or sprinkle it in the veggies. We offer honest, objective conversations about food because we want you to enjoy delicious meals all the time.
Doctors are concerned that college students who gradually increase their weight are establishing a weight gain pattern that may lead to a lot of health problems if they do not look to do something about it. Some people choose to give themselves one day a week, where they are allowed to eat anything, but remember everything in moderation!
They also help keep your blood sugar levels from spiking and falling, by slowly releasing the sugars they contain. The creamy, sweet flavor is great for those craving a sweet snack without all the added sugars of a candy bar.

Toss a few raspberries, blueberries and strawberries together for a delicious, snack that you’ll love.
Make snacking easy by washing and slicing several days worth of cucumbers, bell peppers, jicama, broccoli, etc.
These good breads contain good levels of dietary fiber, are considered complex carbohydrates that keep your blood sugar levels stable, and provide you with important nutrients like Manganese and Selenium.
They are full of great nutrients and minerals like Vitamin A, Calcium and Iron as well as dietary fiber.
Air popped popcorn is great for those who are habitual nibblers because the serving size is surprisingly large when it is butter free, allowing for longer munching.
They are easy to make in a microwave or oven and keep you feeling full and satisfied long after you’ve finished.
Snacking tends to get a bad reputation for causing weight gain, but those that snack smart know first-hand how it can help support weight loss.
I firmly believe that setting myself up for success on the weekend plays a major part of my ability to eat healthy during the week.
Nevertheless, I always suggest opting for a facial mist because it is really convenient to use, you just need to spray it on and the best part is it won’t budge your make-up! It is one of the most beneficial supplement that you can include in your diet to have a beautiful skin.
No matter how busy your schedule is, try to take some time out for working out at least three to four times per week, great circulation results in a beautiful and glowing skin!
I cannot stress enough on the importance of drinking at least ten glasses of water every day, if you haven’t made it your habit yet, start today!!
The key to not looking tired is not being tired and for that you need to discipline yourself and your complexion will automatically glow. Cuddle with your partner, read your favorite books, meet friends that you haven’t seen in a long time or just get a rejuvenating massage, anything that will get that smile on your face will make your skin glow like nobody’s business!!! Let us help you improve your relationship with food.We write about recipes, restaurant reviews, specialty coffee, and a lot more.
Dates are full of natural sugars, which makes them a wonderful pick-me-up, but don’t over indulge. I don’t say that you completely give up on your most favorite foods, just minimize the amount of intake!! If you don’t have the omega-3 supplement, there isn’t a need to worry, you’ll always have Almond!
So, now you have a good excuse to reach out to the glass of wine, but do not drink more than one glass. Sleeping seven to eight hours is a must because sleep can get you amazing results that no facial creams can mirror. Many dietitians say that healthy snacking between meals can help you avoid over indulging at meals and encourage overall weight loss.
Extra bonus unlike candy, dates won’t get you lectures from your dentist because they actually help strengthen your enamel. You want to choose a plain yogurt, so you can control the sugar content and avoid any unnecessary things like added color or artificial flavor. That’s the thought running through our head at all times, and we get lured into buying creams and lotions believing the claims they make!!
They are rich in omega 3 and vitamin E, which are both considered a boon in skincare as they promote healthier skin making it look plump and younger. Wine is not for everyone though, so you can always reach out for our good ol’ green tea or coconut water, they are both amazing for the skin and overall health!
Try to keep your nightly skin routine as minimal as possible, just go for a good eye cream and a nourishing night cream to keep your skin refreshed. So for ingredients not on the list, try to use your better judgement and get ingredients that are low amounts of sodium, fat, and sugar.
