Let's start by acknowledging that effective communication within an organization, regardless of size is both essential and difficult. My first formal lesson in communication came from a book I read by Ruth Portillo on five communication levels with the first level being the most superficial and the fifth level being the most intimate. When trying to communicate a message to the most people, most organizations use written communication. We should put a lot of thought into what is most important to communicate and if it is most important we should try to communicate those concepts in the most effective way, face to face combined with written. Communication that is less important can be done by phone and the least important communication can be written.
With information about sensitive issues you will want to start out with a face to face conversation and depending on the information gathered you might need to document it in writing.
Communicating compliance issues could also be considered sensitive and should be communicated in a manner similar to the above since compliance issues can result in disciplinary action and you should also provide employees an anonymous means of communicating their compliance concerns.
Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something. To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others. Take advantage of every opportunity to practice your communication skills so that when important occasions arise, you will have the gift, the style, the sharpness, the clarity, and the emotions to affect other people. A man's character may be learned from the adjectives which he habitually uses in conversation.
Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill. Good communication is just as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.
Lawyers spend the majority of their time communicating – writing emails, briefs, letters, agreements, talking, negotiating, running or attending meetings, training,  – the list goes on.


Be clear and concise, using specific examples, recommendations, statements, and observations. Use follow-up open ended questions to make sure your communicated idea was understood as you meant it to be understood. Prepare an agenda for all meetings and follow it so that you cover what needs to be covered succinctly and efficiently.  If you follow a well thought out agenda you won’t waste your client’s time and money. Choose the right time for your intended communication.  Timing of a difficult conversation or delivery of an email can make an important difference to the outcome.

Families provide children with their very first view of the world, so parents should do all that they can to show their children that their feelings and opinions matter, a lesson that they will take with them once they are grown and on their own.
