Many will question my choice to “spend” one of my Cinapse Pick of the Week slots (which I’ve now just rebranded as an editorial altogether) on a Hughes Brothers directed, Denzel Washington-starring apocalyptic action film which was received with mixed critical response and has made nary a dent on our cultural consciousness since. This book isn’t so mysterious at all, and that is another element which seemed to throw audiences of when they saw Eli. So the presence of God in the context of this movie immediately raises a lot of eyebrows, and turns a large contingent of people right off. But again, these action sequences seemed to be routinely rejected by audiences for one astounding and spoilery reason: At the end of the film, and I mean at the very end, it is revealed that Eli has been blind for the entire duration of the movie. When the multiple twists occur at the end of the film, Eli’s blindness only being one of them, I found myself in a unique place of appreciating every element of the movie, even when many audience members found themselves shaking their heads in frustration, perhaps feeling cheated, or at the very least feeling smarter than the film they were watching. So at this point, the reveal of Eli’s blindness is giving me goosebumps because the script has given me everything I need to buy in, AND I adore the implications it casts on all the earlier sequences.
I’ve outlined a number of hurdles that The Book Of Eli asks the everyday viewer to jump through in order to fully enjoy the film. God’s portrayal in The Book Of Eli is interesting, because He seems to be continuing in His infuriatingly mysterious ways.
The Zatoichi comparison isn’t a perfect one, being that Ichi was truly a wanderer, with no specific destination in mind. Ed changed careers and moved halfway across the country from Maryland to Austin with his amazingly understanding wife just to figure out how to earn a living watching movies. Dear Lord, thank you for giving me the strength and the conviction to complete the task you entrusted to me. After following up with Dead Presidents (1995) they directed the feature length documentary American Pimp (1999). Eli is ready to kill and ready to die to protect the book he believes he’s been given byGod to carry west. In this scene we see the main character Eli with his companion Solara in what looks like an abandon silo , sitting around a fire.
In this scene the director has close up shots on Solara when she is talking, but when Eli is moving or is talking it’s shot from further out. 04:26 Book Of Eli - Ring My Bell            In the movie the book of Eli, Eli is blind. Freymann, ISawItIn Editors A few folks spotted this cool vacation style bag that Meryl Streep carried in this scene from It's Complicated.
Hell, even the title of this article is spoilery if you are geeky enough to be familiar with both 2010’s The Book Of Eli and the enormous series of Japanese films from the 1960s and 1970s featuring a wandering swordsman named Zatoichi. But I want to note a number of elements which make The Book Of Eli stand out as a flawed but ambitious piece of entertainment worthy of reevaluation. But regardless of what you believe personally, I’d argue that God’s presence in the film is sound in its internal logic, and if you have no desire to engage in a story suggesting the existence of God, you could simply flip a switch and think of God as The Force or The Matrix, and continue on the journey west. A blind, wandering samurai who happens upon a town, gets involved in helping the innocents there, and ultimately has to fight the corrupt powers before he can continue westward (into the sunset). Upon multiple repeat viewings, Denzel appears to be regularly using his eyes in the way a sighted person would just as many times as he appears to touch and sense things like perhaps a blind person would. It is as though this guy we’ve been watching is twice as badass as he was before because he was straight jackin’ fools while totally blind. And perhaps Eli was never going to please a wide swath of filmgoers who either get turned off by the religious elements, the violence, the mixture of both, or who simply felt cheated by a twist that didn’t work for them. Like, if He really does exist, why allow the world to be destroyed, and all of the copies of His word to be burned?
They began making movies at age 12, but their official film education began their freshman year of high school when Allen decided to take a TV production class.
Albert was born nine minutes earlier, he was hired to direct the 2005 horror-thriller Hide and Seek (2005) but backed out before production began because of the budget.
Carnegie believes that the words of the bible will somehow provide him with another, less messy methods of control. Here we see Eli attempting to read a book that he has been carrying along west for thirty years. The movie has some biblical principles in it, and so if you’re a person that reads the Bible, there was an Eli in the bible who also was blind. A carcass lies rotting on the ground and half-starved hairless cat climbs over it and begins nibbling at its feet.
When Carnegies sees this he beats Claudia until Solara tells him what the book Eli was holding looked like.
Set in an American west which is covered in the hot, dirty wind of an ill-defined apocalypse, Eli brandishes a sword, espouses a code of honor, and wanders always west… duty bound on a quest from his Master. We’ve got more than enough reason to be uncomfortable these days with a hero who claims to be guided by a spiritual force, especially a hero who engages in violence. And audiences everywhere felt the need to congratulate themselves on guessing this “twist” and being smarter than the movie, when in fact, the film has many more secrets to reveal than that. Shot with style, assurance, long unbroken takes, and largely featuring Denzel himself in all of the sword and gun melees, I’d argue that the smattering of action set pieces timed perfectly throughout the film are reason enough to check it out.
Yes, all the way at the end of the movie, it is revealed that not only is The Book Of Eli a samurai film, but it is in fact a Western, twist-filled Zatoichi remake. Then, when I’m already feeling those goosebumps and thinking back to all the moments I saw earlier in the film, the realization dawns on me that The Hughes Brothers and Gary Whitta, along with star and producer Denzel Washington, have secretly resurrected my beloved Blind Swordsman Zatoichi and made him into a Western hero that can only be talked about in whispers behind the protection of a spoiler warning… because this is a secret Zatoichi. But I’ve also outlined the clear reasons why the twists and turns of The Book Of Eli work like a charm on me, and why I think they actually do succeed as a twist that doesn’t cancel out or devalue any of the rest of the film with its revelations.

Why let it come down to his one guy carrying the last copy of The Bible to somewhere out West where it’ll be re-integrated into a budding new society?
And since Ichi’s blindness is known to all, there’s a dynamic throughout the series of his being underestimated by his opponents.
As a person of faith who wrestles with God as much as I take solace in Him, the film’s portrayal of God intrigued and engaged me. Shortly after they made a short film called How To Be A Burglar and this was when men people started noticing them. Denzel trained for four to six months.  Started out with stretching and moving and stuff with the eyes closed and trying to get into the whole vibe. Look at Malcolm X whbo went from hatred to a whole complete different doctrine, or Hurricane Carter . The bible was a big part in a war that caused a nuclear holocaust thirty years earlier that led to an effort to destroy all remaining copies.
Since only the older people know how to read the bible, Carnegie realizes that he can use the bible as a tool against weak minded and desperate people.
It makes the audience respect the character more and in a small way relate to what he is going through a little more.
This scene is crucial to the movie because for the fist time to anyone Eli tells them what the book is and why it is so important, and for the first time Solara gets an insight to Eli’s physical and spiritual life. This is called the dark bright technique using strong contrast employed to agitate the audience. Carnegie asks Eli to stay so he could use his fighting skills to keep control over the town.
But The Book Of Eli’s screenwriter Gary Whitta (attached to write an upcoming Star Wars entry, and a tried and true “one of us” type nerd) builds a fairly defined world in which to tell Eli’s story of a mission from God.
Believed to be the last Bible on Earth, Eli will sacrifice his humanity to protect it, and the villainous Carnegie (Gary Oldman) will stop at nothing to use its “power” to rule the wasteland. Seriously: Watching Denzel step into the shadow of a dilapidated highway overpass to dispatch of a small crowd of raiders in a single take silhouette is about as cool a fight scene as I could ever ask for. We here at Cinapse have written extensively about the wandering blind swordsman who is unknown to most US filmgoers today, but who is perhaps one of cinema’s all time greatest heroes. Those are the kinds of questions that beg to be thought about after the credits role, and which Whitta isn’t obliged to answer in the runtime of the film. Eli is treated as a threat throughout, though perhaps occasionally underestimated simply due to being alone against a sea of villains. And then my geek-dar just shot through the stratosphere when the Zatoichi revelation hit me.
Eli is a man who has strength to fight and survives all by himself on many different struggles on a long journey. Their next work, Uncensored videos was broadcast on cable, this introduced them to a broader audience. Denzel says that when you are young you don’t realize how important stretching is, but when you get older its really important.  Washington says “I don’t do it enough, but it helps a lot.
Even something as dark as Training Day, the first thing I wrote on me script was, “The wages of sin is death.” In the original version of Training Day , they had Denzel dying in the smallest way. Eli doesn’t know what to expect when he gets to his destination, he just knows that he is called to carry the book. Carnegie is not so different from thePharisees and some of the medieval Popes in the church.
Solara really wants to know what the book is and why it is so important to Eli and her father. Eli explains to Solara the entire story as to why he is headed West, he tells her that he heard a voice as clear as he is hearing her talk to him tell him that he had to take the book West. Lighting in films is manipulated to arouse what emotions must be felt on a particular scene and help build tension. Halfway through the movie when Eli is walking on the bridge Eli could hear Carnegie’s men coming on their motorcycles .  Later in the movie when Eli and Solara are at the old couples house he could hear the cars coming long before the others could.
This is because the men on the road weren’t shooting at Eli and so Eli didn’t know the men were there because he couldn’t see them. Whatever caused this apocalypse is undisclosed, but it becomes clear that religion was blamed and holy books the world over were burned and now religion and even any sense of the former world’s technology has been all but forgotten by the mostly youthful population left on the planet.
And when we covered every single one of those films this past year, I couldn’t shake the desire to write about The Book Of Eli.
The Book Of Eli does leave some questions unanswered, and they are the best kinds of questions. It may never hit you in quite the same way, but I do encourage a re-watch of The Book Of Eli with some of these arguments in mind.
The movie is really exciting because it has an apocalyptic-tale to it in which Eli, is the only righteous man left on the planet.
He brings the book out every night and that’s when he reads it, other than that he keeps the book hidden from sight in his backpack . Carnegie acts like he knows it all and he did, but just like the Pharisees in the bible Carnegie is really arrogant and wanted to look better and smarter than everyone. Claudia ends up being the only person Eli shares the bible, and explains why he believes it is important is restoring civilization. Eli doesn’t want to tell Solara what the book is and the power it has, but he eventually does.

The figure behavior of Eli is content, maintaining minimal moving throughout the film to stay undetected and hidden. It starts off with us just hearing Eli telling his story to Solara, and the sound of the fire crackling in the back.
Like most blind people Eli’s other senses were intensified because he didn’t he have sight. When Eli and Solara find the old couples house Eli kick the first step because he didn’t know there were stairs there. Eli (Denzel Washington ) walks over to the cat, pulls out the arrow and bags it up for dinner. The women asks for help, but Eli calls out the thugs that were hiding nearby, he tells them that he can smell them.
In this world, Eli is an old man, forcing himself to disengage from humanity in order to carry his “mysterious” book west, as the voice is guiding him to do.
Regardless of these variations, I believe Eli still fits into the Zatoichi mold, and serves as a much more fascinating western remake of the character than the fun but silly Blind Fury (starring Rutger Hauer, 1989), which I’d also like to cover someday on Cinapse just to get every last ounce of Zatoichi writing out of my system that I possibly can.
Two shorts recognized the twins reputation as advanced filmmakers and allowed them to direct Menace 11 Society (1993), which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and grossed nearly 10 times as much as its $3 million budget.
The way he carries the bible is like the Ark of the Covenant the Israelites had to transport.
Eli puts the book down and starts saying some scriptures, here we realize that the book he has been carrying along for so long is a Bible . To be able to pull this off the costume designers found an Oakley’s current style tactical backpack, with many straps and compartments. This suggests that he doesn’t want to drag attention the attention to himself and prefers to be alone. As El is going on with his story you slowly here this glorified music creeping in as he is talking.
After the fight in the Old couples house Eli waves his knife around, but didn’t fight because he couldn’t tell where the men were.  They weren’t shooting or talking or moving so he had no idea how to fight them. The leader of the gang start pushing Eli around, wanting to rob him; Eli gives him one warning, he doesn’t listen to him, Eli suddenly cuts off the leaders hand with a machete . He recognizes that Claudia is blind and asks her if she was blind her whole life or blinded by the flash, an event that occurred during the last Great War. Regardless of whether one thinks this is bogus or not, it works in much the same way that being inside of The Matrix does cinematically. There are a lot of actions and it has many good life guidelines in which we should live by. In the Christian belief Claudia is the name of Pontius Pilate’s wife, who has a dream that Jesus is innocent and pleads with her husband to free him. The music builds up and becomes intensified as Eli adds more courage and believes in what he is telling Solara. In the beginning of the Eli is about to get jumped by Carnegies bandits , but he smells them and says “One good thing about no soap anymore. Carnegie thinks that the Bible’s righteous scripture is the best to keep the town under control. Eli is able to do miraculous (and excellently staged and shot) things with swords and guns because his abilities are supernatural. Claudia enjoys the benefit of relative and random luxury because of her relationship with Carnegie, but she is the voice that requests for him to be more caring.
If you pay close attention throughout the movie you will notice that Eli is mostly framed upwards shots to show power. At the end the Director puts non-diegetic music into the scene to embellish our understanding of his story and his passion.
You can smell the road agents a mile off.” When he was in the woods he didn’t shoot the wild cat until he heard it meow.
He then walks over to the leader and kills him, robs the bodies of their valuables and walks away, continuing his journey West.
Carnegie orders one of his men to shoot at Eli as he is walking away, but he misses him twice. Later in the movie, we find out the Claudia is the only person that can read and understand Eli’s book. Carnegie thinks the best way to keep Eli in town is have Solara, Claudia’s daughter, sleep with Eli. She wears the shirt with a ratty fur lined vest, and a pair of Paige demin jeans and some green boots.
Eli doesn’t want to sleep with Solara, but she begs him to stay the night because she knows Carnegie will harm Claudia. Solara discover the book of Eli’s bed and gets excited, wanting to know more about it, even though she doesn’t know how to read, Eli won’t let her look at the book.
