Over the last two years, global demand figures for solar PV have been dampened by sharp reduction of new installations in the erstwhile leading markets of Western Europe. The market analysis firm also expects that 2014 is the year when top (tier one) manufacturers will return to full profitability after years of barely making any returns. This would sound like a good coincidence since most household appliances such as electronics all require DC electricity to run. However, electronic appliances at home have inbuilt regulators which convert the AC electricity back to DC format. It is however worth noting that the only useful rays for production of electricity are the infra red rays from the sun. Of the light reaching the earth's surface from the moon, a very insignificant proportion comprises UV rays.
In particular, sodium lamps which are considered very efficient because they convert just about all the electricity they receive to visible light, cannot stimulate solar cells to produce electricity. By conventional practice, it is considered that solar panels installed with a due south orientation will ensure maximum sunlight is harvested throughout a year. The chief reason identified by the researchers is that solar panels facing west in Austin can reduce peak electric generation demand on the grid during summer months. Moreover, of the electricity generated during those peak demand hours, 80% of it was consumed in the homes and only 20% was sent back to the utility grid.
Many environmental campaigners were at first delighted by this development but as Obama's first term drew to a close without a sign of the shiny fixtures appearing anywhere on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, despondency started settling in.
