In my personal case, I have found the main source of the issue to be generally having an iCloud account setup. If you are willing to dig around a bit, grab one of the apps below, and keep an eye on your memory usage, running tasks, and activity logs. Activity Monitor Touch is probably the best looking of the bunch of iPhone debugging apps I’ve seen so far.
NetRapport is an interesting app that focuses on process info and system tools and skips all the charts and graphs.
System Status is another super useful $0.99 app for finding process information on your iPhone.
Inform8 is an iPhone utility app that also shows you a list of running processes along with their uptime.
System manager is another simple and effective utility app for getting info about your iPhone’s internals, including a memory bar and graph on the front page. AppSwitch is another well designed utility app for debugging and finding frozen processes on your iPhone. Before we get to the results, let's talk a little bit about what we should see architecturally.
NVIDIA originally told me that the Cortex A9 was more power efficient than the A8 it replaced. Here we have two hypothetical CPUs, one with a max power draw of 1W and another with a max power draw of 1.3W.
The comparison becomes more complex when you take into account there are two Cortex A9s in Apple's A5 SoC vs.
Power at idle and during application launches was pretty much unchanged between the two devices, which is to be expected. Even though the 3G results are skewed by an unrealistic amount of caching, the CPU still has to work to render and display each page.
There is one caveat to web browsing battery life: the 4S will only last longer if you do the same amount of work on it.
Infinity Blade is a GPU intensive 3D game, which obviously causes the GPU transistors to fire up on both SoCs.
Our tethered test gives us a good idea of how quickly the 4S will die under moderate cellular data load.
It is surprising that despite the peak power advantages above, we didn't see any improvement in our WiFi hotspot test. Based on our data, concerns about the iPhone 4S' battery life seem unrelated to hardware.
Moving forward, I wouldn't be too surprised to see battery life remain around this level for the near future without significant advancements in battery or process technology. The numbers were incorrect and have been updated, the 4S is ~2x faster than the GS2 on the GLBenchmark Pro. When a new iOS version is released, the spotlight always shines the brightest on the shiny, brand-new hardware that ships with it. The slowest devices in Apple's lineup tend not to get every single feature that the newer ones get.
Panorama mode or Filters in the Camera app (filters can still be applied after-the-fact in the Photos app). One thing to note about iOS 7 on the iPhone 4 is that it looks slightly different than it does on most other supported devices. Otherwise, all the good stuff about iOS 7 is here: the updated apps, the useful Control Center feature, and all the underlying security updates, technologies, and APIs that made it into iOS 7 are available.
The bad news is that the A4 struggles to render iOS 7's sweeping new animations consistently.
As we did last year, we also launched a number of the built-in apps in both iOS 6 and iOS 7 and timed them to see whether there were any regressions. Everything is slower in iOS 7, usually by one to one-half second or so but sometimes by more. Once you've actually opened your app, things don't feel too much worse than they did in iOS 6.
When it comes to launching apps, the iPhone 4's general slowness is only exacerbated by the too-long animation durations in iOS 7. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used, except with the prior written permission of Conde Nast. Over 900 entries have already been posted to the Apple Support forums complaining about the iPhone 4S battery life, and no real magic solution has been found so far. I have noticed that removing the iCloud account all together, does in fact stop the quick battery discharging, although this is not an optimal solution. The app has a polished design and the process tab shows tasks along with their icon for built in apps, priority, and PID sorted by last activity. Using the Running Processes section you’ll find a nice flat list of process names along with a total number of items. Processes are listed using an easy to read layout and native apps are shown with their own icons. The Process page is flat and simple and shows up to 8 at a time, along with available icons, runtime, PID and priority info. The main tab in AppSwitch is the Processes area which is a list of running tasks along with their PID, icon and their process name.

With the introduction of the very first iPhone I introduced a web page loading test that simply cycled through a bunch of web pages, pausing on each one to simulate reading time (I measured how long it took me to read a typical content page and used that as the reading time). As Brian already mentioned at the start of the review, battery capacity is up slightly in the iPhone 4S. This leaves the A5 SoC and the Qualcomm MDM6610 baseband as the primary influencers on power consumption.
At the core level, a single ARM Cortex A9 core is about 10 - 50% faster than a Cortex A8 at the same frequency. The A9 has a shorter, more efficient pipeline and, in the case of the A5, isn't pushing ridiculous frequencies.
ARM hasn't published a lot of data comparing the Cortex A8 to A9, but ARM has publicly stated that a single A9 core can consume 10 - 20% more power than a single A8 core. The granularity of my measurements is what makes them crude, I was limited to a resolution of 0.1W.

Since the workload remains the same between the iPhone 4 and 4S, the latter simply enjoys a performance improvement (pages load quicker) while extending battery life a bit thanks to being asleep for longer. Typically, if web pages load quicker, you end up browsing more on the faster device than you would on the slower device. The only explanation I have is that the power advantage may not be as pronounced if we're not pushing the limits of the wireless interfaces. As the screen is off and the CPU mostly idle during this test, it really just echoes the numbers we saw above.
The raw power consumption numbers show a platform that's competitive with its predecessor in most areas, only really hurting when it comes to heavy 3D workloads. As we look toward the next-generation of microprocessor architectures, they simply become more robust out-of-order designs.
The TI OMAP 4470 will use the 544 which is probably a little faster. The SGS2 is using the slower Mali 400, however it was released 6 months ago.
Thats what people will use while running games on their phone.iPhone 4S has much more pixels for GPU to draw while having much smaller screen.
That's to be expected—people who are getting ready to drop hundreds of dollars on a phone are hungry to know how the software pairs with the best that Apple currently has to offer. That said, one of the benefits of sticking with Apple's ecosystem is that your old phone will run the latest software for a few years after you buy it. Generally, this is either because the old hardware is incapable of supporting it or because the device's aging system-on-a-chip (SoC) isn't fast enough to provide a good experience. These include translucency effects throughout the OS, live wallpapers, and the parallax effect used on the Home screen. That's not half bad, given that Android-based contemporaries like Samsung's original Galaxy S or the Nexus One have to rely on the hacker community for any kind of software support at this point (and even then, it can be spotty). The numbers below measure the time between when the app icon is tapped and when the app becomes ready for user input, and each app's launch time was measured three times and averaged. These tiny delays can add up—if you unlock your phone, check your mail or messages quickly, and then put your phone away in the course of 10 or 15 seconds, that lag can become a significant percentage of the time you spend.
Scrolling occasionally stutters, but most of the delays come up when doing (relatively) 3D-intensive things like swooping around the home screen and switching and launching applications.
Apple continues to make improvements to Mobile Safari's Javascript rendering, and the iPhone 4 benefits from those optimizations just as much as the iPhone 5 does.
Our Wi-Fi browsing test loops a set of pages in Safari continuously until the battery dies, loading a new page every 15 seconds with the screen set to 50 percent brightness.
It has been their value option for a year, and in the Apple ecosystem, even people who bought a new iPhone 4 on September 9 will get at least a year's worth of updates. This is also a problem on the faster phones and tablets, but at least there you've got faster underlying hardware to keep everything moving at a steady clip. I have noticed a pretty large amount of low memory warnings show up in the Diagnostic and Usage data section on a daily basis.
The process list is uncluttered and allows for up to 9 items at a time, and best of all process updates are show instantly.
This tab also shows a CPU usage graph useful for visually seeing when your iPhone is idle and when spikes occur. The process names are made human readable by the NetRapport app, so instead of seeing BTServer, you’ll see Bluetooth Server, which is a very handy feature. The app also shows a count for total processors running, and each process is shown with its PID, PPID, Priority, and Runtime. This information window is too large however and the design of the list is large enough that you can only view 5 tasks at a time, requiring a lot of swiping up and down.
System manager is the only app that actually gives you the option to set the refresh interval for the activity monitor, which is nice.

The increase is marginal at best, on the order of 1%, meaning it shouldn't result in a tangible impact to battery life. Thankfully Apple kept frequency constant with the move to the A5 in the 4S, making this comparison a bit easier to make.
In the ARM space, the recently announced Cortex A7 offers an additional datapoint: when ARM needed a low power core, it picked an in-order design with an 8-stage pipeline. Running this completely made-up workload, the 1.3W chip completes the task in 4 seconds vs. If we assume those numbers are under max load, then the A9 simply needs to be more than 10 - 20% faster than the A8 in order to come out ahead. As we've already seen however, the average performance gain in our web page loading tests was over 30%, easily making up for the increase in power draw here.
If you do browse more on the 4S as a result of its speed improvements, battery life won't be as good as it was on the 4. Since battery capacities haven't really changed, and the 4S does draw significantly more power under heavy GPU load (even limited by Vsync), you can expect lower battery life when running GPU intensive 3D games. If you're seeing worse battery life on the 4S, the cause would appear to be software related. As we've learned from the move to multi-core on the PC side however, continued gains in single threaded performance become increasingly difficult to come by - particularly without expending a lot of energy. The primary purpose of the 544 will be to build Windows devices, whereas for non-Windows devices the 543 would suffice. I guess it will be TI's attempt off getting Microsoft to support Windows Phone on their SoC in order to supply say partners of theirs like Nokia.
Often you can grab that new software just as soon (or even sooner!) than the people who will be getting it on a new device.
This year, we're continuing that tradition by taking a good long look at iOS 7 on the iPhone 4.
The iPhone 4 gets most of the features we highlighted in our massive iOS 7 review, but there's a long list of fine print attached. To take some of the load off of its weaker hardware, Apple has turned off translucency and other graphical effects throughout the OS in favor of simpler and less taxing transparency.
More animations means more opportunities for stutter, and longer animations means that this stuttering is much more noticeable when it happens. Unfortunately at this point, it's impossible to separate the app launches from the animation durations. Christopher Breen at Macworld recently posted his findings and was able to find an issue with corrupt Contacts in iCloud that kept a process running indefinitely, which was causing battery drain on his device. Another issue I found using these activity monitoring apps was that there was an issue with the MobileMail being left open even when closed, and also failing to resume.

Process bars on the chart are also broken down into user, system, nice, and idle and color coded. Tap any process name to read more information about it including priority, description and process ID.
System Status does not refresh the process list so you have to hit a refresh button to update the list.
There is also a well designed virtual memory pie chart, storage graph, and a set of basic device details.
The test managed to do reasonably well over the years however it's getting a bit long in the tooth, especially given that mobile browsers have become more aggressive in caching content.
The additional hardware required by an OoO architecture consumes significant power, and the gains in performance aren't always enough to offset the corresponding increase in power. Perhaps the faster CPU has more cores and the workload isn't well threaded, or maybe the workload is more optimized for the slower architecture, regardless of the reason this is just as valid of a scenario. Although the former is quicker to complete the task, the fact that you're looping it indefinitely prevents its speed from ever being an advantage for battery life. I briefly contemplating inserting a multimeter in-line with the battery however I chickened out, not wanting to risk damage to my phone or review device.
If you're mostly browsing the web, the 4S should be about equal to if not slightly better than the 4. Doing so drove power consumption up, but the 4S consistently pulled less power than the iPhone 4.
Under load however, Apple is bound by the same physical realities as its competitors and the question of battery life becomes one of battery capacity divided by peak power draw. It looks like any serious 3D gaming is going to have to be tethered or at least near a power outlet. There is hope for an increase in efficiency via heterogeneous multiprocessing, but just how much that will buy us remains to be seen.
We don't have access to PowerVR's pricing, but it likely costs more due to the need to license additional technologies (e.g. Let's run through not just the list of iOS 7 features it misses out on, but also the features from previous iOS versions that it isn't privy to. It's possible that a future update will reduce the length of the animations, speeding everything up again by a bit. That said, the iPhone 4 and iOS 7 just can't quite provide an experience that's up to Apple's usual standard. I then deleted all my mail accounts and re-added them which has since seemed to fix part of the problem. Pull down on the process list and the list toggles between showing or hiding system processes in the list.
Other data provided includes a memory usage pie chart, battery status, disc usage, network and device ids, and more.
This is good in a way because it is less taxing on your battery and CPU, but not good if you expect to watch the list update automatically.
Finally a dictionary of technical terms used in the app is also provided for your reference, so that you may learn for example the difference between wired and virtual memory. System manager also has charts for flash storage, and gives you a ton of other system information.
Another way of quantifying this is to say that in the example above, over 10 seconds CPU A does 5.5 Joules of work vs. Process technology and architecture are going to become even more important over the coming years in the mobile space. Getting the IP-blocks later, but many did opt for the Mali-400 so why wouldn't they opt for the successor too? Your battery life will obviously differ from ours based on the shape that your battery is in, but as in all other supported devices, iOS 7 reduces battery life slightly compared to iOS 6 on the same hardware.
Not all users will have the same issue however, and it will eventually be up to Apple to release an iOS update to perhaps patch the evident battery bug.
System Activity Monitor is simple and it works quite well, without any frills or flashy graphics. As with other apps iOptimizer also provides a variety of other system data, battery details, and system folder locations, most of which can again be shared via email. There's still a bit of a penalty to be paid over 3G, but not nearly as much as it should be in the real world. If a faster processor consumes more power under load but can get to sleep quicker, the power savings may give it an advantage over a slower processor.
Cold boot time has also increased significantly, though I'll admit that I usually only cold boot a smartphone if I need to install an update or measure the amount of time a phone takes to cold boot. Besides not including a graphical interface this is a clean and useful iPhone monitoring app. You can view everything from Memory, page usage, CPU info, hardware features, iOS data, uptime, and more. The test data is still valid, it's simply no longer representative of real world web browsing battery life, but rather a more academic look at very light (but continuous) smartphone usage. System Status has a built in System Log viewer which lets you view the internal notice, debug, error, and warning logs from the iPhone within the app itself. It would also be nice if a CPU usage graph was shown on the same screen as the process page, as is done in the System Activity Monitor app below.
Brian Klug devised a hotspot test that really stresses the cellular baseband of these phones by constantly streaming content over the Internet, via the phone being tested, to a tethered notebook. While Android vendors might opt for the older A9500 still.Interesting to see how Nvidia do lag in this field though. Between our hotspot, web browsing and call tests we should be able to get a good idea of the overall performance of the iPhone 4S on battery. No dice.Tthen he had a clever idea: what if I restored the iPhone 4S with battery drain issues using the backup of the one with no battery problems, and vice versa?
It also seems to explain why some users have reported that complete wipes of their iPhone 4S without restoring from a backup after sometimes solve the problem. In other words?
I bought my phone with IOS5 on it, used zero back up from any apple product and I watched my batter go from 72% to 39% in 3 hours using only text messaging.
