The debut of Toyota’s new Yaris Hybrid-R concept car at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show represents the Japanese automaker’s first foray into the world of high-performance hybrids for road car applications. Sadly, that production car is a Yaris hatchback, and it’s strictly a concept for now, but the technology featured in it hints at great things to come from the automaker in terms of performance-oriented hybrid road cars.
As previously reported, the Yaris Hybrid-R concept's drivetrain combines a turbocharged and direct-injected 1.6-liter four-cylinder built by TMG with two electric motors to form a through-the-road all-wheel-drive system.
A button on the concept’s steering wheel allows the driver to select between “Road” and “Track” modes. Designers have also added plenty of unique touches to make the Yaris Hybrid-R concept stand out from the regular Yaris lineup. Inside, there are Recaro bucket seats, Alcantara trim and sport pedals lifted from the Toyota GT 86 (Scion FR-S).
However, the Yaris Hybrid-R concept takes this technology one step further, by utilizing the same principle but in a reverse way. While the Yaris Hybrid-R concept isn’t destined for production, many of its technologies and visual elements will appear on performance-oriented hybrid models from Toyota. Through continuous improvement, Toyota has boosted the fuel efficiency of the Prius, especially the highway mileage. The Citroen C6 came with HUD as standard-fit way before BMW offered it as an extra-cost option.
The biggest obstacles to electric cars is the cost and capacity of batteries, which has been the case for over a century. Cutaway of Toyota Prius showing (1) engine, (2) hybrid Synergy inverter, and (3) high voltage battery pack.
Hybrids are proving to be quite popular with motorists because of the improved fuel economy they deliver. A hybrid vehicle is essentially the same as any other vehicle except for the extra high-voltage hybrid hardware.
The main difference between all hybrids and other vehicles is that high-voltage hybrid battery, which is usually mounted in the rear of the vehicle.
The hybrid batteries that are used in current generation vehicles are nickel metal hydride (NiMH) and consist of many individual cells wired together in series. Hybrids still have an ordinary 12-volt battery for powering the ignition system, fuel pump, lights and other electrical accessories on the vehicle.
No special precautions are required when replacing most maintenance or repair parts on the non-hybrid components in the vehicle. High voltage cables in hybrid vehicles are usually color-coded to warn you of their potential danger. The procedure for isolating the hybrid battery varies depending on the vehicle, but typically involves flipping a switch on the hybrid battery pack or disconnecting a battery cable or fuse.
When the key is in the ignition (or the keyless entry fob is inside the car), and the Power button is pushed on a Toyota Prius, a Ready light on the dash comes on.
One question many people who own a hybrid or who are thinking about buying a new or used hybrid have is the durability of the hybrid battery. So far, the hybrid batteries have proven to be extremely reliable and trouble-free, which is a good thing because (1) the hybrid batteries are only available from car dealers, and (2) they are very expensive. On a Prius, there is a special jumper connection under the power distribution center cover in the engine compartment. NOTE: The MasterTech scan tool is currently the best aftermarket scan tool for working on Honda and Toyota hybrids.
If a problem occurs with something that is not part of the hybrid system, diagnostics is essentially the same as on any other vehicle.
As for faults that involve the hybrid system (things like the car won't start, it stalls or does not run right, battery problems, etc.), you need to be up to speed on hybrid technology, and have access to the factory service information (see OEM technical websites). To access the onboard diagnostics you need a scan tool such as the MasterTech with up-to-date software that can access most of the PIDs and self-tests that are available on the Toyota factory scan tool. Like other manufacturers, Toyota provides detailed diagnostic charts for all their fault codes. Toyota has been racing a hybrid Le Mans prototype for the past two years but this is the first time the automaker is demonstrating the technology developed for the race-winning prototype in a road car. The setup also makes use of a super capacitor to harvest and store energy, just like Toyota’s current TS030 Hybrid Le Mans prototype. This third unit is located between the engine and six-speed sequential transmission and acts as a generator, drawing power from the engine during low load situations and converting it to electricity for later use.

Track mode makes full use of available performance, with the rear electric motors able to deliver peak power for five seconds before the capacitors need to be topped up.
These include newly designed headlights, LED detailing, a wider front grille and black and blue details that contrast with the white body color.
At the rear, a spoiler is mounted on the roof and the bumper incorporates a large diffuser with an exhaust pipe framed by two air extractors. Grooved and perforated brake discs are gripped by six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear.
Also borrowed from the GT 86 is the CAN-Gateway ECU system that allows drivers to download onto a USB or smartphone racing data collected while driving on the track.
These will be grouped under a new Hybrid-R sub-brand and the first could very well be a successor to the legendary Supra sports car. When the first Toyota Prius arrived in 2000, battery life and safety in crashes were concerns, as was resale value.
In 2008, new hybrid models included the Saturn Aura Green Line, Lexus LS600h, Mazda Tribute, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Dodge Durango hybrids. By reducing the on time of the engine and using battery power as much as possible for low speed stop-and-go city driving, hybrid vehicles can achieve impressive fuel economy numbers. The hybrid versions of the Chevy and GMC sport utility vehicles get 25 to 30% better fuel economy than their conventional counterparts. If you think a shock from a spark plug wire is bad, a shock from one of these batteries can kill you in a split-second! To protect the vehicle's occupants and service technicians from the high-voltage hazard, the hybrid power circuit is heavily insulated and is usually color-coded orange.
But in the case of the Toyota Prius, the 12-volt battery uses an oddball post configuration that is smaller than standard posts, and the battery is located in the trunk. But if any repair work involves hybrid electrical or powertrain components, the hybrid battery must be disconnected prior to touching anything that might carry high voltage to prevent shock hazards. On a first generation Toyota Prius, the hybrid battery is disconnected by opening the trunk, removing the liner from the left front corner, and pulling straight back on a small orange handle to remove the battery connection plug. Wearing protective rubber gloves that are rated to withstand up to 1,000 volts is also recommended for added protection. If the key is OFF and the key is out of the vehicle (make sure the "READY" light if off), the hybrid system is powered down.
This means the hybrid powertrain is active and is ready to go, even though the engine is not running and the car is not making any noise that would indicate it is on. On a Toyota Prius, Ford Escape and other hybrids, the factory warranty on the hybrid battery and other hybrid powertrain components is eight years or 80,000 miles, or 10 years and 150,000 miles if you live in California.
Most hybrids have some type of special venting for the battery pack, which may even include a separate cabin air filter (Ford Escape, for example).
The control module should start and run the engine to maintain battery charge anytime the battery drops below a certain voltage. A 12-volt battery charger can be used to boost the regular 12-volt battery enough to start the engine (Toyota recommends using their special 12-volt charger instead of a conventional 12-volt battery charger).
You troubleshoot the fault, do your diagnostic tests to rule out various possibilities, and hopefully zero in on the faulty component that needs to be replaced.
If the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is on, plug in your scan tool to read the code(s) and any freeze-frame data that might have been captured to help you in your diagnosis. The charts include a description of the fault, the components involved, wiring diagrams and step-by-step checks that need to be made to isolate the fault.
Thus, the generator works like an advanced traction control system, redirecting torque as electric energy to the motors powering the rear wheels.
In Road mode, engine output is reduced to conserve fuel and so is the amount of energy distributed by the capacitor.
The electronic management of the car could then anticipate the driving conditions of each track, to optimise the phases of energy recovery, the operation of the traction control and the amount of energy used at each step.
The current, third generation, Prius is the highest-mpg car you can buy: 51 mpg city, 48 mpg highway (a big improvement), 50 mpg combined.
So Toyota added convenience and driver-assist technology features: head-up display, adaptive cruise control, LED headlamps, and lane departure warning and lane keep assist. Note, however, there is an alternative plug-electric business model, subscriptions (you do not own the battery, Better Place is responsible for it.
So if you see a heavy orange cable snaking under a vehicle or in the engine compartment, it is carrying the hybrid high-voltage current.

Also, do not touch any high-voltage components for at least 10 minutes after disconnecting the battery.
The battery cannot shock anyone unless they go poking around the high-voltage battery connections with bare hands or uninsulated tools.
So when the Ready light is on, the engine may suddenly start itself without warning if the hybrid battery is low and needs to be recharged. The actual design life of the battery, according to Toyota, is 15 years and more than 200,000 miles. On the Prius, there is a cooling fan for the battery inside the right rear trim panel, and two battery temperature sensors in the hybrid battery compartment. But if a vehicle is not driven very often, sits for weeks at a time in a garage, or has a problem that drains the battery or prevents the engine from running to recharge the battery, the hybrid battery can go dead. Once the engine is running, it should be left running for at least 30 minutes to recharge the hybrid battery. So you do not have to take a hybrid back to the new car dealer if the vehicle is out of warranty.
Whether you have a P0300 random misfire code or an O2 sensor code, the diagnostics would be essentially the same as on any other gasoline engine. Then, depending on what the code is, you will want to look at various related PIDs to see what is going on with the sensors and system controls.
Depending on the state of charge of the capacitor, the Yaris Hybrid-R can be operated in full electric mode for short distances, for example during stop-and-go traffic.
GPS data, longitudinal accelerations, steering angles, gear changes, engine speed, vehicle speed and even water temperature are used to reproduce a real lap of the track inside the game and which can then be played virtually.
Unlike many other hybrids that are modified gas-engine cars, when passersby see a Prius, they know you’re driving a hybrid. The roof can be a solar panel that runs a ventilation system when the Prius is parked outside on a hot, sunny day.The Prius now offers the Entune smartphone and music integration system. In fact, Toyota says the failure of the $3,000 main battery pack is virtually nil, other than mechanical failures or collision damage. Reproduction in whole or in part in any form or medium without express written permission of Ziff Davis, LLC. On a first generation 2001-2003 Toyota Prius, the hybrid battery is rated at 276 volts, and 201 volts on a second generation Prius (2004 and up). The circuit may or may not be hot even when the engine is off, so treat all orange cabling with caution.
This presents no danger to the driver because the car will not go anywhere unless it is in drive or reverse, but it could be a hazard to someone if they were working under the hood and did not realize the Ready light was on. If this happens, a special jump start procedure or charging procedure may be required to get the vehicle moving.
No attempt should be made to recharge or jump start the high-voltage hybrid battery directly. Denso is also offering hybrid training classes through their parts distributors, as are other aftermarket parts suppliers.
Problem areas that are going to require some hybrid know-how include any faults related to the high-voltage battery or charging system, any faults related to engine cranking, any faults related to the transmission, or any faults related to the hybrid control system.
All Prius models, even the $25,000 base Prius Two, have Bluetooth and a USB jack standard; Toyota is making Bluetooth and USB standard, even on its cheapest models such as the Yaris. So always make sure the Ready light is out before doing any routine maintenance or repairs.
Toyota also expanded the lineup to include a smaller model Prius C, a larger Prius V, and a plug-in hybrid Prius. He also neglected that not-so-small issue of battery costs, which are astoundingly high, according to Tesla’s prices for replacement. More likely the energy consumption will be around 2 miles per Kwhr,or 6 cents per mile, three times greater than Tesla’s ridiculous claims. And in consumer ripoff states like California and Hawaii ( 35 cents per kWhr) it actually costs more to fuel an electric car than a gas powered job at $4 per gallon.
