I think we all can agree that having the battery pack in the floor has advantages from an automotive engineering and design point of view. A battery pack in the floor lowers center of gravity for better handling, and it’s a definite advantage when it comes to opening up room inside the vehicle.
Why GM decided to stick with the EV-1 design is unknown to us but we can speculate that it offered some advantages as it gets the majority of the pack out of harm’s way in the event of a collision. 1) the main advantage would have to be extra room for the cooling system to rap around the cells a bit better – because of height. 3) it does not require the cabin to be raised above the battery and reduce head room (or raising the roof to compensate).
I think GM will stay with the T shaped battery, but there is a good possibility that the section will be removed for the rear 5th seat.
The smaller battery will also be cheaper, so this fits with GMs desire to reduce cost and selling price. Volt is designed so that most people will use all their battery range every day thus getting maximum benefit.
It would be great to have more AER but it is more important for GM to reduce the price of the Gen II Volt as much as possible so an increase is unlikely.
I also thought about the battery notch that will allow the rear bench seat to fit all three passengers. One that runs along the center spine (as it does now) between the front seats, but stopping at the rear of the front seats. This will allow the full rear bench seats with a flat floor for leg room and foot rest for the center seat.
The bodies could be many, from a simple sports coupe (like the Pontiac Solstice) to a four-door sedan, a CUV, or a pickup truck. Raymondjram: GM can keep the “skateboard” idea to unify the EREV and future BEV platforms, because it allows a single body attachment form and common suspension and electrical powertrain (motor and ) mounting point. A Volt SS would take very little new engineering and it would transform the Volt’s image for a lot of folks. On the hatchback Volt, give people, again, the option of paying for more AER, or keeping the price down by staying with 16.5 kWh and 38 or so miles of AER.

The chunkier or blockier a pack is, the easier it is to manage temperature with some kind of active system. Yet my 2009 Equinox which is FWD has a flat floor with no hump, and it does have a AWD option. Select picture or schematic to display from thumbnails on the right and click for download.

Tesla Motors on Thursday unveiled a system to swap battery packs in its electric cars in about 90 seconds, a service the company’s Chief Executive Elon Musk said will help overcome fears about the driving range of the cars. The automaker will roll out the battery-swapping stations later this year, beginning along the heavily-traveled route between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and then in the Washington-to-Boston corridor. Electric cars have been slow to catch on with consumers because of their high price, limited driving range and lack of a charging infrastructure. A battery pack swap will cost between $60 and $80, about the same as filling up a 15-gallon gas tank, Musk said.
Musk demonstrated two Model S battery-pack swaps in the time it took for a car on a screen above the stage to fill up with gas, about four minutes. It is something GM has surely thought about, but will it make it happen for the redesigned Volt? This new platform will allow a ground up redesign of the Volt’s unibody that MIGHT include a battery in the floor design. What are the issues with a floor battery pack that extends near the sides of the car that has a side impact accident?
GM has stated that their intention was to reduce the battery size as battery technology improved and keep the range at the targeted 40 miles. There are several here who want longer range, but I think those people should be prime BEV customers.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both the T-shaped and skateboard battery designs.

A better capacity (maybe 25 kWh) full sized battery with a longer (60 to 70 mile) CD range. The variable features and options could be the range extender engine and battery pack sizes.
It lowers the center of gravity and it elevates the driving position for better visibility, while allowing for a very spacious cabin on top of it. Build it with either a 16.5 kWh pack or an 18 kWh pack and tune the motors to allow for sub-7 second 0-60 speeds. Even a small improvement in the amount of pack used might give the Volt an EPA range of 40 miles, which would be very nice. Tesla has been working to address some of those issues with fast-charging stations and now with the battery-swapping technology. Drivers who choose to swap must reclaim their original battery on their return trip or pay the difference in cost for the new pack. Share this empowering narrative on your social network of choice and ask others to do the same. The redesign effort could also include an MPV unibody that everyone is asking for… or how about a Voltec mini truck design?
Since Gen 2 will include a battery with a higher energy density it will require fewer cells … so all we would have to do is put a notch in the existing T pack to accommodate a fifth seat. I’m confident GM will have the best choice for the overall advancement of the new Volt. It doesn’t have to be a rocket, just make it faster than it is now and let people enjoy the torque and stability of the Volt just a little more assertively. I have seen my Buick underneath and there is a floor tunnel that only holds the exhaust pipe.
I just don’t see how the D2XX would be compatible with a flat floor battery pack, But if GM could pull it off, that would be great!
