But if done right, a jump start is a safe and quick way to get a car with a flat battery moving again. A jump start is the name given to the act of using a charged battery, usually installed within another car, to start a car with a flat battery, using booster cables which connect one to the other.
Once the cables are connected, the flat battery draws a charge from the good one, and together with the power contributed by running the car with the good battery, this provides enough charge to get the car with the flat battery started.
From there, the alternator takes over, and providing the car is allowed to run for enough time and the battery is in good condition, this should be enough to charge the battery up again. Jump-starting a car will only work when the cause of the car’s failure to start is a flat battery, and when the battery is in good enough condition that it will still take a charge. If a car’s battery has been completely depleted, or if it is old and worn out, it might not respond to jump-starting, in which case a new battery will be required. Other mechanical problems, such as a failed starter motor or deeper problems with the engine itself, will not be solved by jump-starting.

If you can find a set that is made from 100 per cent copper – that is to say, with a copper core, rather than an aluminium core with copper cladding – then you should go for these. With a set of jump leads, you’ll also need another car with a good battery and a running engine.
Some cars will store the battery out of sight, and will instead have dummy terminals specially marked under the bonnet which will serve the same purpose as the real battery terminals. Once you know where the battery terminals are, park the working car close enough to the one with the flat battery that the leads will reach from one set of battery terminals to the other.
Then, open the bonnet or the boot, and remove any covers on the batteries so that you have access to the metal terminals. Once you’ve done this, connect the black cable to the negative terminal – marked with a minus sign – on the working battery. Then, you need to find a piece of un-painted metal somewhere in the engine bay of the car with the flat battery.
Once the cables are all connected up, it’s important to wait for a period of time so that the voltages of the two batteries can equalise – three minutes, at least. Once both cars have been left running for ten minutes, you can remove the leads, but you should turn off both engines first to reduce the risk of damage to either cars’ electronics. Once the car is up to a certain speed, the driver releases the clutch pedal, which causes the engine to rotate and starts the car. This procedure isn’t recommended for modern cars, as it can cause problems with the engine management system and, if the car doesn’t start immediately, it can also shorten the life of your car’s catalytic converter.

These are available in most motoring stores, but make sure you pick the right ones; if they aren’t thick enough for your car, they could overheat and cause a fire. They generally have less resistance, and will get your car started more quickly and with less risk.
Alternatively, you can buy a booster pack, which is a box containing a battery with jump leads already attached to it that you can charge up from a socket in your house, then connect to a flat battery to give it a boost.

Most will be under the bonnet on the passenger side, but some will have it on the driver’s side, while others will store it in the boot. Check your car’s owners’ manual first to make sure you know where the battery is, or how to use the dummy terminals.
First, connect one end of the red cable to the positive terminal – the one marked with a plus sign – on the flat battery. If you do this, the spark could ignite any hydrogen gas emitted by the battery, causing an explosion.
Then, you can start the car with the good battery, and allow it to run for a minute or two. It should fire up pretty quickly - if it doesn't, your battery might be too old or too flat to take a charge.
Disconnect the leads in the reverse order of the way you attached them, and keep the clips away from each other and the bodywork. If you can, it’s a good idea to take the car on a drive of 15-20 minutes or so, preferably including some motorway driving, to charge the battery up a bit. Just follow the instructions supplied with the pack – this will usually involve connecting up the cables to the correct terminals on the battery, and turning the unit on. It involves someone sitting behind the wheel holding the clutch pedal down, with the car in second gear, while one or two people push the car along. In other words, it’s best to jump-start the car instead, if you can, and if that doesn't work, to call for professional help. Or if there are sparks as you connect the final lead up, that could cause an explosion of the hydrogen gas within or around the battery.
It’s generally best to go for the thickest, heaviest-duty ones you can afford, as they’ll handle more if you have to jump start a car with a larger battery one day. Just make sure your hands are clear of the metal parts of the clip, and that the clip is secure. If the battery is really flat or old, you may need to leave the newer car running for a little longer. Once it's running, you should then leave both cars running for around ten minutes, allowing the flat battery to charge up. Some cars will have a specific earth point for this purpose – again, check your owner’s manual if you aren’t sure.
Keep an eye on the jump leads at this point – if they get hot, you should switch off both engines immediately and allow them to cool down before removing them.
