Cars are the second most expensive investment after the family home, a status symbol and, in some cases — just visit a major motor show — a love affair. Yet electric cars seem to polarise: people either love them or hate them, with little room for indifference.
Electric cars will change the way we travel and the close relationship many of us currently have with our cars. Electric cars can travel an average of 150km on a single charge, whereas the average daily distance driven (for any car) is just 32km.
Tesla Motors has just recently demonstrated the feasibility of long distance travel with their Model S car. Electric cars can be slow-charged from a standard power point at home or work, a process which takes about 10 hours. But there is a much faster option: they can be charged to 80% capacity in around 20 minutes at a DC fast charging station. Around 20 to 30 minutes on a DC charger is still longer than 5 minutes on a petrol pump - but the gap is closing. If one charges an electric car at home from an existing solar photovoltaic system, running it is virtually free of cost, as well as free of emissions.

Through its award-winning E-STOR technology, Connected Energy is offering a highly innovative solution to this conundrum through use of ‘second life’ EV batteries.
This can be used, for example, to store energy generated from on-site renewable generation resources such as solar panels and wind turbines, and then release it as it’s needed at a later time.
The batteries used are Renault EV batteries, chosen by Connected Energy because Renault, as EV market leader with 23,000 units sold in Europe in 2015, has expertise in the technology, its lifecycle and impact on the environment. In practical terms, as well as allowing more efficient use of energy, the system can also enable installation of rapid electric vehicle charging in sites where electricity supply would traditionally only allow slower rates.
Renault offers two concrete solutions with its electric vehicles and their batteries through E-STOR.
In June 2015, E-STOR was named winner of the innovation category in the prestigious British Renewable Energy Awards 2015, hosted by the Renewable Energy Association. Renault is a leader and pioneer in the emerging electric vehicle market and has sold electric vehicles since 2011, offering a range of 100 per cent electric cars and vans to suit most requirements.
In 2015, Renault was the best performing EV brand in Europe, with sales rising 49 per cent to 23,086 units, with a 23.6 per cent European EV market share. The European all-electric vehicle market stands at 97,687 units, up 47.8 per cent compared to 2014.
Renault has sold the most EVs between 2010 – the year the first EV was launched in Europe – and 2015, with a record of 62,228 units sold. In the UK, ZOE sales were up 102 per cent in 2015 to 2,053 vehicles, significantly outpacing the UK electric vehicle market, which was up 48 per cent (including Twizy) on 2014. The Passat Estate GTE scooped the overall Best Electric Car prize, along with winning the Best Buy ?20,000-?40,000 category.
Commenting on the decision to give ZOE the award for a third consecutive year, Jim Holder, Editorial Director, What Car? We set three Netmums bloggers challenges to see if ultra low emission vehicles worked for them. In the 29th Family Car of the Year Awards run by the Belgian automobile association VAB, journalist and family juries voted Renault ZOE R240 top in the electric vehicles category. For the 2016 edition of its Family Car of the Year Awards, the Belgian automobile association VAB specified a 30-kilometre increase in the minimum “electric power” range required for vehicles in the “electric” category. As well as running against other all-electric vehicles, Renault ZOE R240 was also competing with plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles with range extender.
With both juries (25 motoring journalists and 78 families) giving the car top ranking, ZOE R240 finished with 159 points in all, ahead of the Mercedes B250e (with 154 points) and Kia’s Soul (with 147). The professional jury of motoring journalists praised ZOE’s “roomy interior, bold design and unbeatable price”, noting that “affordable pricing and long range are making Renault electric vehicles an attractive proposition for more and more people”.
The unofficial children’s jury appreciated “the neat bodywork, the smooth ride, the comfortable rear seats, and the pretty lights”. Powered by the R240 unit, Renault ZOE boasts a range unparalleled in the all-electric segment: 240 km (NEDC standard), which is 30 km more than with the Q210 power unit. The R240 power unit also brings a 10% reduction in ZOE’s charge time under most usage conditions. Soon after I bought our Type 2 ‘granny’ cable I did some testing to see how long it would take to charge the ZOE (when set to 10 Amps, about 2.3kW). As before, at regular intervals I noted the percentage state of charge and the predicted time to complete; these are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 respectively.
The ZOE dash predicts a charge time of about 10.5 hours from a start charge of 46%, so about 23 hours for a complete charge. The ZOE is actually charging at about 6% per hour, so it should reach full charge in about 16 hours. These findings are not inconsistent with each other, and the charge time is probably about 17-18 hours. Of course, it’s obvious that this is a very slow way to charge compared to 3.5 hours on the usual home charge point (or half an hour on a rapid charger). Meanwhile, despite the slow speed of charging, I have made good use of the cable a number of times to grab a ‘top up’ while spending time visiting family. The Renault ZOE is unusual amongst electric cars in that it doesn’t come with a 13 Amp home charge lead as standard, a so-called ‘granny cable’.
I didn’t order one originally with my ZOE and for a long time was rather sceptical of the benefit of it (I guess ‘you can’t miss what you haven’t had’).
The cable turned out to be a Ratio Electric product; it has a Type 2 connector at the car end, a three-pin ‘13A’ plug at the house end, and a waterproofed electronics box a short distance from the house end.
This means that sometimes you have to awkwardly plug in at the house end, plug in to the ZOE, then dash back to the house to select the 10A setting before it times out and tries to charge at the default of 6A.
However, despite these minor issues, it has never failed to charge when connected to a good supply, and I have no regrets about purchasing it. I have now used the cable a number of times, and I intend to write further about it (and give more details of the rate of charge). Eneco subsidiary Jedlix will develop a version of its existing smart charging app, to adapt it to Renault ZOE. A pilot test carried out by Eneco in the Netherlands demonstrates that users can save up to 15% on their electricity costs by using the app. The carbon footprint of electric cars is shrinking fast, with the shift already underway toward the use of renewable energies in the overall energy mix in most countries across the world today. Renault is the pioneer of affordable all-electric vehicles, and the only carmaker to offer a full range. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is an official partner of the COP21 United Nations climate-change summit, providing a fleet of 200 Alliance electric vehicles, including 100 Renault ZOEs, to ferry delegates between Paris and Le Bourget from 30 November to 11 December 2015. The Focus EV has been on the American market since last summer, and the Energi plug-in hybrid just two weeks—only a few have reached dealers so far. Of course, the V is only approximately 20 percent of total Prius sales, which overall swamps the C-MAX. O’Donnell is Ford’s newly appointed group marketing manager for electrification, and he puts the numbers in perspective. The Focus may not be a compliance car, but right now it’s available at just 200 of Ford’s 4,000 dealers (clustered in California and other high-demand states). The C-MAX Energi is rated at 108 MPGe, so that’s going to be very attractive at $4 a gallon and above. The company, which on Thursday named Mark Fields as the new chief operating officer, with highly regarded CEO Alan Mulally to stay on through 2014, has other priorities—most urgently, fixing anemic performance in Europe. O’Donnell says the company hasn’t yet shown its public plan for an electrified Europe, but it sees “growing demand for fuel-efficient platforms” there.
This will be run by Transport for London working in partnership with Siemens who are sponsoring Source London’s entire back office function, saving hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The problem is not so much about limited range, but range in combination with a relatively long charging time. They completed the journey from Los Angeles to New York - a distance of more than 5500km - in just over 76 hours, including charging. One example is the Holden Volt, which can drive about 70km electrically on battery before switching over automatically to run on a petrol generator where longer distances are required. This, of course, requires the kind of infrastructure that is widely available for petrol cars now with petrol stations, but still only available in limited areas for electric cars. But one also has to consider the much lower running cost and almost negligible service costs over the years of ownership. Wind energy can often not be used at night due to lower energy demand and base-load requirements of conventional power plants. I don’t know if it’s generally the case, but the seat we had (a ‘Concord Lift’ about 10 years old) fitted fine so long as the respective headrest was removed from the ZOE’s back rest. Renault certainly provides the option for a third, central one, for example as part of the Luxe Pack.
A bit more investigation is required, however, to find out if all the parts required for DIY fitting are included in the standard part set – for example, the plastic liners to the tube supports (these can be seen for the existing head restraint but are not in place for the central one). Renault recently rejigged its prices significantly, effectively reducing the monthly cost of the car while at the same time increasing the cost of the battery rental.
Also, the PCP term was previously either 36 or 48 months, but now the term can be 24 months, and this is now the term with the lowest prices.
At 60mpg, if you could get it fuel included it would cost an additional ?55 per month in fuel for 7000 miles per year. And being electric the ZOE is much nicer to drive, and can be run from a renewable energy supply. The beauty of this was that, with a bit of advance research, I found out that there was an electric car charging point and parking space on the same road as the Passport Office and very close to it. We found the parking space and charger by the Passport Office very easily and it was operating fine. The emissions from diesel cars impact badly on local air quality; petrol cars aren’t as bad, but they still have emissions. It also has a ‘Chameleon’ charger, allowing the ZOE to be charged at different power levels using the same socket, enabling drivers to take advantage of a wide range of charging points. The family jury expected “a real breakthrough for ZOE R240, a truly affordable vehicle” and saw it as “an eminently practical choice of second vehicle, with its extensive equipment and large boot”. Renault engineers have improved the motor efficiency by optimizing the electronic control system. As well as extending the ZOE range, Renault engineers also upgraded the Cameleon charger to reduce the low-power charge time.
Previously I’ve done some detailed monitoring of charge curves, specifically for 7kW home charging and 43kW rapid charging. Firstly, the previous analyses of charging curves show that the predicted charge time decreases over time, so it will likely decrease towards an actual lower charge time.
This may be partly due to the charger being a generic, non-ZOE specific one and it may be partly due to the ZOE being an older Q210 model which is well known for inefficient charging at low powers. There are two likely reasons for this: firstly, the ZOE’s on-board Chameleon charger is less efficient at lower powers, which is the reason Renault insists on only funding higher power home charge points (32A rather than 16A). It takes a long time to charge (8-10 hours), more than twice as long as the home charge point, so I could never see myself getting much use from it. Another awkward thing is that the electronics box is rather heavy, so when using any socket a distance off the floor it hangs down and can exert a significant force on the plug.
Further, the 10m length option – something not available from most suppliers – has been a godsend. This app makes it possible to charge electric cars using renewable energy at times when the market prices are most favourable.
With smart charging systems like the one developed by Eneco, Renault electric vehicles make a big contribution to power systems’ stability and reliability: EVs turn into an asset for the grid rather than create overload. To achieve this, all they have to do is indicate by what time the car must be fully charged and the system will automatically determine the lowest price within this time frame.
Renewable energies feature in 56% of the new electricity power plants built in the world today. Renault sees the electric vehicle as an eminently viable countermeasure against global warming. O’Donnell bristles when asked if the Focus Electric is, like the Chevrolet Spark and Honda Fit Electric, a “compliance car” meant to satisfy California regulators.
O’Donnell says that an additional 733 dealers are undergoing certification to sell battery cars, and then the car will be fully available in 50 states. He confirmed that a new ad campaign for the C-MAX Energi will take direct aim at another member of the Prius family, the plug-in hybrid. Some 75 percent of its EV sales will be hybrids, 25 percent plug-in hybrids and just five percent battery electrics, O’Donnell said.
It has a major corporate commitment to electrification—led by longtime enthusiast Bill Ford—but a realization that, for now, far more Americans are going to buy the country’s bestselling vehicle, the F-150 pick-up truck. Any vehicle that is licensed with the DVLA as a pure electric or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can join the scheme. The pilot scheme will cost electric car owners ?17 annually (for administration, postage and packaging), plus a one-off refundable deposit of ?50 for the use of a specially-designed yellow recharging cable.
This was made possible by the long range of their electric vehicles and a network of high-powered charging stations, which already exist in the US and are currently being installed in Europe. If a large number of electric cars were to charge at night, existing renewable wind energy could be used instead of being wasted. To make things a bit more difficult – presumably to discourage fiddling – the zips don’t have handles on them, and the loose ends are tucked into the hole formed where the zips come together.
Therefore in total over 24 months it would cost ?373 per month compared to the ZOE’s ?183. And being electric you can monitor the battery charge and remaining range, and control the heating or air conditioning, from your smartphone.etc. The soft, natural feel of the skins is preserved thanks to the extremely high standard of their finish, while the use of varnish and other chemical agents has been halved in comparison with most leather upholsteries.
Last but not least, the ZOE Swiss Edition comes with electrically folding door mirrors for additional peace of mind.
Second to the environment, because batteries not fitted for automobile use, but that still have considerable remaining capacity, can have a longer life and lower carbon footprint before they are actually recycled. However pure electric cars have zero tailpipe emissions, and so are ideal for use in our congested urban areas.
The new Cameleon charger is especially efficient on charging stations from 3 to 22 kW, which account for more than 95% of the vehicle charging infrastructures currently in operation. Given that I knew this method would take much longer than either of those I chose to not monitor the whole charge, instead just one hour to get an idea of its behaviour. Secondly, the predicted time includes time for battery balancing where the simple linear charge estimation does not, in other words there’s probably an hour or two of balancing ‘charging’ when the charge curve hits 99% – hence the estimation of 17-18 hours. Secondly, it’s a simple fact that the ZOE’s 13A lead is rather pricey – at about ?500 for the official Renault cable.
However, bad experiences with using public charge points when away from home, particularly a fateful Christmas Day, changed my mind.
The cost of this flexibility is that you need to manually set your preferred charge rate (up to the level available from the socket you use). It doesn’t just allow for reaching sockets that might otherwise be unobtainable, but also provides the simple convenience of charging on a drive while parked behind the homeowner’s car (and so not requiring it to be moved out the way).
Like at night, when the production of sustainable wind energy exceeds demand in most European countries. They can store and use electricity when it is less carbon-dependent and cheapest for their owners. O’Donnell, who came to his new job from Lincoln just two months ago, declines to say if a plug-in hybrid is in that division’s future.
However, the AC rapid charge point wasn’t working so we just headed straight on to Peterborough. We then headed around Peterborough, visiting the various shops and restaurants to kill the requisite four hours until the passport was ready. The Renault ZOE is also a compact size for city driving – so surely it must be the perfect city car? If three-phase charging is available, then a 32 A 22 kW charge point can provide an 80% battery charge in one hour, or a 43 kW 63 A charge point can give an 80% battery charge in just half an hour. I eventually bought one ‘just in case’ and have had some good use out of it when spending long periods with relatives, in particular while visiting parents and in-laws.
