A program to develop and promote the application of acoustic tagging technology to study migration routes and ecosystem usage of Pacific salmon and other marine species. The Pacific Ocean Shelf Tracking (POST) Project was designed to develop and promote the application of acoustic tagging technology to study the life history of Pacific salmon.
Methods and Technology Acoustic tags allow the movements of individual animals to be tracked for the duration of their residence on the continental shelf, potentially through the entire life history of shelf-resident species. In 2002, the first acoustic listening lines were deployed around northern Vancouver Island, BC, as two-month experiments tracking 120 tagged steelhead smolts. These were the cheapest deep cycle marine batteries I found when I needed to purchase a new battery bank for my Beneteau 393.
It would seem that every year without fail we’ve had to purchase a new battery for either crank or house of the old yacht so when it come to time to design a new battery bank and bed for our next yacht I did heaps of research on the internet just to see what was out there. First I started researching price as I thought I knew enough about deep cycle batteries to just find a battery at the best price and move on.  It was then that I found some deep cycle batteries and they were really competitive in price against the traditional lead acid and also the AGM (absorbed glass matt) batteries. These are sealed batteries, have less lead and weigh heaps less and we loved them when they first come out and they are currently the market leader in deep cycle marine batteries.  Being a sealed battery they have worked through the chemical reactions to incorporate not only the actions that make a battery work (acid over lead electrolytes reaction) but they have created the glass part that actually absorbs the vapours as they rise in the battery and converts it back to the liquid and drops back down into the battery to again continue in this process. I delved a little more into the details about this and found that these batteries can actually take a hell of a punch in charge – they are nigh on impossible to cook but conversely they actually prefer higher voltages. I found them from a distributor who sells them on Ebay at really good prices – heaps more competitive then the AGM. Carbon dioxide spewed out by human activities has made ocean water so acidic that it isA  eating away at the shells and skeletons of starfish, coral, clams and other sea creatures, scientists said.Marine researchers knew that ocean acidification was occurring in deep water far from land.
Oceans have long been repositories for the carbon dioxide, absorbing some 525 billion tonnes of the climate-warming substance over the last two centuries - about one-third of all human-generated carbon dioxide for that period. Continental shelves were formed in between glacial periods as the ocean flowed over the continents forming shallow areas along the coasts. The continental shelves that exist today drop off around 130 m off the coast at a steep embankment called the shelf break, which descends to the abyssal plain. Continental shelves are an oasis in the ocean for plants and animals due to the abundance of sunlight, shallow waters, and nutrient packed sediment that washes in from rivers, wave action, and in some areas, upwelling.
In 1930, many nations began to realize the value of their continental shelves, and requested new laws to replace older ones that limited their territory to only three miles from the coastline.

With your support, most marine life and their ocean habitats can be protected, if not restored to their former natural levels of biodiversity.

A major area of focus for POST involved the development of a permanent continental-scale telemetry system. Juvenile salmon caught in rivers can be implanted with acoustic tags, allowing their journeys to be seamlessly tracked from fresh- to saltwater. If you think that a deep cycle marine battery only comes in Lead Acid or AGM well then there’s more to ponder as new technology is finally moving into batteries.
They can be sealed as this absorption method remove all breathing needed. This also means no maintenance. The average sunny hot day in Brisbane punches through a regular 14+ volts from the solar panels – they are regulated and controlled  with a Projecta 20A Solar Controller though. The seller was really good for me and when I explained I was building a new battery house system and I really wanted a matched set of 3 (from same batch) and they had to be really new stock he was more than obliging. What they called "truly astonishing" was the appearance of this damaging phenomenon on the Pacific North American continental shelf, stretching from Mexico to Canada."This means that ocean acidification may be seriously impacting our marine life on our continental shelf right now, today," said Richard Feely of the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.
Biologists believe C02 is making the sea too acidic - damaging reefs and continental shelves around the world Other continental shelf regions around the world are likely to face the same fate, he said. But the daily absorption of 22 million tonnes has changed the chemistry and biology of the oceans, turning it corrosive and making it difficult or impossible for some animals to produce their calcium carbonate shells and skeletons, the researchers said. This change has been observed over the last three decades, the scientists said in research published in the journal Science. About 18,000 years ago, during the height of the Pleistocene ice ages, much of what is now a continental shelf was actually above water. The continental margin is a combination of the continental shelf and slope, a varied seascape with underwater canyons carved out by turbidity currents. In addition to the vast amount of benthic life, the continental shelf is home to a variety of species such as tuna, menhaden, mackerel, and cod.
We sincerely thank our thousands of members, donors and sponsors, who have decided to get involved and support the MarineBio Conservation Society.
POST’s array sits on the seabed of the continental shelf and upstream in several major rivers, and is used to monitor the movements of not only salmon, but many other types of marine animals along the shelf. Acoustic tags transmit an identifier unique to each tagged animal, the signal being detected and recorded when within range of an acoustic receiver moored on the seabed.
You can read more about AGM batteries here. So what is not to love – they are lighter and they are sealed right!
The batteries were delivered to my garage door which made things easier for me to move around.
I will post pictures of the battery bed and set up later on when I get a chance to take them.

Natural activities, including human breath, send the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but for the last 200 years or so, the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum have pushed emissions higher. The acidic waters are coming up onto the continental shelf,A  the shallow area near a big land mass like North America,A  because of a long-term churning ocean pattern that moves cold deep water up toward the surface in the spring and summer, the scientists said. Turbidity currents are also responsible for the continental rise or the gradual slope of the continental shelf into the abyssal plain. People have depended on the continental shelf for thousands of years to provide 90% of the fisheries production in the world and, more recently, for petroleum. Tracking data generated from the array can be applied to the development of fishery management policies aimed at the sustainable harvest of resources, and to the understanding and conservation of other marine and diadromous species.
Receivers are placed across the continental shelf in a series of lines such that their detection ranges overlap, ensuring very high probability of detection of every tagged animal. The largest shelf in the world is the Siberian Shelf in the Arctic, which measures in places up to 1,500 km in width.
According to the abiogenic theory, fossil fuels were formed when ancient plants and animals fell to sedimentary rock in the ocean floor.
The international laws evolved, and in 1982 the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea was enacted to regulate marine resources and pollution worldwide.
West Coast took about 50 years to get there, starting somewhere on the ocean surface and absorbing their share of carbon dioxide, then sinking deep down and eventually welling upward.
Some regions like Chile and Sumatra have no shelf because of their location near a subduction zone.
The international laws are still heavily debated and undergoing changes to allow fair access while protecting the resources belonging to individual nations. The natural process called ocean respiration could not explain the high levels of carbon dioxide that caused the corrosive water the scientists found on the continental shelf; the addition of human-generated carbon dioxide did. Normal continental shelves are found in the South China Sea, the North Sea, and the Persian Gulf and are usually about 80 km in width with a depth of 30-600 m.
This acidic water is corroding the shells of clams, mussels, starfish and the free-floating sea-snails called pterapods that nourish young salmon, the researchers said, citing data from a 2007 research cruise.
Corrosion occurred in water that absorbed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in 1957, when levels of this gas were considerably lower than they are now, the researchers said.
