If your wrench is on the positive terminal and it accidentally touches anything metal, you will short circuit the battery. If you disconnect the negative cable first, and reconnect it last, then the car is not electrically connected to the negative battery terminal.
While connecting or disconnecting the negative cable, you don't need to worry about the wrench touching metal parts of the car, because everything is at the same electrical potential.
Side-terminal batteries, common on General Motors products, require a small socket or wrench to remove the battery cables.
The industry standard with automotive wiring is Black = Ground (which is negative), and Red = Hot (which is positive).
This can be confusing when compared with wire used in buildings, where black (and other colors) are hot, and white is neutral, which has the same potential as ground. Dirt on the surface of a car battery can create a pathway for a tiny amount of electricity to flow between the terminals.
To prevent the radio from losing its preset stations, I decided to try using this 12 volt portable power supply to keep power supplied to the car while the battery is removed.
I connected the black alligator clip to the engine, and the red clip to the positive battery cable. The arms (arrow) go underneath the cable end clamp, and the center pushes against the terminal post on the battery.
Under the cap there is (or was) a round brush to clean the inside surface of the cable end clamp. My first car had no battery hold-down clamp or strap, and since I drove like a freakin' yahoo the battery slid off its tray and rested against the alternator.
I sprayed some diluted Simple Green on the battery and used a small nylon brush to scrub the dirt and oily residue. I wondered if silicone dielectric terminal grease was meant for battery terminals, so I read the package that I had in my supply of automotive chemicals. I applied some dielectric grease to the battery terminals and spread it around with my finger.
I also applied a thin film of dielectric grease to the inside surface of the battery cable ends. The good news: By connecting the portable power supply to the positve cable (and grounding the black clamp to the engine) I did not need to re-program the stations on my car radio. A clean battery with clean connections will provide the greatest possible cranking power on cold winter mornings. I think it's a good idea to do this battery maintenace once a year, preferably before cold weather sets in. Many years ago, when I was 19 and knew nothing about fixing cars, I reasoned that a recent invention called silicone caulking might work to patch a small hole or crack in the plastic case of a car battery. The Center for Auto Safety just made the NHTSA (US Government) make public the full text of all TSBs from now on. Whenever you drive in your car, you are safer thanks in part to a lot of work over the years by this small but very effective consumer advocacy group.

In April 2011, we purchased a 2002 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited Edition (with 2.7 engine) from a privite owner. My car died on the freeway, just shut down, called AAA and got towed to the mechanic who works on my car all the time. On my way back to work from a Dental Appointment, just had 4 fillings drilled, and my car starts to make this awful knocking sound. The armrest compartment has a rubber shelf, cigarette adapter, and a soft drink can holder.
It's integrated into the left armrest, but instead of just being a pocket like most cars, it's sculpted to provide a real hand-hold for a human hand. There's also a weird wedge-shaped thing behind the shifter which I guess could be used to jam cups of varying sizes into, but with flat surfaces, and a penchant for using styrofoam cups, a spill disaster or two is definitely in the future. Instead of having square mirrors for maximum visibility, the mirror holders are shaped like teardrops (design symmetry with the tail?), so the mirror area is reduced where you least want it reduced. They are small, poorly distinguished, and very far forward (I'm 6"1) on the curve of the armrest. The 3-Series is morphing into a relatively driver-neutral, family light sedan, but the vehicle dynamics and quality of build remain excellent. Hi Bryan, fuse #91 in the battery compartment fuse box under the passenger's seat is for your blower motor.

Ok, the instructions to access the battery compartment are in your owner's manual starting on page 490. Good news and bad news- bad first- great documents and photo's- I cant get to this without removing the floor unless there is some kind of trick that is beyond my scope of knowledge. Tory Johnson, GMA Workplace Contributor, discusses work-from-home jobs, such as JustAnswer in which verified Experts answer people’s questions. I would (and have) recommend your site to others I was quite satisfied with the quality of the information received, the professional with whom I interacted, and the quick response time. 15 years master certified 100% fix rate and have access to factory radio codes, wiring, and instructions. The voltage isn't harmful, but the sudden unexpected sparks will startle the $hit out of you, and could even burn you. After that you can disconnect the positive battery terminal with minimal risk, because if your wrench touches any metal parts of the car there is no complete circuit, and nothing happens. There were two very long bolts (red arrow) that secured the bracket to the body of the truck. The alternator pully carved a nice little groove in the side of the battery case, allowing half the battery acid to leak out of one cell. This will make it easier to read when I'm jump-starting someone's car on a cold dark winter night. Then I went to my local garage and paid a whole dollar for them to top-up the acid in the leaking cell. I had my engine completely rebuilt just over a year ago and I am once again in the same boat. After owning vehicle for 6 years and driving 106,000 miles, the water pump broke and contaminated the oil. It was running great until 3 weeks later when the engine seized while pulling into a driveway. My warranty did cover the new engine; it took 2 months to fix at the Chrysler dealer in Torrance CA.
The complaints are organized into groups with data published by vehicle, vehicle component, and specific problem.
In a later service session, for the scheduled major service inspection, I drew a similar car, with 15,000 miles on it.
Y refers to the class of car (3, 5, and 7 series, corresponding to small, medium, and too-large luxury models).
Alas, the airbags-for-complete-fucking-morons warning remains, and is inseparable from the material.
There's a lead-in system that will slightly tilt the lights in the direction of turn, so you can see what you're turning into. It's fun to play with automatic downshifting, but for normal driving, there are so many overrev protections it's just easier driving the car in its automatic transmission mode.
It feels great, and looks great, but my regular passenger and I noticed that it didn't breath like leather. I am not 100% sure why car manufacturers think the compass belongs on the rear-view mirror. This is what attracted me to the brand originally: the center console in the E36 was tilted at a pretty sharp angle. My 60-lb dog likes to sit there (and to drive), so the car will beep about no seatbelts being fastened for two or three minutes. This makes user evaluation of issues such as the one I encountered with the loaner problematic. Standard Prius display continues to work, showing all-green (fully charged) much more frequently.
In Phase Two, a "vehicle-to-home" (V2H) system designed by CalCars and REgrid will connect the car's batteries directly to the PV system, providing home backup power for extended outages. The users manual also shows the fuse box in the cargo compartment and p.491 shows the fuse box in the passenger compartment but it is not under the seat. There is so much current (amperage) available that your wrench literally becomes an arc welder. Corrosion can increase the resistance of the electrical connection, which can prevent the battery from charging properly.
But I've been doing this for years and my car batteries usually last 5 or 6 years before they need to be replaced. Paid over $3000 to have water pump replaced and also replaced motor mounts, timing chain and some other parts. I had full knowledge of the engine and oil sludge issues after doing research online but I fell in love with the car. For instance I had to replace the left front control arm, the right rear brake line, the airbag clock spring and now the whole dam engine.
This exposes current owners to the capabilities of new models as well as variations one might never otherwise be interested in driving. WHICH is better than any other automatic transmission out there, just a weak replacement for BMW's own manual gearboxes.
You can remove the fob, but if you do so without pressing on it first, the car will beep at you. This is just a poor functional design (on the other hand, as GOOD design, the fob itself separates into a key and fob, presumably for a fob battery-failure situation to allow one entry into the car). The only functional benefit I can see is that you can leave the car running and depart it with the fob, thus allowing for remote control of the car's security features.
With the soft switches, you basically have five switch positions: way up, up, down, way down, and neutral. BMW's long had a reputation for poor interiors, but seemed on the path to turning that around with the E46 series. I had real doubts about this website but your promptness of response, quick followup and to the point answer with picture was incredible. Corroded battery connectors can create so much voltage drop that the car's starter motor cranks slowly or not at all.
Against all my friend's and family's advice to not buy the car, I bought it anyway because it was running great and thought it was worth the risk. We had purchased an extended warranty from Gold Key for $2695.00 which is still in effect, but they will not cover the engine due to the sludge build up.
First I had to replace my water pump, and the next day after the water pump was fixed my engine failed!!! In general, this contributes to the feeling of the driver controls being a bit haphazard, ignoring the experience of the past. When the new 5 series came out, the tilt was gone, thus removing the 5 from my shopping list. The effect is most noticeable on the black rubbery naughahyde-like covering on the steering wheel and glareshield. The owner's pouch wasn't in the car, so I was left to wonder what the picture of a pitcher with waves under it meant. If you have any more ideas I would appreciate it, otherwise I will have to take it to the dealership. I unhooked the charger, started the car, turned it off again and the fan stayed off this time. This car was only used for leisure and we put less than 3,000 miles since we have owned it. I suspect this is a function of the design of the automatic transmission system, which seems to aim for a low RPM target in a gear range in order to keep fuel economy low. I was thinking that they're big for peripheral vision, which might work for daytime driving.
Since I want to keep the car, I decided to have the engine replaced with a remanufactured engine of the same kind instead of a used engine with 58k miles which would most likely have the same oil sludge problems. While they were replacing the engine, they also came across qyite a few other problems and things that needed to be replaced including 3 motor mounts, a faulty and leaking transmission module, upper and lower ball joints and controller arms, front struts, faulty window motors, intermittent wiring shorts mainly in the dash, the airbag light is on, and there's a leak somewhere in the top that's allowing water to get into the trunk.
If anyone knows somewhere I can take this vehicle in MD to have the engine replaced under warranty or for free ny chrysler, or even a reimbursement, please let me know!! Slapping it down to release it doesn't work, and manually pulling it up usually results in signalling the opposite direction to the turn, which I'm sure will end up in crashes. Googling this problem seems to indicate it's become a nuisance warning (tip for designers: icons have never been what they were cracked up to be. Took car to a Chrysler Dealership and they tested the oil pump pressure and said everything tested out fine. I only had them replace the engine, motor mounts, transmission module and lower ball joints and controller arms. The cubic capacity of the engine (liter) is an indication of the relative power of the engine. They're usually contrived, are culturally confusing, and have no speed-of-recognition value. The other repairs will have to wait for a while as I've now spent $11,600 (purchase price of $5400 + repair costs). So it definitely has been a frustrating and costly car purchase and I can say with absolute certainty that I will never purchase another Chrysler product. We have spent so much money on this car that we are in debt and can't afford to buy another one! There was loud ticking noises, I would always have to put oil and antifreeze in it (every single week).
Decided not to spend another dime on this POS and dumped the car for $800 and afterwards decided to never again to buy Chrysler.
I couldn't believe how horrible the oil sludge issue was inside the engine once they opened it up (see included pictures). The 2.7L V6 double overhead cam engine has a design issue and is an engine to steer well clear of. The car was owned by only 1 other person before me and since I don't have any way of knowing how often they did their oil changes, it's hard to blame it all on the design flaws of this engine. The bureau of automotive repair assigned me an agent who stood by my side through this whole process.
Based on how many people have reported this same issue though, I would have to believe that it's most likely the fault of a poorly designed engine by Chrysler. Since having the new engine installed, everything seems to be working great, but only time will tell.
From what I've read and heard, synthetic works much better and should not cause the same oil sludge problems.
Based on other information online, Chrysler hasn't accepted responsibility for this faulty engine, but if they are reading this review, I would love to be compensated for all the costs involved in replacing it.
I have told you this story ladies and gentlemen to inform you the engine in my car has been replaced 3 times!
I understand that on a car that's 11 years old, most of the other repairs it needs are from normal wear and tear and age, but the engine shouldn't have failed after only 109k miles. Buyer beware: If you're interested in buying a used Chrysler Sebring from this era, make sure you have at least $5000-$7000 extra for all the repairs it will need.
