As more and more folks adopt cell phones, public phone booths across the globe are quickly becoming obsolete. The passion of a regional New South Wales community group has led to the construction of one of the largest electric car charging stations in the southern hemisphere. While organising a festival that celebrates and promotes sustainability, Peter Fraser and Alex Ferrara came up with an idea. They decided to look at how electric cars could be included in the Goulburn Connects Festival. The group was determined to make Goulburn the beginning of an 'electric highway' connecting Sydney and Melbourne. As well as being environmentally friendly, Alex Ferrara said the regional city is already starting to see an economic benefit to having the chargers and this will only grow as more and more people trade petrol for power. The project will examine the potential of reusing spent lithium-ion battery packs from GM’s electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, as a means of providing cost-effective energy storage capacity, which will improve the efficiency of electrical systems as they evolve into smart grids.
