Why does the iron nail become brownish in colour and the blue colour of copper sulphate solution fade? In this reaction, iron has displaced or removed another element, copper, from copper sulphate solution. Metal:- A metal is a chemical element whose atoms readily lose electrons to form positive ions (cations), and form metallic bonds between other metal atoms and ionic bonds between nonmetal atoms.
Metals from aluminium to copper in the activity series of metals, react slowly when heated in air to form the metal oxides. Reactive metals can displace any metal less reactive than itself, from the oxide, chloride or sulphate of the less reactive metal in solution or their molten state. Copper (II) sulphate solution is blue; iron sulphate solution is almost colourless when dilute. Barium chloride solution is used to test for sulfate ionsĀ [ion: The charged particle formed when an atom, or a group of atoms, lose or gain electrons.

Some chemical bonds are broken, new chemical bonds are formed, and the result is a different set of molecules from the original reactants. The Lewis structure for each molecule is on top, and the molecular formula is on the bottom. A pair of coefficients represent the ratio of one product or reactant in relation to the other reactants or products. Metals tend to loose electrons easily and form positively charged ions; therefore metals are called electropositive elements.
Hence, sodium is stored under kerosene to prevent its reaction with oxygen, moisture and carbon dioxide.
However, on prolonged strong heating copper reacts with oxygen and forms copper (II) oxide (CuO) outside and copper (I) oxide (Cu2O) inside.
The reaction is slow at room temperature, but its rate can be increased by the addition of a little copper (II) sulphate. During the displacement, the blue solution loses its colour and the iron metal is seen to turn pink-brown as the displaced copper becomes deposited on it. One carbon atom, three oxygen atoms, and two hydrogen atoms yield one carbon atom, three oxygen atoms, and two hydrogen atoms.

Looking at an inventory of the atoms, note how the number of atoms of each type on each side of the equation match perfectly. Looking at the products of the reaction, the 2+ and 2- charges for its constituent ions on the right added together also equal zero. Sodium metal forms sodium ions Na+, Mg forms positively charged Magnesium ions Mg2+and aluminium forms aluminium ions Al3+. Unlike mathematical equations, which are built around an equals (= )sign, chemical equations show the changes in molecules when a chemical reaction occurs and are built around an arrow (→).
