MONTREAL: Spare lithium-ion batteries will no longer be allowed in checked baggage on airlines as of April 1, the UN’s aviation agency said on Friday, following concerns by pilots and plane makers that they are a fire risk.
The batteries, which are rechargeable and used in cell phones or laptops, can only be packed in carry-on baggage or carried by the passenger, the International Civil Aviation Organization said in a statement. On Monday, ICAO prohibited shipments of lithium-ion batteries as cargo on passenger aircraft, citing safety concerns. Lithium metal batteries, which are used in watches and are not rechargeable, have already been banned on passenger planes globally. ICAO’s 36-state governing council said the prohibition would be in effect April 1 and would be maintained until a new fire-resistant packaging standard is designed to transport the batteries.
The new packaging standard is expected by 2018, ICAO Council President Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu said earlier this week in a statement. Pilots and aircraft manufacturers are concerned that existing standards are not strong enough to contain lithium battery fires.
The FAA has published a new warning about the danger of storing spare lithium batteries in checked bags. To reduce the risk of lithium battery fires, the FAA’s regulations only allow for limited exceptions for passengers to carry spare lithium batteries into the cabin for personal use. For spare lithium batteries that are carried into the cabin, the FAA says that they need to be stored separate from each other or have their exposed terminals taped over. Apple has been awarded a US patent for a system that could disable iPhone cameras with infrared signals, allowing photography to be remotely banned in locations such as concerts and sensitive sites. For photographer Nick Carver, photography is not about likes or comments or followers on your social network of choice; photography is about taking photos you love, printing them, and getting them up on your (or someone else's) wall. I will begin by saying that my intention is not to attack Steve McCurry or defame him in any manner. The golden ratio (or golden mean, or golden section, or divine proportion, or whatever you want to call it) is the subject of heated debate among photographers.
Back in January, we reported that a DJ named Chris Holmes had developed a line of "anti-paparazzi clothing" that ruins flash photographs at night by blowing the photos out with excessive reflected light.

When it comes to recharging gadgets, sometimes your only option is spare pre-charged batteries. It doesn’t appear there has been an outright ban on packing batteries into your checked luggage; rather, airlines are being strongly encouraged to prevent passengers from doing so, and to give passengers an extra warning about it when they arrived at check-in and ticket purchase.

Note: this basic technique should work in Windows 10, 8, 7 or Vista, or really for any device. While it’s a good idea to use any included utilities or just follow instructions specific to your laptop, you can also perform battery calibration without any specialized tools.

Go into your computer’s power management settings and set it to automatically sleep or hibernate at 5% battery.
Pull the power plug and leave your computer discharging until it automatically sleeps or hibernates.
RELATED ARTICLESHTG Explains: Should You Shut Down, Sleep, or Hibernate Your Laptop?Computers can sleep, hibernate, or shut down. Your laptop should now be reporting a more accurate amount of battery life, sparing you any surprise shutdowns and giving you a better idea of how much battery power you have at any given time.
I think you don't understand me If you set the battery's critical level action to sleep and set the critical level percentage at 5%, the battery will make the computer go to sleep when the battery is supposed to be at 5%. Well, I'm assuming that if somebody WERE to be thinking of doing a calibration, they would shut down all programs, save their work, etc. True, it's not likely but it still can happen (been there and didn't even get the tee shirt).
I'm just saying, I suppose that having the computer shut down at 0% rather than 5% will provide a much better calibration result.
Once the battery's charge cycles have maxed out, the battery doesn't work anymore - it will tell the OS it's consumed, and prevent the computer from charging it. Ok here's a question: My laptop is like the screenshot in the beginning of the article (Plugged in and not charging) and its slowly declined all the way down to 17 %.
On my HP Pavilion 15 with Windows 8.1, Windows doesn't allow me to set critical battery level below 9%.

Lithium ion batteries are allowed in personal electronic devices, whether in passengers’ carry-ons or checked baggage. The government agency is also asking that airlines to inform passengers of this ban during ticket purchase and check-in.
They should also be kept away from other metal objects, and there are size and quantity restrictions as well. Iceland is notorious for being windy, and while I was shooting there was blowing winds carrying ocean spray and water splashes all over me and my camera + lens.

The idea gained traction, and now the "Flashback" line of apparel will soon be hitting the market. That’s all fine and well, only now the FAA doesn’t want you checking them into your checked baggage, citing concerns about security and safety.
According to the TSA website, all sorts of batteries are allowed in carry-on baggage, including lithium batteries.
There was no battery warning from Windows — in fact, you recently checked and Windows said you had 30% battery power left. Its built-in power meter estimates how much juice available and how much time on battery you have left — but it can sometimes give you incorrect estimates. No matter how well you take care of the battery, its capacity will still decrease as a result of unavoidable factors like typical usage, age, and heat.
The battery’s power meter will then see how long the battery lasts and get a much more accurate idea of how much capacity the battery has left.

These tools will usually just make sure your laptop has a full battery, disable power management settings, and allow the battery to run to empty so the battery’s internal circuitry can get an idea of how long the battery lasts. Each manufacturer may recommend a slightly different calibration procedure or tool to ensure your laptop’s battery is properly calibrated.
For example, you probably want your computer to automatically power off the display and then go to sleep when you’re not using it to save battery power. The key to calibration is allowing the battery to run from 100% to almost empty and then charging it all the way up to 100% again, which may not happen in normal use.
My laptop's been shutting off at 20% and giving me low battery notifications at 30% rather than 15%. It would be much better to recalibrate the battery and allow the computer to autoshutdown at the factory percentage. Modern lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries do not suffer from memory problems the way that older nickle-based technology did.
It used to be able to run off of the battery all the way down to minimal, then it started shutting of at 67%. Lenovo's power management calibration tool failed to do the trick, as the laptop just shuts off at around 70%, which kills the process, because when I plug in the power and reboot, the calibration tool is no longer running.
For his project Volte-face, Curtis visited iconic landmarks and pointed his camera in the opposite direction. It’s essentially the “poor man’s tilt shift.” All the technique requires is disconnecting a lens from the camera body and floating it around in front of your sensor to shift the focal plane in weird directions. According to a new report, the FAA has advised airlines to ban lithium bags from checked luggage, something that will force passengers to put them in carry-ons instead. Whether airlines will proceed to ban the batteries in checked baggage isn’t clear at this point, though it does seem likely. Check your laptop manufacturer’s website for information on using any utilities they provide. Instead, modern batteries are much like modern "smart" inkjet printer cartridges - there's an onboard EEPROM that monitors the number of charge cycles on the battery. It takes practice to get accurate with it, but overall the technique is pretty straightforward. That fact may make it hard for you to take me seriously, but bear with me for just this post.
Since the introduction of the Nikon D1x, camera manufacturers have been riffing on these three letters. Apple says its newer laptops don’t require this calibration procedure, although older models do. Boroughs said she decided to check the bag on her March 2011 flight rather than carry it on because her first leg of the trip was crowded. There's a set number of charge cycles allowed on a battery (similar to how there's a set number of uses on an inkjet cartridge, and the cartridge notifies the printer when its ROM says it's all used up).
What I want to write here is that I think the field of photography by those making art is changing in a disturbing way. OEM battery utilities from HP, Apple, and others simply look at the number of charge cycles on the battery.
We were at the very back and there was no room to put our baggage anywhere," she recalled of her flight from Charleston to Chicago. At home in Charleston the next morning, she went where she thought a thief might -- and logged onto Craigslist.
When she called Chicago police to tell them she located her stolen laptop, she says detectives took over. In court six months later, a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney admitted investigators were not able to match up the other allegedly stolen laptops and electronics to any owners.
