It does not matter how much you paid for your car or how advanced it is, but chances are that you are using a lead-acid battery. Given that a quality car battery is expensive, you will obviously want it to serve you for days on end. After every 5000km, it is important to have your battery tested for voltage, that is, does it still discharge the required 12 Volts? Every few months, you need to give your battery terminals a rub down with a wire brush to keep them clean. Ensure that you purchase one that comes with heating options, as it will go a long way in shielding your car battery from the effects brought about by freezing and sub-freezing.
If you are storing the battery, then you have to make sure that the charge always stays at optimum, that is, 12.5 volts. Decide for yourself with our quick guide to all the essential facts on Chevy’s upcoming Volt.
Two major design features set the Volt apart from anything else in mainstream dealerships today: It’s a plug-in hybrid, and it uses electric drive exclusively. Unlike the Toyota Prius or any of the other cars we typically think of as hybrids, you can plug the Volt in at home to top off the batteries, then drive short distances without ever having to fire up the engine. More significantly, from an engineering standpoint at least, there is no mechanical connection between the engine and wheels: Even when the batteries run low and the engine kicks in, it only acts as a generator, supplying electricity to the motors that physically drive the car.
You can plug the Volt into the standard 120-volt outlet you probably already have in your garage – the same one you would use for a radio, a shop vac or a toaster, for that matter. The plug for the Volt won’t look like one for any other appliance: It looks more like a gas pump handle than a plug. Chevy claims you can fully charge the Volt in 10 hours from a 120-volt outlet, or as little as four hours using the aforementioned 240-volt charger. The Volt will cost $41,000 off the showroom floor, but a $7,500 federal tax rebate will bring that price down to $33,500.
I just recently had to replace the 12V auxiliary battery in the electric MR2 after almost 2 years of driving.
The 12V battery on converted electric cars, serve mostly the same purpose as the 12V battery in a gas car.
Have you ever left the lights on after driving in the rain and come back to a dead battery? Based on your normal driving pattern, estimate the max downtime you will have between driving the car. Multiply the amp draw result from step 1 by the number of hours representing the time you will not be driving the car on a regular basis from step 2.

The electric MR2 uses a 22 amp-hour (AH) deep cycle sealed lead acid battery, which should   give me ample energy to park the car for over 10 days. I don’t, however, recommend doing this because if you ever leave your lights on, you could deplete you main pack battery much quicker. For those of you driving electric cars, how many days can you park your electric car without the 12V battery draining?

Thanks for the numbers, that makes me feel a bit more confident that my amp draw is inline with yours. No, I don’t have an ignition relay between the dc-dc converter output and the 12V battery as your set up shown in the schematic diagram.
Thanks to all those that responded with your suggestions (Here’s a thread of discussion that I posted on diyelectric car and the many useful response I got on the post).
HOV stickers to be extended for electric cars in California until 2020 but not for conversions yet.
You should prepare some baking soda paste, dip the wire brush in it and then scrub your terminals gently, of course after removing the connectors.
To successfully shield your car battery from soaking in too much heat, use a battery wrap, which goes a long way with protecting your battery from the damages emitted by your car’s hood.
A chemical reaction between the battery fluid (electrolyte) and cells within the car battery produces electricity. After years of incubation, GM will begin selling the long-awaited Chevy Volt in November of this year. For folks with short commutes, that means complete autonomy from gas, rather than just improved gas mileage. It’s an electric car with an engine to extend range, not a gasoline car with electric motors to improve efficiency. Or, for a faster charge, you can hook the Volt up to 240 volts, like you would with a washer and drier. The standard is called SAE J1772, and it’s the same type of plug every new electric car will use.
Obviously, factors like weight in the car, driving habits, whether or not you run the air conditioning and even extreme temperatures will whittle that down.
Measuring in miles per gallon made sense when all cars – including other hybrids – used gasoline as their sole source of energy, but it’s not a meaningful metric to apply to a car that can be plugged in and driven for up to 40 miles without any gas at all.
Granted, every battery has a lifespan, but many batteries go down before they have lived their full life.

With that in mind, you will know when you need to recharge the battery when the lights start dimming or when the car fails to start. If you live in South Africa or other countries where they experience winters, you will need to protect your battery from freezing. Patrick admires the resilient spirit of the African people and would love to see all of Africa on wheels. The company has been hyping the concept since all the way back in 2007, when its raked-back stature and muscular body lines suggested “green” cars didn’t have to look like wedges with wheels – and they could come from America, too. Not just any 240-volt outlet will do, though: You’ll need to purchase a special charging station that will need to be hard-wired into your house’s circuit breaker, rather than just plugged into an available outlet. Hypothetically, you could plug in the Volt every night, drive short distances every day, and put on 100,000 miles without burning a drop of gasoline. Some reports indicate that dealerships could significantly mark up the Volt due to low numbers at launch.
GM only plans to produce 10,000 the first production year, and nationwide availability won’t happen until late 2011.
Usually, if the battery is, say, about 2 years old, you may need to recharge it if you have trouble starting the car.
Time and concessions to safety, space and practicality have morphed the once-edgy Volt into a blocky sedan not unlike the Prius in its production form, but the post-pregnancy car retains its central promise: alleviating the need for gas entirely, as long as you don’t need to go far. Chevy hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for this type of charger, but it’s likely more than one company will make them. On the other end of the spectrum, you could also be too lazy to ever charge it, drive it like any other hybrid, and get 48 miles per gallon. The 2012 model year should be much easier to get your hands on: GM has already announced it will ramp up production to 45,000 for that year. Will the Volt serve as the first stepping stone to independence from oil, or is it destined to become yet another EV-1? Real-life fuel economy, measured over a tank of gas or even the life of the car, will vary completely based on how often you’re able to charge it and how far you drive.
