However, it'd be foolish to assume that some people really don't need more than that, and as a result there's always room for an EV with greater range.
Improvements to battery technology could be the best way to find this range, and according to New Scientist (via Autoblog), developments in Lithium-Air batteries from IBM could give us electric cars with a 500-mile range. Lithium-air batteries have significantly greater energy density than regular lithium-ion batteries - close to that of gasoline, in fact.
Several companies are working to improve Lithium-air technology, by testing moisture-proof battery membranes, and graphene cathodes. IBM is seeking to improve the electrolyte, the solvent that carries lithium ions between anode and cathode. However, an IBM-led coalition called Battery 500, hopes to have a full-scale prototype running by 2013, and commercial batteries ready by 2020. You might have to wait a few more years for an electric car that truly goes further than the gasoline equivalent, but it's on its way.
Progress has so far been modest, however, with a typical automotive lithium-ion battery yielding roughly 90 miles of range.
As breakthroughs go, then, the ability to increase the energy density of existing lithium-ion batteries by a factor of seven would be hugely significant. Even more remarkably, it would mean a Tesla Model S would only need to charge up every 2,000-or-so miles, far outperforming even the most frugal gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. According to Nikkei Technology, researchers at the School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo may have discovered a way to make such a breakthrough by adding cobalt to the crystal structure of lithium oxide for the positive electrode in a battery cell. Tests on the new battery have shown that it accepts charging and discharging cycles successfully without generating excess carbon dioxide or oxygen. However, the University of Tokyo says that their battery’s sealed structure gives it greater reliability and safety, both of which are crucial for automotive usage. LG Chem announced at the Electric Vehicle Symposium in South Korea, earlier this month that it now has a 300 mile battery available for car makers. LG Chem will also supply next generation batteries for the 200 mile Chevy Bolt when it arrives in 2017. Volkswagen Group is a LG Chem customer, which may explain why it has been announcing several new models it has in the works that will have better than 250 mile range. We all know battery tech is improving and those that can bring it to market quickly in mass quantities and packaged to fit and retrofit existing cars will win.
Tesla’s Nationwide High Speed charging is a big advantage and will be for years to come.
Everyone agrees that the ideal electric car is one like the Tesla, where the whole car is designed around the battery.
Elon Musk has been brilliant at making the electric car movement work in his favor, but so far, the only truly successful electric cars are at the high end of the market. Something may come along that disrupts Musk’s world just as he has disrupted the world of the traditional car companies.
At current prices, the cost of a Volt battery pack is about $16,000, or the price of a new compact car, so the GM announcement is potentially significant – at least for the first owner of the car. The replacement cost of electric vehicle batteries is one of many concerns that have thus far kept EVs as mere low volume curiosities instead of the mainstream vehicles that proponents maintain they should become.
Nissan’s electric Leaf is also due to go on sale this December in Europe, Japan and the U.S. It has been widely speculated in the media that GM will ask $40,000 for a Volt, before taxpayer subsidies.

GM also appears to be on a similar production ramp up plan as Nissan – with 2012 being the big year for both companies,  who will by then be in mass production with  EVs and in a global fight for potential customers. GM claims, with evident justification, that this is the automotive industry’s longest, most comprehensive battery warranty for an electric vehicle. Recently a former Hyundai marketing executive joined GM after a brief stint at Nissan where he was working on the Leaf intro. Taxpayers are providing massive subsidies to help overcome the objections of potential buyers for what are now and for the foreseeable future high cost, limited range electric vehicles, including, as mentioned, tax credits of $7,500 per vehicle to purchasers, as well a variety of subsidized infrastructure changes.
The Volt’s comprehensive battery warranty covers all 161 battery components, 95% of which are designed and engineered by GM, in addition to the thermal management system, charging system and electric drive components.
GM also claims the Volt is the only electric vehicle that can operate under a full range of climates and driving conditions without limitations or concern about being stranded by a depleted battery. GM claims that the Volt is the only mass-market electric vehicle with a battery that can be warmed or cooled. In hot weather – the most challenging environment for a battery – the Volt’s battery can be chilled during charging.
GM is using Korean owned  LG Chem’s manganese spinel lithium-ion chemistry that  is designed to provide long life and high power output, with a properly maintained temperature. GM engineers have completed more than 1 million miles and 4 million hours of validation testing of Volt battery packs since 2007, as well as each pack’s nine modules and 288 cells. GM’s Brownstown Township, Michigan plant, which began building prototype batteries in January, soon will begin saleable battery production. President Obama will be campaigning in Western Michigan tomorrow at Korea- owned  LG Chem’s battery plant that will begin supplying lithium-ion packs to the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and  for Ford’s upcoming Focus Electric model. For those questioning the lifespan of a Toyota Prius battery, one taxi driver has 621,000 reasons why there’s no cause for concern.
In a second video, Dvorak talked about how much fun the high-mileage Prius is to drive, with the car still maintaining its ability to quickly accelerate and handle the mountain curves with ease. In the San Jose Mercury News, Gary Richards listed more than half a dozen examples of Prius owners reporting mileage in the neighborhood of 200,000 miles on the original battery.
Consumer Reports has also tested to see if Prius batteries lost effectiveness after a long time.

Without considering the practicality of building such a battery, we can look at the periodic table and pick out the lightest elements with multiple oxidations states that do form compounds. Therefore, the maximum theoretical potential of advanced lithium-ion batteries that haven’t been demonstrated to work yet is still only about 6 percent of crude oil!
Many, perhaps most, owners will no doubt prefer to replace the battery pack rather than buy a brand new Roadster. Will the cost of replacing the battery in some EVs outweigh the cost of simply buying a new vehicle?
