Some hybrid owners disagree, saying they were told it would cost $3,000 to $4,000, including labor, to replace dead or dying battery packs in Toyota Priuses, Honda Civic Hybrids and Honda Insights (the original two-seat version, not the current model).Replacement cost will vary by vehicle, with larger, heavier vehicles tending to be more expensive because they require more battery power. Far and away, the most popular HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) in the world in terms of sales is the Toyota Prius, one of the oldest and most reputable brands in the industry. An important component of coming up with the total cost of a Prius battery replacement is the “core credit” program Toyota offers.
As mentioned already, the following numbers will vary, but in most cases the 2001-2003 Prius models batteries have an MSRP of $3,699, with a $1350 deduction for the core credit, not including installation labor.
Up until this point in the article, we’ve explained the “standard” pricing for a Toyota Prius battery replacement, but the truth is, not all consumers experiences are the same. Battery modules that are cycled (charged and discharged) using a specified process to increase the cell capacities that will increase energy, and in some cases, power output.  The other battery components that support the battery pack system are also checked for proper operation. Having your battery “conditioned” is just one of many services offered at your local The Hybrid Shop dealership. Hybrid battery thefts have become an issue in one part of New York City, as 14 batteries have been stolen from Toyota Camry Hybrid cars in one Queens neighborhood in the past 3 months according to CBS News.
When air bags first appeared in cars, air bag thefts were common, primarily because new air bags cost $1,000 or more new.
A new battery for a Camry Hybrid can cost as much as $4,400 to replace and has a service life of approximately 150,000 miles. Whoever the thieves are, they must have specialized knowledge of the cars they are stealing the batteries from. Battery problems in the first and second generation Honda Civic Hybrids have become a major concern for many Honda owners. The high voltage hybrid battery is part of the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system and is located behind the back seat.
The average service life of the NiMH battery in the Honda Civic Hybrids is only about seven years, and in some cases much less.
The LA Times reports that over four percent of the hybrid batteries in California Civics have had to be replaced for various reasons, a figure which many officials says is too high to be acceptable. The leading cause of premature failure with the Honda Civic hybrid batteries has been undercharging. For maximum service life, the hybrid battery must be maintained at 50 to 60 percent of its full charge. Also, if a battery is allowed to fully discharge and is not recharged within 90 days, it may not accept a normal charge and fail prematurely.
Honda’s fix for extending battery life in the Honda Civic Hybrids is to reprogram the IMA control software.
The Honda TSB software update (09-058 and more recently 10-034) reprograms the IMA battery controller, the PGM-FI engine controller, and the CVT transmission controller. However, many Civic owners have complained that their cars do not feel the same after the update. On the other hand, the update does reduce the risk of battery failure and may save you money by extending the life of the battery. If the battery in your Honda Civic Hybrid fails, it can be VERY expensive to replace if it is out of warranty.
A Honda refurbished hybrid battery costs around $2200 plus installation (figure about $200 for labor). Should you consider replacing a bad battery with a used battery from a wrecked Civic Hybrid in a salvage yard?
If the battery in your Honda Civic Hybrid fails while it is still under warranty, your Honda dealer will replace it at no cost.
In California and other states that have adopted California’s SULEV emission rules (NY, VT, ME, MA, RI and CT, plus NJ, OR, WA, PA, NM and FL since 2010), any vehicle that is certified to SULEV emission standards gets a 10 year or 150,000 mile battery warranty. On Honda’s 3rd generation Civic Hybrid (2012 and up), a totally different type of battery is used (lithium ion) and the battery comes with a 15 year or 150,000 mile factory warranty. Your car’s self-diagnostic system will detect most problems that can occur in the hybrid battery or charging system. Though many aftermarket scan tools can read Honda codes, not all can read hybrid codes or access onboard self tests that may be necessary to pinpoint the problem.
Any of the following codes usually means your Civic needs a new battery: POA7E, POA7F, P1435, P1446 or P1570. Other battery related codes include P1447, P1449, POA9D, POA9E, POAC7, POACD, P1574, POA27 and POAE1.
There is no high voltage battery charger that can be used to juice up a dead hybrid battery.
For faster charging, you can remove the #15 fuse from the underhood fuse panel and run the engine at 3,000 RPM to fast charge the battery. A low or dead hybrid battery should not prevent your engine from starting because it also has a conventional 12-volt battery in the engine compartment, and a conventional starter motor to crank the engine.
Turn the ignition OFF and disconnect the negative ground cable from the conventional 12 volt battery in the engine compartment. If any work needs to be done on the hybrid battery junction board or control module, wear insulated gloves and use insulated tools. The oldest Toyota Prius and Honda Insight hybrid cars are now 16 years old, and many have long since topped 100,000 miles.
Although the hybrid cars have been breathtakingly dependable, there’s a limit to the life of Nickel-Metal-Hydride battery packs, and many hybrid owners are now reaching it.
While some owners of hybrid vehicles are having to replace batteries at 70,000 miles, others are getting as much as 200,000 miles out of their original units.
According to Eric Evarts, senior associate autos editor at Consumer Reports, “Most hybrids have been extremely reliable in our survey, and few have needed battery replacements.
The first recourse is getting a new battery at a dealership – an experience that has left some consumers with sticker shock. According to info reported by hybrid car repair shops, they see hybrids that need new packs as early as 70,000 miles or as late as 200,000 miles. For a refurbished Toyota Prius battery pack with Gen 2 cells that fits 2000 to 2003 cars, GreenTec Auto charges $1,745. It’s possible to find individual battery cells for sale on the Internet, which can seem like a low-cost way of getting back on the road. Yet another alternative is buying a used battery via eBay or other suppliers—with some replacement Prius batteries available in junkyards for less than $600. There are a lot of hybrid cars on the road now—1.3 million just from the market leader, Toyota. It will now be reviewed by our editors and we'll answer it soon if we think it's a useful question.
And because there are now so many Prius Hybrids on the streets today, the need to service these vehicles grows with each new purchase.
Essentially, this means you will get a “credit” for allowing your battery to be recycled—which helps the environment but also means a big deduction on your replacement bill—usually somewhere around $1350 or so. Frankly put, because of the different levels of training, education, and technology throughout the Hybrid industry, the quality and cost of the experience varies from person to person, company to company.
Since our inception, our singular goal has been to elevate the entire HEV ownership experience—a process that starts with world-class training for our dealers, specifically on the process of Hybrid Battery Conditioning.

Thieves sold their ill gotten booty to unscrupulous auto repair shops for a few hundred dollars. Many cities are replacing iron manhole covers with reinforced plastic units because thieves can sell the 200 pound iron covers to scrap dealers for a few dollars. The Toyota hybrid system operates on 233 volts, so coming in contact with the power leads could have some nasty consequences for the unwary.

By comparison, the high voltage hybrid battery in the Toyota Prius has proved to be extremely durable and trouble-free. This requires driving the car often enough to keep the battery charged up (at least once every month).
If a car has been damaged and is repainted, curing the paint in a bake over that exceeds 150 degree F may damage the battery. They say their car does not accelerate as quickly and does not get the same fuel economy as before. Honda dealers are reportedly charging $3000 to as much as $4000 to replace these batteries. The refurbished battery is a used battery that has been tested and individual cells replaced if found to be faulty.
Most of these batteries sell are currently selling for $1700 to $2200 depending on the source (plus shipping costs, installation and your old battery in exchange). Although a used battery may cost less than a refurbished battery, it probably does not come with much (if any) warranty. The standard warranty on the hybrid battery is 8 years or 80,000 miles, which ever comes first. To qualify for the extended warranty, your Civic must have been sold and registered in one of these qualifying states, and must be certified to SULEV emission standards (which can be found on the emissions decal in the engine compartment).
If a fault is detected, one or more fault codes will be set and the IMA warning light will be illuminated.
The best scan tool to use is a Honda scan tool such as the Vetronix Mastertech for 2003 models, or a Teradyne scan tool for 2004 and later models. These codes indicate battery-related faults which may or may not require replacing the battery.
So if your battery is fully discharged (no bars showing on the dash charge indicator), just start the engine and drive your car so the engine can recharge the battery. When all of the status bars on the dash charge indicator are illuminated, the battery is fully charged. This system serves as a backup for the hybrid battery, and is also used during cold weather to start the engine. This will disable the IMA controller and prevent it from routing high voltage into the IMA system. Power Solutions President Alex Molinaroli will unveil the company’s next generation technology Jan. Ironically, major supplier Mile Hybrid Automotive in Denver — which sells 500 replacement packs a year – offers new Honda Civic packs from a supplier in Hong Kong, while an auto dealer is more likely to provide a remanufactured unit.

Toyota said even 300,000 or 400,000 miles on one set of batteries is possible, depending on how the vehicle is driven and if hybrid battery maintenance was regularly performed—that’s the all-important factor.
Boost the power and performance of your Honda Civic Hybrid by a battery upgrade with 8 Amp-Hour brand new cells for $2,000. But experts say that hybrid cells need to be balanced properly with professional equipment. Hybrids have been on American roads since 1999, so it’s not surprising that a lot of them are reaching battery-replacement time.
We use good, tested cells from newer battery packs, making sure our re-manufactured high voltage batteries work properly and efficiently.
For the Highlander Hybrid, it costs $4,848.Prices have come down on hybrid batteries over the past 10 years. Along these same lines, because our dealer network here at The Hybrid Shop works with so many Prius vehicles, they are constantly being bombarded with a simple question: How much does it cost to replace a Toyota Prius Hybrid Battery?
The shops got to charge customers or insurance companies $1000 to replace a deployed air bag, claiming it was new and pocketing the difference. Is it possible that some taxi fleet operators are paying criminals to steal hybrid  batteries? Scavengers frequently break into vacant homes and strip all the copper pipes and wiring out of them to sell for scrap, too. Today, I use my trusty Miata for TSD rallies and occasional track days at Lime Rock and Watkins Glen. The affected vehicles are 2003 to 2005 Civic Hybrids (1st gen) and 2005 to 2011 Civic Hybrids (2nd gen). If the car sits for more than a month (especially during hot weather), the battery may get so low that it never fully recovers and eventually fails.
Body repair shops are cautioned to not let the oven temperature get too high when working on a Honda Civic Hybrid.
Most salvage yards will guarantee the battery works or will replace it for up to 30 days if it fails to hold a charge, but beyond that you are on your own.
The warranty date is based on the vehicle build date, not its sale date, which can be found on the build plate on the driver door pillar. Your local Honda dealer should also be able to verify this information using your vehicle’s VIN code.
To read the codes and diagnose the fault, a scan tool capable of reading Honda fault codes must be plugged into your car’s OBD II diagnostic connector (located under the dash near the steering column). Then remove the back seat, remove the small switch cover on the battery pack, and turn the switch OFF (down). For the 2006 to 2009 Honda Civic hybrid, expect to pay approximately $2,000 for a replacement pack. Skipping that step can lead to overcharged cells and a hydrogen fire, which is very dangerous. There is no guarantee the company from eBay will be still on the market next year to back up its warranty.
The cost of hybrid batteries is never going to be low, but it doesn’t have to break the bank, either. In 2008, Toyota lowered the price of the first-generation Prius battery pack to $2,299 and Gen II (2004-2008) to $2,588. Although walking down the road with a battery pack on your shoulder would be a lot less conspicuous than a 50′ flat screen. Used hybrid batteries are risky because when the battery sits around in the junk yard for more than a couple of months in a discharged condition, some of the cells may never fully recover. Wait at least five minutes for the system’s high voltage capacitors to discharge before working on the battery or other IMA high voltage components. Toyota Parts & Service now charges an official $3,649 for a new 1st- or 2nd-generation Prius pack. Or perhaps the fleet owners are paying people to steal the batteries for them so they can get their insurance company to foot the bill for nice new batteries to replace the old worn out ones.
Some buyers opt to install the packs themselves, though you will have to deal with return of the old core and shipping charges. Or maybe some crafty criminals simply located an low-risk, high-value target in the form of these batteries. This upsets the internal charge balance of the battery and prevents the battery from recharging normally, which will eventually cause it to fail. Hybrid technology trained technicians eliminate the hassle of searching for a mechanic that’s willing and able to install your new HV battery. However, installing a used battery may buy you enough time to sell or trade your car for something else before the battery fails again.
Do you think OEMs are ready to increase the complexity of their voltage network system to improve feature level?
How will the legislation deal with this level of voltage which is under the high voltage threshold legislation? They will perform the battery installation around your schedule and even right in your own driveway.
