These voltages are readings that are for standard lead-acid batteries and low maintenance batteries that are inexpensive and common in older vehicles.

Could you please explain how alternators work this days - I understand they do not have attached or built-in voltage regulator any more? My alternator is three wires - main + and two wires of smaller AWG (I guess 16 or 18) - what they are for?
If motor's computer has a fried output for voltage regulation (if the computer controls the alternator), could a possible a solution be use of an old fashion external electronic regulator? I don't know that much about alternators, but specifically, I know the Neon's PCM has the voltage regulator in it.
My uneducated guess is the voltage might be lower than optimal during charging because your battery is getting older and subsequently, not holding as much voltage as it did when new. At least I now have some better understanding that there is no reason for panic Will watch.

With reference to Steve's table of voltage against % charge, I wonder if your battery was fully charged at the start. Using LED lighting, TV, and a PVR, (both on 240v transformers for 3-4 hours) pump for 2 showers and washing up, (in summer) the battery drops to around 70-75% observed before going to sleep, but is usually almost back up to 100% by 9am, we can stay put for as long as the water & waste tanks last.
Spring autumn and winter obviously less long due to greater use of heating, lights, and the cooling effect on the batteries. So you should at least use the higher of your two voltages, which would possibly have risen a bit higher. Have come to the conclusion that the battery is ok so no need to get on to the dealer about it. If the gravity of each cell stays relatively the same (usually all in the green) does that mean that I don’t need to equalize that battery? The reason I ask is: I have 90 watts of harbor freight panels, run thru a sunsaver controller that charges 2 wally world deep cycle batteries and the gravity has almost never been below the green level, and I never really have had to add much water.
My other set up has about 750 watts of poly panels, run through a xantrex 30 amp charge controller charging a trojan 12 volt golf cart battery.


I guess my question is do I need to do this since the wally world batteries always seem to be in good shape as per hydrometer readings? I built an off-grid system for my home and have expanded and maintained it myself over the years, so that is my knowledge base. Also, NEVER combine different types, or age, or widely differing state of charge of your batteries when charging. Saw this as I was looking for a SG to SOC chart and thought I would make a couple of comments.
It can confuse many people, as they believe that a normal car battery would be charged when it is at 12 volts and empty when it is at 0 volts.
These are found on most modern vehicles and are available as replacements for older models. One point to consider is that temperature can have a dramatic effect on voltage with cooler temperature dropping voltage and the figures shown above are applicable to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you have a multi-meter then it is quick and simple to attach the leads to the positive and negative terminals of the battery. These allow you to test the battery under load and give more information about the health of the battery. It was the most common way to test batteries before electronic test equipment became common outside of garages. New alternator did not help, this Canadian version does not have temperature sensor on battery. I had a dead battery one time last winter and after that I put a voltmeter in cigarette lighter.
I believe as before one is activated together with ignition, is the other one for voltage regulation and in what range of voltage it regularly has?
The connector has a DG wire (generator field control) that goes to the PCM the BLK wire is the ground wire. I noticed that voltage looks better when it is colder - was 13.6 to 14 today at temperature near 48F. We are using a 12v 600w Nikkai inverter to run our 230v 60w television, but it won't go for long before the inverter trips out [low battery alert (11.5v I think)] I'm guessing the inverter is drawing about 100w on the 12v (in) side, so assuming the inverter is not faulty it would suggest I need to double up on leisure battery capacity when wild camping. When using the battery voltage as an indicator of state of charge, the battery should have been at rest (niether charging or discharging) for some time time - I would give it two or three hours. Voltages and Specific Gravity are listed for a 6-volt or 12-volt battery, and battery banks of 24 and 48 volts. Some were slightly different from each-other with regards to their SOC values, however I averaged all of them together to come up with a chart which represents what I believe to be a good general indication.
A more accurate method is to measure the specific gravity of each cell within the battery, however for many batteries this is difficult or impossible (AGM batteries, for example).
Occasional dips into the yellow may not be harmful, but continual discharges to those levels will shorten battery life considerably. Just thought it might be helpful to add that one tool I’ve found useful is the little floating balls thing for checking individual cell status in lead acid batteries. I mainly use this system for 12 volt water pumps,a few LED’s and cfl lights and occasionally power tools.
My immediate thought about the differences in your two battery banks is that the wally world batteries are newer, or less heavily used than the Trojan.
I do off grid solar for a living, 25 years now and I sent a customer the link to this chart to give him an extra tool to keep tabs of his system. This is not true and in fact, there is a very small range around 12 volts where the car battery voltage moves from fully charged to fully discharged. There are many factors that will affect the life of your battery, so the only real way to see if the battery is good still is to test it. Your battery should be at or very close to the fully charged voltages that we have listed for common battery types. This is done by putting the battery under stress and then measuring how much the voltage drops during the process. The shop owner who replaced the alternator also confirmed that the old one was good but he said I will have a better voltage with the new one. This would not scare me if I see this before although on my older car I always had 14.4 all year round. Isolate the battery from the circuits and measure the voltage at the battery terminals 30 mins after the end of charging. Measuring and knowing the SOC of a battery or battery bank is useful when applying towards alternative energy, or any other situation where you need to know its condition.
Many (most) alt-energy systems incorporate a DC-shunt which keeps track of SOC by monitoring the current flow in and out of the battery or battery bank, which is a very accurate way to track state-of-charge. To be somewhat accurate, the battery should be in that condition for an hour or two before taking a measurement, while for a more accurate measurement you should wait 6 hours up to 24 hours. Generally speaking, the less you discharge the battery before recharge, the longer the battery will last. The Trojan sounds like it is getting old, and needs more frequent watering and equalizing to keep it functioning.
The one thing I would disagree with somewhat from your well written article is concerning the accuracy of state of charge meters.
If there is a reading below the normal car battery voltage level then the battery or charging system may need to be checked. This test should be done yearly before the cooler winter months that will put the most strain on the battery. The tester looks like a giant eyedropper and you simply suck in enough liquid to raise the measuring float. I suspect that he actually does not know these things well because this did not happen as well as some other things he said before.
Most alternative-energy systems are designed to keep the battery bank at least 50% or higher.
When batteries are in series they do not necessarily charge at the same rate and can become imbalanced. Same with myself - I could fix this things in old fashion cars but now when almost everything is controlled by ECMs I unfortunately do not know how things functioning.
It is set to equalize every 30 days, however sometimes I have to do it more than that, to bring them all back to green.
The plates may have become heavily sulfated enough that the equalize mode can’t get it all off into solution.
The equalizing charge ups the charging voltages in order to get enough voltage to the lesser charged batteries in the series chain.
I combine the batteries whenever we lose power for more than a few hours so we can run TVs, fans DVD player and lights etc. The standard meter for years has been the Tri-Metric meter but I finally gave up on using them because they arent very accurate unless fine-tuned beyond the level most homeowners are capable of understanding. Yes it will over charge the higher charged batteries, which is why the equalizing charge is only applied for a short time, however if the system uses a single battery equalization is not required and can be detrimental. You should probably start saving your shekels for a new battery because that one is not going to live much longer.
It doesnt help that the manual makes little sense to the layman or that the meter cant read battery voltage and often keeps compounding small errors into bigger ones. It would be wise to buy a desulfator unit for your batteries in order to reverse sulfation of the plates after long periods of less than 100% charge. The meters that you can get that take their info from the inverter or in the case of Midnite Solar from the charge controller are more accurate because they temperature compensate but they need fine-tuning as well. Just yesterday a customer called because his inverter shut down at 23 volts, a definite low battery but the SOC meter claimed he was at 81% full.
