Hey Pretty Handy Girl readers, I’m stepping up to the podium today to prove to you that I can do more than just wrap presents around here. There comes a time in every car owner’s life when you get stuck and your car is difficult to start.
You can purchase a new car battery at your local auto parts store or discount stores like Costco.
Ok, seriously she made me write that last part.A  Pop the hood of your car and prop it open. The battery should no longer be connected to the car at this point.A Look closely, does your car battery have a protective cover surrounding it? At this point, you will want to use the wire brush to clean off any corrosion from the battery terminal clamps.
Gently set the new battery into the car.A A  You can spray a little anti-corrosion spray on the battery posts if you like. Re-attach the mounting bracket by hooking the rod back onto the stand and then attach the bolt to the front. Did Brittany ever tell you about the time that I changed the oil on my car when we were dating? The other day when checking the fluids on the car (1997 Mercury Cougar XR7, 4.6L, v8) I noticed some corrosion on the battery terminal. Take the time to inspect the belt for cracks or fraying, idler pulley, and tensioner for bearing noise while you have the belt loose. The brushes are just screwed to the voltage regulator, here is what the new brushes from NAPA look like vs.
Now I did an old school trick that an old car mechanic told me: solder the cable to the terminal.
After you have a good mechanical connection, heat up the terminal to the point where you can melt solder on it without melting the lead terminal itself.
I put some dielectric grease on the base of the terminals and then anti-corrosion felt pieces under under the terminals. In order to be able to post messages on the Hot Rod Forum : Hotrodders Bulletin Board forums, you must first register.

When it comes to hard wiring, just replace the ends with something that will fit your battery. Kedishen wrote:EDIT TO FIRST POSTDidn't notice the blue cable is an extension of the red and black.
Forgot to mention the leads wont be long anyway because my van battery is under the drivers seat, doh! See i think ive done something wrong because it worked when i tested it hooking it up using the crocodile clips, ie when the van was switched off within seconds the red light on the unit went off, started the van back up and on came the light, now the red light just stays on and the unit gets warm aswell ass the fuse, could i off blew something inside the unit??? If you’re going to do any work on your car involving the electrical system, disconnect the battery first. But, when your wife is waving a camera in your face and telling you to stop and hold that pose, it can take considerably longer.
You might need to put the adjustable wrench on one side to secure the nut head while turning with the socket wrench on the opposite side.
One day it’s about home decor, building something, planting something, car repair etc. I got it given with my last caravan and didnt ask what it was, i think i can remember someone mentioning they used it to charge a battery?
This is better than a SCR as with those, they basically equalise the batterys- which sucks if you have a higher capacity leisure battery than vehicle battery since it will never fully charge. And, to put cherry on cake, it works whilst engine isn't running.
My van battery has round terminals and my battery cables aren't like that, so a visit to halfords and I got a nice little adapter for spade connections. If thats the case, then ignore playing with alternator and just connect between the two batts. If you disconnect the positive side of the battery first, the negative side is still connected to the entire car. Connect the positive terminal first, and the negative second – the reverse of removal, and for the same reasons. Brittany’s car battery had been showing signs of weakness, but it was hanging in there. Cool showing off my mad shade tree mechanic skills I started up the car and asked her to look for any leaks.
I kinda want one now.How much of that applys to your model I dunno cus it looks slightly different to the one mentioned at the link below. Everything else is sorted for you.If you wantto chose when its charging, its safer to splice into the negative wire with an inline fuse and switch (WITH LED LIGHT!!!!). If you drop a tool and it lands on the positive battery terminal and touches anything else on the car, you’ll have an electrical short.

When you slip the negative connector on, there will be a spark as it gets close and makes contact with the negative battery terminal. Remove the terminal caps as described above and clean each contact post with a wire brush to get a nice clean metal contact surface. When she took it to the dealer for a recall issue, the mechanic wanted to charge her $$$ to change the battery. Only prob then is you have to disconnect battery to remove the charger.Once you got it all wired up,to check its doing its job, the red light will prolly be on AND using a voltage meter, the voltage of the battery being charged should be much higher than normal whereas the other battery will prolly started to look abit discharged. By disconnecting the negative first, you’re cutting off the return path for the current. Being the frugal Handy Guy around here, I told them to forget it because she could do it herself.A  Somehow she convinced me to do it (must have been my extensive auto parts store work experience from high school).
It'll prolly be fused inside anyway, but wouldn't it be nice if you could save the unit if something did go wrong.ORIf you only wanted this to work when the engine is on, you could splice a relay into the negative and then take the sensing wire from the relay to the middle terminal of alternator.
Then it will operate like a voltage sensing relay but a bit more clever like.-----------------Its best to keep the wiring as short as possible. Left side of module to engine batt, right side to leisure batt (trial and error i suppose). It would be idealto mount it in engine bay beside the engine battery, BUT its hot and cold and dirty in there. However, the blue wire I would think would be the voltage sensing wire, so I would have connected it to the middle terminal on the alternator as this shows what the battery is doing anyway so it should still work whilst engine is not running. Theres no reason you couldn't mount it in the glove compartment up underneath the dash there, then take wires out through the grummet thingy into engine bay. Why the blue wire can't connect directly to the battery I am not sure - it would probably achieve the same thing - but for some reason i don't like it the sound of that).Thats how i'd prolly wire it up. Good ventilation in there, and keeps it safe.Remember, always connect live first, disconnect live last.
Fingers crossed mind you, my advice ain't worth blowing your self up for As a side note: if you have a solar panel already fitted, i'd reverse it so leisure batt charges engine batt and put blue wire to a switch so that it now operates similar to a battery master. Then you cankeepthe engine batt topped up when you are parked for many weeks at a time in Portugal or wherever. Im liking the idea of just hard wiring it into my van properly, i think your idea of having a switch on then i know i can defo switch it off incase ot draws power all the time, i would assume that when the leisure battery is charged it will switch off to protect and save my van battery, mmm im lost now, also i wanted to fit the unit under my bench seat in the back which is just behind the drivers seat would this be ok do?
