Forgot to mention the leads wont be long anyway because my van battery is under the drivers seat, doh! See i think ive done something wrong because it worked when i tested it hooking it up using the crocodile clips, ie when the van was switched off within seconds the red light on the unit went off, started the van back up and on came the light, now the red light just stays on and the unit gets warm aswell ass the fuse, could i off blew something inside the unit??? My van battery has round terminals and my battery cables aren't like that, so a visit to halfords and I got a nice little adapter for spade connections. If thats the case, then ignore playing with alternator and just connect between the two batts. If you disconnect the positive side of the battery first, the negative side is still connected to the entire car. It'll prolly be fused inside anyway, but wouldn't it be nice if you could save the unit if something did go wrong.ORIf you only wanted this to work when the engine is on, you could splice a relay into the negative and then take the sensing wire from the relay to the middle terminal of alternator.
Then it will operate like a voltage sensing relay but a bit more clever like.-----------------Its best to keep the wiring as short as possible. Left side of module to engine batt, right side to leisure batt (trial and error i suppose). It would be idealto mount it in engine bay beside the engine battery, BUT its hot and cold and dirty in there. However, the blue wire I would think would be the voltage sensing wire, so I would have connected it to the middle terminal on the alternator as this shows what the battery is doing anyway so it should still work whilst engine is not running. Theres no reason you couldn't mount it in the glove compartment up underneath the dash there, then take wires out through the grummet thingy into engine bay. Why the blue wire can't connect directly to the battery I am not sure - it would probably achieve the same thing - but for some reason i don't like it the sound of that).Thats how i'd prolly wire it up. Good ventilation in there, and keeps it safe.Remember, always connect live first, disconnect live last.
Fingers crossed mind you, my advice ain't worth blowing your self up for As a side note: if you have a solar panel already fitted, i'd reverse it so leisure batt charges engine batt and put blue wire to a switch so that it now operates similar to a battery master. Then you cankeepthe engine batt topped up when you are parked for many weeks at a time in Portugal or wherever. Im liking the idea of just hard wiring it into my van properly, i think your idea of having a switch on then i know i can defo switch it off incase ot draws power all the time, i would assume that when the leisure battery is charged it will switch off to protect and save my van battery, mmm im lost now, also i wanted to fit the unit under my bench seat in the back which is just behind the drivers seat would this be ok do?
