Apple fans have anxiously been awaiting the current revision of the small MacBook Pro, having to make due with the antiquated Core 2 Duo series processors until now. Compared to 2010 MBP 13 2.4 GHzDPC Latency CheckerWith the DPC Latency Checker we saw a very similar picture to that of the MBP 17.
This article has a lot of images showing Windows 10 Build 10049's installation process and features. And for that very reason I was excited when -- after freeing up sufficient drive space -- Windows 10 Build 10049 proceeded to install successfully last night. I knew things were going well when I hit 30 percent relatively quickly (within ~20 minutes or so). Interestingly despite being a seemingly small build (the only major change is the addition of the Project Spartan browser), the Build 10049 install was relatively long even when working properly.
Build 10041 also introduced text links in the right hand list of apps and locations and introduced groups that you can name and put Live Tiles in. Build 10049 doesn't bring any major revisions versus Build 10041, but it is now properly capturing theme colors (in my case denim blue -- for me Build 10041 was defaulting to black). The running apps are laid out more efficiently in the space and minimized apps are no longer shown. Cortana is pretty much identical in Build 10049, although it does appear to be grabbing more Settings options in the search results (which get their own dedicated pane). The taskbar icons get a little sharper in Build 10041 and change to more of a grayish tone.
If you click it, it will continue to activate, even if you click to WiFi and pick a network. If you do accidentally trigger it, you can clear its status by logging completely out and back in to the machine or doing a reboot (locking won't clear it). Windows 10's notifications appear roughly the same in Builds 9926 and 10041, although the list of apps that Notifications come from appears to be growing. In Build 10049 it appears that notifications are temporarily broken, although there is some sort of security message, so perhaps there's an additional setting I need to trigger. Uh oh, Build 10049 restored my GeForce 349.90 WQHL experimental DirectX 12 driver from NVIDIA. A search in the beta Windows Store for Windows 10 shows no matching app, though several third party apps appear to be cribbing Microsoft's icon for it.
But in terms of UI direction in Builds 10041 and 10049 I have to say Microsoft is heading in the right direction.
I also like the UI evolution with the new Modern Glass look and the overall flattening and makeovers of various UI elements.
Technically if a driver is WHQL, then the ball is indeed in Microsofts' court either way.People can blame nVidia all they want for this but it doesn't appear to be an apples-to-apples recurrence of Vista's driver model and how bad nVidia (and others) f'd that up.
So you want to play classic Windows and DOS games on your Mac, but you’re unsure where to begin.
Fortunately, there are quite a few options open to you if you’re craving classics like Thief, Age of Empires 2 and Unreal Tournament but have made the switch to Apple hardware.
There’s a good chance you’ve moved on from optical media, particularly if you’re using a MacBook. If your games are old enough, you’ll have an easy time getting them to work by way of emulation.
We’ve covered DOSBox and how it works before, and though our instructions were written with Windows 7 in mind they work just as well on your Mac (or Linux) system when you use the right paths to your files. If you want to play a much-loved classic like Doom or Quake, then you might be lucky enough to find a source port.
Old DOS games and modern source ports will usually require you to provide a copy of the original files or game assets to play, though many old titles are now classed as abandonware. For this reason, older versions of Windows (like Windows 98) can run better than modern versions like Windows 7 or 8.
VirtualBox is completely free and open source virtualization software from Oracle, available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris. For that reason VirtualBox is probably best for Windows XP-era games, and those that maintain good compatibility with the Windows 2000-era platform.
Fusion is a commercial product from VMWare, and one of the best in terms of 3D performance.
Wine, which was initially shorthand for Windows Emulator but now stands for “Wine Is Not an Emulator” is a compatibility layer which allows software written for Windows to run on modern UNIX systems like Linux and Mac OS X.

Stability has always been an issue with Wine, whether it’s glitchy graphics, unpredictable behavior, or frequent crashing. We’ve featured Winery in the past, and Wine Bottler does a similar job — both simplify the process by attempting to optimize Wine for the software you’re trying to run using “skins” or “wrappers” to make things run smoother. Best for: New titles, post-Windows 7 games, and demanding games that require plenty of power to run. You simply can’t beat running games natively, on an operating system they were designed for, that has full access to your processor, graphics card, and all the RAM you can provide.
The main drawback here is that you’ll need to reboot your machine from OS X into Windows to play games, as well as sacrificing the hard drive space that Windows requires to function properly (and room for games). You’ll need a valid copy of Windows 10 (or 8, if you don’t like 10), and of course the game you’re trying to run. As OS X has grown in popularity, Mac versions of games are becoming much more common. This is thanks in part to Valve’s efforts to bring gaming to Linux through SteamOS, which shares its UNIX roots with Apple’s operating system. GOG is another online retailer that specializes in classics, hence Good Old Games. Unfortunately, they’re not in the business of porting old Windows titles so most Mac games available either have Mac ports already available, or they’re DOS games that ship with a copy of DOSBox ready to go. Lastly it’s always worth checking out whether any old Windows games received ports to the Mac. The Mac App Store will often have copies of old Windows games, and the most prolific Mac publisher has to by Aspyr, who have a catalogue of 70+ Mac ports. The choice you make here will surely depend on the game in question, the age of your Mac and its hardware, and the operating system which it was initially designed for. Running an app natively is always best — whether that’s a source port, Mac version, emulation via DOSBox, or running your title using Windows via Boot Camp or a virtual machine. Virtualization is great for those older games that aren’t too demanding, but it might serve you well if you’ve got a recent Mac with an i7 and more RAM than you know what to do with. Choose Wine if the game in question is well-supported, or you’re having trouble going down the virtual machine route. Which old Windows or DOS games will you be playing on your Mac? Let’s get all nostalgic in the comments, below. This article may contain affiliate links, which pays us a small compensation if you do decide to make a purchase based on our recommendation. After using an operating system for a while, you begin to automate many of your most repetitive actions without realising it. Microsoft's antiquated and since-retired operating system MS-DOS (short for Microsoft Disk Operating System) was home to some fantastic games. When it comes to DOS emulation, the general consensus around these parts is that DOSBox is the way to go. Most websites that offer formerly paid software for free do so with little to no illusion of legality.
Install Windows software on your Mac – without the need for a virtual machine, an emulator or dual-booting. Technology correspondent Fred Fishkin talks about the latest trends, the people behind the products and some of the off-beat things you can find online. The smallest MacBook Pro with a 2.3 GHz Core i5 is the least expensive of Apple's MacBook Pro series. Apple sells an external optical USB SuperDrive for around $80 which will allow you to use your original media to play games.
Running an app natively on your Mac that’s optimized for your hardware running the game you want to play within it is one of the most stable ways of reliving old games. The one piece of software that has transformed DOS gaming over the last decade or so is DOSBox. Another option for OS X gamers is Boxer, which uses a graphical user interface to mount, play, and display correct box art for your games. When developers release the source code to the engines that power their games, anyone can take that code, modify it, and port it to new platforms — hence the term source port.
There have been big leaps forward in terms of virtualized 3D graphics performance over the past few years, but you may still encounter compatibility problems like glitches, poor performance and some games refusing to run. It’s also quite draining in terms of processing power and available memory to run two operating systems at once, as you’ll need to provide the VM with a portion of your available power. MacBook users may also struggle with space allotment, as you’ll need to give your VM some hard drive space to function like a real computer.
It’s a free, open source project and as such compatibility with software can vary from good to patchy. This means the software places no additional strain on your hardware like VirtualBox or VMWare Fusion will.
You might not be able to get sound working, or network access may be broken, but you can at least consult the WineHQ app database before you try. Boot Camp is Apple’s answer to running Windows on your Mac, and it’s how you’ll get away with playing the latest PC releases on your Apple hardware. If you intend to use Windows on a laptop, you might find that battery life is about half what it is on OS X.

Get started by running Boot Camp Assistant in Applications > Utilities and read our full guide about running Windows 10 on your Mac for detailed instructions.
You can either browse the catalogue online (look for the SteamPlay icon) or just download the client and see what Steam recommends for you. Provided you can get everything working — sound, 3D acceleration, network access if required — you’ll have a stable experience and you won’t have to reboot your system. For modern games, you’ll want to use Boot Camp to install Windows alongside OS X to take full advantage of your device’s hardware. Our judgement is in no way biased, and our recommendations are always based on the merits of the items. Wish you could go back to 1993 and relive the classics, with a few extra mod cons? Source ports let you do just that. In the Apple Store, its priced starting at 1150 Euro, but other retailers are offering it starting at under 1100 Euro.CaseNot a single complaint do we have about the case in the MacBook Pro 13 at hand. If Jason or anyone else is having usage blocking issues, they should downgrade to WDDM 1.3 drivers. For quickness you might want to just use disk images though, which contain all the data found on a CD or DVD, as a file stored on your computer.
Check out our big list of first person shooter source ports, which lists the top Mac versions alongside Windows and Linux counterparts. You’re essentially emulating the hardware and running Windows on top of it. Using specially designed software you can scale your “virtual machines” based on your requirements.
You can also try enabling Microsoft’s own compatibility modes to run Windows 98 and 95-era games by right-clicking the executable file, and choosing Properties. You don’t have to run two operating systems at once, nor do you have to share processing power or memory with two systems.
Apple even provides all of the drivers you need to get things working — wireless, media keys, touchpads, the lot. Otherwise, Boot Camp provides a great way to use the full potential of your Apple hardware on the latest and greatest titles. Yes, they shrunk the install size down, but what really happened is hardware "caught up" and the industry learned (harshly in Dell's case) what not to attempt to sell customers as a bottom-barrel PC.
Unfortunately, as software isn’t running in its native environment, you may encounter issues along the way depending on what you’re trying to run. In addition to the details found here, it's worth noting that memory cards can't fully be pushed into the card reader, rather they stick out about 1 cm.
By the time Windows 7 came out, the Pentium 4 was dead, Core 2 Duo's were mainstream and the Core i (Nehalem) had been on the market nearly a year.
4GB RAM had become common, and the Intel X25 ushered in reliable and somewhat affordable SSD options.Basically the same thing is happening not to Windows 10. We have all this new hardware on the horizon and Windows 10 is getting flak for not playing ball with it. It's the manufactures job to make their hardware and drivers compatible with the OS, not vice versa. Microsoft can optimize the kernel and driver model for hardware configurations but at the end of the day, they don't write the drivers. But they do sign off on them. 2011 Mit dem kostenlosen Dienstprogramm Boot Camp installieren Sie Windows 7 in wenigen Schritten auf Ihrem Mac.
