The last few years we have had maybe a million (or what seems like a million) bluetooth speakers came out.
If you’ve seen the original UE Boom wireless speaker, you will recognize the UE Megaboom.
The UE Megaboom comes in the same cylindrical packaging as the UE Boom.It has a nice picture on the outside of the package, and the Megaboom is tucked nicely inside a chest-like encasing.
Let’s not forget that because of the cylindrical shape, you get sound coming out all around. The UE Megaboom didn’t only improve on the outside, it has improved in function as well.
The Smart Bluetooth allows you to be far from the speaker, not only for listening to music, but to turn it on from your phone.
Even though it’s quite an investment, you will be satisfied with the overall sound and performance.
Adam got a chance to check out the James Reka special edition UE Boom 2, but great art aside is it better than the original? In the box you’ll get the speaker, a bright neon yellow wall charger and micro USB cable, the instructions and warranty information, and that’s about it. We’re looking at the “Lost Time” special edition speaker by James Reka, but whichever one you get will have the same build and design just with different color fabric.
The rubberized plastic gives it a great grip and the fabric covering makes this one IPX7 waterproof, giving it a one-up on the original which only had an IPX4 certification.
The cylindrical design puts it at about the size of a can of tennis balls, except way thinner. The best part of the Boom 2 when it comes to its connection are the extra features that you get when using the app. Like the original Boom, UE claims a battery life of 15 hours but also like the original it fails to live up to that expectation. You can change the sound with the EQ settings in the app and I was able to customize a setting that made the speaker sound way better in my opinion, but we did all of our testing on the “standard” EQ setting that it comes with out the box. The sound of the UE Boom 2 is slightly better sounding than the original and the waterproofing is always a good selling point, but that’s about it. Ultimate Ears has launched the UE Boom wireless speaker it is branding as the world’s first social music player. Bluetooth connectivity gives a wireless connection between the speaker in your phone and allows the streaming of music from up to 50 feet away. Logitech and Ultimate Ears announced a new waterproof Bluetooth speaker with 20 hour battery life at CES 2015.
Like the smaller UE speakers, there are several interesting features in this new speaker, that users will find handy. There is a stain resistant acoustic skin around the exterior of this speaker that feels nice and is easy to grip.
The UE MEGABOOM sounds impressive both in the noisy environment of a ball room and in a quieter meeting room. You can choose from a customizable EQ and even set the speaker to wake you up with your playlists, Spotify music and Pandora. Check out the rest of our CES 2015 coverage for exciting notebooks gadgets and accessories. There seems to be stereo separation, which is pretty cool coming from a single speaker (and not officially advertised by UE). But on some tracks you will have to stay under 90% volume to avoid distortion or flattening sound. Depending on how loud you blast the music, the Megaboom can last you days or even a week without needing a charge.
I don’t think it looks very fancy for the price, but it does give a hell of a performance for it.
The fact that you can play it nearly everywhere (even near water), control it from a distance, and it lasts for a long time it’s a definite win.
Anyone who is even vaguely familiar with the original UE Boom will find this one very familiar.

It’s not big and you shouldn’t have a problem tossing it in a bag for transport, but it just seems a little too tall. UE claims a range of 100 feet but when we really put this to the test we couldn’t get passed around 60 feet without the signal being dropped completely, and that was in a wide open space with nothing in the way. The app shows you a smaller cartoon version of your exact speaker and lets you raise or lower the volume by clicking on the + and – signs on the cartoon version.
In our testing we got closer to 12 hours which is still decent, but still pretty far off from the claim. Bass kicks in “Feel No Ways” by Drake are lacking a lot of their depth and feel more like they’d prefer to be a part of the mids. Vocals in “Got It Bad” by Leisure weren’t overly clear, but they were given a clear precedence over the rest of what was going on in the song which is good. The hi-hats and crashes in the drums of “Seed 2.0” by The Roots lost a good amount of detail overall and were a little too loud for my taste. The Boom 2 makes a few upgrades and keeps everything basically the same, which is to be expected.
The UE Boom is a cylindrical wireless speaker offering 360 degree sound with a 15 hour battery life.“The digital age has changed how we listen to our favourite songs and interact with music,” said Rory Dooley, General Manager at Ultimate Ears. Earphones aren't all the company makes with a few Bluetooth speakers carrying the Ultimate Ears name as well. Ultimate Ears promises that the speaker will produce clear highs and deep bass to give you quality sound wherever and whenever you want it. The Mini Boom charges via a micro USB cable so many smartphone users will be able to charge the device from the same cable that charges your smartphone on the go. The speaker has a metal frame with a rubberized casing allowing it to survive bumps and drops that come with life on the road. This new UE MEGABOOM is a massive speaker that is still portable at about the size of a tall coffee thermos, and it could pump out a lot of volume in the busy and noisy CES event where we went ears and hands on with the device. First off, the UE MEGABOOM delivers 360-degree sound, so you aren’t just entertaining half of the room. This speaker is waterproof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, even with the nice speaker grill feel.
Earlier this year tat CES 2015, Ultimate Ears officially announced the UE Megaboom wireless speaker. The waterproof (IPX7) speaker has a rugged build, with the its thick clothe grille, covered 3.5mm jacks and charging ports for better protection against water and shock. If you blast the music upward 70% volume for the most part you do get 8 – 12 hours of playback time.
Most consumers wouldn’t be able to buy 2 speakers to pair, so most would have to be satisfied with the sound of one.
In the same way, we were a little reluctant to review the Boom 2 when it came out, but refigured it’s only fair to give it a shot to see if Logitech was able to improve upon the things we didn’t like about the original. It also gives the speaker a more durable feel and even though it doesn’t look it, it survived a few drops with not even a scratch. I would’ve definitely enjoyed it more if it was maybe an inch shorter than it is, but that could just be my personal preference.
Still, that’s very impressive and besides that the speaker was never more than 30 feet away from me resulting in no dropped audio.
You can even power the speaker on and off in the app which is actually really useful in practice. We would’ve liked for them to up the battery life since something like the JBL Flip 3 gets almost 10 hours and isn’t as big. It felt like the bass was always right behind the vocals, which took away from the other instruments in the background. It’s doubtful to see a company like Logitech do a complete redesign of something that got such positive reviews at the original Boom. The internal battery for the Mini Boom promises up to 10 hours of playback from a single battery charge.
Ultimate Ears also has an app available for Android and iOS devices that allows you to pair two UE Mini Boom speakers together for twice the sound production. The speaker can also act as a speakerphone and features a multifunction button that answers and disconnects phone calls.

If you quickly recover it from a drop in the pool or plan to use it in the shower it will survive just fine.
The included charger can recharge the speaker in two and a half hours and you can see how much battery life is left by pressing the power and volume buttons.
While I never fully reviewed Ultimate Ears AKA UE Boom, I spent a good amount of time with one and I recommended it for a few holidays last year. The rubber strip going down one side has the volume up and down buttons (super big buttons). A fabric covering surrounds the speaker save for the plastic that makes up the top, bottom, and front of the speaker.
Up top you’ll find the power button and another smaller button above that which is the Bluetooth pairing button.
Even though it fits nicely in the hand, its height just makes it a little awkward in my opinion. You can also tell how much battery life is left in the speaker, pair a second UE speaker for double the sound, set alarms, and customize the sound with EQ settings all in the app. But I guess that’s just me being critical since 12 hours is still going to get you through a solid day at the beach. At almost $100 less you can get something like the JBL Flip 3, which I think has a way better value overall.
UE Boom solves that problem.”“Ultimate Ears strives to amplify the social experience of listening to music, bringing people together around the music they love. The top part of the cylindrical speaker has the power button, and bluetooth pairing button. Sometimes UE does collaborations with other companies for artwork, but nothing yet for the Megaboom. On the front is also where you’ll find the signature UE Boom + and – buttons that control volume. The bottom of the speaker has two flaps that are flush with the speaker, but open up to reveal the micro USB input for charging and the 3.5mm input. If you need to check how much battery life is left you can just hold the + and – buttons down at the same time and it’ll tell you. It just seems like Logitech exaggerated a few of the specs which isn’t really necessary since the real specs are still fairly impressive.
Still, if you want full waterproofing instead of just splash proofing then the UE Boom 2 is the way to go.
UE Boom is designed to bring music out into the world.”UE Boom FeaturesUltimate Ears is apparently designed as the world’s first social music player, packaged in a small cylinder capable of providing 360-degree sound. You can find her playing with her many gadgets, pets or enjoying the many sites New York City has to offer. There’s also a small metal hook on the bottom so you can attach a string or carabiner clip to. 11 or 12 hours of battery life is still good enough for most people and a range of 60 feet is double what most of their competitors claim.
It’s a lot bigger than other cylindrical speakers out there, so I expect bigger sound.
It looks flimsy at first glance but it is actually fairly strong and should be fine for average usage. You can use it to pair two speakers, control the EQ (works with stored music, not with streaming apps). The bass response is predictably less punchy and wonderful than with the much-larger $300 Megaboom, but the Roll costs just $99 (and you can’t move that kind of air with such a small package).
The flip side of each speaker is a different color, with that bungee providing a contrasting color. The speaker is IPX7 rated, which means you can take in in the shower or splash it at the pool, and UE says the Roll offers 65-foot wireless range and nine-hour battery life (seems about right to us, although our tests were less than rigorous, it being almost summertime and all). The only bummer?
