What's troubling is the 4S fell considerably short of its 200 hour standby rating, even despite this test being very close to 'best case'.
This should help to explain or at least clarify some of the 'minor' standby time questions folks may have before or after their next iPhone purchase. It's probably a safe bet that Apple's engineers will successfully squash the bugs that are causing those major battery drain issues with iOS 5. Since I have downloaded and installed iOS5 on my iPhone 4 the battery life has been reduced significantly. Allyn, you said you picked up the "A" phone in 2008 because it was the only one that just worked. Should add that you did a great job trying to clear things up and no doubt offered "A" people a rare competent assessment of the problem, which of course it isn't, because it just works. This kind of battery life in a 4G LTE phone is quite simply astounding and gives the DROID RAZR MAXX a huge advantage over the rest of the current crop of devices out there that can often struggle to make it through a regular work day.

I can usually get two or more days out of my GSII with my version of normal usage, which is about two thirty minute calls a little bit of internet and wifi usage and at least three hundred to four hundred texts total. Personally I love that extra 15% because it doesn’t make weird lumps or corners on the phone and cases still fit on it, but I got that little boost.
And OF COURSE they made this phone without a removable battery AND THEN they made a phone RIGHT AFTER with a longer battery life. I love this phone, why couldn’t they have just made the original with the bigger battery?

The average 4G LTE phone is lucky to make it more than 14 hours on a charge if you use your phone at all – even left virtually untouched you are unlikely to be greeted by anything but a blank screen in the morning if you commit the cardinal sin of forgetting to plug your phone in at night.
For more casual users, and thus users that are less likely to remember to plug their phone in, I can see 36-48 hours of battery life as a real possibility. I basically fall into the same camp as Anthony did in his review of the RAZR and that is that the average user is going to be pleased with the screen. The HD displays in the HTC Rezound, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and even the LG Spectrum are undeniably superior in my mind so if you are going to be watching a lot of video or are simply a pixel peeper you should probably look to one of those devices. The advertising showing the RAZR slicing through everything in sight failed to mention that your hands would be it’s main target.
It’s going to seem like a really simple and probably minor thing to many of you, but I simply could not get over it during the entire time I had the phone. When lighting conditions are optimal the 8 MP rear-facing camera is capable of some nice images and as always I have far fewer complaints about the quality of the video capture. Apple did some great work optimizing the A4 CPU when developing the iPhone 4, and I suspect this optimization got folks used to their phone losing a negligible bit of battery during periods of extended standby. Most importantly, my reason for doing this test was to determine if I could hold out for Apple to make further bug fixes and optimizations, and that my own 4S was not physically defective and in need of return.

Sure I like their hardware, but I always place analytics ahead of emotions on this sort of thing. Would a phone that could turn all of that on its ear be something you might be interested in? NVIDIA specifically and even Qualcomm may do a better job at pushing their mobile processors branding, but I haven’t really had any complaints with my TI powered handsets.
The screen reproduces colors well, is sufficiently bright and text appears sharp when viewed at a normal distance. I will say that I think Motorola may have a tendency to push their default settings toward accuracy rather than vibrancy and I think most users would prefer the latter. Other than that, I cannot imagine moving back to any manufacturer overlays at this time even if better battery life was promised.

Feeling the urge to return my own 4S (for a refund - so I could go back to my more battery miserly 4), I decided to run an experiment this past weekend. This leaves the 4S, which appears to be falling prey to that baggage of the additional CPU, as well as any additional power draw introduced by the shift to the A5 core. The phones were loaded with an extremely minimalist set of apps, content, and settings - much less than even the 'simplest' user would endure with such a feature-packed device. This causes time lags in the distribution of new OS revisions, as well as other things like how Skype only recently added video support under Android - much longer than it took them under iOS. Switching to 3G only gets me maybe 2 hours more, so I never use 4G unless I want to charge three times a day. With the extended battery, I can use the tethering for hours while still using the device for normal routines. A tweak to my email settings and turning off some unnecessary location services had me sorted out - well, almost. Dozens (if not hundreds) of posts were from users who had brought their 4S *back* to the Apple store or other vendor, getting a replacement. I needed to compare the phones on as level of a playing field as possible as to get some real answers. Remember, the A5 is lifted from the iPad 2 which is powered by a battery of nearly 5x the capacity (25 Whr vs. The 4S running with my own personal configuration (minimal notifications, manual fetch email, Siri 'Raise to Speak' disabled, no 'major' drain issues) drops at ~2% per hour.
In nearly all of these cases, it did not solve the issue - even when starting 'fresh' and without restoring all of their old settings from the previous phone, something that was installed or configured would trigger the issue once again. Apple did what they could to make the A5 sip juice for the 4S, but you can only gain so much by underclocking a pair of CPUs, inevitably forcing Apple to de-rate the 4S to 200 hours of standby time. 2% per hour translates to a phone that goes from fully charged to completely dead in only 2 days time with zero actual use!
