And the car would likely maintain a speed at which traction was possible, unlike most humans. We can engineer very smart autonomous vehicles, we haven’t figured out a way to engineer smart drivers. The battery is nearly half the cost of most current EV’s so this car could come in under 30,000 dollars. A 200 mile range $25k EV and a shorter range (150 mile?) plain Jane EV for less than $20k should pretty much kill off petroleum. People would likely be willing to pay a bit more for EVs if fuel savings more than covered the additional loan payment. Add in automated driving to shrink the car market anywhere between 15-50% and we could be making some very serious head way.
Put that out 5 more years and by 2025 we could be pushing well over 25-30% of the market being EVs. I’ve played with models for the anticipated (well, certainly by me!) changeover from smokers to EVs, based on other disruptive technologies that have succeeded in my lifetime, and I believe EVs will likely take longer than 2025 to reach a quarter of the market.
The problem is that the average life of an ICE vehicle is almost 15 years, and the tipping point where mainstream thought begins to see the new technology as inevitable and begins buying without hesitation seems to be around twice the average product lifespan. If we take 2010, around the Tesla announcement (given its excellent market reception), as the start of the shift, that would mean EVs might exceed half the market by around 2040, putting a quarter of the market near 2030, since these trends seem to typically accelerate over time.
People who want to do something, personally, to help fight climate change might pay a bit extra for an EV.
Finally, there’s a chance that the 15 year average is pushed out by a number of cars that linger for many years while being driven little. And all that said – I can see EVs being only 25% of new cars sales by 2025 simply because of supply limitations. It would take a lot of concerted effort to have the battery plant capacity for more than 22.5 million new cars by 2025. Regarding batteries, remember, in order to build the first gigafactory Tesla prepped an additional 3 ( or was it 4) sites. I would add that subsequent approvals will likely go more smoothly as other states see exactly what it is they missed out on. The Encore base MSRP is $25k, and the Trax is just over $20k, so there is plenty of budget for the rest of the car.
For the naysayers, remember the original Volt was near that price at launch, when optioned nicely, and the Spark EV is in the 30’s with 3x less battery. The Infiniti Q50 is one of the highest-rated luxury cars (in its conventional form), but the hybrid version received low marks for its performance and road handling. The Q50 hybrid’s braking and acceleration are uneven, and the adaptive steering system gives a delayed response. The 2015 Q50 is a luxury sedan that seats five and is offered in Hybrid, Q50s, Premium and base configuration – we’ll only be discussing the Hybrid model here.

Also available as standard equipment are emergency assistance, parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system. Several other car manufacturers are offering plug-in hybrid vehicles that offer even greater eco-friendly benefits than the popular Prius hybrid model. The base model is simply known as the Prius Plug-in, and the slightly more upscale version is the Advanced.

However, the 691hp, twin engine Tesla Model S is one of few cars to actually have a strong physiological effect on the human body. The Sync audio system includes a feature that auto-dials 911 when it is linked with a cell phone, and there’s even a parental control feature for those with teen drivers.
Employees at the facility will be able to book rides from the autonomous Volts through a carsharing app designed by the company. Braking is also inconsistent, and ride quality is harsher than that of the standard edition Q50. Toyota is fighting back with the Prius plug-in hybrid, which is largely unchanged from last year. However, its range under electric power isn’t long (just fifteen miles), and its top speed is just 62 miles per hour.

A hybrid car solves this issue by using electric power at speeds 25 mph and below, and by not idling at all. Along with economy models, hybrids and pickup trucks are now being sold, and some automakers are building high-performance vehicles for road and track use. More repair shops have the tools and skills to repair them, and replacement parts are more available. If you buy a hybrid, prepare to pay more upfront – but you’ll recoup your investment in the form of lower fuel costs and a diminished carbon footprint. These new batteries offer better performance and a longer range, and are the choice of most vehicle makers.
However, they cost a bit more, and the apparatus that controls the motor’s speed and inverts the power is more complex. Its ride is amply comfortable, and handling is better than expected, but steering is a bit stiff at times. These cars come with auto transmissions as standard equipment, and the Fusion gets 44mpg in the city and 41 on the highway.
While far from agile, the Prius V is relaxed in the corners and it has good brakes and a comfortable ride. Transition between electric and gas power is smooth, and the Volt has a 38-mile electric-only range – which is stellar for a plug-in hybrid. While some have a slight edge over others, we wholeheartedly recommend any of the vehicles on this list.
