The circuit given here is a current limited lead acid battery charger built around the famous variable voltage regulator IC LM 317. To setup the charging voltage, power ON  the charger and hook up a voltmeter across the output terminals and adjust R4 to make the voltmeter read 28V.

This charger can be used for single 24 volt 7 AH battery or 2nos 12 volts 7AH batteries in series.

Hi Gangadhar you can but ensure the output voltage is adjusted to 14.2 volts without load with pot R4. Unlike many units, this battery charger continuously charges at maximum current, tapering off only near full battery voltage.

Hi RAM you require a regulated 14volt DC supply with the current limiting fixed at 5Amps max. How do we modify this circuit to charge one or multiple units of SMF 5-volt motorcycle batteries. I build that one but i think the power of the battery go back to capacitor and i plan to put some diod in possitive side. If you want to limit to any other current level you have to use a sensing resistance and a transistor similar to the one used in our earlier article, which can be adopted for 12 volt also.

How can i check if the device is working, it has a voltage output of 12v but im not sure if it is charging my battery. You may check up the charger lable and adjust the output voltage to that value and set the current limit to 300 to 400mA. Is it because of the transistor is experiencing cut off then the battery will no longer be charged? By altering the connections of SEL0 and SEL1 pins, upto 4 batteries in series can be charged using this circuit.
R1 effectively sets the current through Q1 - the voltage across this resistor plus Q1's emitter-base voltage is equal to the voltage across D1-D3.
Diode bridge DB and electrolytic capacitor E1 are used to rectify the AC voltage to DC voltage.This rectified DC power supply is fed into the input of the second circuit where LM350 and operational amplifier LM301A are used to control the charging current and voltage of the lead acid battery. For Q1 to conduct and stop the current from raising further the Vbe of voltage requirement for Q1 is 0.65 volts.
Once the charge is full, transistor Q1 will turn ON and LED L1 will be ON to indicate that the charging has been completed. Diode D1 prevents the reverse flow of current from the battery when charger is switched OFF or when mains power is not available.
IC ensures that Q1 (and thus the constant current source) is turned on.When the battery has fully charged, the current through IC drops to a very low value and so Q1 turns off (since there is no longer any base-emitter current). It allows enough current to flow through the regulator so that Q1 is fully on for battery voltages up to about 13.5V. The circuit also features temperature based charge qualification.An NTC thermistor connected at the NTC pin (pin11) of the IC serves as the temperature sensor.
Decreasing the value of R2 effectively increases the final battery voltage by raising the current cutoff point.
If they are mounted on the same heatsink and will throttle the circuit back if Q1 gets too hot.
